WEBINAR: Aspirations, trust, and poverty reductionIFPRI-PIM
What are aspirations, why do they matter, and how are they formed? How can they be affected by development interventions, or by negative shocks—which the poor frequently face? And how are aspirations and trust in government linked? What can policymakers do to blunt the negative psychological effects of poverty and shocks, and to more broadly bolster aspirations and trust? In this PIM webinar on December 19, 2018 Dr. Katrina Kosec (IFPRI) shared recent novel findings with examples from case studies in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Pakistan.

With water resource variability rapidly growing and demands on water resources increasing, using digital tools and innovative, inclusive institutional approaches to address both challenges is becoming ever-more urgent.
A recent workshop under the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (Research Area on Variability, Risks and Competing Uses), showcased research outputs in two activity clusters - Managing Resource Variability and Risks for Resilience and Managing Competing Uses and Trade-offs - that can help increase water security for poor rural users while also improving food security and rural livelihoods.

Financing solution for women empowerment in agriculturekamnath2k
This financial solution seeks to empower rural women and widows through an agricultural micro-credit/aid enhanced scheme. Women constitute over 50% of the world’s population and though they perform two-third of the worlds work yet they receive only one hundredth of the world’s income. They constitute 43% of the world’s agricultural labour yet they do not have access and control over land.
For the over 80% of agricultural produce that comes from small farmers in Africa, most of whom are women to be properly harnessed, women will need to be given adequate attention as ‘‘when we empower women, we empower communities, nations and entire human family’’ UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.

Video Impact Assessment: Closing the Impact GapMer Joyce
Last month I created an assessment for an international foundation on the impact of their video grants. The assessment (below) includes analysis and visualization of how 37 grantees used video in their advocacy work, and the effects of that use.
For this project I first analyzed grantee self-reports on how they were using video. I then developed a model comparing grantee activities and outcomes and finally visualized this analysis in the form of an easily skimmable “report card” for each grantee. This public version includes 10 representative reports from among the original 37.

Why aren't Evaluators using Digital Media Analytics?CesToronto
Whether it’s through blogs, tweets, or even the comments section of an online newspaper, the world is increasingly talking online. However, the potential uses for the massive amounts of information available on the internet remain largely untapped in the sphere of evaluation.
This presentation will explore innovative methods to extract these insights from the large and complex collections of digital data publicly available online. In particular, we will examine the unprecedented uses, and potential limitations, of digital media analytics to:
• Measure the outcomes of public outreach, advocacy, communications, and information sharing programs;
• Establish current and retroactive baselines;
• Conduct “borderless” data collection to gain insights from other countries, as well as disapora communities in Canada;
• Identify unknown stakeholder groups and create detailed stakeholder maps; and,
• Provide context and insight to inform further data collection.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Using Digital Accounts to Study Remote Activism Events
• Content analysis
• Global Digital Activism Data Set source
documents
• News stories describing 426 digital
campaigns in 100 countries from 2010-2012
• Main document sources: LexisNexis and
Global Voices Online
• Random sample of 100 campaigns from 61
countries drawn for this study
• Identification and collection of goal
statements in the texts
7. TAKEAWAYS
• Scholarly attention on social movement distracts attention from a wide array of
more numerous activism efforts.
• Online news accounts, particularly citizen journalism, are valuable for the qualitative
analysis of globally dispersed efforts.
• Reactive (threat-reducing) campaigns are far more common than proactive (benefit-
seeking) campaigns.
• More campaigns are organized around immediate threats, such as a planned
reduction of pension benefits, than abstract threats, such as global warming.
