 LTE Direct is an innovative device-to-device technology 
offering privacy sensitive and battery efficient proximity 
based discovery of friends, services, offers, and other 
relevant value in one’s proximity. 
 Creating a digital 6th sense through always-on discovery 
services.
What is LTE –Direct ? 
LTE Direct is creating a Digital 6th Sense through always-on proximal discovery 
services 
Always-on device-to-device discovery of friends, services, offers in one’s 
proximity 
{ Proximal discovery services efficiently integrated with existing LTE Advanced 
services and networks } 
Required to scale up from today’s location-based and proximity beacon 
solutions 
{ Privacy sensitive and battery efficient discovery of 1000s of devices/services in 
the proximity of ~500 meters } 
LTE Direct ecosystem implementation underway – defined in 3GPP R12 
Operator trials throughout 20141; app developers testing innovative use cases 
today with LTE Direct Trial SDK2
Proximity and Location 
 Proximity and Location are of course related, as in: 
- If I know the location of two things or places (say A, B), then I can 
determine how proximate they are (or how close they are). 
- Also, if I'm thing or place (A), and I can detect that (B) is "near" or 
proximate to me, then I may be also able to derive some location 
information. 
A best example is : if (B) is the statue of liberty, and I just figured out it was 
"near" by taking a photo of the statue and goggles to identify it, then I'm 
pretty sure that I'm near New York..
What can be done using Proximity Services 
 The proximity platforms do two key things: 
- Tell you about "devices" nearby (typically devices discoverable and detectable 
because they have some short range wireless on board) 
 
- Let you decide whether any of those devices are "of interest" to you (in other 
words, you can store meta information about them for your own purposes). 
Thus sharing : 
- Person to person stuff - discover and share information about things / people 
nearby - 
- Person to business stuff - enable a business to detect you for reasons of 
triggering coupons, loyalty, offers, deals. 
 Privacy Sensitive, Efficient, Scalable,Always ON proximal discovery.

Conclusion 
 LTE Direct is a new and innovative device-to-device technology being 
standardized in 3GPP-R12. It enables "always-on" discovery of thousands of 
devices and their services in a proximity of 500m, in a privacy sensitive and 
battery efficient way. 
 LTE Direct uses licensed spectrum, allowing mobile operators to employ it to 
offer a range of differentiated applications and services to users. Its potential 
for application development is huge, with possibilities extending to social 
discovery, advertising, gaming, education, emergency services and much 
more. 
 LTE Direct relies on the LTE physical layer to provide a scalable and universal 
framework for discovery and connection 
 A Privacy Sensitive, Efficient, Scalable, Always ON proximal discovery.

  • 3. Introduction  LTE Direct is an innovative device-to-device technology offering privacy sensitive and battery efficient proximity based discovery of friends, services, offers, and other relevant value in one’s proximity.  Creating a digital 6th sense through always-on discovery services.

LTE Direct is creating a Digital 6th Sense through always-on proximal discovery services Always-on device-to-device discovery of friends, services, offers in one’s proximity { Proximal discovery services efficiently integrated with existing LTE Advanced services and networks } Required to scale up from today’s location-based and proximity beacon solutions { Privacy sensitive and battery efficient discovery of 1000s of devices/services in the proximity of ~500 meters } LTE Direct ecosystem implementation underway – defined in 3GPP R12 Operator trials throughout 20141; app developers testing innovative use cases today with LTE Direct Trial SDK2

Proximity and Location  Proximity and Location are of course related, as in: - If I know the location of two things or places (say A, B), then I can determine how proximate they are (or how close they are). - Also, if I'm thing or place (A), and I can detect that (B) is "near" or proximate to me, then I may be also able to derive some location information. A best example is : if (B) is the statue of liberty, and I just figured out it was "near" by taking a photo of the statue and goggles to identify it, then I'm pretty sure that I'm near New York..

What can be done using Proximity Services  The proximity platforms do two key things: - Tell you about "devices" nearby (typically devices discoverable and detectable because they have some short range wireless on board)  - Let you decide whether any of those devices are "of interest" to you (in other words, you can store meta information about them for your own purposes). Thus sharing : - Person to person stuff - discover and share information about things / people nearby - - Person to business stuff - enable a business to detect you for reasons of triggering coupons, loyalty, offers, deals.  Privacy Sensitive, Efficient, Scalable,Always ON proximal discovery.

  • 34. Conclusion  LTE Direct is a new and innovative device-to-device technology being standardized in 3GPP-R12. It enables "always-on" discovery of thousands of devices and their services in a proximity of 500m, in a privacy sensitive and battery efficient way.  LTE Direct uses licensed spectrum, allowing mobile operators to employ it to offer a range of differentiated applications and services to users. Its potential for application development is huge, with possibilities extending to social discovery, advertising, gaming, education, emergency services and much more.  LTE Direct relies on the LTE physical layer to provide a scalable and universal framework for discovery and connection  A Privacy Sensitive, Efficient, Scalable, Always ON proximal discovery.
