2. This is the model. Its
famous grime/rap artist
Dizzee Rascal (Icon),
smiling directly at the
camera (direct address).
He does this to engage with the TA.
Speaking of TA, Dizzee being on the
Cover may attract grime and hip hop
fans because he makes that music,
and his fans will notice this and look
at the magazine. Back to my point,
Dizzee smiling and looking towards
the camera in this main image gives a
bit of a positive representation of his
music, his portraying rap as
outlandish, happy and joyful (Links to
the main cover line “Spreading joy
around the world.”) genre because of
his smiling and his pose. This picture
of him is a full body shot of Dizzee.
This is the masthead. It is the biggest text and has a
unique font along with being bright and red. This is
used to catch the attention people, making the
magazine more noticeable. This also makes it
recognizable for regular readers of the magazine.
NME is a well known brand so audience its audience
will recognize it.
The barcode are used traditionally for
scanning & for the prices of the
magazine.
For the rule of 3rds, Dizzee is in the left
hotspot and so is the big text of his name,
this shifts all of the attention to the left side
of the magazine. There's also a limited
amount of text on the right side, leaving the
entire right section as the least significant
side.
For the mise-en-scene, The
colour scheme is red and white to
make the magazine more
noticeable. The fact that Dizzee
Rascal is in the main image
indicates that this magazine will
mention some for of hip hop,
which will appeal to an audience
that likes hip hop, as Dizzee
Rascal is a hip hop artist. This
theory is also strengthened by
the fact that Dizzee is wearing a
white vest and a gold chain,
which are both famous symbols
for hip hop. There is no strapline,
this may be due to the fact that
this is a well known and well
established magazine company
meaning a strapline would be
unnecessary, and more space
should be used to promote the
contents within the magazine.
The main cover lines font is nearly as big as the
font of the masthead. This outlines the relevance
of it, showcasing how big Dizzee. Another cover
line is a quote from Dizzee, this is a taster for
what people will expect within the magazine of
what Dizzee says in it.
3. The masthead of the contents page is in the
biggest font and has a colour scheme. The
colour scheme is similar to the one on the front
cover, which gives the magazine a certain kind of
recognizable element, giving the brand an
identity. The content page is often overlooked by
magazine readers, so NME made the masthead
of the contents page big so its noticeable and
readers will be aware of where certain stories
(contents) are.
The mise en scence: The contents page has a
well organized layout which makes it more
respectable and easier to read. There are
images on the contents page are linked to their
articles, making the readers aware of what's in
stored.
And concerning the rule of thirds, The main
image is on the middle at the top, showing that
this is the main focus of the contents. The main
image is according to an article in the
magazine. This will attract the target audience
which is people that listen to the music of the
artist on the main image, seeing her will
intrigue her fans because they are invested in
her life like how their invested in her music.
The date is used to
inform when this
magazine came out
(Also gives an
indication of what issue
it is.) More indications
are the page numbers,
to help readers find an
article of their interest.
The main heading is in big font, this will
attract readers to read this article.
Sub headings are used to
make audience find
topics of their interest.
This contents page is missing:
• Grab quotes
• Captions in pictures.
• An editors letter.
In the main image, the
singer is looking
directly at the camera
which is direct address,
which creates a kind of
intimacy, which
engages the reader
more.
4. The model (Dizzee Rascal)
is tagging the wall. This is
quite a negative
representation of hip hop
and its fan, adding to the
stereotype that hip hop
have no disregard for the
law and commit crimes
such as vandalism.
The font for the main
heading is in big font to
grab the attention of
readers.
Another representation of hip hop. The
bottles of alcohol are a representation of the
crazy rapper lifestyle.
5. Elements That Connect these different parts of the
Magazine:
• Big Mastheads/Main images.
• Pictures that link to article.
• Certain representations of hip hop.
• Certain colour scheme (Red, black and white.)
