Codes and conventions:
Archivalfootage: ‘Amy’ used Archivalfootage at the start of the documentary
to show footage to the audience from the past and how she was in her
younger years. Also, the archivalfootage shows us that the documentary may
be using a linear formatwhich means that all the events in the documentary
will be in chronologicalorder. We may not be able to use archivalfootage in
our documentary because we will not be able get any one of the audience
members to show their pastwith anxiety, it would be too personal.
Off screen voices: ‘Amy’ used multiple off-screen voices which was sometimes
the narrator and sometimes it was family/ friends of Amy. The documentary
showed moving images/ clips while the voice over was happening. The voice
over explained their thoughts on Amy and how they felt about Amy. The voice
over gave the audience additional information upon Amy. We will hopefully
use a voice over in our documentary to help give statistics and additional
information to the audience. We will use it over still images/ clips.
Credits: ‘Amy’ uses credits in the documentary to help let the audience know
the name of the subjectand what their profession was or how they were
related to Amy. Credits wereused quite frequently throughoutthe
documentary and this was very crucial as there were a variety of subjects in
*the documentary that were introduced quite frequently. We will definitely be
using credits in our documentary to introduceour experts and what their
profession is. Also, wewill use credits in our documentary to tell the audience
about who the presenter is.
Mode:
The mode of the documentary is Expository. This is becausethe documentary
does not useany presenter and mostly uses subjects to talk and off-screen
voices. Also, I think this documentary is expository because it shows cruciallife
events and issues of Amy’s life. Codes and convention that ‘Amy’ uses such as
actuality footage, graphics, pictures, interview all are conventions of an
Expository documentary. We may use the expository mode for our
documentary as it shows reallife events, interviews and experts which will
explain anxiety in detail to our audience. By using the expository mode, it will
make our documentary very realistic.
Narrativestyle:
‘Amy’ has a closed narrativeas the documentary does not leave any kind of
mystery behind and shows the audience a clear ending, which is unfortunately
Amy passing away. The documentary follows a linear narrativewhich means
that it has a clear timeline and it shows Amy’s lifestyle in order. Itshows
different dates and years throughoutAmy’s lifestyle. In addition, the
documentary is a single strand documentary as it follows the journey of one
main character which is Amy. Ittells the audience the life of Amy. We may use
the samenarrativestructureas Amy because it follows a good chronological
order which keeps the audience entertained and on track with the subject.
Purpose:
The purposeof ‘Amy’ is to inform/to educate the audience because it taught
the audience upon Amy’s lifestyle and it showed the audience her life style up
until her death and whatwas the causeof her death. Our documentary’s
purposewill be nearly the exactly the same as Amy’s becauseour topic is
serious and we want to educate the audience and make them more awareof
the topic and how important it is. However, wewant to include morefacts and
statistics than Amy as Amy did not include many facts/statics as it was more
focused on the subject’s lifestyle.
