Its simple and contrasts well with the white background and doesn’ t clash with the rest of the front cover e.g. image. Use of flasher The flasher is there to excite readers about the content of the magazine through short snappy and exciting quotes, such as; “ wowee zowee ’ . Though the flasher is noticeable it doesn ’ t overpower the image and the image of dizee rascal is still the main focus. The quote in the flasher also links into his expression on his face, it is almost as though he is saying ‘ wowee zowee ’ Background The background is busy with graffiti behind dizzee rascal. The use of graffiti may connote his past and maybe where he grew wup as an artist and because the graffiti is behind him, this may also suggest its something of his past and that he has moved on from them times rule of thirds Pull Quote A pull quote is used to draw readers into the magazine. Also as there are a lot of bands listed; this shows that there is a variety of bands readers can choose to read upon and also that NME provide their readers with a variety . Banner at the top This shows the readers clearly that this is the contents page and also the colour scheme fits in with the styling. Date The date of issue shows the reader that they have the most up to date issue of the magazine . Editors intro to contents The editor addresses the reader in an informal manner and this shows that the magazine is suited for more of a younger audience but not too young. The intro is what stands out most on this page and the writing contrasts the black background. The reason may be so that the readers read what it says. It talks about gigs and festivals and this may show that the magazine is targeted at those people who have an interest in music festivals/gigs. Double page spread analysis By line Who the article has been written by Picture Credits Name of person (photographer) who took the pictures Tagline This caption labels ‘ dizee ’ , this is a convention some magazines use so that readers know that the article/articles are still about that person/topic. Standfirst This is an introduction to the article and who the article is about. In this example it introduces dizee rascal and speaks about his career briefly. This is a magazine convention, but not all magazines use this. Main Headline The headline is set out in a bold and upper case format, the alignment of the words are also unequal and this may represent dizzee rascals uneven past etc. it also sets an urban theme, as does the picture of the beer bottles and toppled cups. Layout/House Style The house style of the magazine has remained consistent throughout. From the front cover, contents page and now on this double page spread. NME have cleverly continued with the colours red black and white in this article, and the red has come from the clothing being worn by dizzee rascal. Each paragraph of the article has approximately 75-100 words and is set out in 4 columns. Images The main image is of dizzee rascal with a spray can in his hand and him looking back mischievously . The background set which he is placed in is full of graffiti and this may connote his personal background and where he was brought up (London), The use of graffiti may have also been used so that younger people who are living in London with familiar backgrounds to dizzee rascal can relate to him and this would attract them to buy the magazine. Him, holding the spray can sends out a powerful message that though he has come far from his past, he still hasn’ t forgotten his roots and what brought him here, maybe he is trying to say ‘ don ’ t forget where you first came from ’ .
