The Victorian Er Collin s Challenging Traditional Gender...
The Victorian Era: Collin s Challenging Traditional Gender Roles In 1868, British author Wilkie
Collins wrote what is now famously known as one of the first full length detective stories, The
Moonstone. Within this text, he explores and transcends his writing style, as he created an atmosphere
full of suspense and gothic tradition by making use of two genres famous in the Victorian Era (Ayton,
2). As Collins managed to challenge the roles of men and women within The Moonstone, he
ultimately attempts to reverse genders by creating a story of conflict, where the women are essentially
in charge. As many gender stereotypes are expressed within The Moonstone through the different
narrators of the novel, almost all of them become discredited as we are introduced to the other
characters. By making use of the characters like Betteredge, Lady Verinder, and finally Rachel
Verinder, Collins novel proves to break society s barrier of expected roles for men and women within
the Victorian Era. During the Victorian period, men and women s roles became more sharply defined
than at any time in history. This concept of roles, became extremely significant within Wilkie Collins
The Moonstone (1868), as he incorporated the issues seen during that era, with the roles and
expectations of the women in his novel. Because many of the women seen throughout Collins novel
are more assertive than one would expect from a Victorian novelist, Collins shows women acting
forcefully on their own, which

Ice Fish Personal Response
Personal response I thought this article was helpful and fun to read. Some of these techniques in the
article would have been helpful the last couple weeks. I have learned a few new things from this
article and I enjoyed it. Plot The plot would most likely be on the ice. The author Steve Ryan is
directing this to ice fishers that need some more help trying to ice fish. While sitting on the ice trying
to get a few gills he found a few tricks that have seemed to work for him and has shared them with
other anglers trying to get a few fish. Characterization There wasn t really any characters in the article
besides that he was directing to anglers on the ice. He has been putting articles online for ice fishers to
see and hopefully helps them in their future on slaying the fish. ... Show more content on

Whether you re fishing on a lake, river, and pond or wherever you re trying to catch fish through the
ice. If you re fishing in deep or shallow waters it depends on how you jig your lure and what you use.
Although the color can effect if they bite or not to. Theme The theme is to get fishermen to understand
what and how to catch more fish through the ice. A lot of anglers that attempt to catch fish say the fish
aren t biting. Most of the time they won t switch there lures or the way they are jigging there lure.
Steve Ryan the author of the article says everything you do matters when your ice fishing because fish
are picky. Recommend I would recommend this article to anybody that likes to go ice fishing or
people that would give it a try. I believe if more people knew how to catch the fish they would go but

Gluten Free Diet Analysis
What should be the Autism Diet
Autism is a complex developmental and neurological condition that typically appears during the first
three years of life. People with autism have a leaky gut or intestine, which allows parts of gluten and
casein to seep in to the blood stream and affect the brain and central nervous system. It affects brain
function, particularly in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. The main systems of
autism are delayed talking, lack of interest in playing with other children, not wanting to be held or
cuddled and poor eye contact.
Autism can lead to health concern like:
Limit food selection/strong food dislikes
Not eating enough food
Constipation
Medication interactions
Diet for Autism:
There is some evidence showing that a gluten free diet when combined with casein free diet helps to
improve the behavior of children with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Static Electricity In Atlanta
The chilly winter months in Atlanta can give you a sudden jolt... literally. This is because of the
increase in the production of static electricity during the winter months due to the absence of moisture
in the air as compared to the summer and monsoon seasons. With static electricity being omnipresent
in our hair, clothes, and also on our doorknobs, it is no surprise that Atlanta electricians receive a large
number of calls asking them for ways and means to eliminate static electricity. The clothes sticking to
your body and the standing hair after a removing your woolen skull cap are nothing but signs of static
electricity. Static electricity is the accumulation of negatively and positively charged electrons on the
surface of materials that

Critical Analysis Of Binsey Poplars By Gerard Manley...
Right now, many forests are being relentlessly decimated in order to meet our needs. In the poem
Binsey Poplars written by Gerard Manley Hopkins in 1879, the speaker considers this issue while
lamenting over the destruction of a line of poplar trees. In this essay, I will argue that the poem shows
mankind s own fragility through the felling of the trees because of the speaker s emphasis on the
contrast between nature and its destruction and the way nature and humans are associated with the use
of imagery and figurative language. I will first examine the poem s sorrowful tone and the way the
text s content opposes nature s beauty and its deforestation caused by humans. Then, I will analyze
how the poem s form support this opposition through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The speaker uses this event to expand his view on the way mankind destroys nature without meaning
to. In the second and third stanzas, we are actually blamed for this irreversible damage, as seen in O if
we but knew what we do / When we delve or hew (9 10) and To mend her we end her (16). By using
the first person plural pronoun, the speaker includes not only themselves, but also the reader, who is
also a human being, and in a general sense, part of mankind. However, humans are not only the agent
of destruction, but the object of it as well. For instance, the repetition of the letter l in All felled, felled,
are all felled (3) may form a visual representation of a line of trees, or a line of people. Moreover,
there is a personification of nature throughout the poem; according to the speaker, nature is a woman,
as said in Since country is so tender / To touch, her being so slender (12 13) and To mend her we end
her (17). Whereas there are some neutral correlations between human beings and the natural world,
they are also linked through the pain and damage that is inflicted to them. Hack rack (11) are
originally aimed at the growing green (11). However, those verbs are associated to prick (15) and
sleek (14) as well due to the consonance of the sound ck . As a consequence of that association, the
sleek and seeing ball (14), the human eye (15), feels the brutality of the tree felling,

Analysis Of George Orwell s Nineteen Eighty Four
Fear is created not by the world around us, but in the mind, by what we think is going to happen
(Elizabeth Gawain). In Nineteen Eighty Four, George Orwell locates his novel in a politically
dystopian society. A dystopia is a bad place , being translated from the Greek words dis topos. This
term was created to be seen as the opposite of a Utopia after the novel Utopia was written by Thomas
More. Dystopian novels are written to daunt the reader of how future societies will turn out. The term
has become more common in today s society and is translated into, a dark or unpleasant future.
Nineteen Eighty Four shows that obtaining a perfect society is not possible without taking away the
free will of citizens. Orwell wrote this novel in hopes to share his image of how future society may be.
Orwell creates a totalitarian oligarchy committed to holding the position of power. This oligarchy
creates an overall fear throughout the novel. There have been many twentieth century dystopian
novels that have been written after Nineteen Eighty Four such as The Handmaid s Tale by Margaret
Atwood, A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, and We by Zamyatin, Yevgeny translated by
Gregory Zilboorg These novels came after Nineteen Eighty Four, Orwell created a base for these other
dystopian novels. In Nineteen Eighty Four, Orwell displays the dehumanization of citizens through the
dystopian genre which is created to induce fear upon the reader for the upcoming future. The strength

Pglo Transformation Lab Report
Tiffany O Connor November 9th, 2017 Plasmid Transformation
Purpose: Plasmid transformation is the process of transferring foreign exogenous DNA into a host cell
to change its phenotype.
Theory and Background: Plasma transformation can occur naturally when a cell alters its genetics by
taking in DNA from its environment. Genetic transformation can also be induced in a laboratory
setting, called artificial transformation. Artificial transformation is accomplished by choosing a
competent bacterium and introducing a plasmid.
E. Coli is the bacteria used in this lab. The pGLO plasmid is being introduced. This plasmid contains
genes for GFP ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is called Heat Shocking , a rapid increase in heat opens pores on the cell membrane and propels
the DNA into the cell. Immediately following, place the foam rack with the test tubes back on ice and
incubate for two minutes. This incubation time allows the ampicillin resistant gene to start replicating.
After two minutes remove the tubes from the ice. Using a sterile pipet add 250 ul of LB nutrient to
each test tube. The LB nutrient provides the cell necessary nutrients needed for the cell to reproduce.
Incubate the tubes for 10 minutes at room temperature.
Lastly, tap each test tube with your finer to mix the contents. Using a sterile pipet put half of the
suspension from the P on to the LB plate and the other half of the suspension on to the LB/A plate.
Using a sterile cotton swab, spread the suspension evenly around the surface of both plates. Now put
half of the suspension from the +P tube onto the LB/AMP plate and the other half of the +P
suspension on to the LB/AMP/ARA plate. Using a new sterile cotton swab, spread the suspension

ANTIGONE KEY LITERARY ELEMENTS
SETTING
This tragedy is set against the background of the Oedipus legend. It illustrates how the curse on the
House of Labdacus (who is the grandson of Cadmus, founder of Thebes, and the father of Laius,
whose son is Oedipus) brought about the deaths of Oedipus and his wife mother, Jocasta, as well as
the double fratricide of Eteocles and Polynices. Furthermore, Antigone dies after defying King Creon.
The play is set in Thebes, a powerful city state north of Athens. Although the play itself was written in
441 B.C., the legend goes back to the foundations of Hellenic culture, many centuries before
Sophocles time.
All the scenes take place in front of the royal palace at Thebes. Thus Sophocles ... Show more content

The leader of the Chorus
Occasionally speaks a few lines addressed mainly to the audience. He is given the final lines of the
play, in which he draws a moral from the sequence of tragic events the audience has just witnessed.
CONFLICT
Protagonist
Antigone is the resolute and strong willed daughter of King Oedipus. She is determined to give her
brother, Polynices, a decent burial. She consciously risks her life with this action, which violates both
Creon s unjust decree, as well as the ancient custom of denying burial to enemies of the state. She
obeys only the laws of the gods and the dictates of familial loyalty and social decency.
Antagonist
King Creon regards only the requirement of political expediency. Soon after the civil strife between
Eteocles and Polynices ends in their deaths, he announces a decree denying Polynices burial. He is
unrelenting in his stance, as he wants Thebans to know that he is a firm ruler. Thus he sentences his
own niece, Antigone, to death for defying his law.
Climax
The climax of the play occurs during the encounter between Creon and Antigone. It is a scene marked
by dramatic contrast. Here one can see the incompatibility between Creon s world of physical power
(which he takes to be absolute) and the world of spiritual, idealistic strength which Antigone
represents. Creon s vanity is hurt and his anger aroused by the stubborn disobedience of one whom he
considers to be merely a mad woman.

Indigenous Policy Making
Policy making can be a complicated process, from identifying issues that need to be addressed right up
to the evaluation stage to ensure that policy aims have been met. When determining whether a case of
policy making has been successful or not is thus difficult to pinpoint. This paper will look into two
cases of policy making, the Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program (SIHIP)
established in 2007, as well as Australia s immigration policy towards asylum seekers through
Operation Sovereign Borders. By comparing both cases to the policy cycle model, as put forth by
Althaus et. al, this paper will then deduce whether the aforementioned cases have been successful or
not. Although there are many ways to analyse the process of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Up until this point, the SIHIP s overall policy design is sound; key issues have been identified, more
specific challenges have been deduced and analysed, and an appropriate (albeit ambitious) proposal to
combat the root issues has been put forth. It is when the policy cycle model is followed onto the next
stage of consultation that sees a deviation from producing an effective policy. The use of external
consultants, though being a reasonable tool to aid in ensuring community needs were being met, was
found to be over exhausted, and meant that the allocated budget for the project was insufficient in
order to actually construct and repair the proposed houses. Contributing to this increase in costs was
that the community response detailed that the proposed housing was inadequate. This feedback was
accepted and therefore included in SIHIP, resulting in the cost increase from $450,000 per house to

Popular Culture Film And Music
Popular culture film and music has long since been awash with drug references and imagery. The
context of these references has majorly affected the way in which they are received and perceived by
the wider public, expressly in times of social or political change and unrest. The context in which
these images and sounds are being interpreted affect the response to racial vilification, representation,
along with gender roles and stereotypes. Conventional practice in the entertainment industries has
developed over time but drugs, their users and dealers, including the consumption and production,
continue to be portrayed in a mainly negative light, showing the complexity of this particular social
process.
Context, being the time and place in which the medium is being produced, assumes a major
responsibility in the portrayal of drugs themselves, the user, the dealer and the trafficker. Zinberg s
(1984) description of drug use as drug, set and setting presents strongly in the notion of context. This
is evident in the portrayal of a drug on screen as it becomes increasingly popular amongst the public.
Social and political changes affect usage and its representation of drugs in a community and the wider
world. The 1960s and 70s saw a hippie, anti establishment counterculture emerge and with this came
an expansion of drug culture. Music and videos released at this time by The Beatles such as the
psychedelic Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds video (1967) and much of the 1967 album,

Employee Turnover And The Banking Sector
Employee Turnover in the Banking Sector The current global business environment is proving to be
shaky especially due to the ripple effects of globalization. Both local and international businesses are
increasingly feeling the pressure to grow initial investments in order to fulfill the needs of
stakeholders. Even as these businesses continue to make adjustment to measure up to the international
standard thresholds, the area of human resources continues to readjust itself in accordance with current
market demands. Clarke et al (2010) documented that the field of human resource has for a long time
been considered the epicenter of any economy s development processes. The highly competitive
business environment coupled with highly deteriorating on social conditions that have weighed in on
the employees thus causing high turnover in the banking institutions. Various definitions of employee
turnover have cropped, however, according to Griffeth (2004), employee turnover is considered to be
the ratio of the total headcount of members that have left an organization within a specified period
divided by the standard number of employees during the period under consideration. It has widely
been interpreted as a measure of general effectiveness of human resources in that a high turnover
translates to low effectiveness and vice versa. Employee turnover is a big problem prevalent in many
institutions and is mostly associated with actions taken by organizations to reduce expenses and

The newly created firm will have a market share of 27.14% after summing the market of share of 14.5.
% for Tigo and 12.6% for Airtel respectively. The combine market shares (27.1%) of the two firms is
lesser than that of MTN with market share of 48.5% .Using the market shares reveals that MTN will
still have more dominance in the market than the newly created firm from the merger. This provides
proof of the fact that the newly created firm would not have much control over the market in using
predatory pricing to drive competitors and potential competitors out of the market. The merger should

The concern of the regulator will be to determine if the merger could raise or reduce the welfare of
consumers. That is if the reduction in cost measured by the lower average cost would be sufficiently
large relative to the rise in price, then the merger would improve welfare of consumers as cost saved
will be greater than deadweight loss. But if the rise in price after the merger is sufficiently large
relative to the reduction in average cost then the merger lowers welfare (deadweight loss). The antitrust
authorities can determine if the merger would enhance welfare or not depending on how reacts to the
merger. The goal of competitors is to determine whether the merged firm will provide quality or worse
services compared to the combined premerger services provided by the firms engage in the merger. If
the quality of services provided by the merged firms falls then competitors will be better off, since
demand for their service is likely to increase. The increase in demand for the services of competitors
induces them to provide more to the market, but on the net the total quality of service provided in the
industry would falls creating higher prices, in that case the merger will not be challenge by the
competitors. The higher price resulting from the merger reduces welfare as consumer surplus falls. On

Lesson That Help Me
The Lesson That Helped Me More Than Anything A character in Norton Juster s The Phantom

it was something that helped him. As we grow up we question a lot of the things that we are taught,
like how is it going to help us in the future. For me it was treating others the way you want to be
treated. To me I thought that we should treat others the way they treat us. My family tried to show me
that that wasn t the answer and that nothing is going to work if you don t know how to move on from
what they have done for you. Today I m in highschool and I can tell you that treating others the way
you want to be treated rather than treating them like they treated you is very important. People mature
and learn from their mistakes and often need to be accepted into a different group. Some kids don t
know where they want to be so they treat some people different than others. In elementary school I

The Development And Development Of The Greek And Greek Empire
The Roman Republic and Empire was one of the largest civilisations in the world. A significant
question posed is how and why did the Roman Republic and Empire develop in the ways they did and
interact with the Persian and Greek/Hellenic Empires? At the height of the Roman Empire it spanned
across western Europe, and encompassed the entire Mediterranean. Lasting and developing through
thousands of years, the Romans encountered and interacted with the Persian and Greek/Hellenic
Empires. This included trading, co existing, and going to war with one another. Although, originally
the Roman Republic and Empire was first founded by the Etruscan people. Established in 753 BCE by
a Etruscan colony on the River Tiber in Italy, the city was controlled by Etruscan Kings until 509
BCE. Whence the people rose up against the monarchy to establish the Roman Republic, and fought
for control of central Italy for the next 30 years. (Dr David Lundberg, 2017, pp.6 7) Thus the Roman
Republic became a contending force in Western Europe, and across the Mediterranean for the next 450
years. (J.M.Roberts Odd Arne Westad, 2013, p.218) Instead of a king, two consuls and an assembly of
elected magistrates were installed to rule the Roman Republic. Before a new set of consuls, and new
magistrates were elected by the citizens each year. Additionally, legislative and consultative bodies
were elected as Tribunes of the people, who managed the affairs of the government and managed
conflicts that arose

Project Management Essay
Project Management
Although a development team does most of the work, it is the project manager that is running the
development process. All human activity that involves carrying out a project needs a plan. We call this
Project Management. But there is a big difference between projects that involve one or two people and
projects that involve large numbers of people. There is always a smaller group of individuals behind
all larger groups that is planning, directing, and motivating those people. There are three main parts to
project management: start date, finish date, and all the tasks that need to be carried out. When the plan
starts to involve different things happening at different times, most of which are dependant upon each
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is room to be creative and in many aspects of planning and leading.
The first step in planning a project could be specification. This is a term that can be defined as stating
the problem or what is trying to be solved by this particular project. There can be a lot of confusion in
this stage of project planning, such as the misunderstanding of intent (Winning Project Management).
A way to avoid such conflict is to maybe write out an agreement before the project showing that
everyone understands exactly what is to be expected. The next step would be structure. Having
decided the many specifications, it is time to figure out exactly what needs to be done and how to do
it. There has to be some kind of framework built by the manager. Structure also links all of the tasks
together instead of everything being done on individual basis. This creates a sense of unity among
your project team. To move forward with the planning process, you need to transform the
specifications into a complete set of tasks that are linked together. If the planning of a project becomes
too complicated then that means that the tasks need to be broken down into even smaller ones. This is
also a great way to learn each and every detail of the project. Planning too much detail could be a fault
by the project manager as well. You should just break it down as far enough for your team to
understand it. The next stage would be task

Women s Conditions In The Victorian Age
For many years, women have been considered inferior to men and, as a consequence, they have been
subservient to men and to their own families. For instance, they had to be chaste, obedient,
sympathetic, powerless, they could not go out when they wanted or dressed as they liked, but they
were expected to stay at home and dedicated themselves to the education of children and to the
domestic cleaning.
In the history of the United Kingdom, an important period that contributed to the subsequent
independence of women was the Victorian Age. During this era, we can identify three types of
women:
Women who belonged to the nobility class; they were educated and they had the opportunity to enjoy
a luxurious life.
Middle class women; one of their main goals was to marry a noble man in order ... Show more content

Literary Elements In Love Medicine By Louise Erdrich
Literary elements appear in all exceptional literature, they are what helps build a strong story. There
are many literary elements visible in Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich. In the novel there are
elements such as foreshadowing, tone, several examples of symbolism, and several major themes. In
Love Medicine foreshadowing is demonstrated several times throughout the novel. In the second
scene Albertine Johnson describes her family by saying, Patient Abuse. There was two ways you could
think of that title. One was obvious to a nursing student, and the other was obvious to a Kashpaw (7).
This tells the reader several details about Albertine and her family. First of all, it informs the reader of
Albertine s schooling and how she is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One recurring symbol is June Kashpaw as Jesus Christ. The first time the author symbolizes her as
Jesus occurs as she is walking home right before she dies, The snow fell deeper that Easter than it had
in forty years, but June walked over it like water and came home (7). She is similar to Jesus because
both of them walk on water. Another time she is symbolized as Jesus is during the chapters, Crown of
Thorns and Resurrection. Even the chapter titles represent Jesus because he wore a crown of thorns
and was resurrected from the dead. In Resurrection Gordie Kashpaw, June s husband, imagines June is
resurrected like Jesus, and he hits her while driving. Although in reality, Gordie hits a deer, but
because he has guilt for treating June badly during their time together, he imagines he hits June.
Another literary element in Love Medicine is theme. Two themes from this novel are family and
assimilation. The family relationships of the Kashpaws are so important and confusing in this novel. It
is demonstrated by the family tree diagram in the beginning of the novel. The author would not have
put the diagram there, if family is not an important. Another theme is assimilation of the Native
Americans to the American culture. The family partially assimilates from its Chippewa roots to those
of Western Christians. As a child Marie desires to have a life with the nuns, so she rejects her tribal
heritage and assimilates. However towards the end

Vietnam Veterans Against The War Essay
Brief History The first American troops arrived in Danang, South Vietnam on 8th March, 1965. The
troops mission was to defend the American airfield from the Viet Cong insurgents. However, their
mission gradually extended to defensive patrolling and later on taking the offensive. As such, the
number of US troops swelled to 184,300 by the end of the year and by1969, the number of American
soldiers had swelled to 543,000. Correspondingly, opposition against the mission, which was
previously minimal, rose magnanimously. In April 1967, a crowd of over 100,00 people marched from
Central Park to the United Nations Buildings to ask for the withdrawal of American troops from
Vietnam. By this time, over 8,000 American troops had been lost in the war. Following the protests,
six Vietnam Veterans, among those who had returned home formed the organization Vietnam Veterans
Against the War (VVAW). They wanted the government to bring their brothers back home.
Authenticity of the VVAW The main arguments for the authenticity of the Vietnam Veterans Against
the War was the idea that it empowered the individual as a change agent in the sense that the veteran
soldiers spoke out to forewarn their fellow soldiers about the conditions of war. It also served to speak
out for the hundreds of soldiers who were still on the mission to protect the nation from the harm that
they had faced and to champion for the morality of the American soldier as idealized in their training.

Effective Use Of Metaphors In Fences By August Wilson
Many people use metaphors to make an example or for people to better understand a given statement.
In the play Fences by August Wilson two main metaphors are redundant; most involving fences. Every
character is shown having their own meaning and need for their metaphorical fences. Wilson wrote a
play that would not only show deeper meaning than what is being said but one that showed a greater
insight on the lives of a small family. The first character is Troy Maxon. The significance of Troy s
metaphorical fence is built upon throughout the play. In troys case his metaphorical fence is to keep
death away from him, his things, and the ones he loves. Alright...Mr. Death. See now.... I m gonna tell
you what i m gonna do. I m gonna take me a fence around this yard. See? I m gonna build me a fence
around what belongs to me. And then you to stay on the other side. See? Stay over there until your
ready for me... (2.2). In this scene you see an insight on how Troy thinks of the fence as more than just
any fence, he thinks of it as something that could even stop the forces of death from entering his
home. Troy s efforts to wall off his home resonate with his ongoing conflict with Mr. Death by
fortifying the perimeter of his home, Troy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

mother so that he could mend his fence with her back together; although she accepts him back with
loving arms it still shows Cory s resentment to troy when he refuses to go to his funeral. This shows
that Cory has kept the people he loves in his fence and the ones who hurt him were left on the other

Analysis Of Prometheus And The First People By Olivia E....
Prometheus And The First People is a historical work of art written by Olivia E. Coolidge. What the
Greeks believe at the time man was created there was no sorrow or wicked ways, a war was unknown
to man. Zeus entrusted their creation to two brothers, Prometheus and Epimetheus. Epimetheus took
over all things but got forced to appeal to Prometheus for help. Prometheus later was tortured by Zeus
for making humankind like the gods. After centuries Prometheus was released and him, along with the
other gods created woman. Then flooded the earth to kill all evil. This essay will examine, Prometheus

One day her curious mind got the best of her. She opened the box, and all the dark shadows of hunger,
disease, war, greed, anger, jealousy, toil, and all the other hardships man would now have to face
flooded out into the world. Oliva E. Coolidge wrote Prometheus and the First People for a particular
purpose. Oliva wanted people to understand the importance of making a decision. Each choice you
make may not only affect you, but it may affect others. Prometheus decision caused him to be tortured
by Zeus for hundreds of years. Afterwards, it caused the gods to create a woman for man. Each god
gave the woman a special gift. They gave her things like beauty and curiosity, and her curiosity is
what got the best of her. She opened the box the gods told her never to open and flooded out evil into
the world. She caused everyone to experience severe and live it that kind of world. The world filled
with so much evil, murders, robberies, and treachery the gods choose to destroy it. The gods flooded
the Earth sparing only two people, an elderly couple. The old couple was named Deucalion and
Pyrrha, and they were chosen to live because they lived their lives in truth and justice. The two were
too old to recreate more humans, so they prayed to the gods. They ended up gathering stones and
throwing them behind. Each stone Deucalion threw turned into a man and each stone Pyrrha threw a
woman it became. They thought that since Earth was their mother, they could

The Objectification of Women in “on the Road” a Feminist...
Michael Prather
12/4/08
Essay #2
The Objectification of Women in On the Road A Feminist Criticism In On the Road there is an ever
present objectification of women. As a result, the woman loses her human qualities and can be
compared to an inanimate object. There are several ways in which this objectification takes form in
the novel. It is achieved through the act of gazing at women. The woman can also be used as a means
to achieve something else, in this case sensual pleasure. Since the culture described in the novel is
highly hedonistic, pleasure in terms of sex is crucial to Sal and his friends. Treating women as objects
also implies to me that they are replaceable in the same way as items are obtained, used, disposed of
and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, when he describes her breasts as straight and true it is implied that she looks the way a
beautiful woman should. Likewise, his second girlfriend Lucille is introduced in the text as a beautiful
Italian honey haired darling (On the Road 111). In the two quotations above, neither Terry nor Lucille
receives a detailed description of their inner features; their beauty and sexual charisma seem enough.
Undoubtedly, there is a recurring pattern in the narrator s characterization of women. The male gaze in
On the Road is not only a matter of characterization and introduction of the characters in the text, but
it is also a highly characteristic feature of the story itself as a pattern of action for the male characters.
In quite a number of central events Dean and Sal are actively gazing at women in a highly objectifying
way. Dean is on a constant look out for new acquaintances, and for Sal every city brings the
possibility to see women that are exotic to him. When visiting Chicago the two friends hardly do any
usual sight seeing, but instead they search for beautiful girls all over the city. The first night Dean
exclaims as he is about to enter a bar: What a weird town wow, and that woman in that window up
there, just looking down with her big breasts hanging from her nightgown, big wide eyes ( On The
Road 224 225). Here Dean expresses an almost childish joy of exploring the local women and their

Orange Play Doch Research Paper
Results The study revealed differences between the effects of Superflab, uncooked rice, green Play
Doh, and orange Play Doh when used as a bolus material. Each bolus type resulted in a different
Dmax when irradiated five separate times with two hundred monitor units (MU) with a field size of
10cm x 10cm (See Table 2). The solid water was the control variable in the experiment and the values
that resulted from irradiation of the solid water compared to each bolus variable resulted in different
values. Table 1 recorded the ratios that resulted from these values. ANOVA calculations from the
values shown in Table 1 resulted in an F value of 762.65. A large difference between the groups
resulted in a large F value. However, there was little difference ... Show more content on

The P value less than 0.01, from the Tukey HSD test, shows that the outcomes are not coincidental but
that there is a numerical or scientific reason for the results of the experiment. The outcomes of the
experiment show that there are significant differences between each bolus type. Exact bolus
placement, calculating constant air pressure and room temperature, rounding errors, and human error
are limitations that could skew the results of this experiment. The results are consistent with prior
studies that indicate there are alternative bolus material options that are more effective than Superflab.
According to the ratios to water in Table 1, investigators conclude that uncooked rice is the best
alternative to Superflab due to the fact that it is more similar and consistent than Superflab to solid
water when providing Dmax. The data infers that although using the alternative variables will suffice
as bolus, the compositions of Superflab, green Play Doh, and orange Play Doh do not provide the
maximum dose build up as well as uncooked rice. In conclusion, this experiment narrows the
informational gap when researching bolus materials and provides an answer to the question of which
bolus will be best to use in radiation

Conan O Brien Commencement Speech Analysis
ENGL101 Final
May 15, 2012
Invention
Conan O Brien gave his commencement speech at Dartmouth in 2011, congratulating the graduating
class and imparting a few words of wisdom.During his speech, he appealed mostly to pathos and
ethos, being as this was a commencement speech, there wasn t very much need to appeal to logos
using stats or facts. He used pathos to appeal to the graduating students by telling about his falling out
with NBC and how he came back to fame with his talk show on TBS. He said I am here to tell you
that whatever you think your dream is now, it will probably change. And that s okay. When saying
that, he was telling them that it s okay to be faced with failure or a change of plans, that it s not the

After joking for a bit and really , his audience s attention and loosening up, he went into the ending of
the body of his speech and continued into the conclusion with what you would normally expect from a
commencement speech; life lessons and a few personal stories. Although he did give some good
advice, he said another hallmark of great commencement speeches is deep, profound advice like reach
for the stars. Well today, I am not going to waste your time with empty clichés. Instead of using old
clichés and timeless words of advice such as reach for the stars he gave more practical advice, like the
advice that your dreams will change some time or another, and that s okay. He concluded his speech
by quoting himself from his last program on NBC, by saying Work Hard, be kind, and amazing things
will happen. I feel that this quote is pretty much self explanatory, but very true.
Style
Being true to himself, Conan used humor all throughout his speech, undoubtedly keeping the audience
s attention through the whole speech. Being a comedian and television talk show host, Conan has
become well known as a comedian, so the use of humor during his speech was appropriate, and was
effective in being enjoyable and keeping his audience s attention. Through his use of humor and
movement, the speech seemed less of a deep, heart felt speech, but more of a conversational, relaxing
and enjoyable speech.
He related to the graduating class by jokingly

How Is Socrates Clever
Socrates is a great philosopher. Since the beginning of the trial he starts asking philosophical questions
to defend himself from the Athenians. When the accuser called him clever he hit them with the
question of what does it mean to be actually clever? Also, he aroused the concern that the ones that
accused him now are aware that the audience might believed their accusations because they are more
in risk of their own beliefs, but if they were younger they will simply lack proves. This is just a simple
comparison to Beardsleys point of view that people grow up to have beliefs that are passed down by
family members or society. Socrates went on his own ways to practice philosophical investigation by

Cinematography Analysis Of Polanski s Chinatown
Cinematography Analysis in Chinatown
Chinatown is based on Roman Polanski s lifeworks. Polanski s goal is to emphasizes the meaning of
how cinematography is made, and how it inspires by understanding the concept of setting, lighting,
and how the image is captured. This film was released in 1974 by director of Roman Polanski to focus
on private investigator J.J. Gittes, played by Jack Nicholson to investigate the elements behind the
truth. Polanski s goal is to emphasize the audience to give an ominous feeling of the main character,
J.J. Gittes and his point of view by showing in color instead of black and white pictures. Due to these
reasons, Polanski wanted to use Panavision to give a flawed vision about the past, which the story is
set in the years of 1937. Polanski states, a traditional detective story with a new, modern shape for

of the setting, but the concept of cinematography that connects duplicates occurrences together that
describe three categories: background of the cinematographer, point of view of the main character, and
the interpretation of the ending scenes.
First of all, Roman Polanski hired John A. Alonzo as the Director of Photography for Chinatown.
Therefore, Alonzo was well known for his notable works, as Director of Photography position after

family again. This movie is very deep and difficult to watch because it forces me reflect on how badly
Africans and African Americans have been treated, but it also makes me proud that things are better. I
believe that this movie is historically accurate because the portrayal of the conditions on the ship was
as badly as they were during slavery. I feel this movie accurately depicts life as an African slave and
how hard it is to let go of everything someone has learned and conform to a new identity. I believe the
movie explains all points of perception from the slaves point of view to the slave owners to the
capturers and even the captain of the ship s experience. Although the movie is dramatized, it is very
believable. I would rate this movie an 8.5 so far because I haven t had the chance to see the whole

Gaga Case Study Essay
Lady Gaga Case
1) As Troy Carter the option I would pursue for Lady Gaga is the first one which is of continuing with
the arena tour. It does not make any financial sense to cancel the show completely given the fact that
they have already incurred sunk cost of $4 million in developing the Fame Kills Tour with Kanye
West and this amount cannot be recovered. So the third option is out of the picture. In any business,
those who take risks can reap great rewards than those who are afraid to do so. Therefore it s better to
build upon the already laid foundation and proceed with the tours than cancelling because of fear of
incurring more loses.
The other option is to go for a smaller theater tour. Usually in the music industry upcoming ... Show

Gaga s gross profits. So since the small venue tour is not profitable Live Nation, WME, and Hew
record label Interscope are likely to go for the arena tour because it has high ticket sales and large
capacity and it means high profits if the percentage of ticket sold is 100%. More so to WME it means
more money to them due to high gross profit gained by Gaga. The success of the tour results in Gaga s
increase of fame which can bring in more revenues from other avenues like merchandising,
commercials or endorsements. So at the end of the day these three partners has a lot to gain hence the
reason why they have the same preferences of going for the big arena tour in spite of the risk involved.

Cultural Narratives Influence On Society
In the short amount of time that humanity has inhabited this planet, we have managed to leave a
bigger imprint than any other species. The human population is well over 7 billion individuals and the
presence of humanity is extended to all four corners of the globe. As a result of the large population,
intellectual superiority, and the wide range of human existence, humanity has naturally transformed
into a diverse populace. Consequently, cultural narratives are prominent in our daily lives and play a
role in shaping our social interactions, opinions, and lifestyles. The influence of cultural narratives
have only expanded with the growth in technology. Technology provides a platform for individuals to
be connected with regions on the opposite side of the globe within seconds. This advancement has led
to the widespread dispersion of cultural traditions and tendencies. This is evident in the news, social
media, and other media platforms. Different cultures have developed different beliefs about what
norms are and abide by those beliefs. If someone falls out of the lines of normality, most people
immediately formulate an ethnocentric mindset and begin to create opinions that that person s culture
is inferior to their own.
My family and I are especially aware of the degree of influence that cultural narratives have on
society. The reason why cultural narratives have such a considerable influence in our daily lives is due
to the fact that we originate from a Muslim background.

Persuasive Essay About Illegal Immigration
Illegal Immigration Illegal immigration in the U.S first began with the Chinese in the 1800 s. The big
reasons they migrated to the U.S was to work in the gold mines, build railroads, and work in
agricultural jobs. Americans didn t like the idea of the Chinese taking all the labor. For that reason the
Chinese were being discriminated and a law was passed. The law was known as the Chinese
Exclusion Act, it restricted the Chinese from immigrating to the United States for 10 years. It also
demanded for all Chinese flying into and out of the country to have a certificate that identified their
status. The Act wasn t repealed till 1943. Of course later on and even today many other ethnics that
migrated to the U.S will still face discrimination and encounter laws being put upon them. The causes
for illegal immigration include the hope for a better life, a safer environment, and the effort needed for
the process of naturalization. While an outcome is discrimination. One cause of illegal immigration is
the hope for a better life. The biggest reasons many illegal immigrants come to the U.S is because it
offers education, better jobs, and better health care. In the U.S the education is free where as in other
countries you may need to pay for school and supplies and a bunch of other stuff that are need for
school. Usually some schools will give out free supplies, that is until they run out. There are also
always some organizations and programs that offer to donate free school

Norman s Auditory Hallucination
Auditory hallucination is still regarded as a definitive symptom of psychosis. As schizophrenic sound
is sourceless and the patient is not able to pinpoint where the source emanate from, within or without.
For Foucault schizophrenic voices function in an impossible space, signifying the way in which the

[Schizophrenics] hear voices in mythical space . . . in which, axes of reference are fluid and mobile:
they hear next to them, around them, within them, the voices of persecutors, which at the same time,
they situate beyond the walls, beyond the city, beyond all frontiers (qtd in Erb 55). We can apply this

There are many scenes where Alison has different hair colors and looks, and at one point she even

and she says Sometimes I like pretending that I m somebody else, haven t you ever tried it? (King,
2010). When Alison says this to Hannah, she says it in a tone of voice that makes the audience believe
that Alison believed it was normal to take the place of another.
The social identity theory is a theory developed by Henry Tajfel, in which Tajfel believes that who we
are socially determines how many positive feelings we have towards ourselves. Basically, if we like
where we stand socially, then we will like who we are and display happiness. In this theory, Tajfel
labels the in group and the out group and says that we will always compare our in group to another s
out group. By comparing these groups, we develop a better personal view on ourselves (King, 2009).
A big factor of the social identity theory is that the groups will tend to critique the differences of the
groups, and overlook the similarities. A modern day example of the social identity theory would be
your everyday high school cheerleaders versus band members. The cheerleaders think of themselves
as the queen bees of the school,

Lyndon B Johnson s Speech To Overcome Summary
Lyndon B. Johnson s We Shall Overcome
During the 1960 s, America was divided over the voting rights of African
Americans, who had won their freedom from slavery a century before but had not yet gained the right
to vote. This was a time of racial discrimination, as well as a time of political unrest. In his speech, We
Shall Overcome, which was delivered to Congress on March 16, 1965, Johnson broke many
boundaries that had previously been set by his predecessors. His use of pathos, ethos and logos
attempted to persuade the Congress to pass a bill that would start to push for equality for every citizen
of the United States and alert the nation of the unethical segregation.
Johnson s goal of passing the Voting Rights Act through his speech We Shall Overcome was
especially effective due to his use use of pathos. Johnson s specific audience to which he is speaking is
members of Congress; however, he also speaks to the American public attempting to connect and get
their support. In his words to Congress, he is asking not only for the support of Congress in passing
this act but also for the support of the American public. When he mentions to all in the Nation tonight
, this shows that he also wants the support of all Americans. He hopes to show that he is not just
concerned about the legislative aspect of this civil rights issue but that he is also concerned with the
ethical and moral issues of the situation showing that this issue is about more than just a law.

The Death Penalty Should Be An Option
When presented with a heinous crime, the question of whether the death penalty should be an option
has often sparked heated debates between left wing liberals and right wing conservatives. Those on the
left would most likely argue that capital punishment does not serve any beneficial purpose in our
society. In contrast, conservatives, provided that they have no religious motives to oppose the death
penalty, would likely argue that it is a necessary punishment for heinous crimes. For thousands of
years the death penalty has been used as the ultimate form of punishment for a vast number of crimes
and in even more numerous methods. Babylon s King Hammurabi identified 25 different crimes that
justified the death penalty; the list did not however include murder. A popular form of punishment
during the colonial period in New England, over 222 crimes were punishable by death. These numbers
began to dwindle to zero once it was determined that capital punishment was inhumane by the British
government ( The history of capital punishment ). The movement to abolish the death penalty has
spread to many other countries around the world but has yet to have a widespread effect in the United
States. Still currently legal in the U.S. in 31 states, the death penalty remains as a reminder of mankind
s barbaric past (Facts about the Death Penalty). Considering how well humans have developed
intellectually and innovatively over the centuries, capital punishment seems like an awfully

Using Deep Structured Learning Or Deep Machine Learning Essay
INTRODUCTION
Deep Learning (or deep structured learning, or hierarchical learning or deep machine learning) is a
branch of Machine Learning which is based on a set of algorithms that attempts to model high level
abstractions in data by using a deep graph with multiple processing layers which are composed of
multiple non linear and linear transformations.
Applying Deep Learning to Building Automation Sensors
Sensors such as motion detectors, photocells, CO2 and smoke detectors are used primarily for energy
savings and safety, in building automation. However, next generation buildings are intended to be
significantly more intelligent, having the capability to analyze space utilization, monitor occupants
comfort, and thereby generate business intelligence. Building automation infrastructure that supports
such robust features, requires considerably richer information. Since the current sensing solutions are
limited in their ability to address this need, a new generation of smart sensors are required which
enhances the flexibility, reliability, granularity and accuracy of the data they provide.
Data Analytics at the Sensor Node
The latest era of Internet of Things (IoT), there arises an opportunity to introduce a new approach to
building automation that will decentralize the architecture and push the analytics processing to the
sensor unit instead of a central server or cloud. This is commonly referred to as fog computing, or
edge computing, and this approach provides real time

The Edict Of Hamurabi And The Code Of The Salian Franks
Civilization has continued to exist and grow because of the many institutions that exist within most
individual cultures, such as art, religion, ethics, etc. I believe that the most important factor in the
development of civilization and the biggest aid to the success of past societies is law. Law exists in
every society that we have seen throughout this semester, whether it be from the earliest examples of
written law like in The Code of Hamurabi, or in the most recent example we have seen in The Code of
the Salian Franks. I will seek to analyze the examples of important laws that we have seen throughout
developing society, and how they were integral to the growth of the civilization they were created in,
including: The Code of Hamurabi, The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Enacted in 313 A. D. by Constantine Augustus, this law was made and established to prevent the
persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire, and was a huge step forwards for society for a number
of reasons. Firstly, the law was a very early example of tolerance and acceptance of religious
practices. This law was put in place to bring peace, but more so than just peace it helped set a
precedent for future civil issues and how they could be solved. among other things which we saw
would be for the good of many, those regulations pertaining to the reverence of the Divinity ought
certainly to be made first, so that we might grant to the Christians and others full authority to observe
that religion which each preferred; whence any Divinity whatsoever in the seat of the heavens may be
propitious and kindly disposed to us and all who are placed under our rule (Edict of Milan, Page 1)
The second, and arguably most important advancement this law promoted was a turning point for the
development of civilization through the vast growth of Christians following the edict. While the
Roman Empire had once been a Polytheistic worshipping society, once Christians were granted the
right to free worship, we see a very large shift in the number of Christians compared to other forms of
religion within the empire. However, not only were Christians the majority in Rome, they quickly
became the dominating religion in the world, and because they became the biggest and most
influential religion in the world, their choices in early history are ingrained in our own society today.
We typically measure time in history by suffixing years with either BC or AD, which stand for Before
Christ and anno domini ; The latter being Latin for The year of our Lord . So through this law, we see
civilization not only getting its first taste of civil liberties, but also inadvertently affecting the way in
which we

Joan Of Arc Argument
Joan of Arc was a young woman who came from very humble roots, and eventually overcame these
roots through God in order to fight for war torn France. In Donald Spoto s, Joan: The Mysterious Life
of the Heretic Who Became a Saint, Joan is portrayed as having many visions from God telling her
what to do, and eventually following them which began to prove France wrong about women in battle.
After many victorious battles, she was captured, locked up in a cell and held for ransom until
Cauchon, who was trying to eliminate the king in power in France and gain the bishop position at
Rouen, bought Joan, and charged her for being a heretic. She was found guilty on these charges and
burned at the stake, all with unbroken faith. Joan s conviction ... Show more content on

These principles can most likely be seen present day through the Principles of Catholic Social
Teaching, which many who read about Joan of Arc would argue were nonexistent at this time due to
the atrocities that were committed against her this is wrong. The website for the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops states that, God reveals himself to us as one who is not alone, but
rather as one who is relational, one who is Trinity ( Catholic Social Teaching ). I believe this is where
the teachings relate to Joan because throughout her life, God is constantly showing her that she is not
alone by guiding her through each battle that she faces. Her story of everlasting faith promotes the
teachings and gives true backing to them that would otherwise be nonexistent. I believe that it is very
anachronistic to view modern social teachings and try to apply them to medieval times because society
and cultural norms were so different. To try to apply these teachings to medieval times would be like
giving Joan of Arc an iPhone and telling her to make a call, she would have no idea what those words
even meant or the context in which you used them, and the same is for the teachings. The ideas of
dignity and respect have changed so much over the years that medieval people would be very
surprised at the kinds of rights, and the ideas that religious society has today, especially considering
that not everyone today is religious. I believe these ideas would not even have really been introduced
to them, especially in such mass amounts of

Politics and power are significant in all societies, rich...
Politics and power are significant in all societies, rich or poor. In Prosperity and Violence, the Political
Economy of Development, Harvard academic Robert H. Bates gives insight on the relationship
between political order and economic growth. By analyzing the revolution of agrarian societies to
industrial societies, he argues that as these transitions occur, violence is often used to strengthen the
system of production.
In spite of Third World countries similar pre industrial history and early policies aimed at
industrializing, Third World countries have not had the same growth as most European countries.
Bates analyzes the process of development and concludes that this time period as an important
variable in a countries development. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though the monarch had to relinquish power to the people, it was in the monarchs advantage.
They led persuared them to buy into the monarchs desire for war and as a result the monarch received
more money from the people. Bates argues that some institutions in European states were forged by
war. The absence of this threat would prevent the new juridical states from developing parallel
institutions. In order to achieve prosperity, states require a shift from subsistence agriculture and kin
based mechanisms of enforcement to specialization within urban city centers. Rulers replace kin
networks as the source for the threat of violence, which was necessary to ensure security of person,
property and contracts. Bates states, Governments pursued policies that promoted the growth of the
economy and the rise of parliamentary institutions not because they wanted to but because they had to,
the better to secure the resources with which to fight (56). Rulers made themselves attractive to private
creditors and encouraged their subjects to invest in capital because they believe their investments were
safe. This resulted in economic growth and, therefore, tax revenue.
Another key argument Bates presents is the importance of investing to promote economic
development. Without a proficient state to control violence, people in societies will mainly focus on
consumption instead of investment. It is almost human nature to think

Essay on Asher Lev and The Window
Looking Beyond the Glass Could humiliation and pain come from something as simple as a glass in a
wooden frame? Throughout the novel, My Name Is Asher Lev by Chiam Potok, much of inner
characters are revealed through the symbol of the window. The mother, the father, and Asher all face
many struggles and the use of the window helps one to understand them. To begin with, the mother,
Rivkeh, is shown a great deal by the window. Potok writes, About an hour after supper, it began to
snow heavily. My mother and I stood at the living room window, watching for my father. I hate this,
my mother murmured, staring out the window (79 80). This expresses the worry that she has for her
husband, Aryeh, and his journey back home. For example, the ... Show more content on

The father s troubles are also shown through the symbol of the window. Aryeh spends a great deal of
time traveling for the Rebbe. In book one, He [goes] to the window and stood gazing out at the busy
parkway. He paced the floor. He [seems] caged. He saw me looking at him, I m not made for desks,
Asher. He rubbed the side of his face, I should be there, not here (26 27). This shows how the window
is a barrier for his father. Aryeh thinks that he should not be behind it, but instead, out helping people
and continuing to travel for the Rebbe. Also in book one, Potok writes, He stood looking through the
window at the street outside, quietly singing his father s melody... He held his hands to both sides of
his head. Standing there, with the room in shadows and his faintly illumined features reflected in the
window that looked out onto the dark street... (15). As well as a barrier, the window also serves as a
passage way to the master of the universe. To show the passage way again, Potok says, He was
standing in front of the window chanting softly from the Book of Psalms (26). For the father, the
window is ultimately a way out of the apartment into the religious world. Many of Asher s
characteristics are exposed through the window as well. When Asher is on the train with Jacob Kahn,
he sees his reflection in the window. He tells that, I spent the rest of the journey looking at my
reflection in that dark window of the

  • 2. The Victorian Er Collin s Challenging Traditional Gender... The Victorian Era: Collin s Challenging Traditional Gender Roles In 1868, British author Wilkie Collins wrote what is now famously known as one of the first full length detective stories, The Moonstone. Within this text, he explores and transcends his writing style, as he created an atmosphere full of suspense and gothic tradition by making use of two genres famous in the Victorian Era (Ayton, 2). As Collins managed to challenge the roles of men and women within The Moonstone, he ultimately attempts to reverse genders by creating a story of conflict, where the women are essentially in charge. As many gender stereotypes are expressed within The Moonstone through the different narrators of the novel, almost all of them become discredited as we are introduced to the other characters. By making use of the characters like Betteredge, Lady Verinder, and finally Rachel Verinder, Collins novel proves to break society s barrier of expected roles for men and women within the Victorian Era. During the Victorian period, men and women s roles became more sharply defined than at any time in history. This concept of roles, became extremely significant within Wilkie Collins The Moonstone (1868), as he incorporated the issues seen during that era, with the roles and expectations of the women in his novel. Because many of the women seen throughout Collins novel are more assertive than one would expect from a Victorian novelist, Collins shows women acting forcefully on their own, which ... This is because of the increase in the production of static electricity during the winter months due to the absence of moisture in the air as compared to the summer and monsoon seasons. With static electricity being omnipresent in our hair, clothes, and also on our doorknobs, it is no surprise that Atlanta electricians receive a large number of calls asking them for ways and means to eliminate static electricity. • 6. Critical Analysis Of Binsey Poplars By Gerard Manley... Right now, many forests are being relentlessly decimated in order to meet our needs. In the poem Binsey Poplars written by Gerard Manley Hopkins in 1879, the speaker considers this issue while lamenting over the destruction of a line of poplar trees. In this essay, I will argue that the poem shows mankind s own fragility through the felling of the trees because of the speaker s emphasis on the contrast between nature and its destruction and the way nature and humans are associated with the use of imagery and figurative language. I will first examine the poem s sorrowful tone and the way the text s content opposes nature s beauty and its deforestation caused by humans. The speaker uses this event to expand his view on the way mankind destroys nature without meaning to. In the second and third stanzas, we are actually blamed for this irreversible damage, as seen in O if we but knew what we do / When we delve or hew (9 10) and To mend her we end her (16). By using the first person plural pronoun, the speaker includes not only themselves, but also the reader, who is also a human being, and in a general sense, part of mankind. However, humans are not only the agent of destruction, but the object of it as well. For instance, the repetition of the letter l in All felled, felled, are all felled (3) may form a visual representation of a line of trees, or a line of people. Moreover, there is a personification of nature throughout the poem; according to the speaker, nature is a woman, as said in Since country is so tender / To touch, her being so slender (12 13) and To mend her we end her (17). Whereas there are some neutral correlations between human beings and the natural world, they are also linked through the pain and damage that is inflicted to them. • 7. Analysis Of George Orwell s Nineteen Eighty Four Fear is created not by the world around us, but in the mind, by what we think is going to happen (Elizabeth Gawain). In Nineteen Eighty Four, George Orwell locates his novel in a politically dystopian society. A dystopia is a bad place , being translated from the Greek words dis topos. This term was created to be seen as the opposite of a Utopia after the novel Utopia was written by Thomas More. Dystopian novels are written to daunt the reader of how future societies will turn out. The term has become more common in today s society and is translated into, a dark or unpleasant future. Nineteen Eighty Four shows that obtaining a perfect society is not possible without taking away the free will of citizens. Orwell wrote this novel in hopes to share his image of how future society may be. Orwell creates a totalitarian oligarchy committed to holding the position of power. This oligarchy creates an overall fear throughout the novel. There have been many twentieth century dystopian novels that have been written after Nineteen Eighty Four such as The Handmaid s Tale by Margaret Atwood, A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, and We by Zamyatin, Yevgeny translated by Gregory Zilboorg These novels came after Nineteen Eighty Four, Orwell created a base for these other dystopian novels. • 10. theme of alienation n no where man by kamala markandeya ANTIGONE KEY LITERARY ELEMENTS SETTING This tragedy is set against the background of the Oedipus legend. It illustrates how the curse on the House of Labdacus (who is the grandson of Cadmus, founder of Thebes, and the father of Laius, whose son is Oedipus) brought about the deaths of Oedipus and his wife mother, Jocasta, as well as the double fratricide of Eteocles and Polynices. Furthermore, Antigone dies after defying King Creon. The play is set in Thebes, a powerful city state north of Athens. CONFLICT Protagonist Antigone is the resolute and strong willed daughter of King Oedipus. She is determined to give her brother, Polynices, a decent burial. She consciously risks her life with this action, which violates both Creon s unjust decree, as well as the ancient custom of denying burial to enemies of the state. She obeys only the laws of the gods and the dictates of familial loyalty and social decency. Antagonist King Creon regards only the requirement of political expediency. Soon after the civil strife between Eteocles and Polynices ends in their deaths, he announces a decree denying Polynices burial. He is unrelenting in his stance, as he wants Thebans to know that he is a firm ruler. Thus he sentences his own niece, Antigone, to death for defying his law. Climax The climax of the play occurs during the encounter between Creon and Antigone. It is a scene marked by dramatic contrast. Here one can see the incompatibility between Creon s world of physical power (which he takes to be absolute) and the world of spiritual, idealistic strength which Antigone represents. The context of these references has majorly affected the way in which they are received and perceived by the wider public, expressly in times of social or political change and unrest. The context in which these images and sounds are being interpreted affect the response to racial vilification, representation, along with gender roles and stereotypes. Conventional practice in the entertainment industries has developed over time but drugs, their users and dealers, including the consumption and production, continue to be portrayed in a mainly negative light, showing the complexity of this particular social process. Context, being the time and place in which the medium is being produced, assumes a major responsibility in the portrayal of drugs themselves, the user, the dealer and the trafficker. Zinberg s (1984) description of drug use as drug, set and setting presents strongly in the notion of context. This is evident in the portrayal of a drug on screen as it becomes increasingly popular amongst the public. Social and political changes affect usage and its representation of drugs in a community and the wider world. The 1960s and 70s saw a hippie, anti establishment counterculture emerge and with this came an expansion of drug culture. A significant question posed is how and why did the Roman Republic and Empire develop in the ways they did and interact with the Persian and Greek/Hellenic Empires? At the height of the Roman Empire it spanned across western Europe, and encompassed the entire Mediterranean. Lasting and developing through thousands of years, the Romans encountered and interacted with the Persian and Greek/Hellenic Empires. This included trading, co existing, and going to war with one another. Although, originally the Roman Republic and Empire was first founded by the Etruscan people. Established in 753 BCE by a Etruscan colony on the River Tiber in Italy, the city was controlled by Etruscan Kings until 509 BCE. Whence the people rose up against the monarchy to establish the Roman Republic, and fought for control of central Italy for the next 30 years. This is a term that can be defined as stating the problem or what is trying to be solved by this particular project. There can be a lot of confusion in this stage of project planning, such as the misunderstanding of intent (Winning Project Management). A way to avoid such conflict is to maybe write out an agreement before the project showing that everyone understands exactly what is to be expected. The next step would be structure. Having decided the many specifications, it is time to figure out exactly what needs to be done and how to do it. There has to be some kind of framework built by the manager. Structure also links all of the tasks together instead of everything being done on individual basis. This creates a sense of unity among your project team. To move forward with the planning process, you need to transform the specifications into a complete set of tasks that are linked together. If the planning of a project becomes too complicated then that means that the tasks need to be broken down into even smaller ones. In Resurrection Gordie Kashpaw, June s husband, imagines June is resurrected like Jesus, and he hits her while driving. The troops mission was to defend the American airfield from the Viet Cong insurgents. However, their mission gradually extended to defensive patrolling and later on taking the offensive. As such, the number of US troops swelled to 184,300 by the end of the year and by1969, the number of American soldiers had swelled to 543,000. Correspondingly, opposition against the mission, which was previously minimal, rose magnanimously. In April 1967, a crowd of over 100,00 people marched from Central Park to the United Nations Buildings to ask for the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam. By this time, over 8,000 American troops had been lost in the war. Following the protests, six Vietnam Veterans, among those who had returned home formed the organization Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW). They wanted the government to bring their brothers back home. Authenticity of the VVAW The main arguments for the authenticity of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War was the idea that it empowered the individual as a change agent in the sense that the veteran soldiers spoke out to forewarn their fellow soldiers about the conditions of war. It also served to speak out for the hundreds of soldiers who were still on the mission to protect the nation from the harm that they had faced and to champion for the morality of the American soldier as idealized in their training. In the play Fences by August Wilson two main metaphors are redundant; most involving fences. Every character is shown having their own meaning and need for their metaphorical fences. Wilson wrote a play that would not only show deeper meaning than what is being said but one that showed a greater insight on the lives of a small family. The first character is Troy Maxon. Since the culture described in the novel is highly hedonistic, pleasure in terms of sex is crucial to Sal and his friends. Moreover, when he describes her breasts as straight and true it is implied that she looks the way a beautiful woman should. Likewise, his second girlfriend Lucille is introduced in the text as a beautiful Italian honey haired darling (On the Road 111). In the two quotations above, neither Terry nor Lucille receives a detailed description of their inner features; their beauty and sexual charisma seem enough. Undoubtedly, there is a recurring pattern in the narrator s characterization of women. The male gaze in On the Road is not only a matter of characterization and introduction of the characters in the text, but it is also a highly characteristic feature of the story itself as a pattern of action for the male characters. In quite a number of central events Dean and Sal are actively gazing at women in a highly objectifying way. Dean is on a constant look out for new acquaintances, and for Sal every city brings the possibility to see women that are exotic to him. When visiting Chicago the two friends hardly do any usual sight seeing, but instead they search for beautiful girls all over the city. The first night Dean exclaims as he is about to enter a bar: What a weird town wow, and that woman in that window up there, just looking down with her big breasts hanging from her nightgown, big wide eyes ( On The Road 224 225). Each bolus type resulted in a different Dmax when irradiated five separate times with two hundred monitor units (MU) with a field size of 10cm x 10cm (See Table 2). The solid water was the control variable in the experiment and the values that resulted from irradiation of the solid water compared to each bolus variable resulted in different values. The P value less than 0.01, from the Tukey HSD test, shows that the outcomes are not coincidental but that there is a numerical or scientific reason for the results of the experiment. The outcomes of the experiment show that there are significant differences between each bolus type. Exact bolus placement, calculating constant air pressure and room temperature, rounding errors, and human error are limitations that could skew the results of this experiment. The results are consistent with prior studies that indicate there are alternative bolus material options that are more effective than Superflab. According to the ratios to water in Table 1, investigators conclude that uncooked rice is the best alternative to Superflab due to the fact that it is more similar and consistent than Superflab to solid water when providing Dmax. The data infers that although using the alternative variables will suffice as bolus, the compositions of Superflab, green Play Doh, and orange Play Doh do not provide the maximum dose build up as well as uncooked rice. In conclusion, this experiment narrows the informational gap when researching bolus materials and provides an answer to the question of which bolus will be best to use in radiation ... So the third option is out of the picture. In any business, those who take risks can reap great rewards than those who are afraid to do so. The human population is well over 7 billion individuals and the presence of humanity is extended to all four corners of the globe. As a result of the large population, intellectual superiority, and the wide range of human existence, humanity has naturally transformed into a diverse populace. Consequently, cultural narratives are prominent in our daily lives and play a role in shaping our social interactions, opinions, and lifestyles. The influence of cultural narratives have only expanded with the growth in technology. Technology provides a platform for individuals to be connected with regions on the opposite side of the globe within seconds. This advancement has led to the widespread dispersion of cultural traditions and tendencies. This is evident in the news, social media, and other media platforms. Different cultures have developed different beliefs about what norms are and abide by those beliefs. If someone falls out of the lines of normality, most people immediately formulate an ethnocentric mindset and begin to create opinions that that person s culture is inferior to their own. The big reasons they migrated to the U.S was to work in the gold mines, build railroads, and work in agricultural jobs. Americans didn t like the idea of the Chinese taking all the labor. For that reason the Chinese were being discriminated and a law was passed. The law was known as the Chinese Exclusion Act, it restricted the Chinese from immigrating to the United States for 10 years. It also demanded for all Chinese flying into and out of the country to have a certificate that identified their status. The Act wasn t repealed till 1943. Of course later on and even today many other ethnics that migrated to the U.S will still face discrimination and encounter laws being put upon them. The causes for illegal immigration include the hope for a better life, a safer environment, and the effort needed for the process of naturalization. While an outcome is discrimination. One cause of illegal immigration is the hope for a better life. The biggest reasons many illegal immigrants come to the U.S is because it offers education, better jobs, and better health care. The social identity theory is a theory developed by Henry Tajfel, in which Tajfel believes that who we are socially determines how many positive feelings we have towards ourselves. Basically, if we like where we stand socially, then we will like who we are and display happiness. In this theory, Tajfel labels the in group and the out group and says that we will always compare our in group to another s out group. By comparing these groups, we develop a better personal view on ourselves (King, 2009). A big factor of the social identity theory is that the groups will tend to critique the differences of the groups, and overlook the similarities. • 37. Lyndon B Johnson s Speech To Overcome Summary Lyndon B. Johnson s We Shall Overcome During the 1960 s, America was divided over the voting rights of African Americans, who had won their freedom from slavery a century before but had not yet gained the right to vote. This was a time of racial discrimination, as well as a time of political unrest. In his speech, We Shall Overcome, which was delivered to Congress on March 16, 1965, Johnson broke many boundaries that had previously been set by his predecessors. His use of pathos, ethos and logos attempted to persuade the Congress to pass a bill that would start to push for equality for every citizen of the United States and alert the nation of the unethical segregation. Johnson s goal of passing the Voting Rights Act through his speech We Shall Overcome was especially effective due to his use use of pathos. Johnson s specific audience to which he is speaking is members of Congress; however, he also speaks to the American public attempting to connect and get their support. In his words to Congress, he is asking not only for the support of Congress in passing this act but also for the support of the American public. When he mentions to all in the Nation tonight , this shows that he also wants the support of all Americans. The Death Penalty Should Be An Option When presented with a heinous crime, the question of whether the death penalty should be an option has often sparked heated debates between left wing liberals and right wing conservatives. Those on the left would most likely argue that capital punishment does not serve any beneficial purpose in our society. In contrast, conservatives, provided that they have no religious motives to oppose the death penalty, would likely argue that it is a necessary punishment for heinous crimes. For thousands of years the death penalty has been used as the ultimate form of punishment for a vast number of crimes and in even more numerous methods. Babylon s King Hammurabi identified 25 different crimes that justified the death penalty; the list did not however include murder. A popular form of punishment during the colonial period in New England, over 222 crimes were punishable by death. These numbers began to dwindle to zero once it was determined that capital punishment was inhumane by the British government ( The history of capital punishment ). The movement to abolish the death penalty has spread to many other countries around the world but has yet to have a widespread effect in the United States. Applying Deep Learning to Building Automation Sensors Sensors such as motion detectors, photocells, CO2 and smoke detectors are used primarily for energy savings and safety, in building automation. However, next generation buildings are intended to be significantly more intelligent, having the capability to analyze space utilization, monitor occupants comfort, and thereby generate business intelligence. Building automation infrastructure that supports such robust features, requires considerably richer information. Since the current sensing solutions are limited in their ability to address this need, a new generation of smart sensors are required which enhances the flexibility, reliability, granularity and accuracy of the data they provide. Data Analytics at the Sensor Node The latest era of Internet of Things (IoT), there arises an opportunity to introduce a new approach to building automation that will decentralize the architecture and push the analytics processing to the sensor unit instead of a central server or cloud. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Enacted in 313 A. D. by Constantine Augustus, this law was made and established to prevent the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire, and was a huge step forwards for society for a number of reasons. Firstly, the law was a very early example of tolerance and acceptance of religious practices. This law was put in place to bring peace, but more so than just peace it helped set a precedent for future civil issues and how they could be solved. among other things which we saw would be for the good of many, those regulations pertaining to the reverence of the Divinity ought certainly to be made first, so that we might grant to the Christians and others full authority to observe that religion which each preferred; whence any Divinity whatsoever in the seat of the heavens may be propitious and kindly disposed to us and all who are placed under our rule (Edict of Milan, Page 1) The second, and arguably most important advancement this law promoted was a turning point for the development of civilization through the vast growth of Christians following the edict. While the Roman Empire had once been a Polytheistic worshipping society, once Christians were granted the right to free worship, we see a very large shift in the number of Christians compared to other forms of religion within the empire. However, not only were Christians the majority in Rome, they quickly became the dominating religion in the world, and because they became the biggest and most influential religion in the world, their choices in early history are ingrained in our own society today. We typically measure time in history by suffixing years with either BC or AD, which stand for Before Christ and anno domini ; The latter being Latin for The year of our Lord . The website for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops states that, God reveals himself to us as one who is not alone, but rather as one who is relational, one who is Trinity ( Catholic Social Teaching ). I believe this is where the teachings relate to Joan because throughout her life, God is constantly showing her that she is not alone by guiding her through each battle that she faces. Her story of everlasting faith promotes the teachings and gives true backing to them that would otherwise be nonexistent. I believe that it is very anachronistic to view modern social teachings and try to apply them to medieval times because society and cultural norms were so different. To try to apply these teachings to medieval times would be like giving Joan of Arc an iPhone and telling her to make a call, she would have no idea what those words even meant or the context in which you used them, and the same is for the teachings. In spite of Third World countries similar pre industrial history and early policies aimed at industrializing, Third World countries have not had the same growth as most European countries. Bates analyzes the process of development and concludes that this time period as an important variable in a countries development. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though the monarch had to relinquish power to the people, it was in the monarchs advantage. They led persuared them to buy into the monarchs desire for war and as a result the monarch received more money from the people. Bates argues that some institutions in European states were forged by war. The absence of this threat would prevent the new juridical states from developing parallel institutions. In order to achieve prosperity, states require a shift from subsistence agriculture and kin based mechanisms of enforcement to specialization within urban city centers. Rulers replace kin networks as the source for the threat of violence, which was necessary to ensure security of person, property and contracts. Bates states, Governments pursued policies that promoted the growth of the economy and the rise of parliamentary institutions not because they wanted to but because they had to, the better to secure the resources with which to fight (56). • 45. Essay on Asher Lev and The Window Looking Beyond the Glass Could humiliation and pain come from something as simple as a glass in a wooden frame? In book one, He [goes] to the window and stood gazing out at the busy parkway. He paced the floor. He [seems] caged. He saw me looking at him, I m not made for desks, Asher. He rubbed the side of his face, I should be there, not here (26 27). This shows how the window is a barrier for his father. Also in book one, Potok writes, He stood looking through the window at the street outside, quietly singing his father s melody... He held his hands to both sides of his head. Standing there, with the room in shadows and his faintly illumined features reflected in the window that looked out onto the dark street... (15). As well as a barrier, the window also serves as a passage way to the master of the universe. To show the passage way again, Potok says, He was standing in front of the window chanting softly from the Book of Psalms (26). For the father, the window is ultimately a way out of the apartment into the religious world. Many of Asher s characteristics are exposed through the window as well. When Asher is on the train with Jacob Kahn, he sees his reflection in the window. He tells that, I spent the rest of the journey looking at my reflection in that dark window of the ...
