This lesson plan teaches students about open and closed syllables over 45 minutes. The teacher will start with a warm up activity to introduce syllables. Then a PowerPoint presentation will be used to define open and closed syllables. Students will practice identifying and counting syllables in words using chips and mats. They will also complete worksheets independently. To conclude, students will clap out their first and last names while counting syllables, and see who has the most or fewest. An additional activity uses syllable cards to form words matching pictures.

Procedures:
Warm Up: Remind students that a syllable has one sound
or beat.
Ask them to put their hands under their chins as they say
pen and pencil. Lead them to count the number of times
their mouths moved.
Presentation:
Introduce the objectives of the session and the relevance to
their learning: “Knowing how to divide words into syllables will
help them read and spell.”
Introduce the types of syllables on ppt and invite students to
watch carefully to tell what closed and open syllables are.

2. Guided Practice:
Give students the counting mat and 5 chips. Say the words one
by one .Students repeat the word and segment it into
syllables, moving a chip into a box for each syllable.
Independent Practice:
Distribute worksheets 1 and 2 .Students practice dividing
words into syllables. Monitor students as they work.Provide
feedback.
Closure:
I will wrap the lesson up by having each student stand up and
clap their first and last name. While each student is doing
this, the others will count the number of beats. On the board,
I will write their first and last names, and the number of
beats with which the students came out. Last, we will see who
has the most and least beats in their name.
Additional Activity
1. Place the syllable cards face down in rows. Provide the
student with a student sheet.
2. The student selects two cards and reads them.
3. Determines if they make a word for one of the pictures on
the student sheet.
4. If a word is formed, places the cards aside and records the
word next to the picture.
5. Continues until the student sheet is completed.
