Bone mass peaks in young adulthood and then begins declining, especially in women after menopause, as bone resorption exceeds deposition. This loss of bone mass and increase in brittleness occurs more rapidly in women and with age, resulting in a higher risk of osteoporosis. By age 70, women have lost 30% of bone calcium compared to only 8% lost in men per decade. The loss of bone mass and strength contributes to fractures, deformity, and other issues in elderly individuals.
