 ‘ effective leadership putting first things first
 Effective management is discipline carrying it out
 Leadership is process of motivation other people to act in particular ways
in order to achieve specific goals.
 Leadership is a willingness to accept responsibility an ability to develop
three major skills that can be acquire through practice.
Leadership are scare because
 Leadership is a set of skills and traits that can be learned and worked on,
yet the general.
 Leaders come in guises
 Leaders may rise only in response to situation
 Leaders may be unwanted until needed
What is difference between leadership and a
manager?
Manager/Leader

Focus on present Looks towards the future
Prefers stability Appreciates changes
Focus on procedure Prefers simplify
Is happy in complexity Asks ‘why’ and ‘what’
Uses rational mind Trust issue
Asks ‘what’ and ‘how’ Takes social and environment contexts
Team work Engages vision
Transitioning from manager to leader
 The journey from manager to leader and leader to executive has 3 key
transitions
 Manager : from individual performer to managing team ‘what is good for
me and whats good for my team’
 Leader: from managing team to other teams of group ‘what is good for my
team and what is good for my organization

Leadership and management
 “managers are people who do things right and leaders are people who do
the right things.
Is leadership necessary
 1st task of leader : to be the trumpet that sounds clear sound
 2nd task of leader: to accept the leadership as responsibility rather than
rank or privilege.
 3rd task of leader: to earn trust
Types of leadership
 Situational leadership
 Transitional leadership
 Hierarchical leadership
Situational leadership
 The right person in right place at right moment
 Recognize the time and circumtances
Hierarchical leadership
 The right circumstances but wrong time
 Assumes leadership role because it is ‘their turn whether they want role
or not
Transitional leadership
 The right time but wrong circumstances.
 It may occur when leadership requires at certain moment but person who
is leader ids not capable of leadership
