Building A Team From Within My background Effective team strategies Characteristics of effective teams Characteristics of ineffective teams Leader: build your team Perform manager maintenance Team member considerations Things that worked A winning formula
My background Journalist since 1974 in high school, Willingboro, NJ Public Affairs/Public Relations & journalism, 35 years 24 years AF experience 7 years as a PR and Protocol chief on a DOD Joint Staff contract (Alion Science and Technology) 2+ years as a strategic communications analyst on a Navy contract (Booz Allen Hamilton) PhD candidate, Public Admin and Urban Policy, ODU Dissertation: social media and individual perceptions of performance
Effective team strategies Ideas or approaches I use when building teams Effective creation and growth requires collaboration Team building is so important because every player fills one of the roles – leader, manager, team member – at one time or another This is true whether someone is assigned that role or is in a problem solving or role-playing situation Build effective teams that see the path to the goal, understanding the journey, and fully commit to achieving that goal
Characteristics of effective teams Clear purpose, roles and work assignments Informal, participative, listening environment Civilized Disagreement Consensus Decisions Open Communication Shared Leadership External Relations Style Diversity Self-Assessment NOTE: “Team Players and Teamwork: The New Competitive Business Strategy” by Glenn M. Parker.
Characteristics of ineffective teams Difficult describing mission; what’s the goal? Great deal of participation but little accomplishment There is talk but not much communication Disagreements aired in private conversations after meeting Formal leader decides without involving other members Members are not open with each other because trust is low Confusion or disagreement about roles or work assignments Other organization members key to the team’s success do not cooperate Meetings are formal, stuffy or tense
Leader: build your team Create team understanding of the goal “Why are we together?” Stress effective communications in all directions Be a working member Hold everyone accountable
Manager: maintain operations Strive for consistency of action Stay focused on the goal Evaluate effectively based on well-defined goals and objectives Allow for creativity
Team member considerations Understand the agenda and your role Capitalize on your strengths to help the team Assume personal responsibility AND accountability Either all the way in or all the way out Support the team’s efforts Be the best team member you can be
Things that worked Open Discussion Share Significant Events Brainstorm Additional Solutions Be An Agile Thinker Be Ready To Take Action
A winning formula Define your purpose Set a measurable goal Establish roles and responsibilities Set timelines Ensure accountability Step back and check your work Finalize your action plan Follow up and get feedback Make course corrections if necessary
