Thrips are minute, soft-bodied insects with asymmetrical, rasping and sucking mouthparts formed from the labrum, labium, and basal segments of the maxillae. They have three stylets derived from two maxillae and the left mandible, with the right mandible absent. There are two suborders of thrips: Terebrantia, which have saw-like ovipositors and conical terminal abdominal segments in females, and Tubulifera, which have reduced or absent ovipositors and tubular last abdominal segments in both sexes. Thrips are polyphagous pests of many horticultural crops and some economically important pest
