UNIT 30 ā€“UK MEDIA PUBLISHING
IN Unit 30 I have learned an outcome of understanding print based products of the ā€˜The
Sunā€™ newspaper. I have been analysing previous Newspaper Double Page Spreads of
previous Sun papers. By looking at these I have realised how ā€˜The sunā€™ draw people in to
buying there newspaper, for example exaggerating events such as the Tragic
Hillsborough event, which gained them millions of buys, but this isnā€™t good in the long
term for ā€˜The sunā€™ as many people stopped buying their newspaper due to hatred FOR
EXAMPLE ā€˜LIVERPOOLā€™ fans will never buy that newspaper due to the sun blaming them
for the disasters instead of the police whose fault it was.

FORM AND STYLE
The denotations of the XXL magazine front
cover of 50 Cent is significant as It symbolizes
The whole of XXL magazine in one. For example
the lgo in the top left symbolizes to their
audience that this is their magazine. XXL
magazine is a very simplistic magazine article to
Q magazine because they are both very simple
magazine, also XXL and Q both have there
company logo on the top left of every
magazine. XXL magazine also uses the three
color rule which is equivalent to Q magazine as
they also use the three color, with the same
colors as Q magazine which could be symbolic.
Also the main image over lapping the logo
could be symbolic by 50 Cent being the ā€˜star
appeal 'of the whole of the XXL magazine.
FRONT COVER
The main image of 50
Cent conveys what he
is wearing and his
facial expression are
making him look angry
even know he has a lot
of popularity, maybe
he wants more.
The cover lines that
are found on the
top right of the
front cover article
convey all the
famous artists that
are found inside the
magazine article.
The main headline ā€˜50
centā€™ is significant as if
a customer seeā€™s the
main headline it will
attract them to buying
the magazine and
making them want to
read it.
The strapline
ā€˜its always
money, power
and respectā€™ is
symbolic as it is
what everyone
wants and
clearly 50 cent
has got it.
The barcode on the bottom
left is important as sometimes
they have social media links
which will take you to their
accounts e.g facebook
DECONSTRUCT A DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
Non verbal code ā€“ colour , white
and black can be seen as smart of
this double page spread article is
significant as the colors are black
and white which is the same color
of his suit which could anchor the
text and also symbolize that Rick
Ross is the king of hip hop.
main image It is a interesting
factor how the picture of Rick Ross
does take up half of the double
page spread. In the image it looks
like Rick is celebrating. I presume
that this is because he is the man
of the year in the hip hop industry,
this is indicated by him holding a
bottle of champagne and balloons
behind him. The size of Rick in the
image could also insinuate how
famous he is in the music industry
and he is celebrating this by
drinking champagne.
Drop capital at the start of the
article there is a drop capital which
is much larger then all of the other
letters, this could be because it is a
important article about him, this
creates a point of interest that
draws the readers eyes to the
article.
Page number At the bottom of the page of the double page spread,
the name of the photographer and the author of the article, this is to
make sure that they are credited in the magazine article.
The stand first ā€˜
man madeā€™ could
symbolize that Rick
Ross is a superior
person compared
to other people
due to his career in
hip hop, this is
significant as the
mast head draws
peoples eyes which
makes them want
to read the article
to see why it says
ā€˜Man madeā€™.
Also another convention that I will
repeat in my second magazine is the
barcode that I had to create for the
first magazine, but for my second I
can screenshot it and drag it over to
the second magazine that I am
creating.
Another
convention
that I will be
able to
repeat are
cover lines
which I can
just copy
Also another
convention that I
will be able to
copy over will be
the main image
which is a
medium close up
which I can just
copy over to my
second
magazine.
What I intend to ā€˜repeatā€™( Steve Neale 1980)
For my magazine article I am going to repeat the fact that they have a close
up of the main image and that the main image covers the logo which this
could further symbolize that the artist is taking over the magazine due to
their star appeal.
Also I will repeat the font of the magazine front cover for the XXL magazine
this is because the font is big and bold which stands out to the audience,
which could signify what the story inside the magazine will be about and
which will give away who it is about and what it is going to be about.
Also another convention that I will repeat in my second magazine is the
barcode that I had to create for the first magazine, but for my second I can
screenshot it and drag it over to the second magazine that I am creating.

MOOD BOARD- $TACKZ
MOOD BOARD CONCLUSION
I chose two nice cars which a are both
Lamborghinis, I chose this because these
cars are very expensive and top class
which therefore means the person who
owns them must have a lot of money so
therefore this will convey the artist on the
magazine.
These valentinos in the
picture are very
expensive shoes so
therefore this will also
convey the artist having
a lot of money which is
the competition in
rapping.
AUDIENCE THEORY HARTLEY
Age: my magazine will appeal to teenagers
because the genre of my magazine will attract them
want and come and read and find out information of
people who will be featuring in the magazine.
Gender: my magazine will usually refer to majority
of teenagers but most of them being boys at this is
the specific gender who listens to the rap genre.
Class: my magazine appeals mainly to teenagers so
this will be seen as the younger class from the age of
15- to around 21ā€˜star appealā€™ (Richard Dyer).
Ethnicity/Nationality: my magazine usually refers to
people who live in the United Kingdom and only gets
released in the uk so therefore it is targeted a people
who work and live in the Uk
AUDIENCE THEORY HARTLEY
Age: Q magazine appeals to young adults from 18-30 year olds
because the genre is hip hop and stereotypically refers to young
who like the genre of hip hop.
Gender: Q magazines usually refer to majority of males as the
percentage of male to female is 78% and female is 22%
Class: Q magazine appeals mainly to a working class audience
because of the price of the magazine such as some of the ā€˜star appealā€™
(Richard dyer).
Ethnicity/Nationality: British and American therefore the magazine is
mainly for white people.
MASLOWā€™S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS
ā€¢ Maslow's theory mentions 4 different potential outcomes for a
reader after reading a magazine these are; social climbers, care
givers, explorers and survivors. Social climbers is when the
audience are driven by improving their status in society. This is
important because it gives the audience confidence and a
drive to do well in life. Caregivers is when the audience
sympathies with the characters situation. This is important
because it gives the audience a chance to escape reality and
be engrossed into a magazine. Firstly there are social climbers
which is where the audience are driven by improving the status
in the hierarchy of needs in society, and caregivers is when the
audience gin sympathy for a characters situation. Furthermore,
explorers is where the audience are driven by social change in
a magazine. Also lastly, survivors is where the audience want
character to be safe as they have gained a bond with that
specific character. This is important because it gives the
audience a chance to escape reality and be engrossed into a
magazine. Survivors is when the audience members want
security and routine. This is important because they have
security knowing that the magazine will be published on a set
date.
AUDIENCE THEORIES
ā€¢ Uses and gratifications (Katz):This theory is about how people explore the media and in which way they do it,
When they do explore the media there must be reasons why. There are 4 different segments to the theory: Katzā€™
uses and gratifications. Firstly there is personal identification which Is when the audience can relate to a
character from an article. Also there is personal relationship where this is when the audience feels for a specific
character and gains a close bond with them and wants the to succeed in what ever they are doing; pernultimetly
there is inform and educate where the audience learns something from a article in this situation it is where they
learn something from the text about the article or what they are trying to achieve. And the last part of the uses
and gratifications theory is diversion which this is about the audience is able to escape from their reality in their
mind and gain a place in the text as if it is real and is happening in heir eyes.
ā€¢ According to Maslow the target readership would be survivors because they will like the security and routine of
knowing that the magazine will be produced monthly for their entertainment. Social climbers is when the
audience are driven by improving their status in society. This is important because it gives the audience
confidence and a drive to do well in life. XXLs target audience will fit in to the social climbers because they will
like to read about the top music artists, this will therefore improve their status in society.
TARGET AUDIENCE
ā€¢ The target audience of my magazine will be aged from around 16-25(Hartley)this is
due to teenagers and people in their early 20ā€™s are big fans of rap genre, this is
significant because the more people that like rap genre then the more people will be
purchase my magazine article due to the fact that they enjoy listening to rap music.
Therefore I am aiming my magazine article at people from 16-25. According to Katz
uses and gratifications the audience will be able to ā€˜personally identify themselves with
their ā€˜star appealā€™(Richard Dyer). They will also be able to ā€˜personally identifyā€™ stories in
the magazine from the artists where they talk about their hobbies and interests.
Furthermore the audience will be able to divert from everyday situations such as work
by reading the magazine that will entertain (Katz) them. The magazine will inform and
educate(Katz) the reader of new music information and will keep the reader updated.
ā€¢ According to Maslow the target readership would be survivors because they will like
the security and routine of knowing that the magazine will be produced monthly for
their entertainment. Social climbers is when the audience are driven by improving their
status in society. This is important because it gives the audience confidence and a drive
to do well in life. XXLs target audience will fit in to the social climbers because they will
like to read about the top music artists, this will therefore improve their status in
society.
TARGET AUDIENCE

ā€¢ Psychographics - the study and classification of people according
to their attitudes, aspirations, and other psychological criteria,
especially in market research. Psychographics is all about
stereotyping and what sort of people get put in to specific genre
category considering their personality, appearance, how they dress
and how they act. For example the consumers of Q magazine is
mainly men which can be seen by the Q reader where it is stated
that 68.3% of the consumers are all men and the other 31.7% are
women. Furthermore these men who are consumers of Q
magazine will be mainly people who enjoy rock music, so therefore
the majority of them could have long hair and like wearing black
colors which is because whilst listening to rock it is a dark and
chilling atmosphere which is why the color black is insinuated.

HOUSE STYLE AND COLOUR
SCHEME
Colour Scheme
My color scheme for $tackz magazine I prefer is Red, Black and grey. This is because I liked
look of Q magazines magazine which is the same colors and it looked very clean and smart
looking so I decided to do the same. My colour scheme for my RapCity magazine is going
be red, black and white. I chose white because this will furthermore keep my magazine
professional as this is a neutral colour, also the colour white contains an equal balance of all
the colors of the spectrum
Font Style
The font style I am using is Obelix pro for main headings and titles. This is because it goes
my rap theme and for people who donā€™t already know the magazine, when they first see it
will help them to tell what genre the magazine is, this is due to the fact that the font looks a
bit like graffiti but a neater version which could convey to the audience that my genre of my
magazine is rap. This font also looks very unique which is what I wanted on my magazine.
house styles will enhance my media product due to the fact that if I use more professional
front styles and a organized colour scheme this will benefit me by making my product look
better and look more professional in the terms that my product will look organized in the
TEST PHOTOGRAPHY
I had to take a few
images so I could see
what image would look
the best on the front
cover of my magazine,
Furthermore I think the
picture in the bottom
left will suit my
magazine the best.
This is the
picture that I
chose for my
double page

because I like
the fact that I
am looking
away from the
camera into the
distance.
TEST PHOTOGRAPHY CONTINUED
ā€¢ For my test photography I have had to do take some photos to give myself a variety
of photos to pick for my front cover. I have taken some photos of myself who I am the
artist for my front cover. I have decided to choose this photo because I think it is the
best photo of the 4 I have taken. A factor why the test photography can be seen as
good as it gives you a chance to see what the photos will look like.
SUMMARY OF IDEAS
Genre: the genre of my magazine is going to be hip hop/rap only. This is
because I want to have my target audience from the age of 16-to around
and most people in this age group do listen to this genre of music.
Colors: the colors that I will be using in my magazine will be red white and
black which will symbolize dark and a sinister lifestyle which will be good
a genre of rap and hip hop.
Target audience: the target audience of my magazine article will be 16-
25.This is because the majority of people at that age will be listening to
style of music this is significant as this will be my target audience as well.
Price of my magazine: The price of my magazine will be around Ā£3.50 this
is due to the fact that my inspiration XXL is around Ā£4.80 so my article will
have to be cheaper so it sales on the market
Size: The size of my magazine will be A4 so that I am not changing the
wheel and my magazine should sell as it is cheap and the same as any
magazine.

PRODUCTION PROCESS CONTINUED
ā€¢ Page layout- Normally there is a specially team that focus on the page layout for the magazine
which they call themselves layout staff. There job is to make sure that the page layout is perfect
for the whole magazine.
ā€¢ Proofreading- Now they will print out a hardcopy of the magazine and check if everything in
the magazine is correct, any mistakes that are found get corrected on a DTP file instantly and
then are corrected.
ā€¢ File emailed to printer- The whole magazine is sent to the printer and then printed of after
proofreading the magazine.
ā€¢ Distribution- This is the last stage in the whole of the production process of a magazine.
PRODUCTION PROCESS
ā€¢ Date of publication- When the magazine is finished and when the publisher wants it to be released to the general public. Then
they will need to produce a schedule about the production process and when each of the process will occur.
ā€¢ Managing the schedule-This is the most significant task there is in the production process of a magazine. If the publisher wants
there magazine to be published at the best standard possible then. The schedule should be made in a way of an action of
or supplying something for someone to use, just in case a accident occurred during the process then they can still meet the
ā€¢ Editorial and budgetary decision- the next step that occurs in the production process of a magazine is the content/editorial
decision. The editorial decisions is the topics that get decided in the next issue of the magazine. They talk about various contents
will be upcoming in the next magazine. After thinking about what articles or topics, stories on the news and photographs that will
used in the magazine. Then they look at the budget they have to spend on the overall production of the magazine process.
ā€¢ Content- Content needs to be decided inside the magazine and this is a very important step because without content they
wouldnā€™t of been able to publish the whole magazine in the first place. Content is therefore is very significant. Not only content but
photographs need to be decided for the content which the graphics are designed with a computer program.
ā€¢ Sub-editing- Sub editing focuses on one major thing which the quality control on the magazine as a whole. Quality control focus
focus on checking the accuracy of facts in the article, marking sure spelling, grammar and punctuation is accurate in the magazine
making sure that articles follow the house style.
ETHICAL ISSUES
ā€¢ Ethical Issue is a essential part of producing a magazine because if
there are ethical issues that are found in a magazine when it is
published, complaints could be sent to the publisher complaining
about a specific ethical issue that may harm the person reading the
magazine. When a publisher like ā€œBauer Mediaā€™ who produced ā€˜Qā€™s
magazines, companies have to follow rules to try and prevent any
people who have previously subscribed to ā€˜Qā€™ to be able to
complain to the publisher of the magazine. So therefore it is a
essential procedure to go through the magazine before it is
published checking that the magazine will not harm anyone in a
any sort of way. One of the rules that must be covered in the
procedure of producing a magazine will beā€™ particular care must be
taken to avoid causing offence on the grounds of race, religion,
sexual orientation, age and lastly gender. These are
significant factors that must be followed to make sure everyone in
the target audience doesnā€™t get offended whilst reading the
magazine.
LEGAL ISSUESā€¢ This link here describes how Bauer media wants free-lances
which is there employees and they want them to take away
their rights to be references in Bauer Media, therefore they will
need to sign a contract so they donā€™t need to reference anyone
which will mean this will take away their rights. Because of this
many righters and photographers have written to Bauer Media
stating that they will not work for them unless they take away
the new contract and they will carry on worming their again this
is essential for Bauer Media as they will have lost around 200
workers if they didnā€™t remove the contract.

ROYALTIES
ā€¢ A royalty is a payment made by one party, the licensee or
franchisee to another that owns a particular asset, the licensor
or franchisor for the right to ongoing use of that asset. The NLA
newspaper licensing company is where content from a specific
magazine has been copyrighted and if someone else in another
magazine uses this specific information then they will have to
pay the first publisher which is essential for them, as they
created it. Furthermore, the NLA make sure that each publisher
gets their royalties which in this case will be money. Q magazine
royalty will be Bauer Media which both will be subscribed to the
NLA.

IPSO- INDEPENDENT PRESS
STANDARDS ORGANIZATION
https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-
practice/
The independent press standards organizations(ipso) who
are an independent regulator who set out rules and
regulations that media companies are in competition with.
We hold newspapers and magazines to account for their
actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of
journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for
the press. They hold newspapers and magazines to account
for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high
standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of
expression for the press.
The ASA is a non-statutory organization and so cannot
interpret or enforce legislation. However, its code of
advertising practice broadly reflects legislation in many
instances.
IPSO EDITORS CODE OF PRACTISEā€¢ Privacy- This is when the editor has to be careful about what they are writing about someone and they
donā€™t expose any sensitive information. The code says that ā€˜Everyone is entitled to respect for his or her
private and family life, home, health and including digital communicationsā€™ so this means that if an editor
mentions any of this they can take action against them. For example with my magazine they cannot
any private confidential information about artists, because if I do this to a specific artist they could get my
company sacked due them publishing information on their magazine about that individual which this
then lead into a problem due to the fact that they havenā€™t got the rights to be doing this. The information
that the artist will not want to be sharing is personal information like their telephone number, where they
ect, this is due to the fact that this is their information that no body needs to know, and if any of this
information gets out there then this is when my company will be getting into trouble.
ā€¢ Harassment- This is when the editor or journalists cannot engage in any form of intimidation or
harassment. This includes not persist in asking questions, telephoning and if they are on someone's
and they are asked to leave they have to leave. For example, if one of my interviewers that are working
me was trying to interview someone that maybe famous, and has relevance to my magazine and maybe
didnā€™t want to allow the interview to go on and the interviewer was pressurizing the artist to do the
then the artist could get the interviewer in trouble for harassment torwards the artists which could
furthermore, bounce back to the company whom then will get the blame due to the interviewer working
my being one of my employees so I will be the one getting the blame. This could lead into on going fines
and even a reduction into publishing.
IPSO EDITORS CODE OF PRACTISE-
CONTINUED
ā€¢ The Code- the system of voluntary self-regulation to which they have made a binding
contractual commitment. It balances both the rights of the individual and the public's
to know.
ā€¢ Accuracy- This is when the media company has to make sure that what they are
publishing is accurate towards the IPSO guidelines. However if the company is inaccuracy
when this must be corrected or they have to write an apology. However the publisher
be sewed by the person they have accused if they have no evidence of what they say.
can relate to my magazine ā€˜STACK$ā€™ due to the fact then when the journalists are writing
the magazine they have to make sure that there work is 100% accurate, otherwise it will
furthermore, not look professional and if they do give false information about a artists as
such, then this could lead to them putting in complaints about the magazine for doing
Also if am employing people to work for me and I am paying them good money to do
then I want to make sure that all their work Is 100% accurate due to the fact that they are
getting payed for their work so they must be doing this to a high standard.

PRINTING COSTS OF THE
MAGAZINE
The final order To purchase 15,000 magazine copies at a good
quality it would add up to around Ā£4612.92 so roughly it will be
around Ā£3.50 each which I will be selling my magazine at around
Ā£4.00each so I wouldnā€™t be able to make as much as profit as I would
like to make so next time I will need to order more copies so that the
overall price will be reduced and therefore I will make more money in
total.
BUDGET SUMMARY
Source of income the main source of income
for my magazine will be the advertisements
due to the fact that it is very expensive to
advertise in magazine these days. I will use
the advertising rates for a reflection so this
will allow me to look at what I can charge
peoples businesses to feature in my magazine
as advertisements. This will overall increase
the readership of the magazine, because there
will be a certain amount of income coming in
due to the people who are getting advertised
in the magazine.
Advertising within the magazine- advertising
within the magazine can consist of a range of
adverts to attract different types of target
audiences, this is significant because within my
magazine have a large target audience so this
means that there will have to be a variety of
advertisements to attract different people.
Within the q magazines publishers, they have
found out that the majority of there target
audiences are male, so therefore this means
they may as well get advertisements that will
attract men than women because this will get
the business who is advertising more
customers. For my magazine I want to have an
equal amount of men and women reading my
magazine due to my target audience being
bigger, this is significant because I feel like if
you have a bigger target audience and specify
the magazine for both genders then will give
the magazine a chance of expanding through
the males and women, this will give the
magazine a better chance of expanding due to
PROFIT AND LOSS BREAKDOWN
ā€¢ Ā£4.00- price of one magazine
ā€¢ 15,000 magazine being published
ā€¢ Ā£4612.92 for 15,000 magazines
ā€¢ Ā£349,766.75 equipment
ā€¢ Ā£195,000 salaries
ā€¢ Ā£4.00 x15,000= 60,000
ā€¢ Ā£60,000- Ā£4612.92= Ā£55,387.07
ā€¢ Ā£55,387.07ā€“ Ā£195,000= ā€“139,612.93
FUTURE PLAN FOR MY MAGAZINE
ā€¢ My plan is in the next 3-5 years I will be able to triple my overall salary, which will allow
me to slowly build my business as a whole, by buying better and advanced equipment
which will allow my employees for my business to work quicker and more efficient due
to the better equipment ect that I will be buying.
ROUGH SKETCHES
Masthead- The masthead
will be in the top left of
the page which allows it to
be visible to the audience.
Strapline- The strapline
is placed under the main
image next to the main
headline as well.
Cover lines- my cover
lines will be placed on the
side of the page, so it
doesn't take away
attention from the main
image.
Main image- the main
image is placed in the
middle of the page, so it
is in the center and gains
the most attention that it
can.
Main headline- The main
headline will be found
under the main image
because this will
describe the main image
in a word or two.
Barcode and pricing- the
barcode and price will be in
the corner of the front
cover, this is essential as it
needs to be visible to scan.
ROUGH SKETCHES
Main headline- The main
headline will be found
under the main image
because this will
describe the main image
in a word or two.
Main image- the main
image is placed in the
middle of the page, so it is
in the center and gains the
most attention that it can.
Drop capital- will be
found in the top corner
of where the interview is
which will make the
page more appealing .
Stand first- the stand
first will be seen near the
headline so they can see
the introductory about
the story
At the bottom of every
page you will be able to
see the page number,
also there will be the
logo this is essential
because it is good to
advertise your logo and
make people familiar
with the logo.
FINAL SKETCHES
First of all, I would have the mast head at the top left corner of
the front cover, this is due to the fact that the masthead needs
to be highly visible to the audience that will be looking at it; it
being in the top left will be appealing to the audience with
bright colors ect, to try and attract them to want and buy the
magazine. Also I will have a quote so that the customers can see
that there is a quote relevant to the article. Furthermore I will
also have puff promotions and social media links which could
lead to more consumers. Also I will have cover lines down the
side of the front cover, this is because I donā€™t want to draw any
attention from the main image.
TEST PHOTOGRAPHY
ā€¢ For my test photography I took several different pictures in
different locations so that I could see which looked the best. Then I
will use this photo in Photoshop where I may add an edit before it
gets transferred in to my main double page spread or front cover.
Also test photography helped me to build up ideas of where I am
going to take my final picture as the previous photos where just a
practices to how well I looked in front of the camera etc.
Final photo for
my double page
spread after
being edited
with background
has been taken
out by using the
quick selection
tool.
HOUSE STYLE AND COLOR
SCHEMEColor Scheme
My color scheme for the magazine I prefer is Red, Black and White.
is because I liked the look of Q magazines magazine which is the same
colors and it looked very clean and smart looking so I decided to do
same.
Font Style
The font style I am using is Obelix pro for main headings and titles.
is because it goes with my rap theme and for people who donā€™t
know the magazine, when they first see it this will help them to tell
genre the magazine is, this is due to the fact that the font looks a bit
graffiti but a neater version which could convey to the audience that
genre of my magazine is rap.. This font also looks very unique which is
what I wanted on my magazine.
SETTING UP EQUIPMENT FOR MY
PHOTO SHOOT
ā€¢ Firstly, in my photo-shoot I used a specific
camera which was called the d3200 Nikon
DSLR camera, which is a top of the range
camera which specifically focus on getting
the best photographs as possible by using
a setting called autofocus , this camera is
worth roughly around Ā£230 where as the
tripod that I used to hold the camera cost
around Ā£20 this tripod was called a Velbon
DF-41 tripod. Lighting is no issue for this
camera with its advanced settings as you
can change the time of day on the camera
so therefore it will need more lighting gin
the night where as if the picture was taken
during the day.

Unit 30 l02 new

  • 1.
  • 2. UNIT 30 ā€“UK MEDIA PUBLISHING IN Unit 30 I have learned an outcome of understanding print based products of the ā€˜The Sunā€™ newspaper. I have been analysing previous Newspaper Double Page Spreads of previous Sun papers. By looking at these I have realised how ā€˜The sunā€™ draw people in to buying there newspaper, for example exaggerating events such as the Tragic Hillsborough event, which gained them millions of buys, but this isnā€™t good in the long term for ā€˜The sunā€™ as many people stopped buying their newspaper due to hatred FOR EXAMPLE ā€˜LIVERPOOLā€™ fans will never buy that newspaper due to the sun blaming them for the disasters instead of the police whose fault it was.
  • 4. FORM AND STYLE The denotations of the XXL magazine front cover of 50 Cent is significant as It symbolizes The whole of XXL magazine in one. For example the lgo in the top left symbolizes to their audience that this is their magazine. XXL magazine is a very simplistic magazine article to Q magazine because they are both very simple magazine, also XXL and Q both have there company logo on the top left of every magazine. XXL magazine also uses the three color rule which is equivalent to Q magazine as they also use the three color, with the same colors as Q magazine which could be symbolic. Also the main image over lapping the logo could be symbolic by 50 Cent being the ā€˜star appeal 'of the whole of the XXL magazine.
  • 5. FRONT COVER The main image of 50 Cent conveys what he is wearing and his facial expression are making him look angry even know he has a lot of popularity, maybe he wants more. The cover lines that are found on the top right of the front cover article convey all the famous artists that are found inside the magazine article. The main headline ā€˜50 centā€™ is significant as if a customer seeā€™s the main headline it will attract them to buying the magazine and making them want to read it. The strapline ā€˜its always money, power and respectā€™ is symbolic as it is what everyone wants and clearly 50 cent has got it. The barcode on the bottom left is important as sometimes they have social media links which will take you to their accounts e.g facebook
  • 6. DECONSTRUCT A DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD Non verbal code ā€“ colour , white and black can be seen as smart of this double page spread article is significant as the colors are black and white which is the same color of his suit which could anchor the text and also symbolize that Rick Ross is the king of hip hop. main image It is a interesting factor how the picture of Rick Ross does take up half of the double page spread. In the image it looks like Rick is celebrating. I presume that this is because he is the man of the year in the hip hop industry, this is indicated by him holding a bottle of champagne and balloons behind him. The size of Rick in the image could also insinuate how famous he is in the music industry and he is celebrating this by drinking champagne. Drop capital at the start of the article there is a drop capital which is much larger then all of the other letters, this could be because it is a important article about him, this creates a point of interest that draws the readers eyes to the article. Page number At the bottom of the page of the double page spread, the name of the photographer and the author of the article, this is to make sure that they are credited in the magazine article. The stand first ā€˜ man madeā€™ could symbolize that Rick Ross is a superior person compared to other people due to his career in hip hop, this is significant as the mast head draws peoples eyes which makes them want to read the article to see why it says ā€˜Man madeā€™.

Also another convention that I will repeat in my second magazine is the barcode that I had to create for the first magazine, but for my second I can screenshot it and drag it over to the second magazine that I am creating. Another convention that I will be able to repeat are cover lines which I can just copy Also another convention that I will be able to copy over will be the main image which is a medium close up which I can just copy over to my second magazine. What I intend to ā€˜repeatā€™( Steve Neale 1980)
  • 8. For my magazine article I am going to repeat the fact that they have a close up of the main image and that the main image covers the logo which this could further symbolize that the artist is taking over the magazine due to their star appeal. Also I will repeat the font of the magazine front cover for the XXL magazine this is because the font is big and bold which stands out to the audience, which could signify what the story inside the magazine will be about and which will give away who it is about and what it is going to be about. Also another convention that I will repeat in my second magazine is the barcode that I had to create for the first magazine, but for my second I can screenshot it and drag it over to the second magazine that I am creating. • 12. MOOD BOARD CONCLUSION I chose two nice cars which a are both Lamborghinis, I chose this because these cars are very expensive and top class which therefore means the person who owns them must have a lot of money so therefore this will convey the artist on the magazine. These valentinos in the picture are very expensive shoes so therefore this will also convey the artist having a lot of money which is the competition in rapping.

  • 15. MASLOWā€™S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS ā€¢ Maslow's theory mentions 4 different potential outcomes for a reader after reading a magazine these are; social climbers, care givers, explorers and survivors. Social climbers is when the audience are driven by improving their status in society. This is important because it gives the audience confidence and a drive to do well in life. Caregivers is when the audience sympathies with the characters situation. This is important because it gives the audience a chance to escape reality and be engrossed into a magazine. Firstly there are social climbers which is where the audience are driven by improving the status in the hierarchy of needs in society, and caregivers is when the audience gin sympathy for a characters situation. Furthermore, explorers is where the audience are driven by social change in a magazine. Also lastly, survivors is where the audience want character to be safe as they have gained a bond with that specific character. This is important because it gives the audience a chance to escape reality and be engrossed into a magazine. Survivors is when the audience members want security and routine. This is important because they have security knowing that the magazine will be published on a set date.
  • 16. AUDIENCE THEORIES ā€¢ Uses and gratifications (Katz):This theory is about how people explore the media and in which way they do it, When they do explore the media there must be reasons why. There are 4 different segments to the theory: Katzā€™ uses and gratifications. Firstly there is personal identification which Is when the audience can relate to a character from an article. Also there is personal relationship where this is when the audience feels for a specific character and gains a close bond with them and wants the to succeed in what ever they are doing; pernultimetly there is inform and educate where the audience learns something from a article in this situation it is where they learn something from the text about the article or what they are trying to achieve. And the last part of the uses and gratifications theory is diversion which this is about the audience is able to escape from their reality in their mind and gain a place in the text as if it is real and is happening in heir eyes. ā€¢ According to Maslow the target readership would be survivors because they will like the security and routine of knowing that the magazine will be produced monthly for their entertainment. Social climbers is when the audience are driven by improving their status in society. This is important because it gives the audience confidence and a drive to do well in life. XXLs target audience will fit in to the social climbers because they will like to read about the top music artists, this will therefore improve their status in society.
  • 17. TARGET AUDIENCE ā€¢ The target audience of my magazine will be aged from around 16-25(Hartley)this is due to teenagers and people in their early 20ā€™s are big fans of rap genre, this is significant because the more people that like rap genre then the more people will be purchase my magazine article due to the fact that they enjoy listening to rap music. Therefore I am aiming my magazine article at people from 16-25. According to Katz uses and gratifications the audience will be able to ā€˜personally identify themselves with their ā€˜star appealā€™(Richard Dyer). They will also be able to ā€˜personally identifyā€™ stories in the magazine from the artists where they talk about their hobbies and interests. Furthermore the audience will be able to divert from everyday situations such as work by reading the magazine that will entertain (Katz) them. The magazine will inform and educate(Katz) the reader of new music information and will keep the reader updated. ā€¢ According to Maslow the target readership would be survivors because they will like the security and routine of knowing that the magazine will be produced monthly for their entertainment. Social climbers is when the audience are driven by improving their status in society. This is important because it gives the audience confidence and a drive to do well in life. XXLs target audience will fit in to the social climbers because they will like to read about the top music artists, this will therefore improve their status in society.
  • 18. TARGET AUDIENCE CONTINUED ā€¢ Psychographics - the study and classification of people according to their attitudes, aspirations, and other psychological criteria, especially in market research. Psychographics is all about stereotyping and what sort of people get put in to specific genre category considering their personality, appearance, how they dress and how they act. For example the consumers of Q magazine is mainly men which can be seen by the Q reader where it is stated that 68.3% of the consumers are all men and the other 31.7% are women. Furthermore these men who are consumers of Q magazine will be mainly people who enjoy rock music, so therefore the majority of them could have long hair and like wearing black colors which is because whilst listening to rock it is a dark and chilling atmosphere which is why the color black is insinuated.

This is because I liked look of Q magazines magazine which is the same colors and it looked very clean and smart looking so I decided to do the same. My colour scheme for my RapCity magazine is going be red, black and white. I chose white because this will furthermore keep my magazine professional as this is a neutral colour, also the colour white contains an equal balance of all the colors of the spectrum Font Style The font style I am using is Obelix pro for main headings and titles. This is because it goes my rap theme and for people who donā€™t already know the magazine, when they first see it will help them to tell what genre the magazine is, this is due to the fact that the font looks a bit like graffiti but a neater version which could convey to the audience that my genre of my magazine is rap. This font also looks very unique which is what I wanted on my magazine. house styles will enhance my media product due to the fact that if I use more professional front styles and a organized colour scheme this will benefit me by making my product look better and look more professional in the terms that my product will look organized in the
  • 23. TEST PHOTOGRAPHY I had to take a few images so I could see what image would look the best on the front cover of my magazine, Furthermore I think the picture in the bottom left will suit my magazine the best. This is the picture that I chose for my double page spread, this is because I like the fact that I am looking away from the camera into the distance.
  • 24. TEST PHOTOGRAPHY CONTINUED ā€¢ For my test photography I have had to do take some photos to give myself a variety of photos to pick for my front cover. I have taken some photos of myself who I am the artist for my front cover. I have decided to choose this photo because I think it is the best photo of the 4 I have taken. A factor why the test photography can be seen as good as it gives you a chance to see what the photos will look like.
  • 25. SUMMARY OF IDEAS Genre: the genre of my magazine is going to be hip hop/rap only. This is because I want to have my target audience from the age of 16-to around and most people in this age group do listen to this genre of music. Colors: the colors that I will be using in my magazine will be red white and black which will symbolize dark and a sinister lifestyle which will be good a genre of rap and hip hop. Price of my magazine: The price of my magazine will be around Ā£3.50 this is due to the fact that my inspiration XXL is around Ā£4.80 so my article will have to be cheaper so it sales on the market Size: The size of my magazine will be A4 so that I am not changing the wheel and my magazine should sell as it is cheap and the same as any magazine. • 29. PRODUCTION PROCESS CONTINUED ā€¢ Page layout- Normally there is a specially team that focus on the page layout for the magazine which they call themselves layout staff. There job is to make sure that the page layout is perfect for the whole magazine. ā€¢ Proofreading- Now they will print out a hardcopy of the magazine and check if everything in the magazine is correct, any mistakes that are found get corrected on a DTP file instantly and then are corrected. ā€¢ File emailed to printer- The whole magazine is sent to the printer and then printed of after proofreading the magazine. ā€¢ Distribution- This is the last stage in the whole of the production process of a magazine.
  • 30. PRODUCTION PROCESS ā€¢ Date of publication- When the magazine is finished and when the publisher wants it to be released to the general public. Then they will need to produce a schedule about the production process and when each of the process will occur. ā€¢ Managing the schedule-This is the most significant task there is in the production process of a magazine. If the publisher wants there magazine to be published at the best standard possible then. The schedule should be made in a way of an action of or supplying something for someone to use, just in case a accident occurred during the process then they can still meet the ā€¢ Editorial and budgetary decision- the next step that occurs in the production process of a magazine is the content/editorial decision. The editorial decisions is the topics that get decided in the next issue of the magazine. They talk about various contents will be upcoming in the next magazine. After thinking about what articles or topics, stories on the news and photographs that will used in the magazine. Then they look at the budget they have to spend on the overall production of the magazine process. ā€¢ Content- Content needs to be decided inside the magazine and this is a very important step because without content they wouldnā€™t of been able to publish the whole magazine in the first place. Content is therefore is very significant. Not only content but photographs need to be decided for the content which the graphics are designed with a computer program. ā€¢ Sub-editing- Sub editing focuses on one major thing which the quality control on the magazine as a whole. Quality control focus focus on checking the accuracy of facts in the article, marking sure spelling, grammar and punctuation is accurate in the magazine making sure that articles follow the house style.
  • 31. ETHICAL ISSUES ā€¢ Ethical Issue is a essential part of producing a magazine because if there are ethical issues that are found in a magazine when it is published, complaints could be sent to the publisher complaining about a specific ethical issue that may harm the person reading the magazine. When a publisher like ā€œBauer Mediaā€™ who produced ā€˜Qā€™s magazines, companies have to follow rules to try and prevent any people who have previously subscribed to ā€˜Qā€™ to be able to complain to the publisher of the magazine. So therefore it is a essential procedure to go through the magazine before it is published checking that the magazine will not harm anyone in a any sort of way. One of the rules that must be covered in the procedure of producing a magazine will beā€™ particular care must be taken to avoid causing offence on the grounds of race, religion, sexual orientation, age and lastly gender. These are significant factors that must be followed to make sure everyone in the target audience doesnā€™t get offended whilst reading the magazine.
  • 32. LEGAL ISSUESā€¢ This link here describes how Bauer media wants free-lances which is there employees and they want them to take away their rights to be references in Bauer Media, therefore they will need to sign a contract so they donā€™t need to reference anyone which will mean this will take away their rights. Because of this many righters and photographers have written to Bauer Media stating that they will not work for them unless they take away the new contract and they will carry on worming their again this is essential for Bauer Media as they will have lost around 200 workers if they didnā€™t remove the contract. https://www.theguardian.com/media/2010/ apr/19/bauer-freelance-contracts-row
  • 33. ROYALTIES ā€¢ A royalty is a payment made by one party, the licensee or franchisee to another that owns a particular asset, the licensor or franchisor for the right to ongoing use of that asset. The NLA newspaper licensing company is where content from a specific magazine has been copyrighted and if someone else in another magazine uses this specific information then they will have to pay the first publisher which is essential for them, as they created it. Furthermore, the NLA make sure that each publisher gets their royalties which in this case will be money. Q magazine royalty will be Bauer Media which both will be subscribed to the NLA. ā€¢ http://www.dictionary.com/browse/royalty
  • 34. IPSO- INDEPENDENT PRESS STANDARDS ORGANIZATION https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of- practice/ The independent press standards organizations(ipso) who are an independent regulator who set out rules and regulations that media companies are in competition with. We hold newspapers and magazines to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press. They hold newspapers and magazines to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press. The ASA is a non-statutory organization and so cannot interpret or enforce legislation. However, its code of advertising practice broadly reflects legislation in many instances.
  • 35. IPSO EDITORS CODE OF PRACTISEā€¢ Privacy- This is when the editor has to be careful about what they are writing about someone and they donā€™t expose any sensitive information. The code says that ā€˜Everyone is entitled to respect for his or her private and family life, home, health and including digital communicationsā€™ so this means that if an editor mentions any of this they can take action against them. For example with my magazine they cannot any private confidential information about artists, because if I do this to a specific artist they could get my company sacked due them publishing information on their magazine about that individual which this then lead into a problem due to the fact that they havenā€™t got the rights to be doing this. The information that the artist will not want to be sharing is personal information like their telephone number, where they ect, this is due to the fact that this is their information that no body needs to know, and if any of this information gets out there then this is when my company will be getting into trouble. ā€¢ Harassment- This is when the editor or journalists cannot engage in any form of intimidation or harassment. This includes not persist in asking questions, telephoning and if they are on someone's and they are asked to leave they have to leave. For example, if one of my interviewers that are working me was trying to interview someone that maybe famous, and has relevance to my magazine and maybe didnā€™t want to allow the interview to go on and the interviewer was pressurizing the artist to do the then the artist could get the interviewer in trouble for harassment torwards the artists which could furthermore, bounce back to the company whom then will get the blame due to the interviewer working my being one of my employees so I will be the one getting the blame. This could lead into on going fines and even a reduction into publishing.
  • 36. IPSO EDITORS CODE OF PRACTISE- CONTINUED ā€¢ The Code- the system of voluntary self-regulation to which they have made a binding contractual commitment. It balances both the rights of the individual and the public's to know. ā€¢ Accuracy- This is when the media company has to make sure that what they are publishing is accurate towards the IPSO guidelines. However if the company is inaccuracy when this must be corrected or they have to write an apology. However the publisher be sewed by the person they have accused if they have no evidence of what they say. can relate to my magazine ā€˜STACK$ā€™ due to the fact then when the journalists are writing the magazine they have to make sure that there work is 100% accurate, otherwise it will furthermore, not look professional and if they do give false information about a artists as such, then this could lead to them putting in complaints about the magazine for doing Also if am employing people to work for me and I am paying them good money to do then I want to make sure that all their work Is 100% accurate due to the fact that they are getting payed for their work so they must be doing this to a high standard. ā€¢ https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/

  • 40. BUDGET SUMMARY Source of income the main source of income for my magazine will be the advertisements due to the fact that it is very expensive to advertise in magazine these days. I will use the advertising rates for a reflection so this will allow me to look at what I can charge peoples businesses to feature in my magazine as advertisements. This will overall increase the readership of the magazine, because there will be a certain amount of income coming in due to the people who are getting advertised in the magazine. Advertising within the magazine- advertising within the magazine can consist of a range of adverts to attract different types of target audiences, this is significant because within my magazine have a large target audience so this means that there will have to be a variety of advertisements to attract different people. Within the q magazines publishers, they have found out that the majority of there target audiences are male, so therefore this means they may as well get advertisements that will attract men than women because this will get the business who is advertising more customers. For my magazine I want to have an equal amount of men and women reading my magazine due to my target audience being bigger, this is significant because I feel like if you have a bigger target audience and specify the magazine for both genders then will give the magazine a chance of expanding through the males and women, this will give the magazine a better chance of expanding due to

Main headline- The main headline will be found under the main image because this will describe the main image in a word or two. • 45. FINAL SKETCHES First of all, I would have the mast head at the top left corner of the front cover, this is due to the fact that the masthead needs to be highly visible to the audience that will be looking at it; it being in the top left will be appealing to the audience with bright colors ect, to try and attract them to want and buy the magazine. Also I will have a quote so that the customers can see that there is a quote relevant to the article. Furthermore I will also have puff promotions and social media links which could lead to more consumers. Also I will have cover lines down the side of the front cover, this is because I donā€™t want to draw any attention from the main image.
  • 46. TEST PHOTOGRAPHY ā€¢ For my test photography I took several different pictures in different locations so that I could see which looked the best. Then I will use this photo in Photoshop where I may add an edit before it gets transferred in to my main double page spread or front cover. Also test photography helped me to build up ideas of where I am going to take my final picture as the previous photos where just a practices to how well I looked in front of the camera etc. Final photo for my double page spread after being edited with background has been taken out by using the quick selection tool.
  • 47. HOUSE STYLE AND COLOR SCHEMEColor Scheme My color scheme for the magazine I prefer is Red, Black and White. is because I liked the look of Q magazines magazine which is the same colors and it looked very clean and smart looking so I decided to do same. Font Style The font style I am using is Obelix pro for main headings and titles. is because it goes with my rap theme and for people who donā€™t know the magazine, when they first see it this will help them to tell genre the magazine is, this is due to the fact that the font looks a bit graffiti but a neater version which could convey to the audience that genre of my magazine is rap.. This font also looks very unique which is what I wanted on my magazine.
  • 48. SETTING UP EQUIPMENT FOR MY PHOTO SHOOT ā€¢ Firstly, in my photo-shoot I used a specific camera which was called the d3200 Nikon DSLR camera, which is a top of the range camera which specifically focus on getting the best photographs as possible by using a setting called autofocus , this camera is worth roughly around Ā£230 where as the tripod that I used to hold the camera cost around Ā£20 this tripod was called a Velbon DF-41 tripod. Lighting is no issue for this camera with its advanced settings as you can change the time of day on the camera so therefore it will need more lighting gin the night where as if the picture was taken during the day.
