This interconversion is explained by the fact that in dichromate solution, the
2
2 7Cr O 
ions are invariably in
equilibrium with
2
4CrO 
ions at pH = 4, i.e.,

On adding an alkali (i.e., increasing the pH of the solution), the H+ ions are used up and according to the law of
chemical equilibrium, the reaction proceeds in the forward direction producing yellow chromate solution. On the
other hand, when an acid is added (i.e., pH of solution is decreased), the concentration of H+ ions is increased and
the reaction proceeds in the backward direction producting an orange red dichromate solution.

The oxidation state of chromium in chromate and dichromate is same, i.e., + 6.
Further, Cr(V) undergoes disproportionation in acidic medium as follows:

6. Oxidising properties: It is a powerful oxidizing agent. In the presence of dilute sulphuric acid, one molecule of
potassium dichromate furnishes 3 atoms of available oxygen as indicated by the equation:

In other words,
2
2 7Cr O 
ion takes up electrons and hence acts as an oxidizing agent.
Thus,
2
2 7Cr O 
ions gains 6 electrons or in the above reaction, Cr (+ 6) is reduced to Cr (+ 3) so that total decrease
in oxidation state of
2
2 7Cr O 
ion is 6.

Uses. (i) In volumetric analysis, it is used as a primary standard for the estimation of Fe2+ (ferrous ions) and I
(iodides) in redox titrations.
Note. Na2Cr2O7 is not used in volumetric analysis because it is deliquescent
(ii) In industry, it is used.
(a) In chrome tanning in leather industry. (b) In the preparation of chrome alum K2SO4.Cr2(SO4)3. 24H2O and
other industrially important compounds such as Cr2O3, CrO3, CrO2Cl2, K2CrO4, CrCl3 etc. (c) In calico
printing and dyeing. (d) In photography and in hardening gelatin film.
(iii) In organic chemistry, it is used as an oxidizing agent.
Note: Both sodium and potassium dichromates are strong oxidizing agents. The sodium salt has a greater solubility in water
and is extensively used as an oxidizing agent in organic chemistry.
Structures of chromate and dichromate ions
In
2
4CrO 
ion, Cr is sp3 hybridised and all the Cr – O bonds are equivalent. In
2
2 7Cr O 
ion, the two Cr – O bonds which share
an oxygen atom at the common vertex of two tetrahedral units are longer than the other six equivalent Cr – O bonds.

It is important to know that both in
2 2
4 2 7CrO and Cr O 
ions, Cr (VI) has d0 configuration. Hence yellow colour of
2
4CrO 
and orange colour of
2
2 7Cr O 
are not due to d – d transition but due to charge transfer, i.e., momentary transfer of charge
from O – atom to metal thereby changing O2– ion moentarily to O– ion and reducing the oxidation state of Cr from + 6 to + 5.

Properties
1. Colour: Potassium permanganate exists as deep purple black prisms with a greenish luster which become dull in
air due to superficial reduction.
2. Solubility: It is moderately soluble in water at room temperature and it is more soluble in hot water.
3. Action of heat: When heated to 513 K, it readily decomposes giving oxygen

6. Oxidising property: Potassium permanganate is a powerful oxidizing agent. The actual course of reaction depends
on the use of the permanganate in (a) neutral (b) alkaline or (c) acidic solution.
(a) In neutral solution: Potassium permawnganate acts as a moderate oxidizing agent in neutral aqueous solution
because of the reaction:
4 2 22KMnO H O 2KOH 2MnO 3O   
or 4 2 2MnO 2H O 3e MnO 4OH  
   
Thus, 4MnO
ion gains 3 electrons. Also, according to the above equation, in neutral medium, from two moles of
permanganate, three oxygen atoms are available. In fact, during the course of reaction, the alkali generated
renders the medium alkaline even when we start neutral solutions. Hence, Eq. wt. of KMnO4 in neutral or weakly

From the different reactions discussed above, we find that when KMnO4 acts as an oxidizing agent, itself it is reduced to
2
4MnO 
or MnO2 or Mn2+. Representing the reductions by half-reactions, we have

In these reactions, we notice that H+ ion concentration plays an important part in influencing the reaction. The reduction
potential values can explain the occurrence of different reactions but the kinetics is affected by H+ ion concentration. At H+]
=1 M, permanganate should oxidize water
o
ox(E for H2O = – 1.23 V) but the reaction is extremely slow unless either Mn2+
ions are present or temperature is raised.
Uses:
(i) It is often used in volumetric analysis for the estimation of ferrous salts, oxalates, iodides and hydrogen peroxide.
However, it is not a primary standard because it is difficult to obtain it in the pure state and free from traces of
MnO2. It is, therefore, always first standardized with a standard solution of oxalic acid.
Remember that volumetric titrations involving KMnO4 are carried out only in presence of dilute H2SO4 but not in the
presence of HCl or HNO3. This is because oxygen produced from KMnO4 + dil. H2SO4 is used only for oxidizing the
reducing agent. Moreover, H2SO4 does not give any oxygen of its own to oxidize the reducing agent. In case HCl is
used, the oxygen produced from KMnO4 + HCl is partly used up to oxidize HCl to chlorine and in case HNO3 is used,
it itself acts as oxidizing agent and partly oxidizes the reducing agent.
(ii) It is used as a strong oxidizing agent in the laboratory as well as in industry. It is a favourite and effective oxidizing
agent used in organic synthesis. Alkaline potassium permanganate is used for testing unsaturation in organic
chemistry and is known as Baeyer’s reagent.
(iii) Potassium permanganate is also widely used as a disinfectant and germicide. A very dilute solution of
permanganate is used for washing wounds and gargling for mouth sore. It is also used for purifying water of
stinking wells.
(iv) Because of its strong oxidizing power, it is also used for bleaching of wool, cotton,
silk and other textile fibres and also for decolourization of oils.
Structure of permanganate ions: Manganese in 4MnO
undergoes sp3 hybridization and
hence four oxygen atoms are arranged tetrahedrally around manganese (figure).
Retain in Memory: As in the case of
2 2
4 2 7CrO and Cr O 
ions, Mn in 4MnO
is in + 7 state with d0 configuration. The
deep purple colour of KMnO4 is not due to d-d transition but due to charge transfer (from O to Mn) reducing the oxidation state
of Mn from + 7 to + 6 momentarily.

K2Cr2O7 & KMnO4

  • 1. K2Cr2O7 Properties 1. Colour and Melting point: If forms orange crystals which melt at 669 K. 2. Solubility: It is moderately soluble in cold water but feely soluble in hot water. 3. Action of heat: When heated to a white heat, it decomposes with the evolution of oxygen. 2 2 7 2 4 2 3 24K Cr O 4K CrO 2Cr O 3O   4. Action of alkalies: When an alkali is added to an orange red solution of dichromate, a yellow solution results due to the formation of chromate. 2 2 7 2 4 2 Pot. chromatePot. dichromate K Cr O 2KOH 2K CrO H O   or 2 2 2 7 4 2Cr O 2OH 2CrO H O      On acidifying, the colour again changes to orange red due to the reformation of dichromate. 2 4 2 4 2 2 7 2 4 22K CrO H SO K Cr O K SO H O    or 2 2 4 2 7 22CrO 2H Cr O H O      This interconversion is explained by the fact that in dichromate solution, the 2 2 7Cr O  ions are invariably in equilibrium with 2 4CrO  ions at pH = 4, i.e., pH 42 2 2 7 2 4 YellowOrange and (chromate)(dichromate) Cr O H O 2CrO 2H      On adding an alkali (i.e., increasing the pH of the solution), the H+ ions are used up and according to the law of chemical equilibrium, the reaction proceeds in the forward direction producing yellow chromate solution. On the other hand, when an acid is added (i.e., pH of solution is decreased), the concentration of H+ ions is increased and the reaction proceeds in the backward direction producting an orange red dichromate solution. Retain in Memory The oxidation state of chromium in chromate and dichromate is same, i.e., + 6. Further, Cr(V) undergoes disproportionation in acidic medium as follows: V VI III 3 2 3 4 4 22CrO 8H CrO Cr 4H O        5. Action of Concentrated Sulphuric Acid (a) In cold, red crystals of chromic anhydride (chromium trioxide) are formed. 2 2 7 2 4 3 4 2K Cr O 2H SO 2CrO 2KHSO H O    (b) On heating the mixture, oxygen is evolved. 2 2 7 2 4 2 4 2 4 3 2 22K Cr O 8H SO 2K SO 2Cr (SO ) 8H O 3O     6. Oxidising properties: It is a powerful oxidizing agent. In the presence of dilute sulphuric acid, one molecule of potassium dichromate furnishes 3 atoms of available oxygen as indicated by the equation: 2 2 2 4 2 4 2 4 3 2K Cr O 4H SO K SO Cr (SO ) 4H O 3O     or 2 3 2 7 2Cr O 14H 6e 2Cr 7H O        In other words, 2 2 7Cr O  ion takes up electrons and hence acts as an oxidizing agent. Thus, 2 2 7Cr O  ions gains 6 electrons or in the above reaction, Cr (+ 6) is reduced to Cr (+ 3) so that total decrease in oxidation state of 2 2 7Cr O  ion is 6.  2 2 7 Mol. wt. 294 Eq. wt. of K Cr O 49 6 6    It is on this account that it is used in titrations for which one sixth of the molecular weight of K2Cr2O7 dissolved in a litre of water would give one normal (1 N) solution (containing one gram equivalent of K2Cr2O7). (i) In volumetric analysis, it is used as a primary standard for the estimation of Fe2+ (ferrous ions) and I (iodides) in redox titrations. Note. Na2Cr2O7 is not used in volumetric analysis because it is deliquescent (ii) In industry, it is used. (a) In chrome tanning in leather industry. (b) In the preparation of chrome alum K2SO4.Cr2(SO4)3. 24H2O and other industrially important compounds such as Cr2O3, CrO3, CrO2Cl2, K2CrO4, CrCl3 etc. (c) In calico printing and dyeing. (d) In photography and in hardening gelatin film. (iii) In organic chemistry, it is used as an oxidizing agent. Note: Both sodium and potassium dichromates are strong oxidizing agents. The sodium salt has a greater solubility in water and is extensively used as an oxidizing agent in organic chemistry. Structures of chromate and dichromate ions In 2 4CrO  ion, Cr is sp3 hybridised and all the Cr – O bonds are equivalent. In 2 2 7Cr O  ion, the two Cr – O bonds which share an oxygen atom at the common vertex of two tetrahedral units are longer than the other six equivalent Cr – O bonds. Retain in Memory It is important to know that both in 2 2 4 2 7CrO and Cr O  ions, Cr (VI) has d0 configuration. Hence yellow colour of 2 4CrO  and orange colour of 2 2 7Cr O  are not due to d – d transition but due to charge transfer, i.e., momentary transfer of charge from O – atom to metal thereby changing O2– ion moentarily to O– ion and reducing the oxidation state of Cr from + 6 to + 5. The actual course of reaction depends on the use of the permanganate in (a) neutral (b) alkaline or (c) acidic solution. (a) In neutral solution: Potassium permawnganate acts as a moderate oxidizing agent in neutral aqueous solution because of the reaction: 4 2 22KMnO H O 2KOH 2MnO 3O    or 4 2 2MnO 2H O 3e MnO 4OH       Thus, 4MnO ion gains 3 electrons. Also, according to the above equation, in neutral medium, from two moles of permanganate, three oxygen atoms are available. In fact, during the course of reaction, the alkali generated renders the medium alkaline even when we start neutral solutions. Hence, Eq. wt. of KMnO4 in neutral or weakly alkaline medium Mol. wt. 158 52.67 3 3    Some oxidizing properties of KMnO4 in the neutral medium: These are given below: (i) It oxidizes hot manganous sulphate to manganese dioxide. 4 2 22KMnO H O 2KOH 2MnO 3O    4 2 2 2 43MnSO 3H O 3O 3MnO 3H SO    2 4 2 4 22KOH H SO K SO 2H O   4 4 2 2 4 2 4 22KMnO 3MnSO 2H O K SO 2H SO 5MnO     Presence of ZnSO4 or ZnO catalyses the oxidation. The reduction potential values can explain the occurrence of different reactions but the kinetics is affected by H+ ion concentration. At H+] =1 M, permanganate should oxidize water o ox(E for H2O = – 1.23 V) but the reaction is extremely slow unless either Mn2+ ions are present or temperature is raised. Uses: (i) It is often used in volumetric analysis for the estimation of ferrous salts, oxalates, iodides and hydrogen peroxide. However, it is not a primary standard because it is difficult to obtain it in the pure state and free from traces of MnO2. It is, therefore, always first standardized with a standard solution of oxalic acid. Remember that volumetric titrations involving KMnO4 are carried out only in presence of dilute H2SO4 but not in the presence of HCl or HNO3. This is because oxygen produced from KMnO4 + dil. H2SO4 is used only for oxidizing the reducing agent. Moreover, H2SO4 does not give any oxygen of its own to oxidize the reducing agent. In case HCl is used, the oxygen produced from KMnO4 + HCl is partly used up to oxidize HCl to chlorine and in case HNO3 is used, it itself acts as oxidizing agent and partly oxidizes the reducing agent. (ii) It is used as a strong oxidizing agent in the laboratory as well as in industry. It is a favourite and effective oxidizing agent used in organic synthesis. Alkaline potassium permanganate is used for testing unsaturation in organic chemistry and is known as Baeyer’s reagent. (iii) Potassium permanganate is also widely used as a disinfectant and germicide. A very dilute solution of permanganate is used for washing wounds and gargling for mouth sore. It is also used for purifying water of stinking wells. (iv) Because of its strong oxidizing power, it is also used for bleaching of wool, cotton, silk and other textile fibres and also for decolourization of oils. Structure of permanganate ions: Manganese in 4MnO undergoes sp3 hybridization and hence four oxygen atoms are arranged tetrahedrally around manganese (figure). Retain in Memory: As in the case of 2 2 4 2 7CrO and Cr O  ions, Mn in 4MnO is in + 7 state with d0 configuration. The deep purple colour of KMnO4 is not due to d-d transition but due to charge transfer (from O to Mn) reducing the oxidation state of Mn from + 7 to + 6 momentarily.
