In 1910 he made the decision to focus on his work as a
painter. himself to painting.
He just painted in a Cubist style, in those years it was
what was fashionable.
1906-1916
In 1906, to avoid the militia and to get to know artistic life, he moved to Paris
where he met Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger and Georges Braque. He lived in a
hostel, in the Montmartre for about ten years.
Portrait he made of his friend Picasso
The portrait of Pablo Picasso shows Picasso, 31, in a sitting position, holding
a palette. The composition, of earthy colors, shows a relatively symmetrical
and orderly figure, where you can see the features of the protagonist, typical
of the first epochs of Cubism, or Analytical Cubism. This is unlike later
stages, when his works are more chaotic and disorganized .
Distanced from Picasso
After a few years of close connection, Juan Gris and Picasso
distanced from each other, both artistically and personally.
In his early years in Paris he worked drawing for L'Assiette au
Beurre, founded by Samuel Schwarz, whose first issue appeared
on April 4, 1901.
Le Cri de Paris, which is a French political and satirical newspaper
where Juan gris also worked as an illustrator, and was founded by
Alexandre Natanson, disappeared in June 1940.

In 1912, he met Fernanda Herpin, called Josette, who would be the
woman with whom he would live until his death.
Juan Gris was the undisputed master of Synthetic
Cubism, a term coined by the artist himself. With
this painting he introduced the method into cubist
praxis; the shapes are imbricated following a
clear and regular structure. The flat character of
the painting coexists with the individualized
shading of some objects, and the color, which he
never abandoned, creates visual rhythms and
harmonies of undoubted elegance.
Master of Cubism
In his last years
Juan Gris deteriorates progressively, as he was suffering from
severe asthmatic crises, and severe attacks of uremia. Both his
friends and colleagues accompany him in this battle against his
disease, but he passes away at the age of 40,
In his last years
He died of tuberculosis on May 11, 1927, in Boulogne-sur-Seine
(France). He was buried on May 13, 1927 in the cemetery of
Boulogne-sur Seine (France). His son George, Pablo Picasso and
other artists attended the funeral. .
