José Gutiérrez-Solana was a Spanish painter born in 1886 in Madrid. He studied at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando between 1900-1904. He was known as "the painter of black Spain" and was influenced by tragic events in his childhood. During trips between 1909-1917 through parts of Spain, he sketched scenes from cemeteries, hospitals, and carnivals. Gutiérrez-Solana participated in social gatherings in Madrid and befriended other Spanish artists and writers. He exhibited his work in Paris in 1928 but it was not well received.
