From 1908 to 1916.

starts to observe the objects of his
workshop in an intellectual way and
painting them based on basic geometric
shapes. In this period he uses distorted
forms, representing the hideous and the
mythological.
SURREAL PERIOD
Between 1928 and 1932, Picasso joined the surreal
movement. From this period Bathers on the edge of
the sea and The dream stand out. Surrealists liked to
allow the brush to move freely on the paper with the
exclusive control of the unconscious mind. The
paintings were manifestations of the dreams and the
most honest feelings of the personalities of each artist.
EXPRESIONIST PERIOD
During the Spanish Civil War, Picasso was elected director
of the Museo del Prado in Madrid by the Republican
government. The bombings of the 26 of April in 1937 in
Guernica on the part of the German aviation marked
Picasso deeply. This event shocks the painter, who starts
painting a huge canvas which will become one of his best-
known works abroad. His works during these years are filled
with feelings of horror, pity and sadness. From this period
are Begging Woman and Woman Crying.
BLUE PERIOD• This period lasted around 3 years
(1901-1904). The name of this period comes from
the colour of his paintings. Its origin
comes from Carlos Casagem (his loyal
friend), who committed suicide on 17 of
February in 1901, an event which
left an intense pain on Picasso.
• In January 1903 he came back to Barcelona. In spring he started one
of his famous paintings titled Life , along with other canvasses during
The Blue Period.

imagination to represent the moral and physical decay of his
characters.
