How to Write A Proposition for Debate
4ºA/B
Proposition
• The paragraph that you will use in your first
speech (1AC for affirmative, 1NC for negative)
• Includes your reasons for being in favor or
against the resolution
• Important because it sets the tone for the rest
of the debate
PEEL Method
• The method you use to write your proposition
• PEEL

– Explanation
– Evidence

PEEL Method
Resolved:
Bachillerato should become obligatory.
Position:
Affirmative
Point (PEEL)
• The point is a topic sentence that introduces the
central argument to be made in the paragraph
• It summarizes the main argument and tells the
reader what will be discussed in the rest of the
paragraph
Point: Bachillerato is an essential
component of secondary education,
and students need the skills to succeed
in today’s economy.
Explanation (PEEL)
• The explanation is 2-3 sentences that explain the point in
more detail.
• The explanation clarifies and expands on all parts of the
topic sentence.
Explanation: It is difficult to obtain a job in
today’s world without specialization in math,
science, or humanities. Bachillerato provides
this specialization, and it also increases the
probability that students will go to university.
This can help students obtain a job, as those
who go to university are much more likely to
find employment than those who do not.
Evidence (PEEL)
• The evidence uses examples, statistics,
quotations, and references to support the
central argument
Evidence: As Nelson Mandela once said, “education
is the most powerful weapon we can use to change
the world.” A study from Universidad Complutense
de Madrid shows that students who graduate from
Bachillerato are 60% more likely to find a job than
students who stop attending school after 4ºESO.
Clearly, there are a lot of important skills and
information being learned in these two years that all
students need to benefit from.
Link (PEEL)
• The link connects the material of the
paragraph back to the original point.
• It helps us develop a conclusion about why we
should agree with the point.
Link: Given the benefits of finishing
Bachillerato and especially of attending
university, why not make Bachillerato
obligatory? Doing so would help students gain
more skills and knowledge while increasing
their probability of finding a job in the future.
