Maruja Mallo was a Spanish painter born in 1902 in Vivero, Spain. She had a romance with poet Rafael Alberti in 1925. In the 1930s, she had her first exhibition in Paris and taught in Spain. During the Spanish Civil War in 1936, she fled to Argentina. She returned to Spain in the 1960s. Maruja Mallo died in 1995 in Madrid and was known for her paintings including "Las uvas" and "La sorpresa del trigo."
