John Dewey (1859-1952) was an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer. He emphasized experiential learning and believed education should involve learning through hands-on activities rather than just lectures. Dewey opened an experimental school in Chicago in 1896 that used this approach, but it closed after a few years. His writings on topics like democracy, education, and experience greatly influenced 20th century thought and he advocated for schools to prepare students for life and teach them to be active learners and critical thinkers.
