Introduction
• Contemporary ‫(معاصر‬living or occurring at the
same time) philosophers, thinkers and educationists.
• “Father of American Education” as well as “The Greatest
Humanist of the 20th century”.
• He believed in progressive education , and rejected
authoritarian teaching method

The View of John Dewey
• John Dewey is probably most famous for his role in what
is called progressive education.
• Progressive education is essentially a view of education
that emphasizes the need to learn by doing.
• Dewey believed that human beings learn through a
'hands-on' approach. This places Dewey in the
educational philosophy of pragmatism.
• Pragmatists believe that reality must be experienced.
• Dewey's educational point of view, this means that
students must interact with their environment in order to
adapt and learn.
• Dewey felt the same idea was true for teachers and that
teachers and students must learn together.

Considered the 'Modern Father of
Experiential Education,' Dewey's philosophy of learning
through experience went against traditional and
focused on Experiential education, encouraging
educators to provide quality educational experiences
that would influence students' future decisions.
Dewey's Philosophy:-
1/8/2020 1 8
Beliefs
Dewey had a high ethical‫اخالقی‬ value of democracy
. Democratic Values — Liberty, Equality, Justice. ... Democratic values support
the belief that an orderly society can exist in which freedom is preserved.
His main philosophy is Instrumentalism.a pragmatic philosophical
approach which regards an activity (such as science, law, or education) chiefly as
an instrument or tool for some practical purpose, rather than in more absolute
or ideal terms.
He believed that learning was active .
Believed that school was too long , and children
should learn through real-life task and challenges

Progressive education
• Progressive education is a response to
traditional methods of teaching. It is defined
as an educational movement which gives
more value to experience than
formal learning. It is based more on
experiential learning that concentrate on the
development of a child's talents.
1/8/2020 1 10
The teacher need to have structure, so that the
learner can be in a positive environment, where
they will get the most out of what they’ve been
taught.
children were encouraged towards
Experiential learning and independent, critical
thinking.
 Dewey's education philosophy helped forward the
"progressive education" movement, and spawned
the development of "experiential education"
programs and experiments.

Difference between Progressive and
Traditional Education
• Students learn mostly through experiences,
collaboration, and play. Basically, the
main difference between the two lies in where
student learning is centered.
• Traditional schools focus on the teacher and
what they teach while progressive schools focus
on the students and how they can learn.

Formal vs Progressive Teaching
1/8/2020 1 13
• Dewey classifies "experience" as that which we
think and act upon and perceive through our
senses, sort of like the carrying out of an
experiment, and the mental act of reasoning
about its outcomes.
• Experiential learning involves learning from
experience the process whereby knowledge is
created through the transformation of
experience.
Experiential Learning

Theory of experience
According to Dewey, powerful
educational experiences are a result
of two fundamental principles:
continuity and interaction.
Continuity
 Continuity refers to
how experiences, both past and
present, influence the future.
Learn for every experience positive
or negative.
 Each experience is stored and
carried on into the feature
Interaction
 Interaction refers to how
one's current situation
influences their experiences.
 If teacher have a positive
interaction with the learner.
 Enables them to have
quality education.

Dewey's Aims of Education
According to Dewey there are four aims of education. They are
as follows:
• Education is a Process of Growth
• Education is Life and Life is Education
• Education Leads towards Social Efficiency
• Experience is the basis of his Philosophy

21st Century Education
• The Three Cs of 21st Century Education. ...
The common theme emerging from well-
known educational leaders, decision makers,
universities and governments was
• Creative thinking,
• Collaboration and
• Communication.
John Dewey: ‘We must prepare our students…for their world.’
1/8/2020 1 18
Student-Centered Learning:-
• Student-centered learning, also known
as learner-centered education, broadly
encompasses methods of teaching that shift
the focus of instruction from the teacher to
the student. ... Student-centered learning
puts students' interests first,
acknowledging student voice as central to the
learning experience.
• Which is the need of 21st century education.

Today’s Development
 In today’s school and education, Dewey’s system of beliefs
can be shown through:
 Kindergarten's, Montessori schools
 Different learning styles, such as hand on -activates

Advantage
• Dewey is one of our main influences. The
advantage is that
• The children are very invested in their
learning and
• work cooperatively,
• Become independent and feel they are heard
and have a voice
