1. Magazine Front Cover Analysis
Masthead-the masthead of this magazine front cover is clearly a well known icon as is shown by its back grounded setting. The audience will understand that the bold, red font is that of EMPIRE so the lack of the ‘P’ in visibility is none affecting. The positioning complies with conventions so the audience can expect to view the name of the magazine easily without hassle. Finally the contrasting colour of the masthead is striking compared to the dark blue and black background.
Main Image-the only image on this cover is of ‘wolverine’ which appeals to dedicated film viewers as the release of the new X-men film is widely awaited. The positioning of the image clearly draws attention to the rest of the text whilst still seeming in the foreground to attract sole attention. The image overlaps the surrounding text slightly to show its power which is a metaphor for the power we pragmatically understand ‘wolverine’ has.
Conventions- the conventions we understand of film magazine front covers, show that the image should be predominant with text behind and a masthead at the top of the page, accompanied with a tag line. The majority of conventions are stuck to, but the colouring of the front cover is seen to break conventions, usually colours used on front covers are bright and attractive, but the dark and dull colours show the appeal with dedicated viewers, the image isn’t outstanding but depends on understanding of the actor.
Use Of Colour- as I have said the use of colour within this magazine shows the dark side to ‘wolverine’ but also shows the creative spark of EMPIRE, the contrasting red with blue shows the appeal to readers and viewers, this magazine cover should aim to be seen on a shelf of magazines, I feel it would be.
Hierarchy Of Text- clearly obeying with conventions this magazine begins with a tag line of the magazine, “wolverine has returned for…”. This shows the intentions of the main story, below this is the masthead, EMPIRE to show dedicated readers what they will be expecting. In very small text underneath the masthead is a slogan of EMPIRE, “the world’s biggest movie magazine”. This appeals to the audience and shows the ambitions and beliefs of the magazine. Finally is the main body of text, a selection of different sizes of text which appear with the importance of text.
