2. Empire
Masthead
This is the biggest form of text
on the cover. The colour of the
font is also very bright enabling
it to stand out from the rest of
the magazine as it is gold. The
colour gold has the
connotations of money, wealth,
rich, superior and many more.
Many could argue that the
masthead being this colour
reflects the image as he looks
like he conforms to the
connotations, for example., the
clean black suit but also the gun
which both highlight superiority,
wealth and authority.
Image
The image of the main
character is a mid-body shot
allowing the audience to see the
top half of his suit. As said
before, the suit suggests
superiority. However, by the suit
being black, it gives the
impression that the character
may have a dark side to him,
but also, pure within the inside
as he has a white shirt on
underneath. Also, the character
is holding a gun and isn't
looking at the camera which
may give the impression that he
is looking at his opponent and
ready to aim at him, hence the
Target audience
This magazine front cover looks as if it targeted at an older generation. I say this
due to the simplistic colour and imaging. Also, those who watch action films may
read this edition to find out more about the film and see whether it would interest
Headline
Overall, the magazine is very minimalistic which could be viewed as an
advantage as it enables the headline Skyfall to stand out although it is
rather small.
Strapline
There is no strapline under the
headline apart from text that
reads Limited Edition. This
therefore tells the audience
that this may be a one-off edit
but also, may explain why the
front cover is so minimalistic.
Colour
The lack of colour highlights
the fact that this is a limited
edition issue. However, the
lack of colour enables the
masthead to stand out.
Reflection
This specific Empire magazine
has widened my knowledge in
understanding that not every
magazine has to have a lot
going on at once. On the other
hand, I understand that this
minimalistic stlye is only
usually done on very
successful films meaning my
film must be successful in
order to conform to this
simplistic sense of style.
3. Total Film
Masthead
The masthead is the only white
text that is bold. This enable the
audience to see what the
magazine is called and be
familiar with what they are
reading. In addition, the word film
is written on the top of the F in
film. This also allows the
masthead to stand out from all of
the other text on the cover.
Image
The full body picture of Daniel
Craig highlights his status and
power within the film, especially
the mise-en-scene with the gun
and suit. The direct eye-contact
also allows the audience to feel as
if Daniel Craig is looking at him
directly and internally. The clean
suit may suggest purity as well as
superiority. However, the suit is
buttoned closed, this may be due
to the belief that he may need to
reveal something to others.
Target Audience
This magazine cover looks as if it
is targeted at the older generation.
I say this due to the colours and
simple image of Daniel Craig. The
image gives the impression that
what one sees is what they get.
Colours such as red and gold are
also viewed as rich and mature.
Headline
The headline Skyfall is the
second most biggest font on the
cover. It is also gold, this then
grabs the audiences attention,
especially as it is placed on top
of the main image.
Strapline
Bond gets his swagger back
suggests that he lost his looks/ the
way he used to dress. This then
allows the audience to question
why or how this happened,
making them more prone in
wanting to watch Skyfall.Colours
Colours such as grey, black, gold
and red are all viewed as mature
colours. Also, the black
background allows the masthead
to stand out.
Reflection
When comparing this magazine
to Empire, there is a major
difference, in terms of the
amount of sale lines, pictures
and the angle of the picture. I
then noticed that magazines
don’t always have to look exactly
like one another. This will help
when constructing my own
magazine as I will be able to
take elements from different
magazines which will form my
4. Sight & SoundMasthead
This masthead is different
from the other two
mastheads. This masthead is
very simple in a banner
format. It also doesn’t go
across the whole page like
the other magazines. This
may be what makes this
magazine stand out from
others being sold.
Image
The image is a close up of a
man who isn't looking directly
at the camera. The lack of
eye contact may suggests
that this actor may gain
sympathy from the audience
or may be hiding something
from others.
Target audience
I would suggest the target
audience to be over 25s as
this magazine comes across
very mature and informative,
rather than entertaining like
Empire and Total Film.
Headline
The headline is at the
bottom of the magazine and
the last word is Shame in
capitals. This may be linked
with the image, which will
explain why the male isn't
looking directly at the
camera as he may feel
ashamed.
Strapline
There isn't a strapline for
this headline. This may be
because the headline is so
detailed, or maybe because
the writer did not want to
reveal everything without the
audience reading the story.
Colour
Overall, this magazine
cover is very dark.
However, the yellow and
elements of white brings a
hint of brightness to the
cover.
Reflection
After analyzing all three magazines, I have established that not every magazine front cover needs to be
structured in the same format. This format is very simplistic, this is different from Empires simplistic format as
theirs was a limited edition magazine, whereas, this is how Sight and Sound magazines look like every time they
