Gone are the days of masculinity being a mountain man or a cutthroat businessman,
society is no longer the 1800s or an episode of MadMen. Currently, some of society s
expectations of masculinity (as defined by experts) are a desire to win, need for
emotional control, dominance (including that over women), violence, sexual
promiscuity, and a pursuit of status. However masculinitycan also be something that
is positive. Like a steady rock to build emotional support upon, a stoic person can be
an excellent resource. This can be like the person that hides their emotion in order to
better others that need a push forward when their emotions get the better of them.
This is where masculine ideals can be a double edged sword because these traits can
be beneficial in some manners but it can also have some detriments that occur
consequently. It is not that men are not masculine; it is that masculinity does not
represent men anymore. Because of the negative side effects of men exhibiting
masculine traits they should no longer be expected to adhere to all of these
traditional ideals.
The traits that are normally associated with masculinity are ones that can be
detrimental to the mental health of the people who have these traits. For example
in an analysis of seventy eight different studies, researchers at the University of
Indiana Bloomington found that men who exhibited masculine traits were more
likely to have mental health issues such as depression. The same men were also
less likely to seek help when it came to their mental health issues. The traits that
were most commonly associated with the negative mental health were being self
reliant, sexual promiscuity, and having dominance or power over women.
Expecting someone to be stoic and only depending on themselves means they will
be less likely to go and seek psychological help as they would feel that they need to
be able to solve their problems themselves. This societal pressure upon men to be

A satire is a writing technique used to point out and criticize social issues, usually
through humorous forms. In the short story The Devil in Tom Walker , author
Washington Irving addresses many social topics. He creates his story using the
satire technique. Throughout the story Irving addresses these issues in various
forms and ways. Three large social ideas that Irving criticises are organized
religion, white establishment , and marriage. Through each issue his viewpoints
are able to be seen. Irving expresses his views through the characters on organized
religion and religious types. He remarks to deacon Peabody and says on page 21 if
he does not look more to his own sins and less to those of his neighbors and then
refers to the tree that represents the deacon and calls it a flourishing tree but rotten
to the core on the inside. This is representing the fake face put on by the highest of
religious officials and in a sense, claiming it to be a fraud. He also refers to the

geographical cultures. It is not as common to hear the lack of diversity towards the
blind community but it exists. The attendance of Texas State University has opened

b.Analysis: Opioids are a class of drug that are medically used as very effective
painkillers, like fentanyl and morphine, however, they are highly addictive and
produce a feeling of euphoria ( Opioids ). This combination leads do a lot of abuse
and dependency, where people take more than prescribed in order to feel better.
People start off taking the opioid painkillers in order to not feel pain as prescribed
by their doctors. Then, they end up getting addicted to them. There are also illicit
opioids, such as heroin, that are also highly addictive and also lead to dependency
and death ( Opioids ). These illicit versions are taken for recreational reasons, and are
also often mixed with other drugs. The combination of taking an unregulated drug in
conjunction with other drugs leads to a lot of overdoses.

location is between India and China. It is in both the northern and eastern

east. Nepal is only boarded by India and China and is completed landlocked; no
coastline.
Because it is located between India and China, the majority of the population is
Indian and Chinese. Nepal has a population of around thirty one million, which is

The topography on half of the county is hills and plains and the other half is

United States seemed to be overflowing, and others still tell of their predecessors
leaving for personal reasons, perhaps to find a family member who had left years
before. For those who had fled their home countries out of fear or necessity, America
was often the obvious choice for the individual or family for relocation. The nation
has long been known as the land of opportunity , and letters sent by individuals who
had emigrated without their entire families have confirmed this title numerous times.
This was the case for my great grandfather in particular, who might not have come to
America had it not been for the letters he received from his sister who had moved to
the United States and written back to her family in Italy. After fleeing from poor
conditions in Italy, my ancestors were presented with both opportunities and
challenges which they may never have experienced had they not chosen to immigrate
to the United States of America, and their stories play an important role in the
definition of American culture.
During the late nineteenth century, economic crises and corrupt, unstable

From Churchill to Hitler to the former Soviet Union, it is quite clear that radio,
television and newspapers have the power to change and make history. A clear
example of the power of the media was when Orson Welles? made his famous radio
broadcast about ?witnessing? the landing of a spaceship full of Martians. ?America
saw that the power of the media could appeal to the public easily and cause mass
hysteria? (Williams 25).
Noam Chomsky, an established political thinker and magazine editor, stated in an
interview in 1990: ?If you follow mainstream media with great care and skepticism
and approach it with the right understanding of how propaganda works, then you
can learn a lot. The normal reader is fooled into believing the propaganda that they
are being fed. The media shapes and selects the events and offer their biased opinions
to the mass audiences.? ?The media modifies information to fill what they believe the
public?s interest is? (Szykowny 9).
The media feels that they should act as a ?watchdog.? This causes many of the ethical
problems among the media because they assume the responsibility of keeping a check
on the government, by acting as governmental critics, governmental experts, etc. The
