Winton s Cloudstreet continues to engage readers through its narrative treatment of
hardship and optimism.
In the light of your critical study, does this statement resonate with your own
interpretation of Cloudstreet?
In your response, make detailed reference to the novel.
The novel Cloudstreet, by Tim Winton resonates the idea of engaging readers through
its focus on optimism despite hardship throughout the narrative. The text has the
ability to be appreciated and understood through its textual integrity and realism,
making it an inspirationally driven text for those engaged readers. A cultural
perspective of the novel highlights how the characters in the novel overcome
hardships and gain that sense of optimism, which is a true ... Show more content on

The narrative allows for the idea of segregation to act as an aspect of the hardship
faced by the characters. It distinguishes the differences between those who are
separated, identifying their different lifestyles and values as factors, which has
caused this disconnection. The segregation and major personality differences
between the two families are highlighted in the quote, Sometimes they squared off
at one another like opposing platoons. The metaphor of comparing the two sets of
children to platoon , a word commonly used in war, parallels the separation caused
by the war. This emphasizes a key aspect of the contextual features of the storyline,
as the war has a major impact on the lives of the characters. This also exaggerates
the level of separation between the two families, suggesting they have a war like
standing against each other, caused by different views and opinions. The notion of
segregation between the families is an obvious cause of hardship, as the two families
share so much, whilst being completely different.
There is strong symbolism throughout Cloud Street that parallels this idea of
segregation. The end of the novel signifies the overcoming of these symbols, in order
to unite. The divided backyard is achieved through old signs patched together,
symbolizing the patching together of lives after the previous hardships faced. The
families of Cloudstreet are very different, one who
The Detrimental Effects of Soda and Cola
The Detrimental Effects of Soda
What is your favorite soda? Coke? Do you know what is in soda? Cutting down on
soda can lead to a healthy and better lifestyle. Studies show that soda, though it tastes
good, has many negative effects that outweigh the positive effects. Soda, especially
diet, is detrimental to the health of your body.
My cousin s teacher did an experiment with coke. She put a tooth in coke and left it
for at least a week. The next time they checked the tooth had disintegrated. The coke
had eaten away at the tooth. If this can happen to a tooth imagine what it does to your

Coke s new C2 and Pepsi Edge hope to solve this problem without compromising
taste but there are still many other ingredients in C2 and Edge that can lead to
obesity. Tooth Decay is another problem affecting the US. Both sugar and phosphoric
acid from sodas contribute to it and the soft drink industry admits to it. But the
NSDA (National Soft Drink Association) also says that soft drinks aren t the sole
cause of tooth decay.
A lot of sugary foods, from fruit juices to candy and even raisins and other dried
fruit, have what dentists refer to as cariogenic properties, which means they can cause
tooth decay. Though other foods have cariogenic properties soda definitely has the
largest percentage of these properties.
A federally funded study of nearly 3,200 Americans 9 to 29 years old conducted
between 1971 and 1974 showed a direct link between tooth decay and soft drinks.
Numerous other studies have shown the same link throughout the world, from
Sweden to Iraq. Soda has become the number one choice beverage in the US. The
younger you start drinking soda daily the more likely you are going to develop
osteoporosis, tooth decay, and a myriad of other ailments when older. Soda is okay
in moderation but there are many alternatives. (Duyff) Soda is not the only beverage
that can quench your thirst there are a bonanza of other fluids. These are healthier
than soda and can help you stay away from the detrimental beverage,
The Uniform Crime Report (UCR)
Crime is an ongoing problem in the united states. Victims of crime are individuals
who have been assaulted in an immoral matter that can cause various damages to the
person. The Uniform Crime Report (UCR) is the FBI s yearly publication of serious
crime that occurred within the following year, which are reported by victims, police
officers, and other sources. The UCR is not fully seen as an accurate source of crime
calculation for various reasons. One main reason is the underreporting of crime done
by both the officers and victims.
The victimization report (VR) breaks each crime into subgroups. Each subgroup
shows a better interpretation on which violent crime or other crimes played a higher
role in the rates recorded. In table 1 of the VR,

The Article Psych Me Out Essay
The article Psych Me Out is about a recent graduate, Stacy, who just got hired to
work for a small local CPA firm as a junior accountant. Since he was one of the top
graduates of his class, his managers expected more out of him and therefore
assigned him tasks that he has not been trained on. Since Stacy was still in the
process of learning the ropes he was struggling with meeting due dates. Due to his
poor performance his managers, Bob and Leandra, were more critical of him than
they should have been, and reprimanded Stacy by placing him on probation and
taking away his chance of receiving any bonuses. Throughout the year, Stacy s job
continued to be a challenge. Since he still had not been adequately trained on how
to do certain tasks, he had a higher possibility of making a mistake, and if a mistake
rises, his managers are more likely to once again reprimand him, rather than trying to
fix the problem in a more positive way where Stacy would gain the benefit of learning
from his mistakes. Since the firm was struggling with accounts, a psychologist was
brought in to determine the situation and the main cause for this poor turnover. After
many employees, including Stacy, complained about the poor work conditions, the
psychologist eventually confirmed that the reason for the failing firm was due to
poor managing in the work place. After the managers heard about the suggested
reasons to why their firm was failing, they decided that instead of trying to fix their

User Manual Critique
Many technical fields rely on user manuals, operator manuals and technical
manuals to do their day to day tasks at work. Without these manuals there would be
too much information for one person to know to be able to their job. Accidents,
personal or equipment would be more frequent in the work field. That is why
manuals are developed, to prevent accidents and to keep people informed of
updated information on equipment. So a well developed and written manual will
help a person succeed at their job, which is why someone needs to critique a manual
before it is released to the public.

Conciseness
The reading of each instruction leaves a person with no doubt on what they are
supposed to do, and when a step is done and what step to take next. Each topic is
short and to the point and clear. Consistency
All paragraphs, heading and graphics are consistent with all material that has been
developed in this manual. Graphics are simple and can be easily followed.
Document Design
Graphic s show a picture of the drill or parts of the drill with arrows and hands
showing how to do a particular part, such as inserting the battery on to the drill. If
there was any real issue with this manual is that there is not enough white space.
Sometimes you can get lost because each paragraph and heading is so close
together. The manual though is very organized, with numbering and header
separations. All hazards and warning are easily identified with bold lettering, and a
safety triangle (or danger sign). This was a black and white manual, so there were no
color pictures or graphics, which could lead readers to just skim through the pages
and not really read the important information.
I did find the manual very easy to understand and follow, however there are a few
things that I think that the writers of this manual could have done. Adding color to
the manual does keep the interest of the reader, I found myself wanting to skim
through

Chartered accountants are therefore expected to display professionalism in their work
so that they are able to maintain public confidence in the companies. This is a result
of the accountants reporting the true performance of the companies they represent
(Radebaugh et al, 2012).
The conduct of chartered accountants in the UK is governed by the Code of Ethics.
The latest revision of these ethics took place January 1, 2011. The fundamental rules
that govern the work of these accountants are as follows and similar to those in the
US:
Integrity Accountants should always ensure that they are honest and straightforward
in their activities with every instance that they have clients. They should always
maintain the lines of duty and maintain business relationships during all official
duties (Nobes, 2015).
Confidentiality This calls upon any professional accountant to ensure that they do not
disclose the accounting information of one company to any unauthorized parties.
Such information should only be disclosed if the professional or legal right is granted
by the relevant authority. Information obtained from a company should therefore not
be used for any personal benefit by a professional accountant (Nobes, 2015).
Professional behavior This indicates that professional accountants comply with the

people start to see the potential for airplanes in war, transportation, and shipping.
Other builders disregarded previous doubt about flying and began to replicate the
ideas of the Wright brothers in creating planes with three axes. In addition, the
approach of WWI prompted military personnel to pursue uses of airplanes as a war
machine. The airplane influenced many aspects of American culture after it s

She was the 16th woman to be given a pilot s license and the first to fly across the

independent and did not rely on her parents to provide for her. When she went to
visit her sister in Canada she saw wounded soldiers returning from war. This
prompted her to volunteer with the Red Cross where she met many injured pilots.
This, coupled with the sight of the Royal Flying Corps practicing, gave her a
strong admiration for aviation. In 1920 she went for her first plane ride at an
airshow and from then on she devoted herself to learning how to fly. She took spare
jobs and got enough money to go through aviation training. In 1921 she purchased a
used airplane for herself and a year later flew it to 14,000 feet, a new world record for
female pilots. She had to sell her plane a few years later to provide for her parents
and it wasn t until 1927 that she got back into flying. In 1928 she was asked by a
fellow pilot to fly across the Atlantic and she immediately said yes. She went with
two other pilots and didn t fly at all due to the weather. Still, she was seen as a

account, the novice user won t be able to start working over spread sheet.
Plus, no information is provided regarding how to even start a spread sheet also.
In short a lack of information is provided about creating an account and sign in to

Love In Virgil s The Time Machine
The ancient Roman poet, Virgil, once said, Love conquers all. This has been
conveyed in many ways, and many people tend to believe it. The Time Machine is a
classic novel that will relate to all teens by showing them that love will remain even
when everything else is gone. In The Time Machine, the author uses conflict to teach
that even when humans have lost all intelligence and strength, lovewill always
remain. For example, The Time Traveler shows how the Eloiconvey affection when
he says, We passed each other flowers, and she kissed my hands. I did the same to
hers. This means that after The Time Traveler saved an Eloi named Weena s life,
she grew rather fond of him. As a result, her and The Time Traveler became friends.
This evidence proves that even though Weena is lacking in much, she still is able
to convey her love and affection toward The Time Traveler. Additionally, The Time
Traveler states, Weena had been hugely delighted when I began to carry her, but
after a time she desired me to let her down, and ran along by the side of me,
occasionally darting off on either hand to pick flowers to stick in my pockets. This
evidence proves that a lot of the physical strength and knowledge of the Eloi are
gone since it shows that he is having to carry her, and also that she is using his
pockets as vases. Although she doesn t understand that his pockets aren t vases, her
picking flowers still shows her love and affection for The Time Traveler. Clearly, the
The Integration Of Uzbekistan And Islamic State
The IMU began in 1989 in order to form a protection force for developing small
businesses in the Soviet Union. The group was referred to as Adolant which
means justice in Uzbek. This movement began in the Fergana Valley region which
sits in Namangan, Uzbekistan (Stein, 2014, para. 2). In 1998 the IMU shifted its
operations to overthrow the current leadership of Uzbekistan and follow Sharia
making it an Islamic State. The IMU did not agree with the way Islom Karimov
was running Uzbekistan as president (encyclopedia of espionage, 2015, para. 1).
Osama Bin Laden provided the IMU with 130,000 dollars in a trip to the mountains
of Tajikistan. The money was handed directly to Namangani who was the current
financier for the IMU (Ruzaliev, 2004, para. 9).
According to Ruzaliev (2004), A few weeks later, a meeting took place in Karachi
between the members of Islamic organizations from Pakistan, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt,
the Palestine, Kashmir, Uzbekistan, and Chechnia. They agreed to raise two million
dollars to support the Holy Jihad against Karimov s regime (para. 9).
IMU had been operating in northern Afghanistan at the time of the September 11,
2001 attacks and were greatly setback when Operation Enduring Freedom kicked off
(stein, 2014, p. 2). Stein stated (2014), Sometime after the IMU moved into
Afghanistan after the incursions, Yuldashev took an Islamic oath of loyalty to Mullah
Omar, leader of the Taliban(p. 5). According to Stein (2014), Juma Namangani and
Explain The Changing Attitudes Toward Abraham Lincoln

The Changing Attitudes toward Abraham Lincoln Jefferson Davis, the President of
the Confederate States of America, which was established in 1861 as a rebellion to
the election of Abraham Lincoln, once stated that, Next to the destruction of the
Confederacy, the death of Abraham Lincolnwas the darkest day the South has ever
known. In an interview with Alexander McClure in 1875, ten years after Abraham
Lincoln was assassinated, Davis expressed his realization that Lincoln s death was
devastating, not only to the South, but to the entire nation. However, Jefferson Davis
and the people of the South did not always have this attitude towards Abraham
Lincoln. In fact, they rejected him as a candidate for presidency in the election of
1860, mostly because of his position on slavery. The attitudes toward Abraham
Lincoln across the nation changed from the beginning of his presidency to his
assassination. This shift in opinions toward Abraham Lincoln from rejection to
admiration, especially in the South, is apparent in many sermons, newspaper articles
and the nation s desire to reelect Lincoln when he ran for his second term as President.
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky. Unlike
many other politicians in the past Abraham Lincoln was not born into a family
heavily involved in politics. His father was a farmer; his mother took care of the
house. Abraham Lincoln attended school as a

E banking has spread around the world and has become common these days. In
general, banking services have changed over the past three decades to meet the

needed money for purchases or to make a transaction, he needed to go to the bank by
himself during the bank hours and perhaps waited in a long line to meet a human

with the development of technology and the Internet, the processes of banking have
changed. The consumer can make a transaction from one account to another while

Fundamentalism and Rock and Roll Essay
Holding onto the five fundamentals, as many Christian fundamentalists call them, is
according to the doctrinal truths within the movement. They believe in the
inerrancy of Scripture, which reveals Christ as the Messiah, His virgin birth, the
atonement in His blood, and His bodily resurrection. Additionally, embedded within
the movement is the belief that they, the saved, are engaged in a cosmic war that is
taking place here and now. As Reza Aslan explains a cosmic war or religious war is,
an earthly battle between rival religious groups...a real, physical struggle in this world
and an imagined, moral encounter in the world beyond. This war is a continuous
battle that takes place on all earthly fonts, even on the airwaves.

With classic evangelical hymns like are you washed in the blood of the lamb and
shall the vile race of flesh and blood one can get a feel of the bloody imagery within
Christian hymns, which could sit right beside some of the darker black death and
heavy metal rock genres like Baptized in blood by the artist Death. As a way to fight
against such evils, evangelical groups began to create alternative choices to the
satanic unholy offensive music. The cultural phenomenon known as Contemporary
Christian Music features Christian rock music, which includes Christian heavy metal,
among many other styles of music that reintroduce themes that reinforce the five
fundamentals. With songs of Christ s divine forgiveness and personal salvation that
are backed up by similar musical accompaniment that their secular counterparts sing
but minus all the sex, drugs, parties, and other worldly activities. However, the music
industry has made newer developments that tone down they blatant Christian themes.
For instance, consider the following lyrics from the popular artist Jesus Culture;
I can t get enough of you
Cause I am in love with You
And oh how I long for You
Cause I am in love with You
It burns like a blazing fire
Rises like a mighty flame
My greatest desire
To be seated in love by Your name
From these lyrics, it can be tough to associate them with Jesus Christ rather than sex,
Captain America, Winter Soldier
In the film Captain America, Winter Soldier, the audience gets a closer look at the
relationship between Captain America and Natasha Romano (Black Widow).
Throughout the movie, one factor that always comes into play is whether Natasha
can be trusted as former spy and agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Her past, personality, and
loyalty are what make Natasha a questionable person. Although she seems to have
ulterior motives, she ultimately proves to be very trustworthy in the end.
The main reason Natasha can be perceived as untrustworthy is due to her past as a
spy for the K.G.B. She also states several times that changing her personality due to
the situation is something she does often. This leads others to question which side
she is on and where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is evident when she retrieved the data from the ship; she was the prime suspect.
It is also implied that in her former career as a spy, Natasha had done things she was
not proud of.
Lastly, she and Captain Americaare vastly different which is what puts them at
odds. Captain is upfront and honest, whereas she is coy and playful to the point of
seeming untrustworthy. She is always one step ahead of everyone else and does not
always notify her teammates. When she speaks, she did not always give direct
answers.
On the contrary, Natasha was willing to put herself in danger numerous times in
order to save the world. This type of behavior is evident throughout all of the action
scenes. She fights and puts herself in danger for the greater good. Perhaps her most
meaningful action was leaking all of S.H.I.E.L.D and H.Y.D.R.A s information.
When Pierce reminded her that her past would also be revealed to the world, she
was still willing to go through with the process. As a person who valued her
anonymity as, this was a huge sacrifice, but she realized that what they were dealing
with was something more important. There were also times where Captain America
could not do things alone and she used her skill sets to get them through the situations.
Analysis Of Mirror By Sylvia Plath
Mirror
I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever you see I swallow immediately
Just as is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful
One literary technique that Plath utilizes frequently in her poems is motifs; with
certain topics appearing consistently in her poems: feet, nature, death, and, in
particular, mirrors. Entitled Mirror, this poem personifies a mirror, and what it
experiences through its own eyes. The mirror begins by describing its physical
appearance as silver and exact, and how it has no preconceptions, the mirror is
emphasizing the fact that when looking at one s physical appearance in the mirror, in
this case the lady character in the poem, that the mirror gives the entire truth of how a
person actually appears. The mirror is not willing to alter the image of an
individual because it is not the truth. It is often perceived that the mirror is being
cruel because the woman is not always pleased when seeing her reflection, the
mirror is the voice of honesty in this poem and it is only being truthful to the
woman about her appearance. Later in the poem, the mirror becomes a lake, and
this time when the woman is looking at her reflection, I believe that she is looking
at more than just her physical reflection; she is searching for her inner self. I do
not believe that the woman will be able to find her true self through the reflection
of the lake because the water is able to shape in all directions; in essence, the lady
could shape her own perception of her true self just as water can be shaped. The
poem also mentions that the woman turns to those liars, the candles or the moon,
it is evident through this line to identify that the woman is clearly using the candle
and the moon to alter her true appearance. The woman in the end comes back to
the mirror because she knows that it will always be honest with her. Although the
woman comes to the conclusion that she values the truth, I at first perceived her
as crazy for using a candle in order to make her appear more attractive, but this can be
very relatable in today s society. I realized that everyday I am also a victim of altering
my appearance in a mirror as well; when taking a
Being Safe Is More Important Than Being Free
Being safe is more important than being free.
Since the previous election of 2010 till our current day there have been debates in
regards to how far Britain should allow freedom to stretch whilst maintaining a good
level of safety. There are many facets to safety and freedom from domestic levels,
regional, national and global levels. A recent example of this being the UK
government selling off British NHS patients details to USA insurers, infringing upon
our right to privacy. This is often seen as a breach of safety in eyes of many;
however, it is evident that Human rights were not upheld and safety was considered
to be a bigger factor in this circumstance. Safety is a multi faceted term which takes
on many definitions; to the state it can be classified as the need to use sovereign
powers to make big decision regardless of the consequences in order to protect its
citizen. Citizens understanding of safety may range from street safety and the
endorsement of CCTV to act as a deterrent against petty crimes or on a more grand
scale safety is defended in the Human Rights Act such as rights in the work place
and health and safety requirements. However, the most generically used definition,
according to the Oxford Dictionary is The condition of being protected from or
unlikely to cause danger, risk or injury. Irrespective of the optimistic view that
Britain is often regarded as, the perfect balance between safety and freedom, Susan
George adopts a more pessimistic stance

People s Army of Vietnam from the A Shau Valley in South Vietnam. Located near
the border with Laos, the valley had become an infiltration route into South Vietnam
and a haven for the Peoples Army of Vietnam forces. A multi phase operation, the

Forces were the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry, 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry, and the

abandoned to the enemy soon after it was taken. But the truth is that it was one of
the most key and historical battles of the war, for it spelled the end of Major
American ground combat operations in Vietnam.

Mantram Repitition Study
With the recent wars that the United States has been involved in with Iraq and
Afghanistan there are more opportunities for our military personnel and veterans to
experience some sort of trauma during combat. Military trauma can ultimately leave
veterans suffering from the symptoms of Post Traumatic StressDisorder which can be
debilitating and interfere with normal functioning of daily life. It is estimated that
about 300,000 returning troops suffer from symptoms of depression or PTSD
(Bormann, 2011). Hospitals and institutions have begun exploring other therapy
options and complementary alternatives to help manage the symptoms of PTSD. One
such form of therapy is known as Mantra repetition, an innovative, complementary,

easy to utilize, nonpharmacologic, and can be performed in a multitude of situations.
Ultimately, mantram repetition is an effective alternative or adjunct form of therapy
that is found useful in alleviating the symptoms of PTSD in military personnel. One
article that was obtained through the Journal of Clinical Nursing described a study
that was conducted in an outpatient hospital setting by the Department of Veterans
Affairs in San Diego, California. The study was qualitative in nature and involved
the use of a Mantram Repitition Program for the purpose of managing the
symptoms of PTSD in veterans and evaluating its effectiveness. The participants

Essay about Canada and The Korean War
Overshadowed by the previous, long and devastating Second World War, the
Korean War became known by Canadian veterans as the Forgotten War . After Japan
s defeat in World War II, Korea was split into two parts, North Korea and South
Korea. North Korea was occupied by the communist country of USSR while South
Koreawas held by the Americans and other democratic nations. War officially broke
out on June 25, 1950, when the North Koreans assaulted across the country s
division on the 38th Parallel with their men and artillery behind them. North Korea
and its leaders wanted to unify the whole country from its division by taking over
South Korea under their government. North Korea was allied with China and the
Republic of Korea was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, Canada wanted to follow UN s code of world peace and have a peaceful
reputation. Lester B. Pearson, who was the Canadian Secretary of State for External
Affairs, said that the United Nations must assist the people of Korea to establish
peace and order throughout their territory as the firm foundation for democratic
institutions and free self government. Canada wanted Korea to be a free and fair
country with a democratic government opposed from a communist one. Canada did
not only want to fend off the communist threats but to also free Korea from its
struggles to be a country of freedom. In addition, it was imperative that Canada
joined the war. Not only did Canada want to exert its influence as a middle power
of the UN, but also act as a cool negotiator in the UN. Without a valid coalition, the
U.S. military hawks might decide to use extreme methods to win the war. In the
radio, a reporter announces that if the situation escalates higher, the United States
[will] consider using the atomic bomb. On the occasion of this happening, it may
cause an even greater war, perhaps World War III. That war will be far more deadly
because countries will begin utilizing nuclear warfare. In many ways, Canada used
the Korean Warto improve their relationship with the U.S. by showing their support
for them. Canada s American influence evoked its support towards the Republic of
Korea, who was under attack from the communist nation of North
Changing Business Environment Companies For A New
Customer...
Question 1:
In today s ever changing business environment companies need to explore newer
opportunities and take some risks to succeed. An article provided by Powerlinx, had
surveyed 330 senior management executives, to provide some feedback as to what
benefits could be achieved from creating strategic partnerships. There were six central
benefits. One benefit was gaining access to a new customer base. The expanded
customer base would lead to increased market share which would allow a business to
succeed in their market segment. The second most important benefit would be
expanding revenue. Aligning with other firms that have similar objectives would
make processes much more efficient. When businesses align, there are additional ...

When companies work together, the investment burden is shared and production time
is significantly reduced. The synergy between the four companies will allow them to
each focus on a particular area in order to achieve their strategic plan. In addition to
more efficient resource pooling and shared responsibility, risk is significantly
reduced. According to the Harvard Business Review, a company sets up a joint
venture with a partner that has complementary assets and capabilities, in order to
limit up front investments, speed up market entry, and reduce risk (Vantrappen,
Deneffe). If one of these companies could handle all of the operations themselves,
initiating a joint venture might need to be reconsidered; the competitive advantage
would be too valuable. Unfortunately, none of these companies have that luxury, so
the joint venture is warranted.
Question 2:
One opportunity in external environment which may have led this initiative is the
growing ownership of alternative fuel powered vehicles in the marketplace.
According to the US Department of Energy, alternative fuel powered vehicles were
on the rise in the late 2000s ( 7 8 Alternative ). In regards to liquefied natural gas, the
product was growing rapidly in popularity due to the technological advancements of
natural gas drilling giving way to a surplus of LNG for use ( What Is LNG and Why

Episode 3 s mission briefing is pretty intense. Marrakesh is on the verge of a
revolution and a political conspiracy is unfolding thanks to an army general mounting
a military coup and a Swedish banker being caught embezzling some serious wonga.
Your job is quite simple: assassinate the pair of them.
General Zaydan is sheltering in a school with plenty of protection courtesy of his
military comrades and gaining access to his hideout requires a stealthy approach

Don t get me wrong, Marrakech looks great and holds your attention, but it also

Katherine Paterson s Lyddie
In Katherine Paterson s novel Lyddie, the main character is a factory worker at the
mills in Lowell, Massachusetts who makes cloth using powder looms. Mill
workers typically worked a 13 hour day with two 25 minute breaks for breakfast

Communism And Its Effect On Society
I was often told as a child that humans share the same thing in common as each other
and that was our future destinations. Growing up, I ended up brushing off the

because eventually, I understood what our destination really was the hard way.

Different Cultures, Different Essay
Every society and culture has different ways of interpreting and defining occurrences
by the way their own culture or society functions. A society s culture, consists of
whatever it is one has to know or believe in order to operate in a manner acceptable to
its members (Geertz 242). The rituals, customs, ethics and morals that are attributed
to the cultureshave caused these differences. To understand how the people of one
culture interpret a situation or event, one must evaluate the attributesthat a culture has.
The criteria that an event is based on changes as one culture applies their own ideas
to the given situation. Heroism and violationare two concepts that are easily

What tripped Cohen up, and with him the whole, ancient pattern of social and
economic relationships within which he functioned, was a confusion of tongues.
(Geertz 241)
Geertz explains that the reason for the confusion, and the different interpretations of
the event that took place is a simple misunderstanding that when took place in
clashing cultures with different views, both striving to claim the situation in their
own contexts became a somewhat humorous event. This conflict between cultures
causes a view of a person to change depending on which point of reference they are
being seen from.
In Ernest Hemingway s Indian Camp, the conflict between cultures again cause a
difference of views of the father. The concept of heroism and violation becomes
the issue of conflict. The father or doctor is considered a hero or a violator of the
Indian woman depending on the culture viewing him. From the father s culture, he
is viewed as a hero for his actions at the Indian camp. His actions are viewed as
heroic under the circumstances of his procedure. Because of the culture of the
Indian people, having a white man, an outsider of the tribe, come in and operate on
an Indian woman is viewed as obscene and a violation of the woman not to
Altruism Is Unique In The World Of Animals
Altruism is the practice of selfless concern for the well being of others, or the
behavior of an animal that benefits another at its own expense. Evidence shows that
the act of altruism is unique in the world of animals. The interaction between those
who are selfish and those who are altruistic is vital to humancooperation. A small
group of altruistic people can give enough motivation to a large number of
egotistical to move a mountain. Just as a large number of selfish people could push
a small group of charitable people to change the world. It is the interaction between
both that make this world go around (Nature). The world we live in is a big
machine, and those who help others are the ones who keep it running effectively.

Survival of the fittest is a concept that is widely known across the idea of evolution.
The study done by Haldane concluded that genetic altruism would show some
advances in population numbers, which is overall increasing the spread of genes. The
increased number of altruistic individuals in the society would overall increase the
group fitness, or number of genes spread due to the group benefitting behavior.
Altruism can be known for the cause of all charitable behavior, but there is the
argument that all charity is directly tied in with egoism. This happens when a person
taking part in the charity helps with the idea that someday his own self will be in
need of the same charity. This concludes that all altruistic events make just be a
part of a long cycle of egoism. If so, then altruistic people are essentially just an
egoist in a twisted way. The world overall is a selfish, conceit place. Some say that
charitable work, also known as altruistic behavior is all part of a social contract. If
the egoist breaks the contract in any way, then there is a change that another
person in the future will also break the contract. Maybe that time the contract is
broken it will be the egoist who needs the help and will not receive it. It is all a
vicious cycle that ends up revolving around one s own self interests (Hammond 115

Kushite Art Style
Around the fourth century BC, the manufacturer and trader of iron led to the rise of
the Kush Empire. Kush Empire became a powerful trading center located near the
modern day border of Egypt and Sudan in northeast of Africa. In addition to
producing iron, the people of Kush traded gold, jewelry, pottery, and ivory. The
empire thrived for nearly a thousand years. During that time, the Kushite s developed
an advanced society, adopted some Roman style architecture and developed their own
written language. The Kush Empire also gave women more political power than most
other ancient empires. The art history of Kush starts with the Kingdom of Kerma.
The greatest art production activities occurred in the Napatan and Meroitic periods
(9th century BC to 5th AD). Unlike in other civilizations, most of art productions in
Kush were not controlled by governing authorities. Although stylistic differences
exist, Kushite arts maintain cultural solidity and unique identity. Unlike other ancient
civilizations, Kushite Kings did not practice absolute power. Political authority
involved the priests and militants, who traditionally nominated and determined royal
succession. With most Kushite sculptures, the faces are depicted with little
consideration for idealism . Art historians often refer to the brutal realism of Kushite

Stereotypes In The Unforgiven By Prince Maxon
All royalty seem the same, don t they? They are all civilized, all well mannered,
and most of all, they are all boring, all except for those in the book, The One . In
the book, the characters are anything but civilized and well behaved. The epitome
of bad behavior would be America, the wild ginger who will do anything she deems
morally right, even if it could get her kicked out of the palace. The prince, Maxon,
on the other hand, is far too obedient and struggles throughout the book with whom
he should choose to be his bride; this struggle causes further strife not only between
him and America, but also between him and his father, King Clarkson. So, despite

Prince Maxon can also relate problems in his life to those of certain songs. One
song that is particularly similar to Maxon s struggles is called, The Unforgiven, by
Metallica. The song is generally about a parent disparaging their child and ruling
over them. The song goes, The young boy learns their rules. With time, the child
draws in, this whipping boy done wrong, deprived of all his thoughts, the young
man struggles on and on (Metallica, 1991). These lyrics fit very well to the book
because Maxon s father, the king, is bellicose and tends to rule over Maxon s
every move. Not only that, but when Maxon fails to do something precisely to the
king s wishes he is wiped, just like the boy in the song. In the book, more problems
are caused for Maxon when America finds out about his father wiping him.
America states, Undressing Maxon hadn t been a romantic moment, but I couldn t
tell them I d been tending to wounds on his back specifically delivered by his father
(Cass, 21). Despite the cruel fact that what his father is doing is wrong, Maxon
cannot congregate enough courage to stand up to him. It even boils down to the
decisions he makes: I will not have anyone else telling me who I can and cannot
marry! This is my life you re playing games with! (Cass, 43). This statement proves
just how fed up Maxon is of his fathers un ending edicts and everybody s
astronomical expectations. In the song, it also tells of the boy being too scared to
stand up to his parents: What I ve felt, what I ve known, never shined through what I
ve shown (Metallica, 1991). This meaning that he hides what he feels; because of
fear of his father, the king, his emotions and wants never truly make it to the
A Subtlety Kaa Walker Analysis
1.Kara Walker is an African American artist who is well known for her
contemporary work. As with most contemporary works, her paintings,
performances, prints, and other works delve in social issues and politics, as she
explores race, gender, and identity in her works. She is best known for her
silhouette works, where she depicts and event or story, yet the entire work is in
shadow. While this was her main style, she also worked with sculptures, her most
famous one being A Subtlety, a monstrous set of sculptures and structures
depicting violence and oppression of races and social classes. 2.This work was
commissioned by Creative Time, a non profit, arts organization. This groups goal
was to encourage creative art in the United States, by merging art with everyday
aspects of life. For example, they aided with New York s infrastructure
reconstruction, and encourages artworks to be erected in parks and other public
structures in the city. Walker s work was one of these works, as it was erected in
an old sugar mill/factory in New York City. The irony of a work about oppressed

Genetic Privacy And The Human Genome Project
With bounding advances in the field of genetics, genetic privacy has sparked a
controversy. In the 1980s, the Human Genome Project was formulated to sequence
the entirety of the human genome. The first draft of this project was published in
Nature in February, 2001, about 10 percent short of completion (National Institutes of
Health [NIH], 2015). Originally, scientists had hypothesized that there was anywhere
from 50,000 to 140,000 genes, but after the release of this first draft and the later
completion of the full sequence in April 2003, it was revealed that there were actually
about 20,500 genes (NIH, 2015). As of April 2003, the structure, organization, and
function of these many genes can finally begin to be better understood. While the
completion of the Human GenomeProject seems like a huge accomplishment, there
are those who are worried about its implications. Each person s genome holds a
plethora of essential information that many would like to keep private (Moor, 1999,
p. 261 262). However, the compilation of a national genetic database would benefit
both the fields of medicine and justice by facilitating personalized health care,
improving overall health care, and aiding in the conviction of criminals.
Scientists anticipate that genetic information will be useful in the concept of
personalized health care. While the sequencing of the human genome is the first step
towards this, it does not guarantee success. Rather, it is important to develop a deeper

Total Compensation Benefits
Discuss what you think is the most important benefit, and why?
The most significant benefit is Total compensation package, or total rewards, because
they include far more than salary. Total compensation also includes the indirect
benefits that result, such as 401(k) plans, vacation time, holiday pay, and healthcare
coverage. When a company offers employees an attractive compensation package,
they create an enjoyable environment in which workers want to work, and often stay
longer with the enterprise (Dessler, 2008), and (Lecture Notes, 2015).
Has your opinion changed over the years? Why or why not?
Yes! When I was much younger, I was more attractive to cash benefit versus the total
compensation plan. Over the years my preference has changed.
Lockheed Martin Case Summary
Overall, Lockheed Martin is a highly successful corporation. The organization is a
leader in the aerospace and security industry and is enjoying large financial gains.
However, given market volatility the corporation there are a few modifications the
organization may want to consider. A brief summary of the organization s situation
and, when appropriate, recommendations follows. An organization s mission, vision,
values, and goals drive organizational decisions and, when effective, positively impact
employee and business performance. Lockheed Martins mission, vision, values, and
goals are a perfect fit for the organization. The corporation has effectively
communicated them to the workforce, they are well understood, and successfully
achieved. The organization should continue to analyze the market, its workforce and
competitors, along with its mission, vision,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In Lockheed Martin s case, the organization has developed a strategy to expand
international sales, meet or exceed customer needs and reduce costs, and innovation
that will enable the corporation to continue to succeed in the marketplace. The
corporation should consider leveraging its current portfolio to move into more
commercial markets to help reduce the dependency on the United States government.
Lockheed Martin already has several sources of competitive advantage that it uses
effectively to gain leverage in the market place. However, given that the budget of its
main customer is highly volatile the corporation should look to other sources of
competitive advantage. It would be advantageous of the corporation to use its
innovate workforce and emerging technology to develop green aircraft that use less
fuel and emit less harmful emission. This would be a win for the environment, the
customer, and the corporation and clearly position the corporation as an industry
Modern America Totalitarianism
Modern America and 1984: An Insight into Totalitarianism Imagine a society in
which you have no freedom to exercise your natural rights, but you were safe from
all threats (or so you thought) except the government under which you live. This is
what Ayn Rand lived through during her youth. Rand grew up during the times of
the Russian Revolution and even experienced the horrors that occurred in the
Bolshevik Revolution; she experienced the horror of big government first hand.
Her father ran a successful pharmacy and was considered a member of the
bourgeoisie, but when Vladimir Lenin and his communists seized Russia, he also
confiscated her father s business and assets. Her family was forced to flee to Crimea
to escape exile and possible physical... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has long been said that children are the future, and what way better to corrupt that
future than by educational indoctrination? Many students who have gone to public
school and switched to private school realize that most of what they were being
taught was nothing more than radical leftism and revisionist history. Children are
taught to monitor their parents recycling habits and report them to the teachers to
help keep the planet green (Snyder). As one parent reported to Snyder, They re on
my case about getting a hybrid car. They want me to replace all the light bulbs in
the house with energy saving bulbs. This radical left wing indoctrination has seeped
into the very fabric of children s minds has started to corrupt the future of these
young individuals. A similarity can be drawn between these instances and the
children in Orwell s 1984. Those children are also indoctrinated from a young age
and taught to report their parents suspicious behavior to Party members. Winston s
neighbors are actually reported to The Party by their own children (Orwell ). Though
this seems trivial at best, this is an example of leftist indoctrination being
implemented in the public school system. The foremost example of indoctrination is
the banning of Christian text and prayer on school grounds. This is seen by many as
an attempt to disrupt the moral fabric of society and promote an
Autobiographical Narrative In My Life
Autobiographical Narrative
An incident that occurred in my life was accepting Jesus into it. This to me was a
great achievement, because it made me a better person. Growing up I always went
to church on Sundays, it made your momma happy and kept you out of trouble for
a few hours. I never payed attention, I just bowed when it was time to pray and
stand when it was time to worship. As I was growing older, I had started moving
away a little towards going to church and just did me. Was it my best idea, no. But
at the time, I thought it was. I always got in trouble church or not. I was always a
low key kind of person. Just did me, and try not to get myself in deeper waters then
I am already in. I always kept to myself unless someone wanted to ... Show more

I already got money on my head, and came close to my afterlife. Right when I
thought things couldn t get worse I had to take in my niece, because her daddy
couldn t take care of her. Me and my momma parted ways because of the stress, so
I was out on the streets. Life for me couldn t become lower, Romans 8:28 reminds
us that all things work together for good. That s an easy verse to believe when the
sun is shining, but it s something else entirely in the darkness of tragedy. I was
living with my friend s time to time, but I didn t want to be a burden so I just did
me. At my lowest I asked God for his mercy and grace. It wouldn t hurt asking for
some help from him, so I did. I started going to church, trying to get right with
myself. Gaining knowledge in the Lord, and understanding the word. I reaccepted
Christ into my life and started thinking positive about the bad that has happened.
Suffering applies a force that either pushes us away from God or pulls us toward
him. If we base our faith on the lack of sickness, your faith lives on the edge of
extinction and will fall apart easily. It took me at my worst, but God knew that was
the best time to show his love. God blesses us not by what we do, but by the
attitude we do it with. Even David, a man after God s own heart, was quite sinful
(seduction, murder...) yet God blessed him. Why? Because David always returned to
God, asking forgiveness, praising God s mercy. God knows we are
Skis Essay
In addition to simply aiding our normal locomotion, shoes have been used to create
new ways of movement entirely. The development of skis is somewhat debated,
with many claiming scandinavian peoples were the first to invent them. While
there are many archaeological examples of skis from this area, the oldest found
were actually discovered near moscow, and date back about 6000 BCE. However,
this is not the oldest evidence of skis. Cave paintings in china dating back to 8000
BCE depict the first known example of skis. The first ice skates, however, were
found in Switzerland and date back around 3000 BCE. They used flattened bone to
glide across the ice. It is theorized that ice skating developed alongside nordic skiing
as flat boards... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To the best of our knowledge, roller skates were first seen in london in 1743 as part
of a stage performance by an unknown inventor. They gained popularity over the
next few centuries as recreational items. Heelys were invented in 1999 and allow
for the seamless transition between walking and rolling. Despite their utility
however, these have not caught on as the advent of the motor vehicle has reduced
the need for being fast on foot. Clothes that enhance vision Enhancing the senses is
another important role for tools, and wearables show evidence of this. Eye
enhancements, such as eyeglasses, sunglasses, and goggles all play a role in
allowing us to extend our sight. Before the invention of reading aids using lenses,
snow goggles were used as a tool similar to modern day sunglasses. Snow goggles
were made from driftwood, bone, ivory, or antler. They fit against the face snuggly so
that light entered only through small slits, with soot inside to help avoid glare. These
were used to reduce the amount of light that reaches the eye to prevent snow
blindness, which is especially dangerous in the spring when the bright sun hits fresh
snow. The thin slit would improve visual acuity by creating an artificial squint,
actually enhancing the vision in bright lighting as opposed to just protecting from the
sun. The first examples of these were found from Inuit and Yupik cultures. The

The Importance Of Being A Manager During Times Of
Success...
Introduction:
The following Case Analysis details the many aspects of being a manager during
times of success and struggle. Ron Bent, a plant manager at Engstrom Auto Mirror
plant in Indiana, implements a bonus incentive plan in order to raise morale and
productivity in his company. The following analysis will demonstrate how at its
inception, the plan is successful in its goals, but eventually starts to decline when a
downturn hit the industry. In this paper, several recommendations will be made on
whether or not the Scanlon plan should be abandoned, and strategies Ron Bent can
take to increase performance at the Engstrom Auto Mirror Plant.
Analysis: The Scanlon plan was introduced in the 1930 s by Joseph Scanlon, an
accountant and member of the Steelworkers union (2). The Scanlon plan that
Engstrom used focused on cost saving and higher production, which would then
increase labor savings. Adapting the plan is a long process, and Bent made sure 75%
of employees were on board. Engstroms version encouraged suggestions at all levels,
and encouraged input to help productivity. The plan focused on transparency of
financial and business data to all ranks of the organization (2). With transparency,
allowing suggestions, and an encouragement of new ideas, Bent believed that the
plan would provide a source of intrinsic motivation to employees of Engstrom. As
stated earlier, Bent ensured that at least 75% of his workforce agreed to the plan. By
doing so, he was examining the

  • 2. Fiction and Australian Identity Winton s Cloudstreet continues to engage readers through its narrative treatment of hardship and optimism. In the light of your critical study, does this statement resonate with your own interpretation of Cloudstreet? In your response, make detailed reference to the novel. The novel Cloudstreet, by Tim Winton resonates the idea of engaging readers through its focus on optimism despite hardship throughout the narrative. The text has the ability to be appreciated and understood through its textual integrity and realism, making it an inspirationally driven text for those engaged readers. A cultural perspective of the novel highlights how the characters in the novel overcome hardships and gain that sense of optimism, which is a true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The narrative allows for the idea of segregation to act as an aspect of the hardship faced by the characters. It distinguishes the differences between those who are separated, identifying their different lifestyles and values as factors, which has caused this disconnection. The segregation and major personality differences between the two families are highlighted in the quote, Sometimes they squared off at one another like opposing platoons. The metaphor of comparing the two sets of children to platoon , a word commonly used in war, parallels the separation caused by the war. This emphasizes a key aspect of the contextual features of the storyline, as the war has a major impact on the lives of the characters. This also exaggerates the level of separation between the two families, suggesting they have a war like standing against each other, caused by different views and opinions. The notion of segregation between the families is an obvious cause of hardship, as the two families share so much, whilst being completely different. There is strong symbolism throughout Cloud Street that parallels this idea of segregation. The end of the novel signifies the overcoming of these symbols, in order to unite. The divided backyard is achieved through old signs patched together, symbolizing the patching together of lives after the previous hardships faced. The families of Cloudstreet are very different, one who

Cutting down on soda can lead to a healthy and better lifestyle. Studies show that soda, though it tastes good, has many negative effects that outweigh the positive effects. But the NSDA (National Soft Drink Association) also says that soft drinks aren t the sole cause of tooth decay. A lot of sugary foods, from fruit juices to candy and even raisins and other dried fruit, have what dentists refer to as cariogenic properties, which means they can cause tooth decay. Though other foods have cariogenic properties soda definitely has the largest percentage of these properties. • 6. The Article Psych Me Out Essay The article Psych Me Out is about a recent graduate, Stacy, who just got hired to work for a small local CPA firm as a junior accountant. Since he was one of the top graduates of his class, his managers expected more out of him and therefore assigned him tasks that he has not been trained on. Since Stacy was still in the process of learning the ropes he was struggling with meeting due dates. Due to his poor performance his managers, Bob and Leandra, were more critical of him than they should have been, and reprimanded Stacy by placing him on probation and taking away his chance of receiving any bonuses. Throughout the year, Stacy s job continued to be a challenge. Since he still had not been adequately trained on how to do certain tasks, he had a higher possibility of making a mistake, and if a mistake rises, his managers are more likely to once again reprimand him, rather than trying to fix the problem in a more positive way where Stacy would gain the benefit of learning from his mistakes. Since the firm was struggling with accounts, a psychologist was brought in to determine the situation and the main cause for this poor turnover. After many employees, including Stacy, complained about the poor work conditions, the psychologist eventually confirmed that the reason for the failing firm was due to poor managing in the work place. After the managers heard about the suggested reasons to why their firm was failing, they decided that instead of trying to fix their managing

The manual though is very organized, with numbering and header separations. All hazards and warning are easily identified with bold lettering, and a safety triangle (or danger sign). This was a black and white manual, so there were no color pictures or graphics, which could lead readers to just skim through the pages and not really read the important information. I did find the manual very easy to understand and follow, however there are a few things that I think that the writers of this manual could have done. Adding color to the manual does keep the interest of the reader, I found myself wanting to skim through

This means that after The Time Traveler saved an Eloi named Weena s life, she grew rather fond of him. As a result, her and The Time Traveler became friends. This evidence proves that even though Weena is lacking in much, she still is able to convey her love and affection toward The Time Traveler. Additionally, The Time Traveler states, Weena had been hugely delighted when I began to carry her, but after a time she desired me to let her down, and ran along by the side of me, occasionally darting off on either hand to pick flowers to stick in my pockets. This evidence proves that a lot of the physical strength and knowledge of the Eloi are gone since it shows that he is having to carry her, and also that she is using his pockets as vases. In an interview with Alexander McClure in 1875, ten years after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Davis expressed his realization that Lincoln s death was devastating, not only to the South, but to the entire nation. However, Jefferson Davis and the people of the South did not always have this attitude towards Abraham Lincoln. In fact, they rejected him as a candidate for presidency in the election of 1860, mostly because of his position on slavery. The attitudes toward Abraham Lincoln across the nation changed from the beginning of his presidency to his assassination. This shift in opinions toward Abraham Lincoln from rejection to admiration, especially in the South, is apparent in many sermons, newspaper articles and the nation s desire to reelect Lincoln when he ran for his second term as President. I am not cruel, only truthful One literary technique that Plath utilizes frequently in her poems is motifs; with certain topics appearing consistently in her poems: feet, nature, death, and, in particular, mirrors. Entitled Mirror, this poem personifies a mirror, and what it experiences through its own eyes. The mirror begins by describing its physical appearance as silver and exact, and how it has no preconceptions, the mirror is emphasizing the fact that when looking at one s physical appearance in the mirror, in this case the lady character in the poem, that the mirror gives the entire truth of how a person actually appears. The mirror is not willing to alter the image of an individual because it is not the truth. It is often perceived that the mirror is being cruel because the woman is not always pleased when seeing her reflection, the mirror is the voice of honesty in this poem and it is only being truthful to the woman about her appearance. Later in the poem, the mirror becomes a lake, and this time when the woman is looking at her reflection, I believe that she is looking at more than just her physical reflection; she is searching for her inner self. I do not believe that the woman will be able to find her true self through the reflection of the lake because the water is able to shape in all directions; in essence, the lady could shape her own perception of her true self just as water can be shaped. The poem also mentions that the woman turns to those liars, the candles or the moon, it is evident through this line to identify that the woman is clearly using the candle and the moon to alter her true appearance. The woman in the end comes back to the mirror because she knows that it will always be honest with her. Although the woman comes to the conclusion that she values the truth, I at first perceived her as crazy for using a candle in order to make her appear more attractive, but this can be very relatable in today s society. I realized that everyday I am also a victim of altering my appearance in a mirror as well; when taking a

A society s culture, consists of whatever it is one has to know or believe in order to operate in a manner acceptable to its members (Geertz 242). The rituals, customs, ethics and morals that are attributed to the cultureshave caused these differences. To understand how the people of one culture interpret a situation or event, one must evaluate the attributesthat a culture has. What tripped Cohen up, and with him the whole, ancient pattern of social and economic relationships within which he functioned, was a confusion of tongues. (Geertz 241) Geertz explains that the reason for the confusion, and the different interpretations of the event that took place is a simple misunderstanding that when took place in clashing cultures with different views, both striving to claim the situation in their own contexts became a somewhat humorous event. This conflict between cultures causes a view of a person to change depending on which point of reference they are being seen from. In Ernest Hemingway s Indian Camp, the conflict between cultures again cause a difference of views of the father. The concept of heroism and violation becomes the issue of conflict. The study done by Haldane concluded that genetic altruism would show some advances in population numbers, which is overall increasing the spread of genes. The increased number of altruistic individuals in the society would overall increase the group fitness, or number of genes spread due to the group benefitting behavior. Altruism can be known for the cause of all charitable behavior, but there is the argument that all charity is directly tied in with egoism. This happens when a person taking part in the charity helps with the idea that someday his own self will be in need of the same charity. This concludes that all altruistic events make just be a part of a long cycle of egoism. If so, then altruistic people are essentially just an egoist in a twisted way. The world overall is a selfish, conceit place. Some say that charitable work, also known as altruistic behavior is all part of a social contract. If the egoist breaks the contract in any way, then there is a change that another person in the future will also break the contract. Maybe that time the contract is broken it will be the egoist who needs the help and will not receive it. The epitome of bad behavior would be America, the wild ginger who will do anything she deems morally right, even if it could get her kicked out of the palace. The prince, Maxon, on the other hand, is far too obedient and struggles throughout the book with whom he should choose to be his bride; this struggle causes further strife not only between him and America, but also between him and his father, King Clarkson. Prince Maxon can also relate problems in his life to those of certain songs. One song that is particularly similar to Maxon s struggles is called, The Unforgiven, by Metallica. The song is generally about a parent disparaging their child and ruling over them. The song goes, The young boy learns their rules. With time, the child draws in, this whipping boy done wrong, deprived of all his thoughts, the young man struggles on and on (Metallica, 1991). These lyrics fit very well to the book because Maxon s father, the king, is bellicose and tends to rule over Maxon s every move. Not only that, but when Maxon fails to do something precisely to the king s wishes he is wiped, just like the boy in the song. In the book, more problems are caused for Maxon when America finds out about his father wiping him. America states, Undressing Maxon hadn t been a romantic moment, but I couldn t tell them I d been tending to wounds on his back specifically delivered by his father (Cass, 21). Despite the cruel fact that what his father is doing is wrong, Maxon cannot congregate enough courage to stand up to him. It even boils down to the decisions he makes: I will not have anyone else telling me who I can and cannot marry! This is my life you re playing games with! (Cass, 43). This statement proves just how fed up Maxon is of his fathers un ending edicts and everybody s astronomical expectations. In the song, it also tells of the boy being too scared to stand up to his parents: What I ve felt, what I ve known, never shined through what I ve shown (Metallica, 1991). This meaning that he hides what he feels; because of fear of his father, the king, his emotions and wants never truly make it to the

  • 34. Genetic Privacy And The Human Genome Project With bounding advances in the field of genetics, genetic privacy has sparked a controversy. In the 1980s, the Human Genome Project was formulated to sequence the entirety of the human genome. The first draft of this project was published in Nature in February, 2001, about 10 percent short of completion (National Institutes of Health [NIH], 2015). Originally, scientists had hypothesized that there was anywhere from 50,000 to 140,000 genes, but after the release of this first draft and the later completion of the full sequence in April 2003, it was revealed that there were actually about 20,500 genes (NIH, 2015). As of April 2003, the structure, organization, and function of these many genes can finally begin to be better understood. While the completion of the Human GenomeProject seems like a huge accomplishment, there are those who are worried about its implications. Each person s genome holds a plethora of essential information that many would like to keep private (Moor, 1999, p. 261 262). However, the compilation of a national genetic database would benefit both the fields of medicine and justice by facilitating personalized health care, improving overall health care, and aiding in the conviction of criminals. Scientists anticipate that genetic information will be useful in the concept of personalized health care. While the sequencing of the human genome is the first step towards this, it does not guarantee success. Rather, it is important to develop a deeper
