It cannot fairly be said that in Aravind Adiga s novel, The White Tiger, the only
way to escape the Darkness and advance in society is through violence, as an
alternative route to the Light is presented in the story arc of Vijay, the pig herder s
son turned politician. Balram asserts that the murder of Ashok is not only the
direct cause of his new wealth and status, but also the only possible trigger for his
newfound social mobility. Yet, this is contradicted earlier in the story when he
presents Vijay, the bus driver, as his role model for a successful person. Vijay, in
order to achieve his elevated position, resorted to prostitution; despite not being a
desirable alternative to violence, it is an alternative all the same and therefore
violence is not the only way to escape the Darkness. Following this logic, it is
Balram s story and the immediate increase in wealth that results from the murder of
Ashok that best supports violence as the only means of moving into the Light, and
Vijay s story is the best evidence against that point of view.
Although Balram argues that violence is his only way of overcoming the poverty he
is born into, Vijay, a manborn into status even lower than Balram s, achieves power
and wealth without resorting to violence. Initially Balram presents Vijay as his role
model, condoning the rumors of his prostitution in order to advance socially. He

Abstract: The objective of the lab is to determine the volumes of the polystyrene
spheres with three different measuring tools: Water Displacement, Analytical Scale,
and Triple Beam Balance Scale. The experiment is meant to help understand the
concept and application of precision and accuracy in experimental measurements.
Accuracy is a measure of how closely the results of repeated measurements are to the
true value of what is being measured. Precision is the variability in the results from
the repeated measurements, and how close the repeated measurements were to one
another. In this lab, the method for measuring the volume of the polystyrene spheres
is done with the previously stated tools: Water Displacement, Analytical Scale, and
Triple Beam Balance Scale. The standard deviation for the entire classes volumes and
masses are recorded to determine the densities.
Introduction: Accuracy and precision were the major aspects of the lab. Accuracy is
how close the average of the measured values are to the actual value. Precision is the
closeness of repeated measurements. In the lab, the aim was to get as close as
possible with both accuracy and precision when determining the mass and volume of
the spheres. The mass was determined by weighing the spheres on the Analytical
Scale and Triple Beam Balance Scale. The volume is determined by measuring with a

I couldn t find it in my library because another 1300 odd students at my school have
the same books on their summer reading list. Lastly, most of the books on the list
were in a genre that I like but were not in my
