2. Witch Of Blackbird Pond Essay
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be accused of being a witch? In the
1680s it was a common tactic to accuse a person of your disliking of being a witch.
The Witch of Blackbird Pond, by Elizabeth George Speare is a great account of what
it was like to live during this time. The book tells of a local Quaker being accused of
witchcraft, which leads to a trial and tons of heartbreak. An ordinary person should
not be allowed to accuse someone of being a witch without proper reasoning. It is
completely impartial and unfair to those who are accused and involved. The time
period this book addresses is within the 1680s, during this time religion was a main
factor in how someone carried out their daily life. This time period also contained
many other witch trials, including the most infamous one, The Salem Witch Trials.
This portion of history is important because without learning the effects of wrongly
accusing someone, the courts may currently be prosecuting innocent people based
solely off of someone s opinion or statement.

Puritanism is the belief in the reformation of the Church of England, they sought to
live holy and simplify worship. Within Puritanism you are expected to live your
life as an example and abide by the word of God. The strict lifestyle of Puritans led
to the accusations of people who did not abide by the same laws or rules. Often
times, people of other religions were thought to be evil or witches just by the
religion they chose. This led to pitting religions against each other, which seems to
be the opposite of what the goal should be. Within this portion of history, the Salem
Witch Trials took place. The Salem Witch Trials was a series of hangings and
prosecutions of alleged witches. A group of young girls accused a multitude of
people of being witches or being companioned with the devil: more than 200 people

National ID, a bad idea....
In today s world, we can say that the main danger to privacy, security for people
who lives in free democratic societies can come from the system that will create and
apply supposedly very high tech national ID card.
The main purpose of National ID card system in a country is to develop nationwide
security, decrease crime rate, reveal the terrorists, and guard against illegal immigrants
. NID system has been used conducting regular official transactions between
government agencies and citizens, with benefits claimed in the areas of convenience,
cost saving or fraud reduction. NID could be a combination of the functions of a

Then, where is the privacy?
A national ID card would as a practical matter collect a person s records from a
number of databases in computers, which have been intentionally kept separate
over the years as a privacy measure into one large file available to all. And such
collection of data practically invites abuse from every level of governmental
offices. It will be easy for the criminal hackers to steal someone else s data, once this
system operates. Unauthorized sale of personal data will be normal in practice once
these database are linked.
If the card is used to check the information against a central database, then the
security of this database will become crucial. For a person, the database should be
accessible nationwide in order to support security checkpoints all over the country.
Therefore it will have to be on some networking system. The security necessary to
prevent people from breaking into such a responsive networking system would be
almost impossible to achieve in real life. For this reason, the national ID card system
creates security risks. That would otherwise not exit.
The ID card would be used not just by the government and the security agents, but
also by the employers, schools, hospitals, banks, hotels, etc as their primary ID cards.

4. Water Pollution Essay
Water is life s matter and matrix, mother, and medium. There is no life without
water. (Szent Gyorgyi) This powerful phrase was coined by Albert Szent Gyorgyi, a
Nobel Prize winning biochemist. Even in the early 1900 s when Albert lived, people
were talking about water pollution. Pollution is still even today, a hot topic of
politics. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, pollution
is the action of polluting,
especially by environmental contamination with man made waste. Pollutants can be
more than synthetic waste. Pollutants can be natural such as soil, volcanic ash, and
minerals. Whether the pollution is natural or accidental, humans should always
carefully monitor pollution in our waterways. Pollution can affect the life from plants
to wildlife, and even humans. Therefore, having regular water testing is important for
maintaining and monitoring pollution, animal populations, and overall water quality.
Water testing can consist of PH, hardness, nitrate/nitrite, in addition to bacteria
testing. The North Carolina Health and Human Services require far more testing for
the local waterways such as testing for uranium and radionuclide levels. This project
will focus on the local water sources such as ditches, streams, and bays. The water
samples came from around Dixon High School, Chadwick Shores Neighborhood, and
various ditch systems within Onslow County. Regular water testing is important for
monitoring pollution because of the lethal damage pollution can cause.
5. Analysis Of Jack London s The Call Of The Wild
In his novel, The Call of the Wild, Jack London wants us to see the step beyond the
survival of the fittest to the complete adaptation to and domination of a once
unfamiliar and unforgiving environment. Using a third person, limited omniscient
narrator, the cold, icy Yukon wilderness, and a journey from lazy farm life to the
deadly work of a sled dog, we see Buck, a Saint Bernard/Scotch Shepherd mix
slowly return to his ancestral roots. As Jacqueline Tavernier Courbin states in her
book The Call of the Wild: A Naturalistic Romance, The book deals less with the
concept of evolution than with that of devolution (Courbin pg 57). London asks us
to believe that happily domesticated farm dog, Buck, can not only survive life as a
sled dog in the Yukon, but can become completely in tune with his primitive inner
self, and ultimately thrive as a leader of a wolf pack. The narration allows us to see
inside of Buck s mind, to share with him his visions, and to hear with him the call
of the wild. A reoccurring theme in The Call of the Wild is Buck s visons of a
primitive version of himself with a hairy ape like man. The third person, limited
omniscient narratorcan show the world around Buck, but can also go inside of Buck
s mind, giving us the perfect viewpoint to experience these visons with him, without
limiting us the way we would be if the narrator was Buck himself, or unable to share
in the visons at all if the narrator was one of the humans around him. These visons
help Buck
6. The Words Of Salman Rushdie
Instead of going through life without meaning, individuals try to pursue their
interests with purpose. Athletes practice everyday, hoping to improve their
performance; farmers wake up early in the morning, readying themselves for a long
day of planting; students study hard for exams, hoping to get a high grade. Although
such daily activities may seem disconnected and unrelated, a sense of purpose and
propensity to make a larger contribution to the world pushes these characters to act.
Connecting this idea of society to literature, novelists seek to write with a purpose,
too. In the words of Salman Rushdie, a British novelist, It may be that writers in my
position, exiles or emigrants or expatriates, are haunted by some sense of loss,... Show

Through this passage ( It may be that writers in my position ... some of whose
fragments have been irretrievably lost (Imaginary Homelands, 10 11)) from Imaginary
Homelands, Salman Rushdie emphasizes the essay s theme of perfection through
imperfection (Imaginary Homelands, 19). To achieve perfection while bringing forth
memories, the passage from Imaginary Homelands stresses how consciously writing
about and indicating doubt in one s recollection will help to patch the shattered state
of the broken mirror. Rushdie starts Imaginary Homelands by describing an old
photograph of the house he grew up in. He realizes upon a visit to the home in
Bombay years later that because the 1946 picture is black and white his memory
ha[s] begun to see [his] childhood in the same way, monochromatically (Imaginary
Homelands, 9). Wanting to make his writing more vivid than merely black and white,
Rushdie realize[s] how much [he] want[s] to restore the past to [himself], not in the
faded greys of old family album snapshots, but whole, in CinemaScope and glorious
Technicolor (Imaginary Homelands, 9 10). Despite this desire, he explains in the
passage that his physical alienation from India almost inevitably means that we will
not be capable of reclaiming precisely the thing that was lost (Imaginary Homelands,
10). However, rather than forfeiting to his own mental limitations, he emphasizes that
expressing the imperfections and doubts in his memory can strengthen a story:
7. Gospel Of Mark Analysis
Bible Scholar David Garland points to two possibilities as to why Mark s Gospel
is written in a narrative style or form. Garland believes the Gospel of Mark either
came from an oral story circulating in the Jerusalem church or it came from a
firsthand account of the Apostle Peter. Some bible scholars point to the idea that the
Gospelof Mark was narrativized, so it could be heard rather than be read silently.
Bible scholar Robert Tannehill believes the Gospel of Markmay even have been
collected and delivered orally before it was ever written down. Michael Licona
believes if a certain text appears in all three Synoptics, the Gospel of Mark is the
most likely source for Matthew and Luke s accounts. Licona notes that this rule
should not be held hard and fast, since Mark may also have been using an oral story
while Matthew and Luke choose another source or omitted material where it differs
in each of their Gospel s. The Apostle Peter seems to be the eyewitness account
which Mark narrates into a single unified story, which centers around a single central
figure Jesusand a group of His closest companions. If the author of Mark was using
an oral story to write his gospel from, this would definitely explain its narrative style.
Some other evidence which points to the Gospel Mark being an oral story being
written down is its brevity and action where the other gospels such as Luke, which
is longer having 24 chapters of more and 1,100 versus. The Gospel of Mark is the
shortest
8. Analysis Of The Article The Life Of East St Louis ...
The article Life in Mississippi: East St Louis, Illinois is one that is not taken
lightly. The article shows one the injustice that African Americans face in the city
of St. Louis. The article all together is shocking and heartbreaking. To know that in
a country that is suppose to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, there still is
so much injustice is not only eye opening but also upsetting. One of the 2 most
heartbreaking parts for me was when Kozol describes the old men leaning on his
cane listening to Jesse Jackson and crying. This is something so powerful to me
because this is someone who has experience all of the hardships that east St. Louishas
to offer and he has to live knowing that not much has change and maybe Jesse
Jackson was the only one promising the change they deserve. The last scene was
when one of the students goes up to Kozol after class and tell him that what Dr.
King did was nothing because they are still living in such horrible situations. For a
teenage kid to think and feel that way, they must have had to suffer through so
much, which is exactly what the article is able to show us, the injustice that these
kids face on a daily basis. Having read this is shocking to one because we live in a
different area where we aren t prone to see such things and because we have grown
up and taught to believe that racism and poverty is almost non existing because this
is American a country that doesn t fail the people.

Julius Caesar, the man who turned Rome into a force to be reckoned with was a
great leader, however his long and powerful rule was ended with a simple
assassination because he abused his power after dictating the stronghold of Rome.
History has proven to the Historical community that if one obtains power they are
likely to misuse that power. The two authors that will be used in my literary analysis
essay are Coldplay and Alexandre Dumas. The two text that will be discussed are
The Count of Monte Cristo and Viva La Vida. Each paragraph will be relating
diction used by both authors to prove a point. In the Count of Monte Cristo
Edmond Dantes a sailor is framed and put in jail. After many painful years he escapes

The diction used in Viva La Vida and the Count of Monte Cristo provides a
negative connotation seeing that the poem Viva La Vida, and The count of Monte

puppet on a lonely string, (Chris Martin 31). In the Count of Monte Cristo
Alexandre Dumas writes Monte Cristo cast a rapid glance around him. Andrea had

because Chris Martin uses the words puppet on a lonely string. Puppet must be a
metaphor to the fact that he was a king that was being used by the people, and he was
just a figure taking the blame for everything that occurred. Lonely must

11. U.s. History During The Colonial Period
One of the most significant events in U.S. history during the late colonial period
was the Boston Tea Party. After the Boston Massacre in spring of 1770, all of the
Townshend acts had been repealed except the tea tax, and tensions went down, for
the most part, between the colonists and the British. Two years later, however, the
Gaspee incident and consequent formation of the Committee of Correspondence
brought the tension back, to an alarming degree. Then in 1773, when Lord North
tried to help the British East India Company by allowing them to export tea to
America without paying taxes, many colonists were furious. The price reduction in
the tea was rightly seen as both a sneaky business tactic, and an attempt to pacify the
colonies so Britain could continue taxing them unfairly. By December 16th of that
year, a group of Patriots in Boston made a decision that turned out to have
monumental consequences: Dressed as Mohawks, the rebels destroyed an entire
shipment of British tea, throwing over 300 chests of it overboard as other colonists
cheered. Lord North and King George were furious and determined that the colonists
must either submit or triumph (Tindall and Shi 128). This so called Tea Party led to
the creation of the Coercive Acts. Enacted by Parliament in 1774, they were designed
to punish the rebels by setting harsh restrictions and rules. The Boston Port Act, for
example, mandated that no one could use the Boston port until the East India
Company was reimbursed

American Middle Eastern Minority
One of the least known minority groups in the United States is the Middle Eastern
minority. Although the place of Middle Easterners became the forefront of public
discussions recently, especially with relation to Islam and terrorism after 9/11,
Middle Easterners in the United States have a long history. They have become part of
the American society, and many second and third generation Americans with Middle
Eastern background have become publicly recognizable figures, working in the
business, political, entertainment, and media sectors as well as the U.S. military.
Among these figures are General John Abizaid, Apple Inc. co founder Steve Jobs,
actress Shannon Elizabeth, Miss USA Pageant Rima Fakih, and political and social
activist Ralph Nader.
Majority of Middle Eastern Americans are of Arab descent although there is a
sizable population of Iranian Americans. It is estimated that at least 1.7 Americans
are of Arab descent and over 300,000 Americans are of Iranian descent. Iranian
Americans are largely concentrated in the states of California, Texas, and
Washington D.C., while Arab Americans live in all 50 states. One third of all Arab
Americans live in California, New York, and Michigan. Overwhelming majority of
Arab Americans (94%) live in metropolitan areas of New York/NJ, Los Angeles,
Chicago, Detroit, and Washington, D.C. The largest group among Arab Americans is

The death of a loved one can be tragic. It often alters how people think, feel, and
act. Some people withdraw from life, some move closer to God, and some appear to
lose their minds. Shakespeare s Hamlet and Samuel Johnson both lost someone very
close to them, but found very different ways to deal with their losses. Hamletand
Johnson have only a few things in common. Both were written long ago and discuss
death of family members. Johnson lost his wife, while Hamlet lost his father.
Although the person they lost and how they died is different, the events changed
both men s lives. Both of these men made the choices to act the way that they did

Hamlet had all amounts of opportunity for education and travel. Johnson was born
into poverty and poor for most of his adulthood (Tippens et al, p 25). Never having
to want for anything made it difficult for Hamlet, because he lived the great life he
could not handle loss and he became mad with the obsession of righting the wrong
that was done to him. Johnson being poor his entire life, which made him
appreciate what he did have and desire to keep it as long as he could. In writing
Hamlet , Shakespeare focused on avenging the death of King Hamlet, fueling
Prince Hamlet s anger with images of his dead father. Johnson used poetry and
prayer to bring peace to his life. Both men were dealing with a great loss but the
way they dealt with the loss shaped their lives in different ways. Hamlet never
stopped being angry, he was angry with his uncle, and angry with his mother, even
angry with his father for not being able to be the King that he thought he was to be,
but most importantly he was angry that he lost the appearances of the perfect life.
Because Johnson grew up poor and did not always have everything he desired he
treasured what he did have, asking God to remind him of what he had when his
wife was alive brought him peace, and brought him closer to God. Although some
would disagree, how a person deals with death greatly affects how they live their
life. Hamlet did not deal with death or loss well and because of that he lost everything,

have round characteristics rather than flat ones. Within the story Hunchback of
Notre Dame, betrayal plays a key role in the book s plot and contributes to the

Many look at the subject of history as sifting through facts and personal accounts to
uncover the events of the past. However, history is more than dry facts. History often
intertwines with culture to give a more well rounded view of particular places and

might be common to think of nationalism in terms of revolt, nationalism also served
as a unifying force through cultural elements, such as folklore. Individuals from
around the world began collecting folk tales, songs, and dances that contributed to the
centralization of nationalistic movements that created independent nations. One such

artifacts such as stories, dances, ballads, and hand crafts reveal general beliefs of
particular groups.15Child embodied the Romantic nationalism movement. When
Child recorded the English and Scottish Popular Ballads, he specifically wrote in the
vernacular and dialect of the groups where he collected the stories and songs. Also,
his bibliography lists over fifty manuscripts in addition to several hundred printed
collections. For each ballad, he included every version he knew of. He preceded
each ballad with a note explaining its origin and its parallels in world literature,
referencing texts in over forty languages. 16 Child researched manuscripts from
England and Scotland, particularly old manuscripts that had transcribed the words of
actual singers before cheap printing had allowed corruptions to creep into the texts.
To retain the authenticity of the ballads, he planned to use only works orally
transmitted by uneducated people. 17 Additionally, Child sought both advice and aid
from scholarly communities located in Britain and North America, especially Child s
fellow Harvard scholars during
22. The Last Space Lord
I am number 69, the last of my kind. We were the space lords and there were 70 of
us on earth. We came because the Virus Fang destroyed our planet. We came here
in individual transport no two space lords came together. The way that I made it
here is by a Legof. A Legof is the name of our spaceships back on my planet that
can travel in any atmosphere and disguise itself as anything. The Legof is as living
as I am. Most of us traveled that way, but there were a few of us who knew how to
teleport. Now I am the last one left to save the world from the Virus Fang. I have
been hiding from the monsters that killed most of my brothers. The Virus Fang
search to destroy all life from space lords to humans.
The scars of my dead brethren are split between my two legs. Each of the scars is
engraved with a small picture of which of my brethren it represents, leaving a
memory of those who I have lost in battle. The scars hurt every once in a while. It s
almost like they are still living as a part of me. Some mornings I wake up and the
pain is so unbearable that I actually believe that my brethren are crawling out of the
scars on my leg and coming back to life.
It s morning. It seems almost impossible to get out of my warm, cozy confortable bed
on this seemingly normal morning. But the warm smell of hot cocoa in the air
awakens me filling with happiness and joy. All of my childhood memories of my
mom s delicious hot cocoa. It is almost like I m in one of those human children

23. Jonathon Swift Misogyny
Jonathon Swift steps into risky territory as he addresses misogyny in the invasive,
satirical way he does in his (year) controversial poem The Lady s Dressing Room.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Lady Montagu takes advantage of her literary pull and
writes a satirical response, clearly offended by the misogynist message she
assumed the poem to have. While Swift s poem gives a significant amount of
evidence to justify Montagu s retort, there is perhaps a deeper amount of evidence
that suggests she missed Swift s point. Each poem has a satiric closure at its end, but
Swift s choice of words lean towards a position of commentary on misogynyrather
than a position supporting it. In contrast, the last line of Montagu s poem pins Swift
down as a staunch... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After their beauty has been brought to life from the dung in which they were planted
in, women become gaudy tulips (). Understandably, one can see how Lady Montagu
may have danced over this image with the stench lingering from the final word she
read. Had she taken the time to analyze this phrase, she may not have been so harsh
in her action. To begin, one must start with gaudy, simply because of its modern
connotation to mean something is showy, or tasteless in its ornateness. In the context
of this poem, this word did not have such a connotation, so as it appears to mean,
simply, luxurious (Oxford English Dictionary). Keeping this is in mind as one looks
at the context of the tulip at this time, it is clear that this simple comparison to a
flower actually as much more meaning to it than at first glance. Just before swift s
time the tulip caused a financial crisis because of how desired it was (Donatini).
This being said, the tulip had not only visual beauty but historical extravagance.
Knowing the background on both gaudy and tulip, it is easy to see that Lady
Montagu failed to see the rich beauty Swift truly was emphasizing that is found
within women, a beauty that is truly dependent upon, not despite, their dung like
qualities. [This imagery paints an incredible picture of the idea that beauty can, and
traditionally does, come from forth from unexpected places. This is true especially
when one takes the image further in terms of the seed of the tulip having contained
within it all the beauty it will possess when it becomes a full flower, thus needing the
rich dung to encourage that beauty to blossom.] It is evident that Montagu missed all
this image has to offer a woman judging by the harsh, though clever, final line in her
poetic
24. The Importance Of Foreshadowing In The Monkey s Paw
The Monkey s Paw is a supernatural short story by author W. W. Jacobs first
published in England in 1902. In the story, three wishes granted to the owner of the
monkey s paw, but the wishes come with an enormous price for interfering with
fate. I agree on how some occasions the events are giving away as you can see in
this sentence, how the friend gives Mr. White a magical wishgranting monkeypaw,
now we all know what happens next something always goes wrong on granting
wishes. It gives most of its story away before it happens such as his son saying
something like he will not see what happens to the monkey paw.

In conclusion, Hark at the wind, said Mr. White, who, having seen a fatal mistake
after it was too late, was amiably desirous of preventing his son from seeing it.
This quote displays foreshadowing because during this event he makes a mistake
and doesn t realize it until after it s too late. Also I wish for two hundred pounds,
said the old man distinctly. A fine crash from the piano greeted the words,
interrupted by a shuddering cry from the old man. His wife and son ran toward
him. It moved, he cried, with a glance of disgust at the object as it lay on the floor.
As I wished, it twisted in my hands like a snake. Well, I don t see the money, said his
son as he picked it up and placed it on the table, and I bet I never shall.
In this quote, when Mr. White wishes for two hundred pounds, Herbert says that he
doesn t see the money and he bets he never will. The reader is able to make
predictions of what could happen later in the story from hints and clues in the

26. Three Views of Population Growth
Scenario 1 Disastrous
As the century began, natural resources are under increasing pressure, threatening
public health and development. Water shortages, soil exhaustion, loss of forests, air
and water pollution, and degradation of coastlines afflict many areas. As the world s
population grows, improving living standards without destroying the environment is
a global challenge.
Most developed economies currently consume resources much faster than they can
regenerate. Most developing countries with rapid population growth face the urgent
need to improve living standards. As we humans exploit nature to meet present needs,
are we destroying resources needed for the future? In the past decade in every

В•Forests: With improved technology, it is easier than ever to maintain and even
improve on the amount of forestry. More trees are being planted and grown, while
larger areas are being converted into new forests. As stated earlier, forests provide
over US$400 billion to the world economy annually and are vital to maintaining
healthy ecosystems. Future demands for forestry products will not even exceed 25%
of consumption.
В•Biodiversity: As stated earlier, the earth s biological diversity is crucial to the
continued vitality of agriculture and medicine and perhaps even to life on earth
itself. The global population has realized the importance of plant and animal species
and has begun to reproduce those plant and animal species which were once on the
verge of extinction.
В•Global climate change: The earth s surface has begun to cool due to the lowered
amount of greenhouse gas emissions. The global temperature will begin to decrease
and sea levels would remain at a normal level. The once feared issue of global
warming will become nothing more than a distant memory.

Cultural Diversity
November 15, 2016
During the 1920s in an effort to reduce crime and corruption the prohibition on
alcohol was passed, little did these law makers know they were only worsening the
situation. The streets started to run rampant with crime, and bootleggers rose to
power as organized raised as well. As organized crime rose so did the Mafiosas.
Throughout the 20th century the mafia has controlled the organized crime scene
with an unwavering fist only for its rule to be challenged by other families. The
mafia s bosses give each family its own unique style whether they be a media
persona like Al Capone, A brutal killer like Charles Luciano, or completely insane
like George Moran.
Alphonse Capone is perhaps one of the most notorious gangsters of all time being
remembered in infamy as a very successful businessman and a stone cold killer.
Before Capone would become a mob boss he lived in a run down part of New York
city. Capone went to a Catholic school, where he showed academic promise, but due
to the violent nature of Catholic school Capone was expelled from school at the age
of fourteen for assaulting a female teacher (A E Television Networks). After that
incident the young Capone picked up odd jobs until he met the gangster Johnny Torrio
. Torrio had a huge impact on Capone s life, giving him a look at how organized
crime were transforming from gangs, into empires. Capone bounced around from

29. Socrates Vs Socrates
Socrates and Aristotle would think that philosophy was for the greater good and
expanding the minds of those around them. Socrates in particular would regard
philosophy as conversational and weeding out those who know and those who do not.
Aristotle would use philosophy to try to reach the conclusion on what happiness is.
These great thinkers believed absolute contemplation was the greatest pleasure human
beings could reach, so for them philosophywas reaching a type of Nirvana. Take the
Apology as an example of what Socrates thought about philosophy. When charged
with atheism and corrupting the youth he defends himself by claiming he is an
ignorant man. Socrates is on a search for the wisest man after being told by an oracle

Sadly, we know of Socrates fate and with him trying to change Athens for the better
it backfires on him. But, Socrates leaves those who attended his trial his with some
final words that speak to who he is and how he felt about what he was doing
regarding his philosophy. If, I say, now, when, as I conceive and imagine, God
orders me to fulfil the philosopher s mission of searching into myself and other
men, I were to desert my post through fear of death, or any other fear; that would
indeed be strange, and I might justly be arraigned in court for denying the
existence of the gods, if I disobeyed the oracle because I was afraid of death: then I
should be fancying that I was wise when I was not wise. For this fear of death is
indeed the pretence of wisdom, and not real wisdom, being the appearance of
knowing the unknown; since no one knows whether death, which they in their fear
apprehend to be the greatest evil, may not be the greatest good (Apology, Plato). As I
stated in my introduction Socrates and Aristotle believed that contemplative thought
was the highest form of human life. That this concept of thinking and attempting to
answer life s hardest questions was the best thing to occur to any human being.
When looking at their point of view of what is the highest kind of pleasure a human
can achieve it begs the question if that is

In Henrik Ibsen s A A Doll s House ,the name is pervasive throughout the entire

around her; using her like a doll. Nearly every character in the play acts the part of
a doll, conforming to societal norms and bending to the will of those around them. It
serves to show how society in the time frame often compelled people to use one

An important aspect of her dream world is the lack of her recognizing cause and
effect. Nora s lackluster approach is prominent in many places through the story. An
example of such being her disregard towards others, for example when she blames
Mrs. Linden for her macaroons. Though she is just trying to hide the misdemeanor
she cares not for who she hurts along the way. Another example of her dream world
is her acquiring of material possessions. Nora constantly attempts to fulfill herself by
buying things: candy, dresses, toys etc., rather than accomplishing anything of
meaning . She has never used her time to be with her husband in their near decade
long marriage. She constantly dumps her children on a nurse instead of bonding with
them herself. Although this may have been common practice at the time, it serves to
express her lack of care.
In this dream world, Nora rides back seat in her own life. She becomes but an
object. She reacts to other s expectations instead of working for herself. In
consequence to her passive nature, Torvald is incredibly possessive of Nora, often
adding the word my to his pet names. Once, Torvald refers to her as his dearest
property ; Mrs. Linden states that she will save Nora at any price , as though Nora
was able to be sold and bought. Despite her infatuation with acquiring things, Nora is
but a possession herself.

32. Impact Of Freedom In The Gilded Age
During the Gilded Age, growing disparities between the rich industrialists, financiers,
and employers of the era and poorer workers contributed towards a shift in people s
opinions and beliefs about freedom. The elite and the urban poor came to have
contrasting views on what freedom meant and what social conditions and
governmental roles promote and protect the liberties of citizens.
The elite s definition of freedom began to focus on laissez faire economics and
property rights. They believed that control over the expression of property rights was
paramount to freedom and that government and labor unions should not interfere.
Such interference, they believed, would be detrimental to freedom and the public
good. They embraced a negative definition of freedom that promoted unregulated and
unrestricted free markets and limited government. With views that were increasingly
influenced by Social Darwinism, they believed that interference would go against
natural law and social evolution. Social Darwinist thinkers took what Darwin had to
say about evolution, overly simplified it, and tried to apply it to social problems.
They suggested that evolution occurred in societies just as it does in nature. With this
mentality, they believed themselves and corporate industry as the fittest and best
adapted to a changing world and economy, which they felt was evidenced by their
wealth, power, and dominance in the market place. Given this thinking, they felt they
were better suited than
33. Severe Social Isolation
Severe Social Isolation What does it mean to be human? How as a society do we
consider the essence of humanity? Is biology or social interaction the crucial
component of what defines our humanity? These are essential questions that
require enormous investigation and introspective analysis. These questions are
extremely difficult to investigate in a scientific setting. Finding subjects in a
controlled setting would raise too many ethical questions for social and behavioral
scientists to justify, so cases involving feral children exposed to severe social
isolation provide a crucial form of evidence and foundation for analysis. The case
of Oxana Malaya is one such scenario. Social isolation is the state in which an
individual has not been able to communicate and interact with other individuals. The
lack of human interaction affects the individual and leads to severe consequences.
The individual is unable to have a normal development and may lack human
characteristics such as language or the ability to communicate and interact with
other humans. In cases where a child has been neglected and isolated from society
the individual may begin acquiring animal characteristics or behaviors. This has
been documented when considering the case of Oxana Malaya. A Ukrainian girl
named Oxana Malaya is often referred to as the dog child. Oxana was born on
November 4th 1983 in rural Ukraine. (Grice 2006) Oxanas parents were alcoholics
who, in one particular drunken stupor, left their

Firstly, I admire Martin Luther king for his vision that we are equal. Even though
African American were no longer slaves to whites, they were living racism,
segregation, discrimination by government, neighbors, schools, places and public
transport. At that time, Martin Luther king stood up to fight for equality, where
everybody is the same. To do that he was dedicated, worked hard to convey the
same value of equality to everyone. He did not give up for his ancestor s past or for
the limitations in the present, he stood up with faith and hope that one day black and

together as fools.

41. The Negative Effects Of NSA Phone Tappinging
What is privacy? Is it the ability to be in a situation which allows you to do things
without other people seeing you or disturbing you? If it is, then it is always being
violated by new and upcoming technologies. One of many technologies that are
challenging privacy is NSA Phone tapping. NSA Phone tapping is a program that
allows a personto monitor whom a person calls and when a person calls. This
program started in 1952 but required a warrant to spy on Americans. After the
attacks on the twin towers The white house asked the NSA what they could do to
protect American while still being legal. The White house allowed the NSA to
track Americans calling a person from Afghanistan. The NSA believed they were
authorized to track domestic phone calls and emails, eventually the attorney
general decided the program was legal. Only recently when Edward Snowden
exposed the NSA of their wicked doings there has been an unrest among
Americans. N and advancing technologies such as NSA phone tapping has certainly
negatively affected privacy in this era because it causes the citizen s moral to be
low, it can be obtained by bad people and it s ineffective. NSA cell phone tapping has
many negative effects that are endangering the privacy of others and meanwhile
lowers the morale of the people. For instance, cell phone tapping is causing an
unhappy community because they are being relinquished of their privacy. Another
reason is, If other people have this power it could cause many problems such as stolen
information and it breaks technical systems, as the very protocols of the Internet
become untrusted(Gale, Opposing Viewpoints). For instance, millions of people saw
their computers shut down by ransomware with demands for payments in digital
currency to have their access restored. Therefore the NSA doesn t trust the people
that they work with because they could work for the enemy causing a massive cut in
employees. Some of the ex employees hack into the program for revenge(New York
Times). Lastly, The NSA has failed to pass constitutional muster and has been
violating the Fourth Amendment by collecting information from millions of ordinary
Americans without a warrant. For instance, the fourth amendment states The right of
42. Successful Users And Leaders Of Big Data
Successful users and leaders of Big Data: Over the last decade, organizations
thriving on their competition by leverage analytics as the tool for their business
decisions. Big Data technologies have enabled businesses to get insights that
make them competitive. Following are some of the companies who have
performed much better, even in the recession era, in their verticals by leverage Big
Data. UPS: UPS tracks data on 16.3 million packages per day for 8.8 million
customers, with an average of 39.5 million tracking requests from customers per
day. The company stores over 16 petabytes of data coming from telematics sensors
in over 46,000 vehicles. UPS tracks delivery truck data around their speed,
direction, braking, and drive train performance. This data used to monitor daily
performance and redesign of UPS drivers route structures. This initiative, called
ORION (On Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation), is arguably the world s
largest operations research project. It captures online map data to reconfigure a
driver s pickups and drop offs in real time. The project has already led to savings in
2011 of more than 8.4 million gallons of fuel by cutting 85 million miles off of
daily routes. UPS estimates savings of $30 million per day, so the overall dollar
savings are substantial. The company is also planning to use data and analytics to
optimize the efficiency of its 2000 aircraft flights per day. (Thomas H. Davenport,

43. A. S. Byatt s The Pink Ribbon
A. S. Byatt s story The Pink Ribbon is a story about change in a marriage as a result
of a traumatic experience, as well as how the struggle between duty and love
manifests themselves. In this story, a man doing what he thinks is his duty becomes
overwhelmed with feelings of anger, fear, and resentment after his transition from
spouse to caretaker. Through seemingly imagined encounters with a beautiful young
woman, this man is reminded of his wife and what it is like to have meaningful
contact with another person that is not consumed by taking care of someone else,
which causes him to make a choice in the name of mercy, both for himself and his
wife. Byatt shows the changes in James and Madeleine s relationship through the use
of diction,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
James believed the doll Dipsy was equivalent to Mado, so the use of the word
suffocating suggests that he thought Mado was suffocating or trapped and the
only way to help her was to give her release through death, although it also could be
hinting at the method he was going to use. Byatt wrote that every time James went
outside he took huge gulping breaths, which suggests that James felt trapped
himself and might have thought that if Mado were no longer around he would be
able to breathe again. James visits from the fetch (234) ,Dido, also foreshadow
Mado s death. A fetch in folklore is an omen of death. Since Dido reminded him of
his wife and what their relationship used to be like, it makes sense that Mado s
death was forthcoming. The last instance of foreshadowing is in the final
paragraph of the story, ...the Teletubbies were sitting on the end of the casket
shaped cradles,... (236), which, again, goes back to the symbol of the Teletubbies
doll. The idea of the Teletubbies going to beds that were shaped like coffins
proposes a parallel to where Mado was going to spend her last moments, which is
emphasized by James telling Mado to Come to bed,...Just a rest, for a while, (236).
So, are duty and love really different things? Merriam Webster defines duty as
something that is done as part of a job; something that must be done because it is
morally right, and love as a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person. James

44. The Socioeconomic And Economic Status And Upward
Mobility...
Amer Alhammadi ASB 202 4) There are many differences in the average socio and
economic status and upward mobility of second generation immigrant minorities
when compared to their parents who are first generation immigrants. A lot of this can
be attributed to different rates of cultural assimilation and there are many different
factors that come into play when dealing with an analysis of cultural assimilation and
what is the most and second most important factor to be successful in the
assimilation. We talk about generations and looking at the study of different
generations this is something that anthropologists are very interested in doing. As the
United States continues to have more and more immigrants entering the country there
are consistently new first generations that academic scholars can look to study. One
of the most exciting areas of study for those interested in the anthropology of
assimilation is to take a look at the Hispanic community who in many cases are third
generation or getting into the third generation. When looking at first generation as
compared to second generation there s a big question as to whether second generation
is compared to third generation is going to look the same, look different, or
somewhere in between. Relationships between generations is something that is very
significant in any community but in the Hispanic community there are some specific
norms and customs that parents would like the children to continue on with well the
children
45. Dan Buettner s Chapter On Singapore
Dan Buettner s chapter on Singapore was very interesting, especially when
comparing it to our American way of life. At first glance the idea of living in a
country with very strict laws, such as public canings for what we would call a
minor offense, was mind blowing to me. How could this be one of the happiest
places in the world? Upon further study my mind was changed to some degree, in
fact I could see myself visiting there some day, but only have studing on the most
current laws. I think the United Stateswould be better off if we as a nation thought
more about how our individual actions affected those around us. If you were to
visit Singapore, it is highly advised that you first take time and review both their
customs and strict laws. This country is not like any other country you have been to
before. From the time you arrive at Changi International Airport, this difference is
very apparent. You will see go through customs and or immigration, normal and
typical when arriving to a new country, but that is where the similarities end. You
will see numerous signs warning you of the public laws, that you are expected to
obey without question. No photography, smoking, or gum chewing is allowed
(Buettner, 2011, p. 75). Think for a minute how odd this might be. You have just
arrived as a visitor and you cannot chew gum and you are not allowed to take
photographs!? After some further research I have found that this law of gum chewing
has been modified to some degree.
