Facts on Irn Bru
Was first made in 1901
It’s known as Scotland's other national drink
Best selling soft drink in Scotland and third top in the Uk as a
whole, behind Cocoa Cola and Pepsi.
Recipe is secret which has been handed down generation.
Only 3 people know about the recipe
Originally became popular because sanitation was poor at the
time and it was considered to be a healthy way to boost your
energy.
It was called Iron Brew but the name changed in 1947
In 2012 it was forced to carry a warning that it may cause
hyperactivity in children.
In 2014 the drink was banned from Canada because it was
additive.
McDonald’s in Scotland offers Irn Bru after an initial backlash
when the fast food chain launched in the country
Client research:
The Snowman advert for Irn Bru is the most memorable
advert on TV, this is because it’s the funniest Christmas
advert because of what the use of the lyrics. I would
class this advert as a comedy and homour this is
because the way the advert is advertised is good
because the Snowman is a popular advert even without
Irn Bru theme to it. So by Irn Bru using the snowman
advert it helps advertise it to everyone because of it
being popular around Christmas. Its also good because
they can also advertise the advert in winter time so
people don’t forget about it when it gets to the colder
seasons.
Client research:
Irn Bru advertise their products in a funny way, which
leads to people remembering them because they’re
funny. They also have strange pictures to the adverts like
the ones on the left with the animals etc.. I would class
these advert as comedy and homour as well as the other
on which is good as there is a theme for the products Irn
Br. It could also class as the nature and the nature world
as in some of the images there is animals like a ferret,
bird, donkey and a monkey, people might see this and
like it as they might like these type of animals.
They also like to use adult humour to them so it makes it
funny to the older people to attract them where a kid
wouldn’t really understand. Also because its not really
for children they purposely made it have adult humour
so it makes the audience think its for adults.
Can also notice that the colour scheme matches the
design of the can as it has the orange background and
blue writing.
Client research:
They also used funny adverts for example the one with the mum
and the 3 boys, the son drinks the Irn Bru to helps him with the
situations that is happening in the advert.
Another advert is when the baby is born in hospital and the dad
asks what the name is for the baby and he drinks the Irn Bru to
help with the name they picked as it wasn’t a good one.
In all the videos they like to adverts Irn Bru in a way it helps you
in situations that are awkward or something they particularly
don’t like. By them doing this it advertises that it fixes problems
and makes them agree or like the idea of it all.
This advert is to entertain the
audience watching, this could be
classed as a dream and fantasy as the
sons friends seem distracted by the
women. Where the son took a drink
of Irn Bru and went along with it all.
Market research:
What market is your client part of?
The clients market is soft drinks, meaning that it aims
for any age to drink the fizzy drinks. By it appealing to
all ages the target audience is fairly easy to advertise
as everyone will be interested however the primary
audience is mostly younger people for example in
their teenage years.
Who is their competition?
As you can see on the left there is the 15 top soft
drinks and the most popular ones are;
- Coca-Cola
- Diet coke
- red Bull
- Pepsi
Market research:
Coca Cola compared to Irn Bru, I feel that with
Coca Cola the adverts are more about happiness
as most of the adverts are about helping people.
For example in these two pictures where it says
‘no one likes u’ then coca cola changes it to
‘there’s no one like u’ it shows that they want
everyone to have self-importance and pride which
is a positive thing to have where with Irn Bru its
mostly all funny adverts which is good as it makes
people laugh but Coca Cola has happy adverts and
funny ones and self importance. For example with
the funny side to Coca Cola, the one at the bottom
where it says ‘YOU HAD FOUR YEARS’ when the
football was on everyone forgot to get drinks so
they had to go and get a drink while the game was
on. Which shows comedy and humour.
Audience research:
Irn bru age group that tend to normally drink the drink are a
younger customer as young people prefer fizzy drinks where
with the older audience might not like sugary drinks. I also
think that younger audience like fizzy drinks because they
want to have energy for the day as younger people don’t get
enough sleep.
The customers that tend to buy the drink are mostly male
because I personally think that Irn Bru aimed it at males for
the colour theme they picked as the bottles are blue and
orange where females might not particularly like them colours
so they tend to not buy the product.
Audience research:
Amy
1. What is your favourite Irn Bru advert and why?
2. The snowman one because it has stayed in my memory for a long time it also was a humorous advert at the
time
3. What is your favourite Irn Bru slogan why?
4. I'm a total mad ferret because I really like animals and I think this associates humor with animals.
5. What is your opinion on Irn Bru colour scheme?
I think that it is good that they incorporate the colour scheme of the brand into the adverts as it makes people
more aware what the advert is advertising.
