Computer simulation is used to predict the residual stresses and distortion of a full-float truck axle that has been
induction scan hardened. Flux2D® is used to model the electromagnetic behavior and the power distributions inside
the axle in terms of time. The power distributions are imported and mapped into DANTE® model for thermal, phase
transformation and stress analysis. The truck axle has three main geometrical regions: the flange/fillet, the shaft, and the spline. Both induction heating and spray quenching processes have significant effect on the quenching results:
distortion and residual stress distributions. In this study, the effects of spray quenching severity on residual stresses and distortion are investigated using modeling. The spray quenching rate can be adjusted by spray nozzle design, ratio of polymer solution and quenchant flow rate. Different quenching rates are modeled by assigning different heat transfer coefficients as thermal boundary conditions during spray quenching.
Numerical and experimental study of a solar water heater for enhancement in t...eSAT Journals
Abstract
Largest commercial application amongst the various solar collectors is the solar flat plate collectors mainly due to its simple design as well as low maintenance cost. Numerical analysis of the solar water heater which involves conduction and convection due to radiation heat transfer using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) as a tool has not been the focus of study so far. It is generally understood that sinusoidal flow passage tends to increase turbulence which in turn increases convective heat transfer. The advantage of using straight absorber tube over sinusoidal absorber tube on the thermal behavior of the solar water heater needs to be explored as a design prescription. In the study presented in this paper it is noted from the experimental and numerical analysis that the straight tube configuration has better performance than that of sinusoidal pipe configuration.

Numerical analysis of heat sinks for led lighting moduleseSAT Journals
Abstract
LEDs provide efficient lighting solutions. Their main advantages are efficiency, reliability and durability. Although LEDs operate cooler than conventional incandescent bulbs, it is necessary to achieve maximum heat transfer in order to maintain or improve their efficiency and lifespan. Heat sinks in LED modules provide a path for heat to flow from the source to the outside ambience. Heat sinks with different fin geometries are analyzed to determine its influence on thermal performance and airflow around the fins. By comparing different fin geometries, the thermal performance and airflow are compared and analyzed. It was found that the airfoil fins with reverse orientation offers the minimum resistance. Airfoil is the most commonly used shape in applications where aerodynamics is of major importance.

A non-linear finite element method was utilized to determine the stress state of the blade segment under operating conditions. High stress zones were found at the region of the lower fir-tree slot, where the failure occurred. A computation was also performed with excessive rotational speed. Attention of this study is devoted to the mechanisms of damage of the turbine blade and also the critical high stress areas.
Experimentation on heat pipe and cfd analysis for performance enhancementeSAT Journals
Abstract
Heat Pipe is a heat transfer device used in many applications and it is very similar in some respects to the thermosyphon. Since there were several limitations of thermosyphon, heat pipe was developed. The idea of the heat pipe was first suggested in 1942, since then over a several decades the serious development of a heat pipe took place. Heat pipe mainly consists of three regions viz. evaporator, adiabatic and condenser section. The heat pipe differs from the thermosyphon by virtue of its ability to transport heat against gravity by an evaporation-condensation cycle. This research work includes experimentation on available heat pipe, development of CFD model and its validation with experimental results using CFD Tool. The results obtained by CFD are in good agreement with an experimental results. Since the heat pipe is used for transferring the heat, this research work focuses on increasing the heat transfer by modified model, modifications in terms of increased surface area, is proposed. From CFD analysis it was found that the proposed modified heat pipe shows enhancement in performance in terms of heat transfer rate by 19% when it is simulated for without heat sink case and 45% while with heat sink case, compared to conventional heat pipe. The mixture multiphase model from CFD too is used for simulation of heat pipe.
Structural and Thermal Analysis of Metal - Ceramic Disk BrakeIJSRD
Disk brakes are using from so many years in automotive and still researches are going on in this field for decreasing the temperature effect so that by this we can operate easily. Many new materials are introduced for the disk brake rotor to withstand high temperature produced during braking action. Apart from the high temperature property, the disc rotor materials must also have high thermal conductivity property, as this property decides the amount of heat dissipation to the air stream from the disk rotor. A brake material with good temperature and high thermal conductivity property gives maximum efficiency by overcoming the problem of thermo-mechanical instability [TEI] in the rotor which is more common in low thermal conductivity brake rotor material. In the present work, a Grey cast iron material and metal-ceramic has been chosen for the disk brake rotor. Number of methods before already introduced to know the history of the different materials related to disk brakes, analysis will be done in 2d and 3d in analytical and numerical methods. With different types of assumptions these numerical methods ranges from finite differences to finite elements. To conclude the temperature history for the Grey cast iron material, and metal-ceramic, a numerical simulation technique called finite element method is used. Transient analysis is carried out in ANSYS to predict temperature distribution as a function of time in the disk brake rotor. The results from the transient analysis are compared. As the brake rotor can be treated as the coupled field problem, it is mandatory to do structural analysis after performing thermal analysis in ANSYS to study the stability and rigidity behavior of the rotor material. The results from the transient analysis are given as the input to the structural analysis in order to conclude the stress distribution and displacement in disk brake rotor under thermal loading. The stability behavior of different brake rotor material is compared to facilitate the conceptual design of the disk brake system.

Remaining life assessment of refinery furnace tubes using finite element methodBarhm Mohamad
Crude oil heater 9Cre-1Mo steel tubes from a refinery plant were studied, after 5 years of service at nominally 650 Cº and 3 bar, to predict their remnant lives. The investigation included dimensional, hardness and tensile measurements in addition to accelerated stress rupture tests between 650 Cº and 700 Cº and microstructural examination. Tube specimens were taken from two sections, the overheated side and the side which only saw the nominal operating temperature. The method employed involved the prediction of the increase in temperature with increasing sediment deposition during the operating life times using an FEM model. In addition the predicted temperatures are used to derive appropriate creep properties at relevant temperatures in a 3D pipe FEM creep analysis to predict the pipe deformation rate. All compare well with the actual service exposed pipe measurements and layer deposition. The overheated side revealed a small loss of creep strength in a stress rupture test. A layer of sediment (appr. 10 mm thickness) consisting basically of sintered carbon (coke) spread over the inside of the tube was acting as a thermal barrier causing the temperature to rise above 650 Cº. Analysis for the overheated side predicted an upper bound temperature of 800 Cº and a life of about 50 h suggesting that failure by creep rupture could occur rapidly in the sediment region.
Experimental Investigation of Heat Transfer Using “Twisted Aluminium Tape”IJERA Editor
Heat exchanger has a wide industrial and engineering applications. Increasing the efficiency of heat exchanger will increase the overall performance of the unit. This paper is about increasing the heat transfer coefficient of heat exchanger by causing a turbulence in the liquid flow through the pipe. For causing the turbulence, liquid flow is subjected to a Twisted Aluminium Tape (TAT) which will increase the Reynolds number of flow. This will ensure heat transfer through the length of flow and thus there will be an increased heat transfer rate. The increased turbulence and higher shear caused by Twisted Aluminium Tape (TAT) will offer resistance to fouling also. KEY ]
Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.
