This document describes the design of a brushless DC motor for use in a solar powered water pumping system. Key points: - A 0.3 hp BLDC motor was designed to operate from a single 300 Wp solar panel to pump water in remote areas without electricity. - The motor was optimized for high efficiency of over 80% at rated load through the use of neodymium magnets and distributed winding on the stator. - Testing showed the BLDC motor achieved higher discharge rates and efficiency compared to an equivalent PMDC motor, making it more suitable for solar water pumping. - The optimized design improved performance over a wide range of operating conditions from low to high solar irradiation
