Cuprous oxide rectifier was invented in 1926 and was used for the rectification of power supply frequencies. Selenium rectifier was invented in 1933 and it was also used for the rectification of power frequencies but selenium rectifier was more efficient and was best in low-voltage, heavy current applications. Commercial manufacturing of germanium crystal diode was started in 1946. This paper presents a bridgeless Cuk converter-fed brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive. A Bridgeless Cuk converter is constructed to operate at discontinuous inductor current mode to improve the quality of power and power factor at the AC mains for better speed control. The bridgeless converter is designed for obtaining the low conduction losses and requirement of low size of heat sink for the switches. TI-TMS320-F2812-based Digital Signal Processor (DSP) is used for the development of the hardware prototype of proposed BLDC motor drive.
Now day’s the power factor has become a major problem in power system to improve the power quality of the grid, as power factor is affected on the grid due to the nonlinear loads connected to it. Single phase bridgeless AC/DC power factor correction (PFC) topology to improve the power factor as well as the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the utility grid is proposed. By removing the input bridge in conventional PFC converters, the control circuit is simplified; the total harmonics distortion (THD) and power factor (PF) are improved. The PI controller operates in two loops one is the outer control loop which calculates the reference current through LC filter and signal processing. Inner current loop generates PWM switching signals through the PI controller. The output of the proposed PFC topology is verified for prototype using MATLAB circuit simulations. The experimental system is developed, and the simulation results are obtained.
In this paper, three different impedance source inverters: Z-source inverter, EZ- source inverter, TZ-Source for wind energy conversion system (WECS) were investigated. Total output power and THD of each of these systems are calculated. The proposed system can boost the output voltage effectively when the low output voltage of the generator is available at low wind speed. This system has higher performance, less components, increased efficiency and reduced cost. These features make the proposed TZSI based system suitable for the wind conversion systems. MATLAB simulink model for wind generator system is developed and simulation studies are successfully performed. The simulation is done using MATLAB and the simulation results are presented. This comparison shows that the TZ-source inverter is very promising for wind energy conversion system.

converter topologies suitable for telecoms. A novel integrated PFC topology is proposed which acts
as a backup power supply for telecommunication systems. The advantage of the proposed circuit is
that it operates based on soft switching principle thereby reducing the switching losses in the
converter. The topologies analyzed in this paper are conventional average current mode control
boost PFC, bridgeless boost PFC, semi-bridgeless boost PFC, totem-pole bridgeless boost PFC and
proposed integrated boost PFC. All these topology studies are investigated by carrying out the
simulation of the converter circuits using PSIM software. A detailed comparison of all the
topologies have been done and they are compared in terms of supply power factor, supply current
THD and displacement factor. From the results, it is inferred that the proposed integrated PFC
provides a reduced supply current THD and improved power factor. The results are validated.

A Comparative Study of Various AC-DC Converters for Low Voltage Energy Harves...paperpublications3
Abstract: Electromagnetic microscale and mesoscale power generators with low voltage outputs are now widely used as kinetic energy harvesters. The extrinsic vibrations on the generator can excite the internal oscillations between the proof mass magnet and the electrical damper coils. These oscillations produce a periodically varying magnetic flux in coil, inducing a corresponding AC output voltage. This output can be converted to dc and can be used to supply power to electronic loads. The conventional AC-DC converters for energy harvesting system with diode rectifiers suffer considerable voltage drop resulting increase in power loss of circuitry and complexity. As a remedy various bridgeless boost converters were designed and implemented. Standard H bridge converter with 4 switch or 2 switch, dual polarity boost converters, parallel combination of boost and buck-boost converter, integrated boost and buck-boost combination bridgeless rectifier are some of these. These circuits are studied, simulated and compared. The simulation models are drawn and simulated using MATLAB R2010a.
A Low Cost Single-Switch Bridgeless Boost PFC ConverterIJPEDS-IAES
This paper proposes the single-switch bridgeless boost power factor correction (PFC) converter to achieve high efficiency in low cost. The proposed converter utilizes only one active switching device forPFC operation as well as expecting higher efficiency than typical boost PFC converters. On the other hand, the implementation cost is less than traditional bridgeless boost PFC converters, in where two active switching deivces are necessary. The operational principle, the modeling, and the control scheme of the proposed converter arediscussed in detail. In order to verify the operation of the proposed converter, a 500W switching model is built in PSIM software package. The simulation results show that the proposed converter perfectly achieves PFC operation with only a single active switch.

Based on this concept, the project is developed to transfer power within a small range. This project can be used for charging batteries those are physically not possible to be connected electrically such as pace makers (An electronic device that works in place of a defective heart valve) implanted in the body that runs on a battery.
The patient is required to be operated every year to replace the battery. This project is designed to charge a rechargeable battery wirelessly for the purpose. Since charging of the battery is not possible to be demonstrated, we are providing a DC fan that runs through wireless power.
This project is built upon using an electronic circuit which converts AC 230V 50Hz to AC 12V, High frequency. The output is fed to a tuned coil forming as primary of an air core transformer. The secondary coil develops a voltage of HF 12volt.
Thus the transfer of power is done by the primary(transmitter) to the secondary that is separated with a considerable distance(say 3cm). Therefore the transfer could be seen as the primary transmits and the secondary receives the power to run load.
Moreover this technique can be used in number of applications, like to charge a mobile phone, iPod, laptop battery, propeller clock wirelessly. And also this kind of charging provides a far lower risk of electrical shock as it would be galvanically isolated.

ethodology for determining the parameters of hightemperature superconducting...IJECEIAES
This paper substantiates a new adaptive method for determining parameters of high-temperature superconducting power transformers with current limiting function. The main focus is the design of current-limiting superconducting windings in the light of new restrictions on current density, magnetic induction, critical current and critical temperature. The presented method considers the nature of alternating current (AC) losses in a superconductor under nominal operating conditions, features of the dielectric medium (liquid nitrogen), as well as the reduced values of the short-circuit voltage (0.5 to 1.5%). The main design features of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) transformers are specified, and a prototype of a three-phase HTS transformer of 63 kVA with a short-circuit current limiting function is developed. It is shown that HTS units have some advantages over conventional transformers: a 90 to 95% active losses reduction, short-circuit current limitation function, explosion and fire safety, a 60% reduction in weight and size, and increased efficiency (up to 99.8%). Experimental studies confirm that the short-circuit current limitation function is safe and efficient. It is demonstrated that during the short-circuit current limitation, significant heat flows occur on the windings, which should not exceed the critical value above which the superconductor could not return to the superconducting state by itself.

Design Approach To High Voltage High Power Steam-Turbine Driven AlternatorIJPEDS-IAES
The paper deals with the design methodology of high voltage high power
alternators driven by steam turbines. These alternators run at a high speed of
3000 rpm in most part of the world (at 3600 rpm in USA) and are of
cylindrical pole construction. The design procedure suggested in the textbooks
of design does not well-suit for large alternators of modern time.
Modern high power alternators are designed with a low value of SCR to
reduce the size, inertia and cost of the rotor. The diameter is limited by the
consideration of centrifugal stresses. The no.of stator slots are determined by
the no. of turns. The ventilating circuit has to be designed for hydrogen as
coolant and in addition with water flowing through hollow conductors, if
required. The data for the design variables and the design constraints are
quite different from those for small power ratings. The materials to be chosen
must be of very high quality. The computer programme has been chalked out
and the case-study has been conducted keeping all these points in view.
This paper proposes a non-isolated soft-switching bidirectional dc/dc converter for interfacing energy storage in DC microgrid. The proposed converter employs a half-bridge boost converter at input port followed by a LCC resonant tank to assist in soft-switching of switches and diodes, and finally a voltage doubler circuit at the output port to enhance the voltage gain by two times. The LCC resonant circuit also adds a suitable voltage gain to the converter. Therefore, overall high voltage gain of the converter is obtained without a transformer or large number of multiplier circuit. For operation in buck mode, the high side voltage is divided by half with capacitive divider to gain higher step-down ratio. The converter is operated at high frequency to obtain low output voltage ripple, reduced magnetics and filters. Zero voltage turn-on is achieved for all switches and zero current turn-on and turn-off is achieved for all diodes in both modes i.e., buck/boost operation. Voltage stress across switches and diode is clamped naturally without external snubber circuit. An experimental prototype has been designed, built and tested in the laboratory to verify the performance of the proposed converter.
A Study of Superconducting Transformer with Short-Circuit Current Limitation IJECEIAES
The paper presents physico-mathematical models for analyzing transient processes in electrical networks having transformers with a high temperature superconducting winding. One of the main purposes of the study is the investigation of the short circuit current limitation process with the use of a transformer with a high temperature superconducting winding, that allows the combination of two series-connected elements, transformer and reactor, in one device. The efficiency of this method for short circuit current limitation is provided by the fact that the critical value of superconducting winding temperature is exceeded under short circuit current flowing, then it passes into the normal state with a high impedance winding, thus limiting a short circuit current. It is important to know the moment when superconducting material passes into the normal state with the loss of superconductivity. For this purpose, the program for calculating the quantity of heat under short circuit current flowing before its interruption was developed. If a 40 MVA transformer with a high temperature superconducting winding is considered, short circuit should be cleared after 100 ms without transformer disconnection. It is proposed to use a hybrid winding in addition to the main winding for short circuit current limitation. Conducted investigations showed that the return of a winding into the superconducting state depends primarily on the ratio between a short circuit current and a rated load current. This represents the criterion for returning or not returning into the superconducting state for transformer windings.

Towards More Reliable Renewable Power Systems - Thermal Performance Evaluatio...IJPEDS-IAES
Power electronic converters (PECs) are one of the most important elements
within renewable power generation systems. The reliability of switching
elements of PECs is still below expectations and is a major contributor to the
downtime of renewable power generation systems. Conventional technology
based elements such as Silicon Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs)
operate as switching components in PECs. Recent topological improvements
have led to new devices called Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFETs which, are
also being used as switching elements for PECs. This paper presents detailed
investigations into the performance of those switching devices with a focus
on their reliability and thermal characteristics. Namely, trench gate NPT, FS
IGBT topologies and SiC MOSFET are firstly modelled using 3-D multiphysics
finite element modelling to gain clear understanding of their thermal
behaviour. Subsequently, modelling outcomes are verified by using those
devices as switching elements in operational boost converters. The
purposely-developed test setups are utilised to critically assess the
performances of those switching devices under different loading and
environmental conditions. In general, SiC device was found to exhibit about
20 °C less in its operating temperature and therefore expected to offer more
reliable switching element.
This paper addresses the approach to improve the efficiency of the quasi Z-source inverter. In order to increase the efficiency the reduction of conduction losses is one way to approach. Sequentially to decrease the conduction losses in the quasi z-source inverter the replacement of diode is replacing with switches is proposed which is also called as synchronous rectification. The paper represents basics of the approach, analysis and comparison of the power losses of the traditional and proposed designs of the grid connected PV-system with quasi z-source inverter system. The proposed approach validated on the computer simulations in the MATLAB environment.
Solid-State Transformer (S2T) also known as Power Electronic Transformer (PET) is applied in various industrial fields compared to the conventional transformer due to it flexible voltage transfer ratio, high power density, and low harmonic distortion. This paper presents the S2T of Single Phase Matrix Converter (SPMC) that acts as cyclo-converter. A 1kHz frequency was synthesized on the primary side of the transformer using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique, whilst, the output converted by the SPMC that produces the 50Hz frequency. A part of AC to AC operation, the switching algorithm for safe-commutation technique is also presented to solve the commutation problem caused by the usage of inductive load. Minimization of size, losses and optimal efficiency are the advantages of this approach. The proposed model was simulated by using MATLAB/Simulink (MLS).

NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER IN CONDENSING HEAT EXCHANGERS...ssuser7dcef0
Power plants release a large amount of water vapor into the
atmosphere through the stack. The flue gas can be a potential
source for obtaining much needed cooling water for a power
plant. If a power plant could recover and reuse a portion of this
moisture, it could reduce its total cooling water intake
requirement. One of the most practical way to recover water
from flue gas is to use a condensing heat exchanger. The power
plant could also recover latent heat due to condensation as well
as sensible heat due to lowering the flue gas exit temperature.
Additionally, harmful acids released from the stack can be
reduced in a condensing heat exchanger by acid condensation. reduced in a condensing heat exchanger by acid condensation.
Condensation of vapors in flue gas is a complicated
phenomenon since heat and mass transfer of water vapor and
various acids simultaneously occur in the presence of noncondensable
gases such as nitrogen and oxygen. Design of a
condenser depends on the knowledge and understanding of the
heat and mass transfer processes. A computer program for
numerical simulations of water (H2O) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
condensation in a flue gas condensing heat exchanger was
developed using MATLAB. Governing equations based on
mass and energy balances for the system were derived to
predict variables such as flue gas exit temperature, cooling
water outlet temperature, mole fraction and condensation rates
of water and sulfuric acid vapors. The equations were solved
using an iterative solution technique with calculations of heat
and mass transfer coefficients and physical properties.
