This document compares different control strategies for exchanging frequency support between AC power systems connected by a multi-terminal HVDC grid. It studies synthetic inertia control using frequency derivative input, classical frequency droop control, and an integrated synthetic inertia emulation control scheme. Time domain simulations show the impact of these controls on both HVDC grid voltage response and AC system frequency stability. Frequency droop control improves one AC system's frequency at the cost of disturbance to the other. Integrated synthetic inertia emulation control facilitates primary frequency reserve exchange similarly to droop control. The control strategies allow artificial coupling of HVDC-connected AC systems for frequency support.

Abstract This paper presents a line commutated converter (LCC) based multi-terminal HVDC transmission (MTDC) system feeding very weak AC networks with hybrid reactive power compensators (RPC’s) at the inverter AC side. The hybrid compensator is accomplished by the equal mixing of any two of the following compensators: synchronous compensator (SC); static var compensator (SVC); static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). The four-terminal HVDC transmission system model is implemented in the Matlab with the firefly algorithm based optimal proportional integral (PI) controller for rectifiers and inverters control. The transient performances of hybrid RPC’s (SC+SVC, SVC+STATCOM and SC+STATCOM) are studied under various fault conditions and the results are compared with the performance of the SC, SVC and STATCOM to focus the high quality of the hybrid compensators. The simulation results authorize that the equivalent mixture of SC and STATCOM has a steady and fastest response. The results also reveal the supremacy of the firefly algorithm based optimal PI controller over the conventional PI controller. The harmonic present in the inverter side AC quantities is also calculated under steady state operation to assure the quality of power supply. Multiterminal High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission utilizing Line Commutated Converter (LCC-HVDC) technology is on the increase in interconnecting a remote generating station to any urban centre via long distance DC lines. This Multiterminal-HVDC (MTDC) system offers a reduced right of way benefits, reduction in transmission losses, as well as robust power controllability with enhanced stability margin. However, utilizing the MTDC system in an AC network bring about a new area of associated fault analysis as well as the effect on the entire AC system during a transient fault condition. This paper analyses the fault current contribution of an MTDC system during transient fault to the rotor angle of a synchronous generator. The results show a high rotor angle swing during a transient fault and the effectiveness of fast power system stabilizer connected to the generator automatic voltage regulator in damping the system oscillations. The MTDC link improved the system performance by providing an alternative path of power transfer and quick system recovery during transient fault thus increasing the rate at which the system oscillations were damped out. This shows great improvement compared to when power was being transmitted via AC lines.

This paper presents an active-reactive power control strategy for voltage source converters (VSCs) based on derivation of the direct and quadrature components of the VSC output current. The proposed method utilizes a multivariable proportional-integral controller and provides almost completely decoupled control capability of the active and reactive power with almost full disturbance rejection due to step changes in the power exchanged between the VSC and the grid. It also imposes fast transient response and zero steady-state error as compared to the conventional power control approaches. The applicability of the proposed power control strategy for providing the robust stability of the system against the uncertainties of the load parameters is also investigated. The superiority of the proposed control strategy over conventional approaches in the new condition of supplying the load is demonstrated. The theoretical aspects of the proposed multivariable-based power control strategy and the conventional approaches are reviewed and simulation results are presented in two separate sections. In this paper adaptive zone-based Volt/VAR management is proposed, which coordinates active
participation of DGs with conventional voltage regulation equipment. To achieve a flexible and scalable
solution while minimizing complexity and requirements for data-handling capability, DG management
systems are integrated with decentralized parts of the Volt/VAR management system in smaller
geographical zones. Coordination of DGs with conventional voltage regulation equipment is based on
predefined control hierarchies. However, to reduce requirements for data handling capability, the distribution
grid is divided into zones with individual voltage regulation and reactive support schemes. To add flexibility
and scalability, these zones can be combined into larger zones with a common Volt/VAR management

Power Quality Improvement in Power System using UPFCijtsrd
Occurrence of a fault in a power system causes transients. To stabilize the system, Power System Stabilizer (PSS) and Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) are used. Load flow analysis is done to analyze the transients introduced in the system due to the occurrence of faults. The Flexible Alternating Current Transmission (FACTS) devices such as UPFC are becoming important in suppressing power system oscillations and improving system damping. The UPFC is a solid-state device, which can be used to control the active and reactive power. This paper considers a power system as a case study for investigating the performance of UPFC is achieving stability. By using a UPFC the oscillation introduced by the faults, the voltage deviations and speed deviations can be damped out quickly than a system without a UPFC. The effectiveness of UPFC in suppressing power system oscillation is investigated by analyzing their voltage deviations and reactive power support in this paper. A proportional integral (PI) controller has been employed for the UPFC. It is also shown that a UPFC can control independently the real and reactive power flow in a transmission line. A New Control Method for Grid-Connected PV System Based on Quasi-Z-Source Cas...IAES-IJPEDS
In this paper, a new control method for quasi-Z-source cascaded multilevel inverter based grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system is proposed. The proposed method is capable of boosting the PV array voltage to a higher level and solves the imbalance problem of DC-link voltage in traditional cascaded H-bridge inverters. The proposed control system adjusts the grid injected current in phase with the grid voltage and achieves independent maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for the separate PV arrays. To achieve these goals, the proportional-integral (PI) controllers are employed for each module. For achieving the best performance, this paper presents an optimum approach to design the controller parameters using particle swarm optimization (PSO). The primary design goal is to obtain good response by minimizing the integral absolute error. Also, the transient response is guaranteed by minimizing the overshoot, settling time and rise time of the system response. The effectiveness of the new proposed control method has been verified through simulation studies based on a seven level quasi-Z- Source cascaded multilevel inverter.

the wind energy generation, utilization and its grid penetration in electrical grid are increasing worldwide. The
integration of wind energy into the power system is to minimize the environmental impact on conventional plant but the injection
of the wind power into an electric grid affects the power quality. The wind generated power is always fluctuating due to its time

of the wind turbine in the grid system concerning the power quality measurements are-the active power, reactive power, variation

This paper proposes a dynamic power decoupling DPD strategy for the three phase grid tied PV power system without increasing the dc link capacitance. Under normal condition, the interleaved boost converter will extract the maximum power point MPP from the PV array and the three phase inverter will inject the power to the grid. During the unbalanced grid fault scenario, the input power and current of the interleaved boost converter will be controlled by the proposed DPD to achieve the power decoupling capability as well as to eliminate the dc link voltage oscillation. Transient Stability is the capability of a system to be able to return to its normal state after experiencing large disturbances. The static var compensator (SVC) is a shunt device of the flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) family using power electronics to improve transient stability in power system. For the SVC control, it is usually used a PI controller, although PI controller is simpler and cheaper but not suitable when power system is subjected to transient stability since power system become non-linear system. In order to overcome this problem, the PI controller combined with Fuzzy controller is designed. Two types of faults were considered for this study to examine the effect of the fuzzy-SVC controller on system transient stability, the proposed fault types are single line to ground fault and three lines to ground fault. The performance and behavior of the designed fuzzy controller compared with that of the conventional PI controller in term of terminal voltage, rotor angle, and transmission line active power.

AC Grid Resilience Enhancement using VSM Control of HVDC Intertiesijtsrd
Inertia is one of the major concerns of our time these days, and visible inertia is seen as an inevitable part of the modern energy system of the future. This has been particularly important with the introduction of renewable energy grids low wind and solar , which have a very sensitive effect on the power supply. Recent research trends in various parts of today’s energy systems are directed at real world simulation methods, and many research projects have taught us this topic. In this paper, we measure frequency response by giving the result in visual inertia and frequency of the power grid when the conversion terminals are controlled as a virtual synchronizer VSM . It assesses the performance of visual inertia support by looking at the power system by examining the impact of synchronization control, downtime HVDC, and VSM HVDC control over frequency response. Note how VSM based HVDC controls provide internal support and improve recovery response frequency. The Power Factory Dig SILENT commercial software simulation introduces the same AC grid case connected to the HVDC transmission system modeled by default parameters. The results confirm the beneficial effect of virtual inertia support on frequency dynamics and how VSM based control significantly improves the nadir frequency nadir and frequency change response RoCoF compared to the traditional frequency reduction of HVDC connectors. The two-terminal HVDC technology based MTDC
(multi-terminal DC transmission) system has already been
applied in pratical projects and it has great potential for large
capacity and long distance power transmission. Reactive power
management design is a necessary part of system design, and it is
very important to ensure the stability and security of MTDC
transmission system. This paper introduces the
technical characteristics of the two-terminal HVDC technology
based MTDC system at first. Then the basic principle and
algorithm of reactive power management are discussesed in detail,
considering different operation modes, restriction conditions and
primary data needed. Next, the detailed calculation procedure is
described in this paper to calculate the switching order of reactive
power compensation equipment. At last, a study case of a
four-terminal parallel LCC-MTDC system is analyzed to prove
the validity of this algorithm.

Maximum power point tracking and space vector modulation control of quasi-z-s...IJECEIAES
The quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI) become one of the most promising power electronic converters for photovoltaic (PV) applications, due to its capability to perform a buck-boost conversion of the input voltage in a single stage. The control strategy based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and proportional integral (PI) controller are well known in grid-connected with traditional configuration but not in qZSI. This paper presents a control strategy for qZSI grid-connected based on the MPPT algorithm and the linear control by PI controllers. This is complemented by the capability to efficiently transfer the harvested power to the grid, ensuring a unity power factor. The proposed control strategy effectively separates the control mechanisms for the direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) sides by utilizing the two control variables, the shoot-through duty ratio and the modulation index. An adapted space vector modulation technique is then utilized to generate the switching pulse width modulation (PWM) signals, using these two control variables as inputs. The proposed approach was tested and validated under MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS software.
Power quality optimization using a novel backstepping control of a three-phas...IJECEIAES
A novel nonlinear backstepping controller based on direct current (DC) link voltage control is proposed in three-phase grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to control the active and reactive power flow between the PV system and the grid with improved power quality in terms of pure sinusoidal current injection with lower total harmonic distortion (THD), as well as to ensure unity power factor, or to compensate for reactive power required by the load, i.e., the electrical grid. The output power of the PV array is supplied to the grid through a boost converter with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control and an inverter. Simulation results of the proposed controller show good robustness under nominal conditions, parameter variations, and load disturbances, which presents the main advantage of this controller as compared to an existing controller. The performance of this work was evaluated using a MATLAB/Simulink environment.

Implementation of DC voltage controllers on enhancing the stability of multi-...IJECEIAES
Because of the increasing penetration of intermittent green energy resources like offshore wind farms, solar photovoltaic, the multi-terminal DC grid using VSC technology is considered a promising solution for interconnecting these future energies. To improve the stability of the multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) network, DC voltage control strategies based on voltage margin and voltage droop technique have been developed and investigated in this article. These two control strategies are implemented in the proposed model, a ±400 kV meshed multi-terminal MTDC network based on VSC technology with four terminals during the outage converter. The simulation results include the comparison and analysis of both techniques under the outage converter equipped with constant DC voltage control, then the outage converter equipped with constant active power control. The simulation results confirm that the DC voltage droop technique has a better dynamic performance of power sharing and DC voltage regulation.
VSC BASED HVDC SYTEM DESIGN AND PROTECTION AGAINST OVER VOLTAGESIJERD Editor
High Voltage Direct Current system based on voltage source converter (VSC-HVDC) is becoming
more effective solution for offshore wind plants and supplying power to remote regions. In this paper, the
control of a VSC-based HVDC system (VSC-HVDC) is described. Based on this control strategy, appropriate
controllers utilizing PI controllers are designed to control the active and reactive power at each end station. The
operation performance of a voltage source converter (VSC) based HVDC (VSC-HVDC system) system is
explained under some characteristic faulted conditions with and without protection measures. A protection
strategy is proposed to enhance the continuous operation performance of the VSC-HVDC system. The strategy
utilizes a voltage chopper to suppress over-voltages on the DC side of the VSC. Digital simulation is done to
verify the validity of the proposed control strategy and protection strategy

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
