Power-Grid Load Balancing by Using Smart Home AppliancesValerio Aisa
Climate change is one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet, and can be mitigated by increasing the efficiency of the electric power generation and distribution system. Dynamic demand control is a low-cost technology that fosters better load balancing of the electricity grid, and thus enable savings on CO2 emissions at power plants. This paper discusses a practical and inexpensive solution for the implementation of dynamic demand control, based on a dedicated peripheral for a general-purpose microcontroller. Pre-production test of the peripheral has been carried out by emulating the actual microprocessor. Simulations have been carried out, to investigate actual efficacy of the proposed approach.
Effective Area and Power Reduction for Low-Voltage CMOS Image Sensor Based Ap...IJTET Journal
Abstract— This paper presents a novel CMOS image sensor (CIS) based on 45nm processing technology. It includes a single inverter time-to-threshold pulse width modulation circuitry, capable of operating under very low supply voltage. Conventional CMOS image sensors implemented using 130nm processing technology had many advantages. But in order to incorporate additional processing circuitry, the device density increases which results in degradation in the speed of operation. Scaling of physical MOS device dimensions improves both speed and density. The leakage associated with scaling could be eliminated by re-designing the circuit. As result area and power consumption could be reduced, which is demanded by portable imaging equipments.

Powerful business model for fixed wireless data using outdoor antennas - PaperAndre Fourie
Paper presented at the 2nd Africa Radio Comms Conference in Johannesburg - Nov 2015
By Andre Fourie
The revenue that can be generated by an LTE base station is influenced by the quality of the signal received by the customer premise equipment (CPE). Most CPE come with omni-directional indoor antennas, but have provision for the connection to external antennas.
Substituting the indoor antennas for directional outdoor antennas has a marked effect on the data transfer speeds of the network. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, outdoor antennas are physically larger than their indoor counterparts and thus have a higher gain. The increase in antenna gain translates directly to an increase in received signal strength. The second advantage is that the outdoor antenna sits in an environment that has much better propagating properties than the indoor antenna. Tests have shown that data speeds 3-5 times faster are possible using external antennas compared to indoor antennas.
It is shown, using a primitive financial model that fairly large financial gains can be made by equipping CPE devices with external antennas.

VLSI Design of Low Power High Speed 4 Bit Resolution Pipeline ADC In Submicro...VLSICS Design
Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are key design blocks and are currently adopted in many application fields to improve digital systems, which achieve superior performances with respect to analog solutions. Application such as wireless communication and digital audio and video have created the need for costeffective data converters that will achieve higher speed and resolution. Widespread usage confers great importance to the design activities, which nowadays largely contributes to the production cost in integrated circuit devices (ICs). Various examples of ADC applications can be found in data acquisition systems, measurement systems and digital communication systems also imaging, instrumentation systems. Since the ADC has a continuous, infinite –valued signal as its input, the important analog points on the transfer curve x-axis for an ADC are the ones that corresponding to changes in the digital output word. These input transitions determine the amount of INL and DNL associated with the converter. Hence, we have to considered all the parameters and improving the associated performance may significantly reduce the industrial cost of an ADC manufacturing process and improved the resolution and design specially power consumption . The paper presents a design of 4 bit Pipeline ADC with low power dissipation implemented in <0.18µm.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.
