After World War I, Britain established Iraq and installed a ruler friendly to them. In the 1950s, this ruler was overthrown by military leaders. In 1979, Saddam Hussein took control of Iraq and was a harsh ruler who limited freedoms and executed political enemies. Iraq invaded Iran in the 1980s, leading to a long and devastating war that killed hundreds of thousands on both sides. In 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, leading to the Persian Gulf War in which a US-led coalition drove Iraqi forces out of Kuwait in 1991.

The Iran-Iraq war lasted from 1980 to 1988 and was fought between Iran led by Khomeini and Iraq led by Saddam Hussein. It began when Iraq invaded Tehran by air with MiG-23s and MiG-21s after border skirmishes erupted near Qasr-e Shirin in September 1980. The war caused enormous economic, military, and social problems for both countries and nearly 300,000 Iranians and 375,000 Iraqis were killed or taken prisoner before a 1988 ceasefire. The war had no clear victor and both sides suffered greatly as a result of the almost 9 years of total conventional warfare.
The gulf war
The Gulf War was a U.N authorized coalition force led by the U.S. against Iraq in 1990-1991 after Iraq invaded Kuwait. Iraq was deeply in debt to Kuwait after the costly Iran-Iraq War and invaded Kuwait on August 2nd, 1990 after Kuwait refused to cancel Iraq's debts. The U.S.-led coalition included forces from 34 countries which launched a massive air and ground assault driving Iraqi forces out of Kuwait and imposing a ceasefire. The war had both immediate impacts like destabilizing Iraq's economy and long term effects such as major environmental damage and health issues for veterans.

Seismic waves
Deep underground, rocks are under constant pressure until the strain becomes too great and the rocks suddenly break, releasing seismic waves. These waves travel outward from the hypocenter in three types - P waves which push and pull, S waves which move sides to side, and L waves which cause surfaces to bob up and down. When recorded by a seismograph, the first indication of an earthquake is typically the P waves, followed by larger S waves, with surface L waves arriving last.

An earthquake is caused by the sudden movement of parts of the Earth's crust and results in shaking and trembling of the ground. There are over one million earthquakes each year, with around twenty having the potential to cause severe damage. Earthquakes are caused by faults in the Earth's crust, such as the San Andreas Fault in California where the land west of the fault moves north and the land east moves south. Underwater earthquakes can generate destructive tsunamis. The focus is the depth below the surface where the earthquake occurs, and the epicenter is directly above on the surface. Seismographs detect seismic waves that travel out from the epicenter, including fast P waves and slower S waves.

Pema Khandu, born on August 21, 1979, is an Indian politician and the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. He is the son of former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Dorjee Khandu. Pema Khandu assumed office as the Chief Minister in July 2016, making him one of the youngest Chief Ministers in India at that time.
