IPC Media 
 IPC Media is the former name of the current 
British publishing company Time inc. UK. IPC 
stands for International Publishing 
Corporation. The core company was founded 
in 1963 when three of the big names in 
magazine publishing at the time came 
together. The actual IPC Media company 
was founded in 1968. In 2001, IPC Media was 
brought out by Time inc, and was rebranded 
Time inc UK IN 2014. They publish magazines 
such as Marie Clair, NME, Uncut, and Now. 
They only publish 2 music magazines, NME 
and Uncut.
Bauer Media 
 Bauer Media was first founded in 1875, and is 
owned privately by various different 
generations of the Bauer family. They sell up 
to 38 million magazines each week. They also 
have their very own radio station which, in the 
past, has been moderately successful. Some 
of he magazines that they publish include the 
likes of Bella, Q, Take A Break That’s Life!, and 
Kerrang!. The music magazines that they 
publish are Kerrang!, Q, and Mojo.
BBC Magazines 
 BBC Magazines, (British Broadcasting 
Company Magazines), is owned by 
Immediate Media which has 11 million UK 
customers and 1 million subscribers. BBC 
Magazines has two main magazines – Top 
of the Pops and Good Food. Obviously, 
they only produce one music magazine, 
which is Top of the Pops.
Why would an institution want to 
publish more than one magazine? 
 An institution would want to publish more 
than one magazine to gain more profit. 
More magazines in differentiating genres, 
such as music and food, would increase 
the number of people in their target 
audience, thus meaning that they sell 
more magazines and receive more profit.
What are the advantages for a 
company of offering their audiences 
cross-media links? 
 There are a few advantages for magazine 
publishers to offering cross-media links to their 
audiences. One is that fact that it allows the 
publisher to build a relationship with the 
customer through tools such as Facebook 
and Twitter. Another advantage is that it 
provides people with more/further exposure 
to the magazine. This means that when they 
go to a shop, they are more likely to 
recognize and buy this magazine rather than 
a different one by a rival publisher.
Why is the study of institutions 
helpful? 
 The study of institutions is helpful as it 
allows a producers of a magazine to see 
what publisher would be the right one for 
them to publish their magazine with, 
based on their background and number 
of magazines already produced. Also, it 
allows them to look at the magazines of 
the same type that publishers may have 
already produced and see how well 
they’ve done.
What do you understand by the 
term ‘cross-media platforms’? 
 I understand the term ‘cross-media 
platforms’ to mean the availability of 
magazines on the internet, and their 
presence on social network sites such as 
Facebook and Twitter, increasing their 
exposure.
Which institution would you want to 
publish your magazine and why? 
 Out of the institutions that I have detailed in 
this PowerPoint, I would want the Bauer 
Media Group to publish my music magazine. 
This is due to the fact that they publish the 
most music magazines out of the three, 
meaning that they have experience in the 
sector. Also, the fact that they publish the 
most music magazines also means that they 
have gained already gained a following in 
this genre, and are a trusted brand, meaning 
that more magazines are likely to be sold.

Investigating Media Institutions

  • 2. IPC Media  IPC Media is the former name of the current British publishing company Time inc. UK. IPC stands for International Publishing Corporation. The core company was founded in 1963 when three of the big names in magazine publishing at the time came together. The actual IPC Media company was founded in 1968. In 2001, IPC Media was brought out by Time inc, and was rebranded Time inc UK IN 2014. They publish magazines such as Marie Clair, NME, Uncut, and Now. They only publish 2 music magazines, NME and Uncut.
  • 3. Bauer Media  Bauer Media was first founded in 1875, and is owned privately by various different generations of the Bauer family. They sell up to 38 million magazines each week. They also have their very own radio station which, in the past, has been moderately successful. Some of he magazines that they publish include the likes of Bella, Q, Take A Break That’s Life!, and Kerrang!. The music magazines that they publish are Kerrang!, Q, and Mojo.
  • 4. BBC Magazines  BBC Magazines, (British Broadcasting Company Magazines), is owned by Immediate Media which has 11 million UK customers and 1 million subscribers. BBC Magazines has two main magazines – Top of the Pops and Good Food. Obviously, they only produce one music magazine, which is Top of the Pops.
  • 5. Why would an institution want to publish more than one magazine?  An institution would want to publish more than one magazine to gain more profit. More magazines in differentiating genres, such as music and food, would increase the number of people in their target audience, thus meaning that they sell more magazines and receive more profit.
  • 6. What are the advantages for a company of offering their audiences cross-media links?  There are a few advantages for magazine publishers to offering cross-media links to their audiences. One is that fact that it allows the publisher to build a relationship with the customer through tools such as Facebook and Twitter. Another advantage is that it provides people with more/further exposure to the magazine. This means that when they go to a shop, they are more likely to recognize and buy this magazine rather than a different one by a rival publisher.
  • 7. Why is the study of institutions helpful?  The study of institutions is helpful as it allows a producers of a magazine to see what publisher would be the right one for them to publish their magazine with, based on their background and number of magazines already produced. Also, it allows them to look at the magazines of the same type that publishers may have already produced and see how well they’ve done.
  • 8. What do you understand by the term ‘cross-media platforms’?  I understand the term ‘cross-media platforms’ to mean the availability of magazines on the internet, and their presence on social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter, increasing their exposure.
  • 9. Which institution would you want to publish your magazine and why?  Out of the institutions that I have detailed in this PowerPoint, I would want the Bauer Media Group to publish my music magazine. This is due to the fact that they publish the most music magazines out of the three, meaning that they have experience in the sector. Also, the fact that they publish the most music magazines also means that they have gained already gained a following in this genre, and are a trusted brand, meaning that more magazines are likely to be sold.
