What kind of media
institution might
distribute your media
product and why?
What is a media institution?
A media institution is an organisation that deals with
the production, marketing, distribution, publishing and
regulation of a media product. Therefore, in this case I
have compared some institutions to see who I would
prefer to use as an institution for my magazine.
Bauer Media Group
Bauer Media Group is a multinational media company headquartered in
Hamburg, Germany which operates in 16 countries worldwide. Since the
company was founded in 1875, it has been privately owned and under
management by the Bauer family. Worldwide circulation of Bauer Media Group's
magazine titles amounts to 38 million magazines a week. I think my magazine
would be well distributed by the Bauer group due to the many years of
experience the institution has had. The fact that they’ve had a lot of experience
means that they are a popular institution meaning that my magazine would be
recognised by a lot of people. This means that my magazine would reach its
target audience via the institution.
Bauer Media’s slogan:
The fact that their slogan is “we think popular” further
highlights the fact that my magazine would be very well
known due to the company’s success over the years.
It also shows that the institution is very trustworthy.
Here is a grid of all
of the companies
distributed by
Bauer Media
As you can see there are many
different companies, and none
of which are pop magazines,
but most of the radio station
companies play pop music.
These radio stations are
4music, The Hits, Viking Fm
and Box television. These
companies contribute to pop
magazines due to the music
they supply. Also, if my
magazine was to become part
of the Bauer Media group it
wouldn’t be up against any
other pop magazines, meaning
there would be more
competition making my
magazine more successful and
also making it stand out.
Bauer Media’s Audience
Bauer Media Group’s audience consists of mainly music related companies in
various different countries. This is essential as it means that there will be
millions of people that are able to see the companies who are part of Bauer.
This means that both male and female people will see the companies which is
important as my magazine is aimed at both male and female people who are
interested in pop music.

IPC Media
IPC Media is the UK's leading consumer magazine and digital publisher. With
more than 60 iconic media brands, IPC creates content for multiple platforms,
across print, online, mobile, tablets and events. They engage with 26 million
UK adults - almost two thirds of UK women and over 40% of UK men. Their
award winning portfolio of websites reaches over 25 million global users
every month. The fact that this institution has such a mass audience, it shows
that if my magazine was to be part of this institution it would have millions of
purchases due to all the men and women. However, my magazine appeals to
mainly younger adults, meaning that with this institution it would target the
audience but not all of it.
Here is a grid of all
of the companies
distributed by IPC
Media
Again there is no pop
magazine in this grid,
meaning that if my
magazine was to become
part of IPC Media’s
institution it would stand
out from the rest as it
would be the only music
magazine.
EMAP International Limited
Emap International Limited (now known as Top Right Group) is a British media
company, specialising in the production of business-to-business magazines,
and the organisation of business events and conferences. EMAP ceased
publishing many magazines in its history; there was in particular a move away
from the computing genre during the mid-1990s.
Smash Hits
Smash Hits was one of the biggest pop music magazines, aimed at teenagers
and young adults and was originally published in the United Kingdom by
EMAP. It ran from 1978 to 2006 and was issued fortnightly for most of that
time. The name survives as a brand for a spin-off digital television channel
and website. A digital radio station was also available but shut on 5 August
2013. the fact that EMPAR were the ones that distributed Smash Hits shows
they are successful. Also, due to the fact the magazine is no longer running it
means that my magazine could replace it and become as popular.
Chosen Media Institution
The media institution that I have chosen is Bauer Media Group. My reason for
this s because I would be the only pop magazine within that institution
meaning I would not be competing against anyone in the same institution.
Also, due to the fact that Bauer Media Group also distributes many pop music
radio stations, it links to my magazine. Due to their experience within the
process of magazines and pop music (radio) it fits nicely with the genre of my
magazine meaning it would fit in with the rest of the products that Bauer
distributes.
How I want my product to be
distributed
I want my product to be distributed physically through being
purchased in shops. For example, I would want leading
successful supermarkets to distribute my product due to the fact
that they have millions of customers throughout the year,
meaning my product Is very likely to be purchased.
Due to miniaturization and portability, the way in which things are purchased have
changed. For example, instead of buying things physically, people now like to buy
things via smartphones and tablets, giving audiences a wider option of how to
purchase goods. This is now becoming very popular, therefore I would intend to have
my product distributed in this way too. Due to todays use of proliferation ad
convergence, people can now access things such as music magazines through portable
devices via apps for these products.
