QUESTION 3: WHAT KIND
OF MEDIA INSTITUTION
MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT AND
WHY?
I had stated in my magazine proposal that my intended publisher was
Bauer Media Group. However I have done some research in order to
make a decision on which publisher will be more suitable for my
magazine.
Bauer Media – One of the largest publishers that
were first found in 1875 and have been
operating since all over 16 countries. It is a
multinational media company that publishes 38
million magazines per week. Successful and
well-known published magazines by Bauer
include Q and Kerrang!.

IPC – One of the most well-known magazine
publishers in the UK selling over 350 million
copies of magazines every year. They have
been successful with magazines such as Teen
Now and Marie Claire.

CondeNast – A large mass media organisation,
operating worldwide with over 20 print and digital
publications. Magazines such as Vogue, Teen
Vogue and GQ are published by CondeNast

NatMag – (Now known as Hearst Magazines
UK) Was a magazine publisher company that
operated in the UK selling over 18 magazines
that included Cosmopolitan, Best and Coast
magazines.
INTENDED PUBLISHER
My intended publisher is still Bauer Media Group. I believe
they might distribute my media product because although my
media product has a similar style to magazines such as Q
magazine published by Bauer, it is more focused on different
genres such as Soul and R&B rather than just Indie on its
own, and Bauer Media does not have an existing magazine
as such.My target audience is also younger than Q’s
audience and there is a gap in the market for this. It also has
ownership of music channels such as 4Music and Smash
Hits and other successful TV channels where my media
product can be promoted on as reaching out to broadcast
media platforms show existing success and show that the
existing success will be likely to continue for new and
upcoming magazines such as my magazine Soul Navy.
DISTRIBUTION
Bauer Media uses the Sale or Return method which I also think
is a useful method as it is a good way of seeing the success in
magazines and how consumer tastes/interests over magazines
change. This will show a way to publishes like Bauer on what
to improve on for the magazines.
Electronically, I think postal/electronic subscription will be
useful as it creates a strong relationship between the magazine
and the reader. Electronic subscription will mean easier ways
to read magazines through tablets such as iPads and Kindle
Fire. In addition to this, other electronic ways such as the
social media (Twitter, Facebook) will also be useful, helping the
magazine to reach out to more audience and hear their views
on the issues published, appealing to a younger generation of
readers.
