What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
QUESTION 3.
Biggest media distribution
companies in Britain today.
In the UK there are two major publishing houses, these are IPC and Bauer media. If I
produced for real I would use one of these companies to distribute my magazine. After
having looked at both IPC Media and Bauer Media, it is clear to me that both deal with
a range of magazines which includes music magazines.
For example IPC distribute
NME magazine, on the
website it states that the
target audience for NME
magazine is between the
ages of 15 and 34, 66% of
males and 34% of females
make up the population of
readers and the median age
of these readers is 24. This
is similar to the target
audience that I would be
aiming my music magazine
at.
Another example from Bauer
media is Q magazine. It has a
total circulation of 80,418 copies
due to Bauer media. The target
audience is similar to NME
magazine but the age range is
slightly higher which would still fit
into my age range for my target
audience. Q is also the largest
magazine in The UK.
If I were to choose a publishing house to distribute my
music magazine, it would be with Bauer media due to
the fact that they publish more music styled
magazines, this gives me the faith that they have a
good knowledge of targeting certain age groups in their
audiences for certain magazines. Having a good
publishing house for my magazine would mean that I
would be able to reach a larger audience which in turn
would mean that the popularity of my magazine would
begin to rise. Bauer media also deals with music
magazines that are aimed at a younger audience so
this would hopefully mean that my magazine aimed at
16-25 year olds would achieve better results with Bauer
media.
Another possibility for publishing my music
magazine I could pursue is creating my own
publishing house. Obviously this would be a
huge task to take on but I have looked at the
publishing house of MixMag, Development
Hell and they single-handedly publish
MixMag. They do this successfully and the
proof is that MixMag is one of the biggest DJ
magazines in Britain.
