I. Introduction of Architecture, Design, and Allied Arts
Architecture
 It is both the process and the product of planning, designing and constructing buildings and other physical
structures.
 Art and science of designing buildings and non-building structure
 Knowledge of Art, Science, Technology,and Humanity
Design
 It is the creation of a plan or conventionfor the construction of an object,system, or measurable human
interaction.
 Designing often necessitates considering the aesthetic, functional,economic, and socio-political dimensions
of both the design object and design process.
 Another definition for design is, a roadmap or a strategic approach for someone to achievea unique
expectation.
AlliedArts
 Allied – joined by or relating to members of an alliance.
 Arts – the conscioususe of the imagination in the productionof objects intended to be contemplated or
appreciated as beautiful, as in the arrangement of forms, sounds, or words.
 Allied Arts – fine arts, related disciplines in literature, the visual and performing
arts.
 Allied Arts (in architecture) – the decorative arts as applied to buildings.

II. SomeFilipino Artistsinthe FieldofArchitecture,Design,andAlliedArts
a. Federico AguilarAlcuaz
 June 6, 1932 – February 2, 2011
 Award-winning Filipino painter whoexhibited extensively
internationally
 His workwas recognized both in the Philippines and abroad.
 He conferred the title of “National Artist for Visual Arts, Painting
Sculpture and Mixed Media” in 2009.
b. Idefonso P. Santos
 Father of Philippine Landscape Architecture
 Known as I.P.Santos
 Created some of the best-loved urban spaces in the Philippines
 National Artist for Architecture in 2006
 Successful projects include the Makati Commercial Center and
Manila’s PacoPark.
 He transformed Spanish Cemetery and Japanese Ammunitions into a

 He has been challenging architectural convention in his native country
for 5 decades.
 Displayed artist temperament froman early age and remained a keen
painter throughout his life.
 Pursued Architecture and became the “Unspoken Champion of
Indigenous Architecture”, popularizing the idea of Philippine
Architecture for Filipino (Mixture of seemingly Incongruous Elements).
 The coconutpalace at The Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex
typifies Maῆosa’s style.
 Designated as a National Artist in Architecture in 2009
d. CarlosA.Santos-Violsa
 An urban young man who enjoyed lawntennis and playing the
saxophone and also a gifted architect.
 His best-knowndesign was executed for the Iglesia ni Cristo, a Filipino
Religious Group.
 He created churches forthe Group all over the archipelago.
 He chose toincorporate Gothic and Baroque elements into his modern
churches in harmony withSantos-Vioa’s passion forgeometric
shapes.
 “The structure must not only lookgood but must also made well.”
e. Leandro Locsin
 He was in some waysa quintessential Renaissance man.
 A brilliant architect, interior designer, and classically trained pianist
 He was also a keen art collectorof fine Chinese art and ceramics
during his lifetime.
 He was knownfor building buildings from airports, terminals,
memorial chapels, art centers, structures and left his arts on the
urban landscape of the Philippines.
 The National Theater building, within the complex is also knownas
“Floating volume”,is a good example of his trademark style.
LESSON8: GAWAD SAMANLILIKHANG BAYAN
I. Introduction to Gawad sa Manlilikhang Bayan
A. It is also called as National Living Treasures Award.
B. It is conferred on Filipinos who are the forefront of the practice, preservation, and promotion of the
nation’s traditional folk arts.
C. It was formalized in 1992 through Republic Act No. 7355, the Manlilikha ng Bayan Act.
D. The main objective of the award is to honor and support traditional folk artists and to preserved their
skills and crafts.
E. The Senate of the Philippines adopted Senate Resolution No. (SRN) 765 that is aiming to recognize
the accomplishments of the country’s living treasures.
F. Qualifications to be a Gawad sa Manlilikhang Bayan candidate:

i. He/she is an inhabitant of an indigenous/traditional cultural community anywhere in the
Philippines that has preserved indigenous customs, beliefs, rituals and traditions and/or
has syncretized whatever external elements that have influenced it.
ii. He/she must have engaged in a folk art tradition that has been in existence and
documented for at least fifty (50) years.
iii. He/she must have consistently performed or produced over a significant period, works of
superior and distinctive quality.
iv. He/she must possess a mastery of tools and materials needed by the art, and must have an
established reputation in the art as master and maker of works of extraordinary technical
quality.
v. He/she must have passed on and/or will pass on to other members of the community their
skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known.
G. A traditional artist who possesses all the qualities of a Manlilikha ng Bayan candidate, but due to age
or infirmity has left him/her incapable of teaching further his/her craft, may still be recognized if:
i. He/she had created a significant body of works and/or has consistently displayed
excellence in the practice of his/her art, thus achieving important contributions for its
development.
ii. He/she has been instrumental in the revitalization of his/her community’s artistic tradition.
iii. He/she has passed on to the other members of the community skills in the folk art for
which the community is traditionally known.
iv. His/her community has recognized him/her as master and teacher of his/her craft.
H. Incentives of the awardee
i. A Manlilikha ng Bayan awardee receives a specially designed gold medallion, an initial
grant of P100,000 and P10,000 monthly stipend for life.
ii. In consonance with the provision of Republic Act No. 7355, which states that “the
monetary grant may be increased whenever circumstances so warrant,” the NCCA board
approved an additional monthly personal allowance of P14,000 for the awardees as well as
a maximum cumulative amount of P750,000 medical and hospitalization benefits annually
similar to that received by the National Artists and funeral assistance/tribute fit for a
National Living Treasure.
II. FOLK ARCHITECTURE
A. Definition
 It is the living environment people have created for themselves.
 Local architecture – architecture formed in the process of anonymous design which later
becomes traditional under the influence of various factors.
 It is one of the most important sources of information to allow us to understand and explain the
ideas, views, traditions, customs and belief systems, family and relationships and
neighborhood relations of a community.

B. Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee in the field
of Architecture
a. Eduardo Mutuc
 He is an artist from Apalit, Pampanga.
 He dedicated his life to creating religious
and secular art in silver, bronze and wood.
 Samples of his works are handmade pieces
of cherubins and other church’s crafts.
 He is a GAMABA (Gawad sa Manlilikha
ng Bayan) 2005 awardee.
III. WEAVING
A. Definition
 It is the textile art in which two distinct sets of yarns
or threads which are called the warp and weft, are
interlaced with each other at right angles to form a
fabric or cloth.
 Warp – its threads run lengthways of the piece of
cloth and the cloth is woven on a loom which is a
device for holding the warp threads in place.
 Weft – its threads run laterally and unlike the warp,
weft do not need a loom.
B. Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee un the field
of Weaving
a. Teofilo Garcia
 He was born on March 27, 1941.
 He was awarded of Gawad sa Manlilikha ng
Bayan award for Hat Weaving.
 He is from San Quintin, Abra.
 He is known for makig the all-weather
headgear which is a well-made tabungaw that
can last up to three to four generations if
taken care of properly.

IV. CARVING
A. Definition
 It is the act of using tools to shape something from a material by scraping away portions
of that material.
 It can be applied to any material that is solid enough to hold a form even when pieces
have been removed from it, and yet soft enough for portions to be scraped away with
available tools.
 Carving, as a means for making sculpture, is
distinct from methods using soft and malleable
materials like clay, fruit, and melted glass, which
may be shaped into the desired forms while soft
and then harden into that form.
 Carving tends to require much more work than
methods using malleable materials.
V. PERFORMING ARTS
A. Definition
 The performing arts are those forms of art in which individual people perform separately
or together.
 The ar tist's own body, face, and presence is needed for the performance.
 The term 'performing arts' first appeared in the English language in the year 1711.
 It is a form of art in which artists use their voices and/or their bodies, often in relation to
other objects, to convey artistic expression.
 Performing arts include several disciplines, each performed in front of a live audience.
 Performing arts may include dance, music, opera, theatre and musical theatre, magic,
illusion, mime, spoken word, puppetry, circus arts, performance art, recitation and
public speaking.
B. Some Filipinos who Exceled in Performing Arts
a. Alonzo Saclag
 Alonzo Saclag from Lubuagan, Kalinga is
known for his talent in playing different
Kalinga musical instruments. He has
contributed a lot in preserving Kalinga
culture through dances, music and customs.
 He is a Kalinga master of dance and the
performing arts from Lubuagan, Kalinga
 He has mastered not only t he Kalinga
musical instruments but also the dance

patterns and movements associated with his people’s ritual.
 His tool was observation, his teacher and experience.
 He is the founder of the Kalinga Budong Dance Troupe that tours around the world
to represent and introduce Kalinga performing arts.
 In 2000, The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) declared
Alonzo Saclag as a Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee (National Living
Treasure).
b. Masino Intaray
 He is a gifted poet, bard artist, and a musician.
 This man is from Makagwa Valley,
Palawan.
 He is also a prolific and pre-eminent
epic chanter and story teller.
 In 1993, The National Commission
for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)
declared Masino Intaray as a Gawad
sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee
(National Living Treasure) for his
outstanding master of various
traditional music instruments of the
Palawan people such as basal, kulilal
and bagit.
c. Uwang Ahadas
 He is from Lamitan, Basilan.
 His near-blindness eyesight made
music his constant companion.
 Ahadas is a Yakan, a people to whom
instrumental music is of much
significance, connected as it is with
both the agricultural cycle and the
social realm.
 He is a hands-on-teacher to interested
individuals who wants to learn
playing Yakan instruments including
the kwintangan, kayu, and tuntungan.
 In 2000, The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) declared
Uwang Ahadas as a Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee (National Living
Treasure).

VI. LITERATURE
a. Definition
 Litteratura – “writing formed with letters”
 Term used to describe written and sometimes spoken material.
 Most commonly refers to the work of the creative imagination, including poetry,
drama, fiction, nonfiction, journalism, and some intances, song.
b. Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee in
Literature
 Ginaw Bilog
 He is a Hanunoo Mangyan poet from
Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro.
 Master of Ambahan Poetry, (not only
in bamboo tubes but an old, dog-eared
 notebooks passed on him by his
friends). A key to a Mangyan Soul.
 In 1993, He received the ‘Manlilikha
ng Bayan’ Award by the GAMABA or
the National Living Treasure Awards.
`
 June 3, 2003, Ginaw died at the age of 50 because of a lingering illness.
VII. GRAPHIC AND PLASTIC ARTS
a. Definition
1. Graphic Arts
 Covers a broad range of visual artistic
expression typical two-dimensional
(i.e. produced on a flat surface).
 Rely more on line or tone than on color
especially drawing and the various
form of engraving.
 Print making processes such as: line
engraving, aquatint, dry point, etching mezzotint, monotype, lithography and screen
printing.
 Includes; calligraphy, photography, painting, typography, computer graphics, and
bindery.
 It also encompasses drawn plans and layouts for interior and architectural designs.

2. Plastic Arts
 Art from which involves physical manipulation
of a plastic medium by molding or modelling
such as sculpture or ceramics.
 “Plastic” means certain synthetic organic resins
have been used ever since they were invented.

VIII. ORNAMENTS
a. Definition
 It is something used for decoration.
 It is also an art, a purely decorative element in architecture and decorative arts.
 The materials used to revamp the exterior of a thing to which it is added or which is
a part of architectural ornaments are called accessories, articles, or details.
 According to Wikipedia, ornaments usually
elaborate parts of a building or an object.
 It does not include human figures in
ornaments, if there are some; they are mostly
smaller compared to the total scale.
IX. TEXTILE AND FIBER ART
a. Definition
 This term was used on World-War II by
curators and art historian to describe the
work of artist-craftsman.
 This is a fine art that uses natural and
synthetic fiber and other components, such
as fabric and yarn as materials.
 Its focus is on the materials and manual labour on the part of the artist as part of
work’s significance.
 The aesthetic value is what it prioritizes
more than the utility.
c. Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee
1. Lang Dulay
 She is a T’boli, mainly the renowned weaver
among the “dreamweavers” of Lake Sebu,
South Cotabato.
 She was only 12 years old when she learned
how to weave.
 She created with her hand the distant past of

her people, T’bolis- the crocodiles, the butterfly, and flowers, along with mountains
and streams of their place, where she and her ancestors was born- fill the textile
with their longing to be learn by heart.
 She passed her talent and skills on weaving to the young in her community.
 She did everything to keep her people’s tradition through weaving.
 At 1998, Lang Dulay was an awardee of National Commission for Culture and
Arts’s Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or GAMABA.
2. Salinta Monon
 She is a Bagobo, a well-known weaver of
Bansalan, Davao del Sur.
 Just like Dulay, she was also 12 years old
when offered herself to her mother, to teach
her how to weave which she have learned
quickly.
 She has built a firm reputation for the
quality of her work and intricacies of her
designs.
 Sinukla and bandira were the two most
common-types of traditional hand-woven
tube skirt of Bagobo that she used to wear;
now she only wears her traditional clothes on special occasions.
 Her most favourite designs that she made and usually wears is the Binuwaya,
which is one of the hardest to make.
 Her distinctive craftsmanship had led to feature in international and local media.
 She was invited in Malacanang by President Fidel V. Ramos and had to chance to
travel to United States where she met President Bill Clinton.
 She was also an awardee of 1998, National Commission of Culture and Arts’s
Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA).

3. Darhata Sawabi
 She is a Tausug well-known weaver from
Barangay Parang, island of Jolo, Sulu.
 She was one of the pis syabit weavers,
traditional cloth tapestry worn as head covers
for Tausug women, who took the art making to
her heart.
 Weaving is her only source of income and her
remarkable proficiency and intricacy at pis
syabit weaving, which is difficult art, allows
her to price her creations a little higher than the
others.
 Her expertise in the craft and faithfulness to the traditional designs was recognized
by her own community.
 She had her chance to teach the young of her community and her legacy remains.
 Darhata Sawabi was also a 2004 awardee of National Commission for Culture and
Arts’s Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA).

Introduction of Architecture, Design, and Allied Arts Architecture  It is both the process and the product of planning, designing and constructing buildings and other physical structures.  Art and science of designing buildings and non-building structure  Knowledge of Art, Science, Technology,and Humanity Design  It is the creation of a plan or conventionfor the construction of an object,system, or measurable human interaction.  Designing often necessitates considering the aesthetic, functional,economic, and socio-political dimensions of both the design object and design process.  Another definition for design is, a roadmap or a strategic approach for someone to achievea unique expectation. AlliedArts  Allied – joined by or relating to members of an alliance.  Arts – the conscioususe of the imagination in the productionof objects intended to be contemplated or appreciated as beautiful, as in the arrangement of forms, sounds, or words.  Allied Arts – fine arts, related disciplines in literature, the visual and performing arts.  Allied Arts (in architecture) – the decorative arts as applied to buildings. *Architecture andAlliedArts aretwo maincomponents ofarts andculture.* II. Federico AguilarAlcuaz  June 6, 1932 – February 2, 2011  Award-winning Filipino painter whoexhibited extensively internationally  His workwas recognized both in the Philippines and abroad.  He conferred the title of “National Artist for Visual Arts, Painting Sculpture and Mixed Media” in 2009. b. Idefonso P. Santos  Father of Philippine Landscape Architecture  Known as I.P.Santos  Created some of the best-loved urban spaces in the Philippines  National Artist for Architecture in 2006  Successful projects include the Makati Commercial Center and Manila’s PacoPark.  He transformed Spanish Cemetery and Japanese Ammunitions into a National Park1966. Francisco Maῆosa  He has been challenging architectural convention in his native country for 5 decades.  Displayed artist temperament froman early age and remained a keen painter throughout his life.  Pursued Architecture and became the “Unspoken Champion of Indigenous Architecture”, popularizing the idea of Philippine Architecture for Filipino (Mixture of seemingly Incongruous Elements).  The coconutpalace at The Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex typifies Maῆosa’s style.  Designated as a National Artist in Architecture in 2009 d. CarlosA.Santos-Violsa  An urban young man who enjoyed lawntennis and playing the saxophone and also a gifted architect.  His best-knowndesign was executed for the Iglesia ni Cristo, a Filipino Religious Group.  He created churches forthe Group all over the archipelago.  He chose toincorporate Gothic and Baroque elements into his modern churches in harmony withSantos-Vioa’s passion forgeometric shapes.  “The structure must not only lookgood but must also made well.” e. Leandro Locsin  He was in some waysa quintessential Renaissance man.  A brilliant architect, interior designer, and classically trained pianist  He was also a keen art collectorof fine Chinese art and ceramics during his lifetime.  He was knownfor building buildings from airports, terminals, memorial chapels, art centers, structures and left his arts on the urban landscape of the Philippines.  The National Theater building, within the complex is also knownas “Floating volume”,is a good example of his trademark style. LESSON8: GAWAD SAMANLILIKHANG BAYAN I. Introduction to Gawad sa Manlilikhang Bayan A. It is also called as National Living Treasures Award. B. It is conferred on Filipinos who are the forefront of the practice, preservation, and promotion of the nation’s traditional folk arts. C. It was formalized in 1992 through Republic Act No. 7355, the Manlilikha ng Bayan Act. D. The main objective of the award is to honor and support traditional folk artists and to preserved their skills and crafts. E. The Senate of the Philippines adopted Senate Resolution No. (SRN) 765 that is aiming to recognize the accomplishments of the country’s living treasures. F. He/she is an inhabitant of an indigenous/traditional cultural community anywhere in the Philippines that has preserved indigenous customs, beliefs, rituals and traditions and/or has syncretized whatever external elements that have influenced it. ii. He/she must have engaged in a folk art tradition that has been in existence and documented for at least fifty (50) years. iii. He/she must have consistently performed or produced over a significant period, works of superior and distinctive quality. iv. He/she must possess a mastery of tools and materials needed by the art, and must have an established reputation in the art as master and maker of works of extraordinary technical quality. v. He/she must have passed on and/or will pass on to other members of the community their skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known. G. A traditional artist who possesses all the qualities of a Manlilikha ng Bayan candidate, but due to age or infirmity has left him/her incapable of teaching further his/her craft, may still be recognized if: i. He/she had created a significant body of works and/or has consistently displayed excellence in the practice of his/her art, thus achieving important contributions for its development. ii. He/she has been instrumental in the revitalization of his/her community’s artistic tradition. iii. He/she has passed on to the other members of the community skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known. iv. His/her community has recognized him/her as master and teacher of his/her craft. H. Incentives of the awardee i. A Manlilikha ng Bayan awardee receives a specially designed gold medallion, an initial grant of P100,000 and P10,000 monthly stipend for life. ii. In consonance with the provision of Republic Act No. 7355, which states that “the monetary grant may be increased whenever circumstances so warrant,” the NCCA board approved an additional monthly personal allowance of P14,000 for the awardees as well as a maximum cumulative amount of P750,000 medical and hospitalization benefits annually similar to that received by the National Artists and funeral assistance/tribute fit for a National Living Treasure. II. FOLK ARCHITECTURE A. Definition  It is the living environment people have created for themselves.  Local architecture – architecture formed in the process of anonymous design which later becomes traditional under the influence of various factors.  It is one of the most important sources of information to allow us to understand and explain the ideas, views, traditions, customs and belief systems, family and relationships and neighborhood relations of a community.

Eduardo Mutuc  He is an artist from Apalit, Pampanga.  He dedicated his life to creating religious and secular art in silver, bronze and wood.  Samples of his works are handmade pieces of cherubins and other church’s crafts.  He is a GAMABA (Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan) 2005 awardee. III. WEAVING A. Definition  It is the textile art in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads which are called the warp and weft, are interlaced with each other at right angles to form a fabric or cloth.  Warp – its threads run lengthways of the piece of cloth and the cloth is woven on a loom which is a device for holding the warp threads in place.  Weft – its threads run laterally and unlike the warp, weft do not need a loom. B. Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee un the field of Weaving a. Teofilo Garcia  He was born on March 27, 1941.  He was awarded of Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan award for Hat Weaving.  He is from San Quintin, Abra.  He is known for makig the all-weather headgear which is a well-made tabungaw that can last up to three to four generations if taken care of properly.

Definition  It is the act of using tools to shape something from a material by scraping away portions of that material.  It can be applied to any material that is solid enough to hold a form even when pieces have been removed from it, and yet soft enough for portions to be scraped away with available tools.  Carving, as a means for making sculpture, is distinct from methods using soft and malleable materials like clay, fruit, and melted glass, which may be shaped into the desired forms while soft and then harden into that form.  Carving tends to require much more work than methods using malleable materials. V. PERFORMING ARTS A. Definition  The performing arts are those forms of art in which individual people perform separately or together.  The ar tist's own body, face, and presence is needed for the performance.  The term 'performing arts' first appeared in the English language in the year 1711.  It is a form of art in which artists use their voices and/or their bodies, often in relation to other objects, to convey artistic expression.  Performing arts include several disciplines, each performed in front of a live audience.  Performing arts may include dance, music, opera, theatre and musical theatre, magic, illusion, mime, spoken word, puppetry, circus arts, performance art, recitation and public speaking. B. Some Filipinos who Exceled in Performing Arts a. Alonzo Saclag  Alonzo Saclag from Lubuagan, Kalinga is known for his talent in playing different Kalinga musical instruments. He has contributed a lot in preserving Kalinga culture through dances, music and customs.  He is a Kalinga master of dance and the performing arts from Lubuagan, Kalinga  He has mastered not only t he Kalinga musical instruments but also the dance

Gordon College Senior High School Department Olongapo City, Zambales Prepared by Group 1 Page 6 patterns and movements associated with his people’s ritual.  His tool was observation, his teacher and experience.  He is the founder of the Kalinga Budong Dance Troupe that tours around the world to represent and introduce Kalinga performing arts.  In 2000, The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) declared Alonzo Saclag as a Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee (National Living Treasure). b. Masino Intaray  He is a gifted poet, bard artist, and a musician.  This man is from Makagwa Valley, Palawan.  He is also a prolific and pre-eminent epic chanter and story teller.  In 1993, The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) declared Masino Intaray as a Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee (National Living Treasure) for his outstanding master of various traditional music instruments of the Palawan people such as basal, kulilal and bagit. c. Uwang Ahadas  He is from Lamitan, Basilan.  His near-blindness eyesight made music his constant companion.  Ahadas is a Yakan, a people to whom instrumental music is of much significance, connected as it is with both the agricultural cycle and the social realm.  He is a hands-on-teacher to interested individuals who wants to learn playing Yakan instruments including the kwintangan, kayu, and tuntungan.  In 2000, The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) declared Uwang Ahadas as a Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee (National Living Treasure).

Definition  Litteratura – “writing formed with letters”  Term used to describe written and sometimes spoken material.  Most commonly refers to the work of the creative imagination, including poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, journalism, and some intances, song. b. Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee in Literature  Ginaw Bilog  He is a Hanunoo Mangyan poet from Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro.  Master of Ambahan Poetry, (not only in bamboo tubes but an old, dog-eared  notebooks passed on him by his friends). A key to a Mangyan Soul.  In 1993, He received the ‘Manlilikha ng Bayan’ Award by the GAMABA or the National Living Treasure Awards. `  June 3, 2003, Ginaw died at the age of 50 because of a lingering illness. VII. GRAPHIC AND PLASTIC ARTS a. Definition 1. Graphic Arts  Covers a broad range of visual artistic expression typical two-dimensional (i.e. produced on a flat surface).  Rely more on line or tone than on color especially drawing and the various form of engraving.  Print making processes such as: line engraving, aquatint, dry point, etching mezzotint, monotype, lithography and screen printing.  Includes; calligraphy, photography, painting, typography, computer graphics, and bindery.  It also encompasses drawn plans and layouts for interior and architectural designs.

Plastic Arts  Art from which involves physical manipulation of a plastic medium by molding or modelling such as sculpture or ceramics.  “Plastic” means certain synthetic organic resins have been used ever since they were invented.  Three-dimensional VIII. ORNAMENTS a. Definition  It is something used for decoration.  It is also an art, a purely decorative element in architecture and decorative arts.  The materials used to revamp the exterior of a thing to which it is added or which is a part of architectural ornaments are called accessories, articles, or details.  According to Wikipedia, ornaments usually elaborate parts of a building or an object.  It does not include human figures in ornaments, if there are some; they are mostly smaller compared to the total scale. IX. TEXTILE AND FIBER ART a. Definition  This term was used on World-War II by curators and art historian to describe the work of artist-craftsman.  This is a fine art that uses natural and synthetic fiber and other components, such as fabric and yarn as materials.  Its focus is on the materials and manual labour on the part of the artist as part of work’s significance.  The aesthetic value is what it prioritizes more than the utility. c. Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee 1. Lang Dulay  She is a T’boli, mainly the renowned weaver among the “dreamweavers” of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.  She was only 12 years old when she learned how to weave.  She created with her hand the distant past of

Gordon College Senior High School Department Olongapo City, Zambales Prepared by Group 1 Page 9 her people, T’bolis- the crocodiles, the butterfly, and flowers, along with mountains and streams of their place, where she and her ancestors was born- fill the textile with their longing to be learn by heart.  She passed her talent and skills on weaving to the young in her community.  She did everything to keep her people’s tradition through weaving.  At 1998, Lang Dulay was an awardee of National Commission for Culture and Arts’s Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or GAMABA. 2. Salinta Monon  She is a Bagobo, a well-known weaver of Bansalan, Davao del Sur.  Just like Dulay, she was also 12 years old when offered herself to her mother, to teach her how to weave which she have learned quickly.  She has built a firm reputation for the quality of her work and intricacies of her designs.  Sinukla and bandira were the two most common-types of traditional hand-woven tube skirt of Bagobo that she used to wear; now she only wears her traditional clothes on special occasions.  Her most favourite designs that she made and usually wears is the Binuwaya, which is one of the hardest to make.  Her distinctive craftsmanship had led to feature in international and local media.  She was invited in Malacanang by President Fidel V. Ramos and had to chance to travel to United States where she met President Bill Clinton.  She was also an awardee of 1998, National Commission of Culture and Arts’s Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA).

Darhata Sawabi  She is a Tausug well-known weaver from Barangay Parang, island of Jolo, Sulu.  She was one of the pis syabit weavers, traditional cloth tapestry worn as head covers for Tausug women, who took the art making to her heart.  Weaving is her only source of income and her remarkable proficiency and intricacy at pis syabit weaving, which is difficult art, allows her to price her creations a little higher than the others.  Her expertise in the craft and faithfulness to the traditional designs was recognized by her own community.  She had her chance to teach the young of her community and her legacy remains.  Darhata Sawabi was also a 2004 awardee of National Commission for Culture and Arts’s Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA).
