Lesson 3
Have you ever wondered how the Philippine art developed?
PHILIPPINE ART HISTORY
ETHNIC ART (Pre-13 AD) Integral to life
Art is for ritual purposes or for everyday use. In the Philippines, ethnic arts are
labors of love and patience. Its detailed carvings on wood, metal, stone, and glass
are the result of skilled hands and creative minds.
ISLAMIC ART (13AD) Geometric designs
Art is characterized by geometric designs and patterns eliciting focus from
the believers. Geometric patterns are one of Islamic Art's three non-figural motifs,
along with calligraphy and flowers. The usage of people and animals is prohibited
in Islam. This stems from the belief that the One God is the only one who can create
living things.
SPANISH ERA (1521-1898) Faith and Catechism
Art became a handmaiden of religion, serving to propagate the Catholic
faith and thus support the colonial order at the same time. When the Spaniards
arrived in the Philippines in 1521, they utilized art to spread the Catholic religion by
using beautiful images to teach Catholicism's principles and to tell stories about
Christ's life and passion.
AMERICAN ERA (1898-190) Secular Art Forms
In the American regime, commercial and advertising arts were integrated
into the fine arts curriculum. Moreover, Americans favored idyllic sceneries and
secular forms of arts. The creation of a public educational system and educational
curriculum was central to American colonial policy in the domains of ideology and
culture.
Enrique Zobel Foundation | Senior High School 5
6. JAPANESE ERA (1941-195) Orientalizing
Since Japanese advocated for the culture of East Asia, preference was
given to the Indigenous art and traditions of the Philippines. This emphasized their
propaganda of Asia belonging to Asians.
Ancient pottery, sculpture, ink painting and calligraphy on silk and paper,
ukiyo – e paintings and woodblock prints, ceramics, origami, and more recently
manga, which includes Japanese cartoons and comics, among other things.
The arrival of the Japanese caused tremendous fear, hardships and suffering
among the Filipinos.
MODERN ERA (196-1969) National Identity
Philippine Art began after World War 2 and the granting of Independence.
Writers and artists posed the question of national identity as the main theme of
various art forms. Arts evolved into a wide range of expressions and mediums,
causing a creative revolution in the country.
CONTEMPORARY ERA (1970 up to present) Social Realism
Philippine Contemporary Art was an offshoot of social realism brought about
by Martial Law. Arts became an expression of people’s aspiration for a just, free
and sovereign society. Contemporary art is defined as the work of artists working in
the twenty-first century. Contemporary art reflects current culture and society,
providing a rich resource for public audiences to examine current ideas and
reconsider the familiar.
