violated.
 This behavior humiliates, dominates or put
another person down rather than simply
expressing one’s own emotions of thoughts.
 It is attack on the other person.

Understanding
Interpersonal
Behavior
JOHARI WINDOW
 A psychological tool created by Joseph Luft
and Harry Ingham.
 Referred to as a “disclosure/feedback model
of self awareness” and by some people an
“information processing tool”.
 Represents feelings, experiences, views,
attitudes, skills, intentions, motivation etc.
within or about a person in relation to their
group, from four perspectives.
JOHARI WINDOW
TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS
 Is a psychoanalytic theory and method
therapy developed by Eric Berne in 1950s.
 Method of analyzing and understanding
Interpersonal behavior.
 When a person interact, there is social
transaction in which one person responds to
another. The study of these transaction is
called Transaction.
TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS
PARENT EGO STATE
 The parent ego state incorporates the
attitudes and behaviors (the don’ts, should,
and ought) of parental figures.
 In the parent ego state “introjected” parent
figured from the past are evoked in the
present. They are the beliefs, mannerisms an
emotional responses of an actual parent from
the past.
 Outwardly the message are delivered through
prejudice, criticism, and nurturing behavior.
PARENT EGO STATE
1. Nurturing Parent- who comforts praises and
aid others.
2. Critical Parent-who finds fault, displays
prejudices, disapproves and prevents others
from feeling good about themselves.
ADULT EGO STATE
 The adult ego state is the congruent, aware
person attuned to themselves and their
environment, who responds congruently
without the contamination of parental
prejudice or childhood fantasy.
 People behave in a thinking, rational,
calculating, factual, unemotional manner.
 The adult gathers information, reasons things
out, estimate probabilities and make decision
with cool and calm behavior.
CHILD EGO STATE
 The archive of a person’s total life experience
to date, moments of which may be evoked
and re-experience in the present.
 When we are in the child ego state we act like
a child.
 Child ego state appears when we have to deal
with the expressing of spontaneity of feelings,
desires, intentions and hopes, emotions.
CHILD EGO STATE
1. Natural Child- when the child is hateful or
loving, impulsive, spontaneous or playful,
self centered.
2. Adapted Child- the complaining part of
personality conforms wishes and demands
of parental figures.
3. Little Professor- when it is thoughtful,
creative or imaginative.
TYPES OF TRANSACTIONS
COMPLIMENTARY TRANSACTION
 Both persons are operating
either from the same ego
state or from
complementary ego states.
 Responses are predictable
and appropriate.
ULTERIOR TRANSACTION
 Transaction is one in which
two ego states operates
simultaneously and one
message disguises the
other.
 They appear to be
complementary and
socially acceptable even
though they are not.
CROSSED TRANSACTION
 An inappropriate ego state
is activated, producing an
unexpected response.
 Crossed transactions hurt.
 Persons tend to withdraw
from each other or switch
topics.
LIFE POSITION
 Are basic beliefs about self and others, which
are used to justify decisions and behavior.
 Originally described by Eric Berne in an article
entitled “Classification of Positions”
 He delineated four life positions: “I’m OK,
You’re OK” (Good life position), “I’m not OK,
You’re OK” (Depressive Position), “I’m OK,
You’re not OK” (Paranoid Position), and “I’m
not OK, You’re not OK” (Futile Position)
LIFE POSITION
I’m OK, You’re OK
 It is potentially a mentally healthy position.
 If realistic, People with this position about
themselves and others can solve their
problems constructively.
 Their expectations are likely to be valid.
 They accept the significance of other people.
I’m OK, You’re not OK
 it is a position of persons who feel victimized
or persecuted, so victimized and persecute
others.
 They blame others for their miseries.
 Delinquents and criminals often have this
position and taken on paranoid behavior
which in extreme cases may lead to
homicide.
I’m not OK, You’re OK
 It is common position of persons who feel
powerless when they compare themselves to
others.
 This position leads them to withdraw, to
experience depression, and in severe cases to
be suicidal.
I’m not OK, You’re not OK
 It is the position of those who lose interest in
living, who exhibit schizoid behavior, and who
is extreme cases, commit suicide or homicide.
