The document summarizes a Ted Talk by Alan Smith about why people should love statistics. It discusses how statistics is the science of dealing with data about communities and how individuals relate to groups. It provides insights such as people often perceive things differently than reality and numbers can inspire and surprise. It also discusses how statistics can help businesses make better decisions, produce goods more efficiently, and support judgment. The conclusion is that statistics is really the science of understanding people and why we should be fascinated by numbers.

Data Science is the competitive advantage of the future for organizations interested in turning their data into a product through analytics. Industries from health, to national security, to finance, to energy can be improved by creating better data analytics through Data Science. The winners and the losers in the emerging data economy are going to be determined by their Data Science teams.
Booz Allen's experts define the science and art of Data Science in the ground breaking The Field Guide to Data Science. The work unlocks the potential data provides in improving every aspect of our lives by explaining how to ask the right questions from data.
Booz Allen Hamilton created the Field Guide to Data Science to help organizations and missions understand how to make use of data as a resource. The Second Edition of the Field Guide, updated with new features and content, delivers our latest insights in a fast-changing field. http://bit.ly/1O78U42
The field-guide-to-data-science 2015 (second edition) By Booz | Allen | HamiltonArysha Channa
Foreword: Data science touches aspects of our lives on a daily basis. When we visit the doctor, drive our cars, get on an airplane, or shop for services, Data science is changing the way we interact with and explore our world.
The biggest disruption of the digital age is the need to extract insight from data in a way that engenders trust. To make the best use of data, executives need to educate themselves — and use this insight to plan their data strategy now.
This document proposes a framework to better understand and address: 1) How we extract insight from data, and 2) How we use data in such a way as to earn and protect trust: the trust of customers, constituents, patients, and partners

Digitas Health LifeBrands took a trip to The Lone Star state and immersed ourselves in all things South by Southwest (SxSW).
The days went by fast and furious as we were pulled into speed sessions, meet-ups, brainstorms, demonstrations, hack-a-thons, pitches, accelerators, and a myriad of other Austin-style opportunities.
The next few slides are our attempt to bring some of these learnings home with an emphasis on why the message is relevant to healthcare marketers. Enjoy!

Using Big Data to Reveal Consumer Values and Inform StorytellingRavi Iyer
These are slides from a session at FutureM (Future of Marketing) Boston 2013. This joint session from Zenzi Communications + Ranker showed how online data can be used to understand the deeper values and motivations of consumers. We are inundated with graphs of data (e.g. social graphs, interest graphs, opinion graphs). We’ll give you techniques for mining actionable insight from graphs of data, which when studied correctly, can allow you to go beyond the specific interests of your customers and begin to understand their deeper motivations. By understanding their lasting motivations, brands can begin to find customers who will resonate with their strengths and tell value-specific stories that will turn customers into advocates.
Big data has given marketers an unprecedented view into the attitudes and behaviors of larger audiences than ever before. But as we become increasingly reliant on big-data analytics, we’re also basing our insights on the same data pool—and arriving at very similar ideas. It’s a race to the middle that can dilute brand perceptions and value.
For brands to stand out, big data isn’t enough. That’s where small data comes in.
In our latest white paper, we show how using small data—the tiny clues that can uncover consumers’ drivers and desires—can uncover consumer insights that can't be found through big data alone.
Read the white paper, and find out how small data can lead to breakthrough ideas that transform brands and brand experience.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
