In the film, Educating Rita, the life of a young working class woman dreams of pursuing an English
literature degree to help her gain social mobility. Rita, a 26 year old blue collar Liverpool hairdresser,
meets an English tutor, Dr. Frank Bryant in hopes that she would discover and experience true
happiness. Dr. Bryant is a wealthy alcoholic academic who suffers from low self esteem and
confidence and would eventually fall in love with Rita s unwitty ability to adapt to academia life and
her continuous commitment to change and grow as a writer. This an example of how blue collar
workers are identified to be more independent, natural, and spontaneous people compared to white
collar workers. Generally, we think of blue collar workers as less organized than white collar workers

In every bleak novel there is one character who is always there for comedic relief; in Hard Times, that
character is Mrs. Sparsit. Mrs. Sparsit is the housekeeper for Mr. Bounderby. Essentially she does all
the work that a wife would do except she has a lower status than a wife, but higher than a servant.
Here in lies the problem that she cannot deal with. Mrs. Sparsit came from a well to do family, but
slipped in the social rankings. To regain her pride, she attempts to sabotage Mr. Bounderby s marriage,
but in doing so only makes her a fool. In this passage, a robbery has just occurred and the townspeople
are trying to figure out who the perpetrator is. As of right now, they believe it is Stephen Blackpool.

Colonial American Hardships
Colonial Americans faced many hardships as they came to the new land and established the new
country. These hardships were explained and told in the writings of John smith, Phillis Wheatley, and
Anne Bradstreet. As these writers were primary sources, meaning they experienced the suffering and
privation first hand, you can have a better understanding of what it was like for them, or the people

In his acceptance speech for the 1949 Nobel Prize for Literature, the American laureate writer,
William Faulkner provided insight to what he felt is the only important subject worth writing about;
