Overeater Anonymous (OA) is a support group for individuals who have problems related to food
such as compulsive overeater, binge eating disorder, bulimics and anorexics. The meeting was
located at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin at 133 West 46th Street, NYC on Friday at 6pm.
The meetings are open to anyone who wants to obtain more information about the OA support
group and/or ways to deal with overeating. The meeting was more lecture based as it attempts to
teach the individuals ways to deal with their compulsive disorder. The OA meeting is a non profit
support group collecting any contributions that that the group can make to fund its meetings.
Furthermore, the main focal of the meeting was based on the twelve steps, which are a series of

In 2004, Riverview Medical Center (RRMC), originally called The Holy Name of Jesus
Hospital, was acquired and revamped by the Hospital Management Associates (HMA) and has
become a state of art facility with improved efficiencies to ensure high quality care. RRMC is a
281 licensed bed acute care facility accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations, certified for participation in the Medicare Program, and contracted
/participated in Blue Cross Plans (Richards Slovensky, 2004). The facility is one of the primary
employers in the area and provides job opportunities to approximately 700 individuals (Richards

The American Dream is often one of the most well known benefits of living in America. It is the
push factor that has driven millions of foreigners to flock to the so called land of opportunity.
Originally, the American Dream was established by a clause in the Declaration of Independence. It
reads, We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed
by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit
of Happiness (Declaration of Independence par. 2). The original American Dream, as laid out by
the founding fathers, was freedom from religious persecution and the right to live a happy life. That
simple idea has undergone a significant metamorphosis and now the American Dream is much

In his previous book, Malcolm Gladwell coined the phrase tipping point , meaning the moment
when an idea or concept suddenly becomes popular within the general populace, and in his
following book, he gives us the term Outliers which means something that lies outside of the normal
or the expected. In his book Blink, Gladwell provides us with two more phrases; thin slicing and
blink. To blink is to act without thinking, working on split second decisions to make choices.
Thin slicing is using the small amount of information that is known to come to a conclusion
without further searching for more information. According to Gladwell, snap judgements often
provide better decisions than well informed, over analysed ones, which is ironic in our
generation of information overload. The book, in the way that Gladwell s books tend to do,

Aravind Adiga effectively captures the true image of modern India through the story of the fictional
character Balram Halwai. The novel takes the reader through the struggles of class that exist in
India at a time when the country is undergoing rapid modernization and globalization. The novel
contradicts the exotic image of India that is generally represented in literature (for example, the
stories of Rudyard Kipling.) Instead the novel familiarizes us with the complications that have
emerged in modern India in the last half century post independence and the abolition of
untouchability.
Throughout the novel Balram Halwai, the protagonist and the narrator, alludes to the issue of
social mobility in the new social hierarchy of India. He discusses how the social hierarchy has
undergone massive changes since the colonial times. Like we learned in class, there is

Setting in John SteinbeckВґs East of Eden
John Steinbeck s, East of Eden, is set in the Salinas Valley, a secluded area of Northern California.
The Salinas River runs through this beautiful, yet unforgiving land and provides fertility to the dry
land. While the valley has a rich geographical history spanning from sea, to forest, and then to the
present day valley, it is a difficult destination to find prosperity. Two dramatic mountain ranges
form the landscape of the valley that the author uses to exemplify the idea of good and evil. This
theme is further outlined by the strong personalities of characters Cathy, Aron, and Cal. Cathy
and Aron have opposing dispositions, similarly to Steinbeck s descriptions of the Santa Lucias
and the Gabilan mountains. In between the two peaks is the valley, where both good and evil
preside. Cal s personality mirrors this setting as he struggles internally between being good and
evil for most of his life. Steinbeck s emphasis on dramatic setting correlates directly to the
personalities of the main characters in order to outline the theme of conflict between good and
evil in East of Eden. Evilness and its conflict with goodness in East of Eden is emphasized in
setting by the Santa Lucia Mountains and in character by Cathy Ames. The mountains provoke a
sense of fright and terror in Steinbeck as he remarks, The Santa Lucias stood up against the sky to
the west and kept the valley from the open sea, and they were dark and brooding unfriendly and

Dystopia is a society or place that is unpleasant and bad. Dystopian movies are often based on
themes that play out in the real world. The dystopian movie I am Legend by Frances Lawrence
has a theme of Loss of Humanity. I am Legend is about a woman who spread a virus saying it was
the cure to cancer. The curethat was said to be the cure to cancer, killed everyone in the city and Dr.
Robert Neville is trying to find a cure to the virus that affected the the entire city. Throughout the
movie, the theme that represented I am Legendused literary devices and universal storytelling
element. The theme is built through the use of symbols, narrative transport, heroic scenarios, and
an interesting way in which the movie is told.
The butterfly is one symbol from the movie that relates to the theme Loss of Humanity. The
butterfly was constantly used throughout the entire movie as a way for change in the life of
humanity. Near the end of the movie Robert Neville remembered what his daughter told him,
Look Daddy, it s a butterfly, (Lawrence). This relates back to theme Loss of Humanity because it
shows Robert Neville about his own personal destiny. Also, the butterfly goes back to symbolize
that him losing his life with help save others. The butterfly symbolizes change, lightness, and
transformation of how the world is going to end up. Robert Neville losing his family relates back to
the theme Loss of Humanity. In the beginning of the movie, Robert lost both his wife and
