The presentation summarizes the UK research community's adoption of ORCID identifiers over the past decade. It notes that in 2011, research councils endorsed ORCID and in 2015 they became members of the Jisc UK ORCID Consortium. In 2016, ORCID was integrated into the Je-S grants system. Currently, 38.5k ORCID IDs are linked in Je-S and 34% of active Je-S users have a linked ORCID. The presentation discusses next steps like considering mandating ORCID and using ORCID data in new funding services. It concludes by asking for feedback on improving ORCID uptake and priorities.

• Push review recognition to ORCID record
• Adoption of ORCID within UKRI Libraries
• Use of ORCID information in account creation stage within the new funding

10. Feedback
Questions
• How can we improve the uptake of ORCID?
• What should we prioritise?
• Should we mandate ORCID?
For several years the Research Councils and JISC worked together to understand how they could improve the flow of information across the higher education sector in 2011 a Research ID Task and Finish Group was convened by Jisc to analyse the need for identifiers. It was at this point that ORCID was endorsed as the best researcher identification solution.
It wasn’t until 2015 that the Research Councils became a member of the Jisc ORCID Consortium. It was at this point we started to think about how we could implement ORCID into the Je-S system.
In 2016 the Research Councils made an update to the Je-S system to enable users to link and create ORCID ID’s
In 2018 the year UKRI was formed we signed the ORCID open letter committing to future use of ORCID.
As we move towards the present day we have made the necessary changes to our system and renewed our membership of the Jisc UK ORCID Consortium.
Since going live in Je-S we have had a steady flow of new users signing up. As of last week we have linked over 38,000 ORCID accounts to Je-S records.
We had a look at active users in Je-S over the last year and found that 34% of these had linked an ORCID.
Interestingly 45% of UKRI researchfish users in 2019 have linked an ORCID clearly highlighting that many more academics have ORCIDS than we have linked in Je-S.
While uptake has been steady we have had a number of technical issues with our ORCID. This has caused periods where we have had to communicate to Je-S users to bypass the ORCID stage. This has not been optimal and our technical team are working hard to make sure this issue doesn’t continue.
Our current implementation of ORCID is fairly straightforward. We record ORCID in our Je-S system and this is used to feed externally facing systems like GtR as well as internal systems.
ORCID has also enabled researchfish users to transfer publications between the two systems reducing burden and improving ORCID adoptions.
It is also worth noting that Higher education funding bodies have encouraged ORCID use for REF2021 submission.
There was a government review on open access that recommended Funders consider mandating ORCID so we can also use it to promote OPEN research

We are currently evaluating this and looking at ways to mandate potentially via a soft mandate initially followed by a harder mandate in the new funding service.
In the new funding service we will be looking at opportunities to increase interoperability between ORCID and other systems for example allowing the transfer of grant details from our system through to ORCID records
Pushing review information where a review has been undertaken on behalf of UKRI.
Adopting API integrations within UKRI libraries
Having ORCID at the forefront of account creation in the new funding service.
