Oxford ORCID implementation

  1. 1. OXFORD ORCID IMPLEMENTATION NEIL JEFFERIES, BODLEIAN LIBRARIES, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD UK ORCID FORUM @NeilSJefferies
  2. 2. BACKGROUND • Jisc/ARMA Pilot project (May 2014-Jan 2015) • to explore the embedding of ORCID iDs in institutional systems and workflows • to assess costs, benefits and risks of ORCID implementation • to gather evidence and recommend how to proceed – if appropriate – with national ORCID membership • Aston, Imperial, Kent, Oxford, Northumbria, Southampton, Swansea, York • Institutional summary reports: https://orcidpilot.jiscinvolve.org/wp/hei-based-projects/ • Cost-Benefit Analysis: https://orcidpilot.jiscinvolve.org/wp/2014/10/13/institutional-implementation-and-cost- benefit-analysis/ • UK ORCID Consortium set up – that’s why we’re here!
  3. 3. APPROACH • Integrate with Institutional Identity Management System • ORCID linked to SSO account (user controlled) • ORCID potentially available to all services/applications accessed via SSO • University validated affiliation automatically managed • Requires ongoing multi-unit cooperation • Libraries, IT, Research Services
  4. 4. WHAT WORKED • Early high level buy in • A multi-unit identifier working group pre-dated the project • Looked at ORCID, ResearcherID, ISNI etc. • Now rolled into Data Architecture Subcommittee – factored into future IT projects • A harder implementation in the short term but easier/more strategic in the longer term • Challenges are not primarily technical • Ongoing multi-unit co-operation - http://researchdata.ox.ac.uk/ but… • Multiple communication channels - https://libguides.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/ORCID • 2016 Scoping Study – recommendations for institutional investment in ORCID • https://blogs.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/digital/2016/07/29/orcid-scoping-study-report/
  5. 5. UPTAKE FIGURES 2015 – Wellcome notification to Medical Sciences 2016 – Email from Head of MPLS Division 0 2000 4000 6000 8000 10000 12000 14000 6/25/2015 6/25/2016 6/25/2017 6/25/2018 6/25/2019 Numbers of Oxford linked ORCIDs
  6. 6. STILL WORKING ON • Symplectic Elements (and many other third parties) does not work with SSO • Separate ORCID integration (and consequent user approval) required • …or use a secondary institutional access token • …both of which have some security isssues • 2017 Jisc workshops -> ORCID implements on behalf of and token revocation • and wait for suppliers to catch up • Concurrent OA, REF, ORCID, Funder Mandates, FAIR, Plan S etc. messages can be confusing • Especially since they do overlap • Broader identity/identifier initiatives • FREYA, Publisher adoption, Data2paper
