3. Imago Relationship
 IRT is based on the idea that each person is born
whole and complete. Individuals are wounded by
main caretakers during socializing and nurturing
stages, though the infliction of these wounds is
not necessarily intentional. Everyone has a
composite image of negative and positive traits of
their primary caretakers deep within their
unconscious mind. The term “Imago” refers to an
individual’s vision of “familiar love.” According to
the IRT philosophy, the Imago forms a blueprint of
the person one needs as a committed life partner.
The goal of this type of therapy is to teach
partners how to develop deeper connections with
each other and dive deep into the unconscious
mind.
