Ice Storms are brought on by freezing rainfall. When rainfall comes into contact with a freezing cold surface area the rainfall becomes ice on contact. The freezing rainfall includes everything in smooth ice which on areas such as roofs and streets is particularly risky.

big freezing rain storm.
As freezing rain begins to
fall it forms coats of ice
on the objects that it falls
upon. The ice starts to
accumulate and soon the
weight of the ice upon
tree branches, power
lines, etc., becomes too
much and they start to
break.

3.  An ice storm happens when a warm air mass
collides with a cold air mass. Many ice storms
happen every year.
 They include cold temperatures, precipitation, and
strong winds.
 The process of an ice storm is when some water
vapor from the warm air condenses into clouds.

your woods: extreme cold and excess
weight.
 Root damage : Ice storms can cause
roots to break or begin lifting from
the soil, which can in turn weaken
your trees and cause them to topple.
 Breakage : The weight of
accumulated ice can strain even
strong trees. It can break a tree’s
branches and even its
trunk, compromising its structure
and leaving it vulnerable to insect
pests and disease.

5.  Ice can increase the weight of branches by 30
times.
 A 1/2" accumulation on power lines can add
500 pounds of extra weight.
 An ice storm in 2009 centered from northern
Arkansas to the Ohio Valley knocked out power
to 1.3 million.
