The Seduction Eileen McAuley
To His Coy Mistress Andrew Marvell
Eileen McAuley s The Seduction is set against the bleak surroundings of Merseyside. The purpose of
the story is to show a teenage girl s predicament after getting drunk at a party. The poet contrasts the
girl s ideas of love and sex with reality. This is done effectively by using techniques such as similes
and alliteration. The poem shows how young teenage girls can be easily seduced under the influence
of alcohol. The Seduction also shows how young girls can be manipulated by the media.

This line shows us how she has lost her innocence and is no longer pure. Another event that is linked
to innocence is when the girl rips up all her magazines until they were just bright paper, like confetti
strewn on the carpet .
Confetti is something that is usually used in weddings. McAuley cleverly uses the word confetti to
show the destruction of the girls innocence purity and romantic illusions.
There are many contrasts in the poem The Seduction . A major contrast is the difference between the
girl s past views on romance and her future. The girl views of romance are naive before her seduction.
She stifled a giggle, reminder of numerous stories from teenage magazines . By using the word giggle
McAuley shows that girls views are childish. McAuley also shows that the girl is very keen on the
teenage magazines by using the word numerous . This is because it shows that the girl has paid close
attention to the magazines, also that she possibly collects them because she has read many of them.
McAuley contrasts the girl s naive views with the girls imminent future. McAuley presents the future
of the girl as bleak by revealing what the girl will miss. Where you walk hand in hand in an acne d
wonderland . This line describes childhood and teenage life. It shows how the girl is going to miss
important parts of her childhood.
Another poem concerned with sexual attraction is Andrew Marvell s To

Essay On Thomas Jefferson A Hypocrite
Is Thomas Jefferson a Hypocrite or Not? After writing the Declaration of Independence, and saying
All men are created equal, Jefferson continued to own slaves of his own. Before, and after writing the
Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson said many cruel and offensive things to describe a
runaway slave. He is greatly addicted to drink, and when drunk is insolent and disorderly. (Slavery, 1)
Following his rude and offensive descriptions, he offered a reward for the one to find the missing
slave. Jefferson is seen to be a big hypocrite to many and in many ways, by the choices he did not take
when he should have. When Jefferson was making the poster that was offering a reward for the
runaway slave, he should have thought it through, and put himself in the slaves spot, before trying to
say malicious and irrelevant things about them. Would Jefferson have wanted to be treated like those
slaves were? Would Jefferson have ran away, if he was that slave? Many thought that Jefferson did not
try to stop slavery, because he might have had sexual intercourse with some of his slaves. Would that
stop you from stopping slavery? But that is not the most valid reason Thomas Jefferson is seen to be a
hypocrite. The most valid reason Jefferson was known as a big hypocrite, is because he wrote the

Some people think that Jefferson buying the Louisiana territory was a good thing, and a big help to the
nation, even though it was unconstitutional. A lot of people had the thought that Jefferson kept his
mouth shut about slavery because he did not want a bunch of chaos happening at the wrong time and
the wrong place. Jefferson clearly explains why he kept his mouth shut about slavery, and his fear of
certain things. I fear the terms in which I speak of slavery and of our constitution may produce an
irritation which will revolt the minds of our countrymen... and thus do more harm than good. (Slavery,

I am doing the project ¨ Is an egg denser in saltwater or tap water?¨ While doing this project, I found a
lot of things out. Objects such as eggs sink in liquids when their denser is greater than the liquid their
in. It helps keep less denser materials floating. Density means the degree of compactness of a
substance. I will be using EB eggs in my project. EB eggs are also known as England s Best. Since we
will be using eggs in my experiment, that´s what s we are going to be talking about. The outer layer of
a egg is called a shell. Eggs have lots of protein, vitamins, minerals, good fats, and a lot of trace

California. They were started in 2007 by two students as a startup company which created success for
them immediately. They offer file synchronization, personal cloud, cloud storage, and client software.
Dropbox makes it easy and quick to create a folder on their personal laptop or desktops, which
DropBox synchronizes so it shows to be the same folder with the exact same information. It makes it
easy to share files with other people on other computers. It doesn t make a difference which device
you are using to view it. The files which you place in this folder are accessible from many different
devices such as the DropBox website and with today s tech savvy users on your mobile apps.
DropBox makes it easy to share large files with anyone even if they don t have their own account.
Target Market DropBox failed when they created their first product because they didn t realize who
their target market was. They later learned that to make people want your product one must produce
something of value to the consumer. You have to understand people s need and provide them with a
quick and easy solution. According to the case study Dropbox went from 100,000 to many million

John B Goodenough Biography
John B.Goodenough The entire world uses the electricity to operate useful machines. One of the most
important use of electricity is to light up cities. Electricity is also used to light up the most important
device that people use which is the smart phone. John Goodenough is considered one of the most
important inventors in the engineering industry. Goodenough s hard work, writings and inventions
made him a great inventor and a remodel for many engineers. Goodenough is a person that everyone

According to the University of Texas website (2016), good enough wrote at least eight books and
more than 800 journal articles. This shows how he wants people to understand the idea of combining
chemistry and physics to be able to develop better batteries if he dies. In one of his books John
decided to explain the relationship between chemical bonding and magnetism. In the same book, he
explained the multiple equations that he used to get to the result which is his invention. In the book
review by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1964), the book described how
the electronic structure in their solid state behave and stated their electric and magnetic properties in
terms of semi empirical quantum mechanical theories of electronic interactions. This will motivate
scientists to search deeper in that field. Moreover, Goodenough wrote several articles that are related
to the area of physical chemistry, chemistry and physics. Another point to further explain is that

choose the right element in the battery (). Therefore, his writings gave humanity enough knowledge to

Morphing Of The 1996 Child Pornography Prevention Act
Morphing of Child Porn
At issue before the Circuit Courts has been the constitutionality of the 1996 Child Pornography
Prevention Act (CPPA) in which Congress sought to modernize federal law by enhancing its ability to
combat child pornography in the cyberspace era(Free Speech). There is a split in the circuit courts
regarding this bill, and this essay will address the discrepancy.
This piece of legislation classifies an image that appears to be or conveys the impression of a minor
engaging in sexually explicit acts as virtual child pornography. Such images include a photograph of a
real child that may be scanned, replicated and manipulated by computer to create a sexually oriented
photo, or a wholly fake child ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hilton, that the CPPA s definition of child pornography withstands constitutional scrutiny. The First
Circuit found itself firmly satisfied that it is well within Congress s power to regulate virtual
pornography of minors of all ages. (United)
The Ninth Circuit recognized there is a compelling interest in banning child pornography but stated
that the U.S. Supreme Court in Ferber implicitly rejected the regulation of pornography that does not
involve minors. Where the Ninth Circuit had hinged its ruling on the existence of an actual live child,
the First Circuit instead focused upon the social ills of the pornography itself.
The First Circuit explained that The government s interest in addressing these forms of child
pornography is no less powerful than in instances where an actual child is used and abused during the
production process. We will not second guess Congress s decision to address the social ills posed by
the various types of virtual child pornography. (United)
Along the same lines, the Eleventh Circuit, in United States v. Acheson, centered it s decision around
the Congressional purpose for enactment of CPPA the harmful effects of the child

Amelie Cultural Differences
As I re watched the film, I noticed several cultural differences. Some of the cultural differences
included: details, where they live, visuals, sound effects (music), photos, and clothing.
This film includes many details, including a scene of a blue fly that was capable of flapping 70 beats a
minute and landed in Montmartre. In a restaurant, the wind made two glasses dance on a tablecloth,
which led to show how Amelie was born. Those scenes weren t necessary, but in the French culture
they might have been because they value the littlest things. It also shows how life in France is. Being
in France, I noticed that many people go to the Cafe, where Amelie works, they also use telephone
booths, and they all seem to live in apartments. Throughout the film, I ... Show more content on

From what I saw, art is really important to them, there are pictures of art in many places during the
film. I also noticed a lot of buildings and stairs. As I kept watching the film, I realized that pictures are
really important in their culture. Some examples include: Amelie taking pictures of shaped clouds,
Nino having an album of pictures that he finds, and Amelie finding a box that included important
objects such as pictures and other materials. The visual of Amelie taking pictures of shaped clouds
shows how imagination plays a role in this film. I also noticed how important a garden gnome was to
Amelie s father. The gnome represented Amelie s father s dream of traveling. Soon, Amelie takes the
gnome and sends it to other places of the world, her father is sent pictures of the gnome traveling and
soon decides to travel himself. Another cultural difference is the music, which is very happy and
sometimes even sounds romantic. Equally important, the clothes that most women wear including
Amelie are a skirt with a blouse or t shirt and many of them have short hair. Lastly, this film didn t
focus a lot on history, economics, or politics. The only part I noticed where it talked about

What Are The Causes Of Desmoid Tumors
The most common causes linked to desmoid tumors are genetics. Parents pass on the inherited gene
called beta catenin to the offspring. Another form of this mutated genes causing this condition are
associated with familial adenomatous polyposis is an inherited form of colon cancer.
In some cases, the tumor does occur randomly with no association to genetics or other existing health
conditions. These forms are described as sporadic and generally don t spread to other parts of the
body, unlike an aggressive fibromatosis condition also referred to as desmoid tumors outside the
abdomen.
The high levels of hormones during pregnancy raise the risks desmoid tumors. In this stance, the cause
of the tumor is a result of the abdominal wall expanding to accommodate the developing fetus. Other
causes of these tumors during pregnancy are linked to the excessive amounts of hormonal changes

Emily Brontë Influences
RD1: Biography and Cultural Influences Tall, slim, lanky Emily Brontë; with eyes that can strike with
passion. Bront¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ë can be recognized as an individual poet or as one of the three Brontë sisters.
Life at the Brontë home was strange and unhappy due to many family deaths, including their mother s
death by cancer. In their isolation and vast imagination, the remaining siblings made up fictional
stories. One of Brontë s works that remains strong to this day is her book Wuthering Heights. Around
the time of Emily s childhood, diseases were sprawling; leading to the deaths of her oldest sisters
Maria and Elizabeth. The Brontë s experienced a sorrowful life, especially Emily, having to watch her
family suffer at such a young age. Spending the majority of her time with her siblings, they obtained a
bond over literature and writing. They created their own imaginary kingdom called Angria and gave it
its own history and characters. Emily and her sister Anne withdrew from the writings of Angria and
created an alternate history of Gondal, which went on until the 1840 s. The three sisters used

Taking a Look at Trauma Nursing
Imagine the following scenario: A 43 year old male and his 41 year old wife have just finished
celebrating their twentieth wedding anniversary at a local restaurant. The husband had a cocktail at the
bar while waiting for the table, and then had a couple of glasses of wine with dinner. After dinner, the
happy couple drive their vehicle home on a snow covered highway. The car begins to swerve on the
ice and enters oncoming traffic and hits a semi cab head on. After an extended extraction of the driver
by paramedics, the driver is found to be unconscious, has multiple head lacerations, chest contusions
from the steering wheel, and his left leg is bleeding profusely from a compound femur fracture. The
female is conscious, in shock, and states that she is 36 weeks pregnant and has pain in her abdomen.
Both victims are flown via helicopter to the nearest level 2 trauma center where 2 teams of emergency
room doctors, trauma surgeons, respiratory therapists, x ray technologists, phlebotomists, chaplains,
social workers, and of course, trauma nurses, are waiting to assess the patients and provide life saving
care. This scenario is not the exception in a level 2 trauma care center of the emergency room, it is the

Literary Analysis Of The Haunted Boy
Literary Analysis The Haunted Boy
The setting is used by the author in stories to display the mood of the scene. Specific details bring up
certain moods for the characters and the reader. For example, when talking about a warm, sunny day,
the reader can infer that the scene is going to be happy and there is going to be no misfortunate event
that happens. Carson Smith McCullers uses the setting in her short story The Haunted Boy to display
the different moods of the main character Hugh. The settings in the story help show how
uncomfortable Hugh is in the house after a past experience and shows how happy he is outside when
he remembers happy memories.
The beginning of the story starts out with one of few happy settings. The front yard was one of the
only places that brought happy feelings to the story. McCullers short story starts out by describing the
day having sunshine on a mid April afternoon and the front lawn being green (page 675). These
descriptions allow the reader to think warm and colorful thoughts. The story then goes to talk about
how the boys are running outside in the warm. Hugh race up the sidewalk, and John followed him.
They finished the front steps with two bounds, and the door slammed after them (page 675). This
shows how the boys are having fun and enjoying each others company. Finally, the front yard is the
place that Hugh remembers some of his fond memories of his mother. Sometimes she would be out
fooling with the border of spring flowers the candytuft, the sweet William, the lobelias (she had taught
him the names)... (page 675). From this explanation, the reader can relate to the character thinking
about different memories that they may have that bring happy thoughts to mind.
One of the only places in the house that brought a comfortable feeling to Hugh was the kitchen. The
kitchen is described as bright and clean and the best room in the house (page 676). In the kitchen,
there are fresh towels and clean dishes. This statement gives you the feeling that everything is going
well in the house and there is nothing wrong. The kitchen is also the only place in the house that made
Hugh feel comfortable and safe (Page 677), except on this particular day when there was no note from

Because the tree is different from its surroundings, it is faced with discrimination and judgement.

Friendships is a poem by Erica Fryberg that can relate to almost anybody who has experienced real
and fake friendships, as it is about the speaker s perspective on friendships, and the difference between
having real and fake friends, forced friendships and real friendships. Through a comparison of
friendships and furniture, the poet uses a humorous tone to describe friendships, making the speaker
relatable. I particularly enjoyed this, as on a personal level I was able to relate to this, as a student at a
school where teachers attempted to force unnatural relationships multiple times. Overall, this poem
was an engaging poem, which, through language and poetic devices, clearly described the difference
between real and fake friendships.
As the title implies, the subject matter of this poem are friendships, and real and fake friends. The first
stanza describes how forced friendships are often fake, and are only an idealized image of real
friendships, made only for the purpose of pleasing the teacher. Through a comparison of furniture and
friendships, the poet depicts the fakeness of the forced friendships, and how they seem polished and
shine like glass, yet are also easily shattered. On a personal level, this particularly is ... Show more

Causes And Effects Of Urban Sprawl
Introduction:
The word Urban Sprawl means more growth than the usual and the excessive nature of it makes it
different from the urban growth (S. Habibi, 2011). Urban sprawl is the major issue of the cities all
over the world. It is a universal problem faced by both developed and developing countries. Due to
urban sprawl cities expand beyond their city boundary, which becomes major threat to sustainability
and quality of life (Kaur, 2008). There are many causes, which contribute in the expansion of the city
beyond its boundary, i.e. population growth, urbanization, rising incomes, single use zoning, and
government regulations promoting low density development. The population of the world is
increasing and so is the demand for the urban land. In order to accommodate the growing population,
new developments take place, and the cities expand physically. Many consequences are being faced as
a result of urban sprawl. There is a great loss of open spaces, forests and farmlands. Due to expansion
the distances to the core of the cities has increased, which resulted in automobile dependency and
congestion of services and infrastructure (Kaur, 2008). Oil based economies also increase demand for

The city s built environment and its inhabitants were seen to be unique works in this process. Urbanity
then is both a sociocultural construct and a built environment construct. As the former urbanity is a
lifestyle or way of being linked to living or being in the city, it is a form of civic culture that requires
tolerance to difference. Through this lens urbanity is liberal middle class rhetoric about quality of life
in the city. As the latter urbanity is something that the built environment delivers through its very
physical fabric ─ its architecture and public spaces, its densities and connections. (Lees,

How Organisational Structure and Strategic Planning Can...
Strategic planning is important for all businesses because this is when they set there aims and will
discuss how they can achieve that aim. These aims have to be realistic and the owners will discuss this
with their workers. Some aims might be hard to get but executives will want their workers to push
hard so that it can be achieved. Marks and Spencer s aim was to be the best supermarket in Britain but
the recession had affected them really bad giving them losses of over 100 million pounds. Currently
they are making profits of 50 million pounds but it is nowhere near what they made a few years ago.
Strategic planning will show what direction the business is going to achieve its aims. The planning
may last for up to 4 years and is drawn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

John Lewis has also done well and they have been doing well since the start of 2011. John Lewis and
Next have been doing really well because they have made changes in prices and the offers that are
being made are worth the money. Gradually as more people start buying the product they will increase
the price.
John Lewis who s partners with Waitrose has benefitted them and Waitrose. John Lewis needed a good
start to the year as at the end of 2010 they suffered heavy losses with the snow showers. They made
losses over 30 million at Christmas time which is where spending is high and is the time where John
Lewis makes a lot of sales. John Lewis has been expanding over London and they are going to open a
new store in Westfield s in Newham. Opening a store in Westfield s is good for business but they may
have competition from other stores in Westfield s. John Lewis has a big store in Kingston and that is
where they have been making a lot of profit and they are planning to build more stores in London as
that s where most people are spending.
Marks do have financial backing but they need to improve areas that are weak. There online website

Compare And Contrast The Atomic Bomb And Hiroshima Mon Amour
The Atomic Bomb and Hiroshima mon Amour You saw nothing in Hiroshima. Nothing. In Hiroshima
mon Amour, mise en scene and editing are used in conjunction with inspiration from the French New
Wave Movement to express the severity and complexity of the traumas endured following the atomic
bomb in Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. In this trauma narrative, mise en scene and disjunctive editing
create a unique tone that ultimately represents the crippling struggle between past, present, and future.
This struggle also allows for an emerging theme between personal and public tragedies, understanding
the link between She (Emmanuelle Riva) s experiences and the bombing in Hiroshima. Involved in
two wars during the time of Hiroshima mon Amour s release in 1959, the ideological stance of France
was inevitably centered around war. However, this film presents an alternative ideological viewpoint,
focusing on suffering and remembrance rather than the tragedies themselves. This point of view can
be traced back to the start of the French New Wave movement where using film to portray thoughts
and emotions allowed filmmaker Alan Resnais the opportunity to produce a film with his own strong
creative touch. The first scene in this film opens on a dark room inside of which a couple lay naked
wrapped in each other s arms. Light classical music plays in the background, and She tells her story of
Hiroshima. He (Eiji Okada) frequently chimes in with his strong, deep voice, telling She that she

Texting Is Not Safe ! Haha
I can not discuss this now. Driving and Facebooking is not safe! Haha. were the last words of Taylor
Sauer, before her car traveling at 80 mph slammed into a tanker truck (Hosansky 407). At just 18, a
Utah State University student lost her life due to the distraction that millions of Americans find
themselves facing: smartphones. While on her way to visiting family in Idaho, one bad decision
resulted in her death. I think she was probably texting to stay awake, she was probably tired, stated her
father. But that s not a reason to do it, and the kids think they re invincible. To them, texting is not
distracting; they are so proficient at texting that they don t feel it s distracted driving. (Hosansky 407).
Taylor s father raised an essential question: Are teenagers unaware of the damage that their favorite
devices can cause if misused? Smartphones raise a serious concern, especially among parents. This is
due to both the psychological damage and danger that smartphones place on their children whose
brains are not yet fully developed. According to a study conducted on 404 undergraduate students,
three fourths felt that they are dependent on their phones.() The increasing use and popularity of
smartphones are an issue that can cause relationship issues, safety concerns, and distractions all which
can be detrimental to society. One of the most detrimental consequences of smartphones is the
distraction they promote while driving. They are not only endangering both the

Personal Experience In High School
It was a friday evening football season was getting ready to start up again. I loved going to the football
games and mingling with my classmates. It also meant that school was getting ready to start back up
and I would be fresh meat as everybody call the new upcoming freshman. I was excited to be around
new people in a new environment from middle school. Also a little nervous but who wouldn t be
nervous starting high school.
I was ready to be on the sideline at games cheering the team on, going to the different pap rally s,
basketball games, and just everything high school had to offer for me. I made a promise to myself that
I would be an active student throughout my four years there, and I m going to do just that. Me and
Lenzie worked things out we told each other how we felt and what we could do to improve our
friendship before letting outsiders in. I was half that we could sit down and talk things out I didn t
want to lose someone that know literally everything about me. We both made the junior varsity
sideline cheer team but our games were on Thursday s so we could get dressed up to go see varsity on
Fridays. I called Lenzie to see what she was wearing to the game and ask her for her opinion on what
she think went together. I don t know why but I just felt that I needed to be really cute tonight. Maybe
I will find my high school sweetheart tonight who knows. She told me she was wearing a skirt and a

Ethics In Psychology
The code of ethics is very important through out all aspects of psychology. Without ethical guidelines
psychology would be completely different from what we know it to be. These guidelines protect the
rights of all participants, so without guidelines participants would have no rights or protection during
research. The researcher would be free to do as they please, as they don t have any ethical guidelines
to consider.
There has been many researchers who haven t followed any ethical guidelines during their work, but
at the time this was seen as the norm by the majority of society. It was acceptable for researchers to
carry out experiments which go against every ethical guideline that we have today, this was because
ethics did not exist. People ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Efficient Markets Hypothesis Posits That `` Security...
The efficient markets hypothesis posits that security prices fully reflect all available information
(Fama, 1991). In an efficient market, a stock s price accurately depicts its fundamental value.
However, researchers have shown that real markets are actually inefficient, and are hindered by risky
arbitrage and irrational investors. Because of market frictions, incomplete information, and systematic
biases, stock prices react to changes in uninformed demand in addition to actual fundamental shifts,
resulting in sustained and pervasive mispricing. This essay aims to challenge the theory of market
efficiency, and in so doing, support the position that stock prices do not always reflect stocks
fundamental values. Riskless arbitrage is one underlying assumption of the efficient markets
hypothesis. It theorizes that any opportunities to profit through mispriced stocks will be immediately
exploited by savvy arbitrageurs and subsequently eliminated, returning market price to equilibrium at
its fundamental value. However, in real markets, arbitrage is risky due to market frictions and
incomplete information (Shleifer Summers, 1990). The market friction of transaction costs such as
commission and the bid ask spread may limit the willingness of investors to participate in arbitrage.
Likewise, incomplete information creates risk for arbitrageurs, particularly when shorting overvalued
stocks. The market may potentially do well and thus justify the overpricing, or the market may

Candide, The Idea Of Optimism
Comedy of ideas, a form a satire and also known as a form of high comedy, is a when two ideas of
thoughts are put directly against each other. Typically it involves characters arguing about ideas that
involve politics, social classes, and society as a whole. Characters use wit, mockery, and clever
language as a way to mimic and mock their challenger. In the case of Candide, the idea of optimism
(Pangloss views) and pessimism (Martin) are pinned against each other. Optimism is an attitude in
which one remains hopeful and positive despite the negative circumstances. Pangloss view of
optimism involves his belief that everything happens for a reason. Pangloss is stuck in this particular
state of mind through out the novel. He firmly believes that the death, mishaps and misfortunes of
others are the way the world is and God has a plan. Candide also starts out in this state of mind due to
the fact that Pangloss mentored him and shaped his way of thinking. However, unlike Pangloss,
Candide progresses in his way of thought. In this novel, Pangloss represents Voltaire s attack on
philosophical optimism and the non progressive social consequences involved with optimism.
Voltaire depicts three lifestyles in Candide. Candide starts out by living in a Paradise , a representation
of the Garden of Eden. Then there is a Utopia which is his time living in El Dorado, a place where
everyone is equal and competition is nonexistent. This is essentially the most perfect

Analysis Of Educating Rita
Educating Rita: A Realistic Film From the Director s Perspective
Educating Rita is a realistic look at a woman s journey to change and find herself. The director keeps
the film simple while watching her overcome a lack of confidence and other obstacles. The film is
considered a comedy but is still a relatable story because the director represented Rita s character as
she really would be(dictionary.com).
Rita, real name Susan, is a young married hairdresser that wants to get an education. Frank is an
alcoholic literature teacher who is assigned to help her through the program she enrolled in. Both have
rocky relationships and the audience could easily assume they end up falling for each other(Maslin).
Rita has a thirst for knowledge but little understanding of what she is quoting. Rita makes new friends
and tries new things. She even marvels at how much she liked seeing Macbeth(Maslin). By the end of
the movie she gains an understanding of her education and passes her test with distinction. Through
this series of events both characters end up single, yet part in the same manor that they met(Maslin).
Lewis Gilbert, the director of the film, had the responsibility of using all the elements of film to
interpret the writers ideas(dictionary.com). In Educationg Rita he uses realistic lighting and very little
mood music to indicate how the viewer should feel during the scene. Another way a director can get a
viewer to feel a certain way or to focus on a particular conversation, is

Wonder Woman is an iconic superhero with her lasso of truth she is able to make anyone tell the truth.
It sounds farfetched but for William Mouton Marston it wasn t. Marston was one of the main
developers who worked on the polygraph. After the polygraph was finished was ridiculed and went on
to create Wonder Woman (Dujack). The polygraph is what Marston based Wonder Woman s lasso of
truth on. In reality both the polygraph and the lasso of truth are fictitious dreams that might one day
rid the world of criminals and lies.
There are many instances in which the polygraph is proven to be at fault such as with Cleve Backster.
He was a polygraph examiner and believed strongly in the polygraph and its results. Backster one day
decided to attach a houseplant that was in his office to the machine. He then would light the plants leaf
on fire to see if the polygraph would have a spike in action. To his surprise as he struck the match the
polygraph jumped signifying a response (Eells). Instead of considering that the polygraph went off
randomly Backster instead assumed the plant had feelings and could even read his mind. This
discovery lead to many scientific research projects in which scientists were unable to replicate
Backster s results. Rather than dismiss the event and polygraph as unreliable Backster dedicated the
rest of his life to proving his discovery. The polygraph has been drilled into the minds of people as
credible that taking it out of the justice system

The Seduction Eileen McAuley To His Coy Mistress Andrew Marvell Eileen McAuley s The Seduction is set against the bleak surroundings of Merseyside. The Seduction Eileen McAuley To His Coy Mistress Andrew Marvell Eileen McAuley s The Seduction is set against the bleak surroundings of Merseyside. The purpose of the story is to show a teenage girl s predicament after getting drunk at a party. The poet contrasts the girl s ideas of love and sex with reality. This is done effectively by using techniques such as similes and alliteration. The poem shows how young teenage girls can be easily seduced under the influence of alcohol. The Seduction also shows how young girls can be manipulated by the media. McAuley ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This line shows us how she has lost her innocence and is no longer pure. Another event that is linked to innocence is when the girl rips up all her magazines until they were just bright paper, like confetti strewn on the carpet . Confetti is something that is usually used in weddings. McAuley cleverly uses the word confetti to show the destruction of the girls innocence purity and romantic illusions. There are many contrasts in the poem The Seduction . A major contrast is the difference between the girl s past views on romance and her future. The girl views of romance are naive before her seduction. She stifled a giggle, reminder of numerous stories from teenage magazines . By using the word giggle McAuley shows that girls views are childish. McAuley also shows that the girl is very keen on the teenage magazines by using the word numerous . This is because it shows that the girl has paid close attention to the magazines, also that she possibly collects them because she has read many of them. McAuley contrasts the girl s naive views with the girls imminent future. McAuley presents the future of the girl as bleak by revealing what the girl will miss. Where you walk hand in hand in an acne d wonderland . This line describes childhood and teenage life. It shows how the girl is going to miss important parts of her childhood. • 3. Essay On Thomas Jefferson A Hypocrite Is Thomas Jefferson a Hypocrite or Not? After writing the Declaration of Independence, and saying All men are created equal, Jefferson continued to own slaves of his own. Before, and after writing the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson said many cruel and offensive things to describe a runaway slave. He is greatly addicted to drink, and when drunk is insolent and disorderly. (Slavery, 1) Following his rude and offensive descriptions, he offered a reward for the one to find the missing slave. Jefferson is seen to be a big hypocrite to many and in many ways, by the choices he did not take when he should have. When Jefferson was making the poster that was offering a reward for the runaway slave, he should have thought it through, and put himself in the slaves spot, before trying to say malicious and irrelevant things about them. Would Jefferson have wanted to be treated like those slaves were? Would Jefferson have ran away, if he was that slave? Many thought that Jefferson did not try to stop slavery, because he might have had sexual intercourse with some of his slaves. Would that stop you from stopping slavery? But that is not the most valid reason Thomas Jefferson is seen to be a hypocrite. The most valid reason Jefferson was known as a big hypocrite, is because he wrote the Declaration of ... • 15. Literary Analysis Of The Haunted Boy Literary Analysis The Haunted Boy The setting is used by the author in stories to display the mood of the scene. Specific details bring up certain moods for the characters and the reader. For example, when talking about a warm, sunny day, the reader can infer that the scene is going to be happy and there is going to be no misfortunate event that happens. Carson Smith McCullers uses the setting in her short story The Haunted Boy to display the different moods of the main character Hugh. The settings in the story help show how uncomfortable Hugh is in the house after a past experience and shows how happy he is outside when he remembers happy memories. The beginning of the story starts out with one of few happy settings. The front yard was one of the only places that brought happy feelings to the story. McCullers short story starts out by describing the day having sunshine on a mid April afternoon and the front lawn being green (page 675). These descriptions allow the reader to think warm and colorful thoughts. The story then goes to talk about how the boys are running outside in the warm. Hugh race up the sidewalk, and John followed him. They finished the front steps with two bounds, and the door slammed after them (page 675). This shows how the boys are having fun and enjoying each others company. Finally, the front yard is the place that Hugh remembers some of his fond memories of his mother. Sometimes she would be out fooling with the border of spring flowers the candytuft, the sweet William, the lobelias (she had taught him the names)... (page 675). From this explanation, the reader can relate to the character thinking about different memories that they may have that bring happy thoughts to mind. One of the only places in the house that brought a comfortable feeling to Hugh was the kitchen. The kitchen is described as bright and clean and the best room in the house (page 676). In the kitchen, there are fresh towels and clean dishes. This statement gives you the feeling that everything is going well in the house and there is nothing wrong. The kitchen is also the only place in the house that made Hugh feel comfortable and safe (Page 677), except on this particular day when there was no note from his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Erica Fryberg Friendships is a poem by Erica Fryberg that can relate to almost anybody who has experienced real and fake friendships, as it is about the speaker s perspective on friendships, and the difference between having real and fake friends, forced friendships and real friendships. Through a comparison of friendships and furniture, the poet uses a humorous tone to describe friendships, making the speaker relatable. I particularly enjoyed this, as on a personal level I was able to relate to this, as a student at a school where teachers attempted to force unnatural relationships multiple times. Overall, this poem was an engaging poem, which, through language and poetic devices, clearly described the difference between real and fake friendships. The first stanza describes how forced friendships are often fake, and are only an idealized image of real friendships, made only for the purpose of pleasing the teacher. Due to urban sprawl cities expand beyond their city boundary, which becomes major threat to sustainability and quality of life (Kaur, 2008). There are many causes, which contribute in the expansion of the city beyond its boundary, i.e. population growth, urbanization, rising incomes, single use zoning, and government regulations promoting low density development. The population of the world is increasing and so is the demand for the urban land. In order to accommodate the growing population, new developments take place, and the cities expand physically. Many consequences are being faced as a result of urban sprawl. There is a great loss of open spaces, forests and farmlands. Due to expansion the distances to the core of the cities has increased, which resulted in automobile dependency and congestion of services and infrastructure (Kaur, 2008). Urbanity then is both a sociocultural construct and a built environment construct. As the former urbanity is a lifestyle or way of being linked to living or being in the city, it is a form of civic culture that requires tolerance to difference. Through this lens urbanity is liberal middle class rhetoric about quality of life in the city. As the latter urbanity is something that the built environment delivers through its very physical fabric ─ its architecture and public spaces, its densities and connections. (Lees, ... • 23. Compare And Contrast The Atomic Bomb And Hiroshima Mon Amour The Atomic Bomb and Hiroshima mon Amour You saw nothing in Hiroshima. Nothing. In Hiroshima mon Amour, mise en scene and editing are used in conjunction with inspiration from the French New Wave Movement to express the severity and complexity of the traumas endured following the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. In this trauma narrative, mise en scene and disjunctive editing create a unique tone that ultimately represents the crippling struggle between past, present, and future. This struggle also allows for an emerging theme between personal and public tragedies, understanding the link between She (Emmanuelle Riva) s experiences and the bombing in Hiroshima. Involved in two wars during the time of Hiroshima mon Amour s release in 1959, the ideological stance of France was inevitably centered around war. However, this film presents an alternative ideological viewpoint, focusing on suffering and remembrance rather than the tragedies themselves. This point of view can be traced back to the start of the French New Wave movement where using film to portray thoughts and emotions allowed filmmaker Alan Resnais the opportunity to produce a film with his own strong creative touch. The first scene in this film opens on a dark room inside of which a couple lay naked wrapped in each other s arms. Light classical music plays in the background, and She tells her story of Hiroshima. Haha. were the last words of Taylor Sauer, before her car traveling at 80 mph slammed into a tanker truck (Hosansky 407). At just 18, a Utah State University student lost her life due to the distraction that millions of Americans find themselves facing: smartphones. While on her way to visiting family in Idaho, one bad decision resulted in her death. I think she was probably texting to stay awake, she was probably tired, stated her father. But that s not a reason to do it, and the kids think they re invincible. To them, texting is not distracting; they are so proficient at texting that they don t feel it s distracted driving. (Hosansky 407). Taylor s father raised an essential question: Are teenagers unaware of the damage that their favorite devices can cause if misused? Smartphones raise a serious concern, especially among parents. This is due to both the psychological damage and danger that smartphones place on their children whose brains are not yet fully developed. According to a study conducted on 404 undergraduate students, three fourths felt that they are dependent on their phones.() The increasing use and popularity of smartphones are an issue that can cause relationship issues, safety concerns, and distractions all which can be detrimental to society. • 28. The Efficient Markets Hypothesis Posits That `` Security... The efficient markets hypothesis posits that security prices fully reflect all available information (Fama, 1991). In an efficient market, a stock s price accurately depicts its fundamental value. However, researchers have shown that real markets are actually inefficient, and are hindered by risky arbitrage and irrational investors. Because of market frictions, incomplete information, and systematic biases, stock prices react to changes in uninformed demand in addition to actual fundamental shifts, resulting in sustained and pervasive mispricing. This essay aims to challenge the theory of market efficiency, and in so doing, support the position that stock prices do not always reflect stocks fundamental values. Riskless arbitrage is one underlying assumption of the efficient markets hypothesis. It theorizes that any opportunities to profit through mispriced stocks will be immediately exploited by savvy arbitrageurs and subsequently eliminated, returning market price to equilibrium at its fundamental value. However, in real markets, arbitrage is risky due to market frictions and incomplete information (Shleifer Summers, 1990). The market friction of transaction costs such as commission and the bid ask spread may limit the willingness of investors to participate in arbitrage. Likewise, incomplete information creates risk for arbitrageurs, particularly when shorting overvalued stocks. The market may potentially do well and thus justify the overpricing, or the market may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Candide, The Idea Of Optimism Comedy of ideas, a form a satire and also known as a form of high comedy, is a when two ideas of thoughts are put directly against each other. Typically it involves characters arguing about ideas that involve politics, social classes, and society as a whole. Characters use wit, mockery, and clever language as a way to mimic and mock their challenger. In the case of Candide, the idea of optimism (Pangloss views) and pessimism (Martin) are pinned against each other. Optimism is an attitude in which one remains hopeful and positive despite the negative circumstances. Pangloss view of optimism involves his belief that everything happens for a reason. Pangloss is stuck in this particular state of mind through out the novel. He firmly believes that the death, mishaps and misfortunes of others are the way the world is and God has a plan. Candide also starts out in this state of mind due to the fact that Pangloss mentored him and shaped his way of thinking. However, unlike Pangloss, Candide progresses in his way of thought. In this novel, Pangloss represents Voltaire s attack on philosophical optimism and the non progressive social consequences involved with optimism. Voltaire depicts three lifestyles in Candide. Candide starts out by living in a Paradise , a representation of the Garden of Eden. • 31. Analysis Of Educating Rita Educating Rita: A Realistic Film From the Director s Perspective Educating Rita is a realistic look at a woman s journey to change and find herself. The director keeps the film simple while watching her overcome a lack of confidence and other obstacles. The film is considered a comedy but is still a relatable story because the director represented Rita s character as she really would be(dictionary.com). Rita, real name Susan, is a young married hairdresser that wants to get an education. Frank is an alcoholic literature teacher who is assigned to help her through the program she enrolled in. Both have rocky relationships and the audience could easily assume they end up falling for each other(Maslin). Rita has a thirst for knowledge but little understanding of what she is quoting. Rita makes new friends and tries new things. She even marvels at how much she liked seeing Macbeth(Maslin). By the end of the movie she gains an understanding of her education and passes her test with distinction. Through this series of events both characters end up single, yet part in the same manor that they met(Maslin). Lewis Gilbert, the director of the film, had the responsibility of using all the elements of film to interpret the writers ideas(dictionary.com). In Educationg Rita he uses realistic lighting and very little mood music to indicate how the viewer should feel during the scene. The polygraph is what Marston based Wonder Woman s lasso of truth on. In reality both the polygraph and the lasso of truth are fictitious dreams that might one day rid the world of criminals and lies. There are many instances in which the polygraph is proven to be at fault such as with Cleve Backster. He was a polygraph examiner and believed strongly in the polygraph and its results. Backster one day decided to attach a houseplant that was in his office to the machine. He then would light the plants leaf on fire to see if the polygraph would have a spike in action. To his surprise as he struck the match the polygraph jumped signifying a response (Eells). Instead of considering that the polygraph went off randomly Backster instead assumed the plant had feelings and could even read his mind. This discovery lead to many scientific research projects in which scientists were unable to replicate Backster s results. Rather than dismiss the event and polygraph as unreliable Backster dedicated the rest of his life to proving his discovery.
