Incivilities In Neighborhood
Neighborhood disorder, broadly defined as the social and physical incivilities within a neighborhood
(Sampson Raudenbush, 1999), affects residents perceptions of fear and safety (Austin, Furr Spine,
2002; Yavuz Welch, 2010). Social incivilities could include drunk people in public space or
panhandlers while physical incivilities include litter or deliberate property damage. Wilson s and
Kelling s broken windows theory (1982) provides social sciences with the most well known model of
neighborhood disorder, which posits that the presence of physical and social incivilities lead to greater
fear among neighborhood residents. Consequently, a cycle of perpetual social breakdown within the
neighborhood occurs.
Many others have since examined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, very little is known about how other types of community violence (e.g.,
robberies/muggings, gang fights, and fights with weapons) affect women s perceptions of safety.
Furthermore, even less is known about how men respond to violence within their neighborhoods. The
literature suggests that men are more prone to fears of confrontation or robbery, therefore, men s
perceptions of safety may revolve around community violence, such as robberies/muggings, gang
fights, or fights with weapons, and less around sexual

Comparison of Whitman and Dickenson Poems
America experienced profound changes during the mid 1800 s. New technologies and ideas helped the
nation grow, while the Civil War ripped the nation apart. During this tumultuous period, two great
American writers captured their ideas in poetry. Their poems give us insight into the time period, as
well as universal insight about life. Although polar opposites in personality, Emily Dickinson and Walt
Whitman created similar poetry. Dickinson s Hope is a Thing with Feathers and Whitman s O
Captain! My Captain! share many qualities.

Unlike in Dickinson s poem, the rhyming scheme carries throughout the whole poem, although the
AABBCDED rhyme pattern contains a few cases of near rhyme.
br
br Dickinson and Whitman also use similar poetic devices in Hope is a Thing with Feathers and O
Captain! My Captain! Each poem contains an extended metaphor. In Dickinson s poem, a bird clearly
symbolizes hope. The first stanza introduces the bird metaphor: ‘Hope is the thing with feathers /That
perches in the soul. The next lines ‘And sings the tune without the words /And never stops—at all—
illustrate the interminable nature of the bird and hope. The second stanza expands the metaphor by
saying ‘And sweetest—in the Gale—is heard—. The bird s song, or hope, is the sweetest during a
Gale, or troubled times. The first lines in the final stanza ‘I ve heard it in the chillest land / And on
the strangest Sea describe the bird, or hope, as being everywhere. The last lines ‘Yet, never, in
Extremity,/It asked a crumb—of Me show the unselfish nature of the bird; hope never asks for
anything in return. O Captain! My Captain! contains a more complicated and cryptic extended
metaphor. Basically, Abraham Lincoln captains the metaphorical ship of the United States through the
Civil War. The second line ‘The ship has weather d every rack, the prize we sought is won means the
United States survived the tribulation of the Civil War, and the citizens won the prize they sought,
unity. Abraham Lincoln

Thesis Statement On Standardised Testing
Standardised Testing
Thesis
Standardised testing is something every high school student has to go through as it is a crucial and
stressful part of the college application process. During their junior year, high school student s stress
levels increase as they have to take both the SATs/ACTs and AP tests. The SAT was introduced in
1926 and since then it has slowly become more integrated into the standard procedure in order to get
into a university. The AP is an understandable test as it tests students on what they studies in class; the
SAT on the other hand requires students to do all the learning and studying on their own time. Some
students may even pay hundreds of dollars on the test prep books and classes on top of the already
expensive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One source suggests that they have been tax exempt since 2003, but it is not clear if they still are.
What is being done now?
According to FairTest.org, there are over 900 universities in the US, out of about 4,000, that don t
require SAT or ACT scores.
The University of New Hampshire stopped accepting standardised test scores altogether; the president
of the university commented that after doing so the quantity of applications went down, but the quality
went up as they found that the applicants collectively were more mature and motivated mainly
because the application process became harder with the increased focus on essay submission.
There has been an SAT optional movement in which many liberal arts colleges in the US decided not
to require SAT or ACT scores as they thought it had outlived its usefulness.
The former president of Sarah Lawrence College stated that We are a writing intensive school, and the
information produced by SAT scores added little to our ability to predict how a student would do at
our college; it did, however, do much to bias admission in favor of those who could afford expensive

How Does Titan Affect The Life On Titan
However, if life had somehow developed in these cold and hydrophobic bodies of liquid methane and
ethane, its surface to volume ratio considerations may be less constraining than at higher temperatures
in polar solvents. On Earth, lower temperatures create a more viscous solvent, causing slower
diffusion and rate of metabolism. If this applies to Titan, life there could involve huge (by Earth
standards) and very slowly metabolizing cells. This would slow evolution down significantly, instead
having potentially longer lived organisms, especially since atmospheric tholins reduce the radiation
damage they receive significantly (Schulze Makuch 1480 1481). Having slow metabolic processes and
slow evolutionary capabilities may not be advantageous on Titan with its frequently changing surface
liquid conditions if the life depends on being within the hydrocarbon liquids for survival. In order to
cope with the rapid changes, life on Titan could go into a form of suspended animation while the
surface liquids are in their period of evaporation and reanimate with its return, a successful survival
method for the tardigrade. Another option would be that it does not require being in a liquid for
survival, instead utilizing the products of photolysis, aerosols and tholins, that could cover Titan s
surface with 100 200 metres and more (Simakov 395), as some anaerobic bacteria on Earth are
capable of fulfilling their energy and nitrogen needs through the consumption of tholins

Essay about Bram Stoker
Bram Stoker
Bram Stoker unleashed his horrific creation on an unsuspecting world over one hundred years ago.
One could hardly imagine that his creature of the night would delight and inhabit the nightmares of
every generation between his and ours. Count Dracula has become an icon of evil, and is perhaps the
most widely recognized bogeyman in all of world literature. To date, there have been over one
hundred films made about Dracula or other assorted vampires, not to mention countless novels, comic
books, nonfiction works, toys, clubs and societies even a children s breakfast cereal celebrating the
myth of the undead count. Dracula s notoriety is of such epic proportions that it has all but obscured

Stoker was mesmerized by Irving s charismatic performance, but was disappointed to find only a
cursory mention of the event in the next day s Dublin Evening Mail. A second tour by Irving four
years later produced an equally unsatisfactory mention in the Mail, prompting an outraged young
Stoker to march into the offices of the newspaper and offer himself for the unpaid position of theater
critic. He got the job, and as a result, when Irving (now a star of the London stage) returned to Dublin
a third time, this time to star in Hamlet, Stoker had the opportunity to set down in print glowing
praises of his favorite actor. Irving read the review and was delighted to the extent that he invited the
young critic to supper at his hotel, and began a friendship that would last for almost thirty years.
In the years between 1870 and 1877, Stoker, yielding to his father s wishes, followed him into a career
as civil servant in Dublin Castle. However, Stoker maintained ties to Trinity College, returning there
frequently to speak on a wide range of topics for the Philosophical Society.
In 1878, Irving took over ownership and renovation of London s Lyceum Theatre, and asked Stoker to
come to London to manage the theater and Irving s career. Stoker immediately resigned his dreary
civil service position, married a young lady he had recently been

I. THE MAIN FACTORS LED TO THE COLLAPSE
When the words spread about the large size of fishery, fleets from all over the world joined the hunt.
Every year, the size of the fleets got bigger and every year, the size of the catch increased. In the late
50s the arrival of large factor ships from other countries hailed the first onslaught to the finely
balanced renewable cod fishery. These factory trawlers came from England, the U.S., the Soviet
Union, East and West Germany, Portugal, Poland, and some Asia nations such as Japan and Korea.

In Newfoundland over 35,000 fishers and plant workers from over 400 coastal communities became
unemployed in 1992 (Collapse of the Atlantic Northwest Cod Fishery). * ECOLOGICAL:
The Atlantic cod fishery collapse left terrible ecological consequences. As mentioned above, the
fishing technology was a major destruction to the ecological system by using deployment and
draggers. The huge nets that were dropped and dragged along the bottom of the ocean destroyed the
underlying eco system in the process. The effect of selective fishing on spawning grounds that is,
selectively over exploiting one species in an ecosystem had disastrous effect on the feeding
relationships in that ecosystem. This contributes to the overall reduction of spawning stock biomass of
the targeted species, but also an increase in the number of invertebrate and vertebrate predators such
as crustacean and fish which will prey on cod eggs, larvae, and younger fish. It is a little wonder that a
species like cod, would eventually run into difficulties struggling to survive when its habitat is being
continuously destroyed and the balance of their food chain had been wiped out. III. CANADIAN

Richard Berry s Original Versions Of The 1963 Version...
Originally recorded in 1956 by Richard Berry, Louie Louie is best known for the 1963 version
recorded by The Kingsmen. Richard Berry was a rhythm and blues singer of the 1950s while The
Kingsmen were a 1960s garage band. The two different versions of this song are similar, however they
feature differences in many areas such as style, sound, lyrics, and instrumentation. The different
versions also offer different cultural significances, despite Berry being the original writer of the song

These qualities can easily be heard through Berry s first verse, starting at 25 seconds into the song.
Berry harmonizes well with his backup singers, and is clearly comprehensible throughout the whole
passage. On the contrary, Ely s voice sounds unrehearsed and often as if he is yelling the song rather
than singing it. Ely s voice is often masked by the instrumentation, and incomprehensible at some
points. These characteristics can be noted clearly at the one minute mark of the video, at this point Ely
sounds as if though he is yelling, is masked by the instrumentation, and cannot easily be understood.
Berry clearly enunciates his speech while Ely slurs his words and varies in volume throughout the
song. Part of these differentiations could be due to the fact that The Kingsmen were a garage band,
they had little formal training and recorded on simple equipment, potentially leading to the rough
sound of Ely s voice. The multiple differences between Berry and Ely s voices give rise to a distinct
sound for each version.
Lyrically, the verses of both of these songs are very similar, while the choruses are more different.
Both versions feature imperfect grammar, using phrases such as Me catch a ship across the sea,
instead of I catch a ship. This substitution of me for I can be heard multiple times throughout both
versions of the song. The lyrics used in the verses of The Kingsmen s cover are nearly identical to the
lyrics used in Berry s original version. The

The Implications Of Genetically Engineered Foods
Genetically engineered foods are defined as foods that have had genes from other animals or plants
(hereby referred to as foreign genes) added onto their genetic codes. The genetic engineering
technique can be employed on animals, plants, or on such microorganisms as bacteria (NIH). The
question of whether foods derived from such organisms should be approved for human consumption is
what has raised widespread controversy among many circles. There are those who view GM foods as
the ultimate solution to major challenges of the 21st century while others see them as a threat to
human health and the environment. Notably, the global society is facing major challenges key among
them being food insecurity and environmental issues such as global warming and climate change.
Genetically engineered foods present a potential solution to these challenges. This paper will argue
that with adequate research and regulation, genetically engineered foods should be approved owing to
the benefits they present in terms of increased food production and quality, as well as eliminating the
need to compromise the environment in the pursuit of more cultivation land and higher crop yield.
In my view, we certainly need genetically engineered foods to fight food insecurity that characterizes
the global society. A look at related statistics denotes a population that is facing serious food security
challenges. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), an estimated 795 million

criminal psychology, psychologists engage in many various kinds of investigation and

what makes them commit a crime? Is it the responsibility of an individual s genetic makeup that
makes them a criminal or is it the environment in which they are raised and surrounded by that
determines their criminal behavior? Extensive research has been conducted regarding these questions.

Behaviorists argue that people are not born with a violent disposition; rather they learn to think and act
violently as a result of their everyday experiences (Bandura, 1977). Albert Bandura (1977) states
behavior is learned from the environment through the process of observational learning. This popular
behavioral notion is known as the social learning theory. Bandura believes that humans are active
information processors and think about the relationship between their behavior and its consequences.
Studies of family life, for example, show that aggressive children often model the violent behaviors of
their parents. In 1961, Bandura conducted the famous bobo doll experiment in which children
observed the people around them behaving in various ways. The experiment involved exposing
children to two different adult models; an aggressive model and a non aggressive one. After observing
the adults and their aggressive or non aggressive behavior, the children were later allowed to play in a
room with the Bobo doll by themselves. When they played with the doll by themselves, alone in a
room, they began to imitate the actions they had previously observed by the adults. The children who
had observed the adults aggressively playing with the doll imitated a similar aggressive behavior

Lillian Smith focuses on why and how the white South treated black people during the late 1800s and

One example is the lady insurrectionists of the South, specifically the white women, who spoke out
against sexism and some discrimination of black people. The chapter titled The Women states, They

lynching to protect them and did not want it. Not only that, they continued, but they would personally
do everything in their power to keep any Negro [sic] from being lynched... (145). Furthermore, these
lady insurrectionists continued to progress, such as going against southern tradition, creating an
Association of Southern Women for the prevention of Lynching (146), and breaking bread with fellow
men of other color (147). Both the white women and the women of color, despite their major
differences and resentment, decided that in order to move forward in social justice, they would first
have to eat meals together and come together in order to work together. Unfortunately, there are two
sides to every coin. The poor whites of the South may have built a community among themselves, but
unlike the communities built in Freak the Mighty and the lady insurrectionists and black women, they
did not reach out to help other prejudiced groups. The South s poor whites were not as disadvantaged
as the previously mentioned groups, for they were fed their privileges by the rich white Southern man.

1689 in his opera Dido and Aeneas. Although the opera follows the overall storyline of the myth, there
are several differences between the retelling and the original myth. These differences affecting the

end up alone together and succumb to their passions, causing Dido to break her vow of chastity. A
vow she made when her late husband, Sychaeus, was murdered by her brother causing her to flee her
home kingdom and found Carthage. The news of the affair spreads and is heard by a neighboring king
who the Queen had rejected due to her vow. In his anger the king asks for Jupiter s help who sends
Mercury to tell Aeneas that he needs to continue his journey to Italy. Dido is angry with Aeneas
leaving, but he tells her it is not his destiny to stay, in the end she threatens to kill herself if he leaves.
As Aeneas sails away, Dido curses him with her last breath, the smoke from her funeral pyre rising
into the sky where Aeneas can see it. Aeneas meets Dido one last time when he travels to the
underworld, but this does not come up in Henry Purcell s retelling.
In Henry s version of Dido and Aeneas, Aeneas crash is not shown he simply appears in front of
Queen Dido and they profess their feelings for each other. The second difference in the myths is that
in this version there are witches and a sorcerer that work together to destroy the Queen and Carthage
who they hate. To do this they create a storm while Dido, Aeneas and their entourage are out hunting
forcing the party to return to the castle. Aeneas is the last to leave and before he joins the party the
witches send an elf disguised as Mercury with a message that the gods are angry with him for his

The Sparks Heritage Museum Is An Important Architectural
The Sparks Heritage Museum is an important architectural facet of the Sparks area. The building was
built in 1931, by Rousch Belz Contractors, and designed by Frederic J. DeLongchamps to serve as the
Sparks branch of the Washoe County Library. The building served as the first public library in area
and is located at 814 Victorian Ave, Sparks, NV (all PDF). The building was placed on the Nation
Register of Historic Places in 1984 (Website) and displays influences from the Mediterranean Revival
style of architecture, being one of two buildings in Sparks (the other being the Immaculate Conception
Church) created in that style (PDF).
The setting for the Sparks Heritage Museum and Cultural Center is in what was the downtown
commercial area of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The windows on the front and sides of the building differ from those in back. The similarities among
all of the windows is that they feature glass panes separated by muntins, have sills, and are without
lintels. The windows on the front side of the building have a hinged lower section, feature twelve
panes of glass, and the windows have security bars on the basement floor. The windows on the back
are slim, with fourteen panes of glass each. Characteristics that the building share with the
Mediterranean revival style are its semicircular arched entry, red tiled roof, wrought iron balustrades
on its twinned, L shaped staircases that lead to the first floor, and small paned windows.(PDF) The
building features a central, gabled pavilion and the roman arching that frames the double door main
entrance features a protruding keystone, and is flanked on both sides by original light fixtures(PDF).
Above the front entrance to the first floor of the building is a half circle window with five panes of
clear glass framed in wood. Two unique stones can be found on the building; one on the northeast
corner noting the building as the Sparks Branch Washoe County Library , and the other on the
southeastern corner baring the image of a Freemason square and compass.
While much of the building s exterior is original, there are some changes that have occurred both
inside and outside of over time. The door for the front entrance

Summary Of False Confessions In Popular Culture
I chose an article from the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Criminology and Criminal Justice. The
title of the article is False Confessions in Popular Culture. I chose this article because I ve always been
fascinated with criminal interviews. I ve attended numerous interview and interrogation courses
throughout my career. One of the best interview schools I ever attended was Reid interview and
interrogation. One of the most debated subjects in all of these courses was false confessions. The
reason I liked the Reid interview and interrogation course is because they offered different techniques
on how to avoid false confessions.
The article starts out discussing all the emotions associated with false confessions and how the news
media and television shows have popularized false confessions. People undoubtedly have made false
confessions for years. The article discusses how the media and tv shows have ... Show more content

Suspects make compliant false confessions due to avoid the stress of a harsh police interrogation.
Interrogations are stressful and worrisome on both the guilty and the innocent. It s hard to believe that
someone would admit to falsely committing a criminal act merely to avoid a harsh interview, but it
does happen. Another reason that people make complaint false confessions is that they feel they will
receive less severe punishment.
Persuaded false confessions is when a suspect during a police interview begins to doubt or second
guess themselves and falsely confesses to a criminal act, despite having no memory of it. Interrogators
have to be careful not to use suggestive interview techniques because they can cause or can generate
false memories of committing crimes (Shaw Porter, 2015). Over the course of my career, I ve had
numerous people make false confessions. That s why interview schools are so

Mikhail Gorbachev Decade
I think that Mikhail Gorbachev should be Person of the Decade. Mikhail Gorbachev was born on
March 2, 1931 into a Russian Ukrainian family in Privolnoye, Russia. His father, Sergei, and mother
Maria were both peasants. After three years in the Russian Army Mikhail s father returned wounded
and ended up passing down his experience as a combine harvester to Mikhail, which he showed a
natural ability at. As Mikhail reached his teenage years, he helped out his family by working at a
machine stated driving tractors. Once he reached the age of 17 he was known as the youngest person
to win the Order of the Red Banner for Labor. What the Order of the Red Banner for Labor meant was
that his hard work helped bring in the bumper crop of that year. He ... Show more content on

Under the badge of democratization, restructuring has now encompassed politics, the economy,
spiritual life, and ideology. Both Regan and Gorbachev struggled to get along with one another as well
as agreeing on the development of a Strategic Defense Initiative. Reagan wanted this, while on the
other side, Mikhail did not. When it came down to it Gorbachev ended up agreeing with Reagan in the
year of 1987, making it the first ever mutual agreement on nuclear weapons reduction. With
everything he was doing Mikhail ended up becoming the first president of the Soviet Union on March
15, 1990 with election coming from the Congress of People s Duties. His leadership skills and his help
he contributed to the overall betterment of the world were so good that he ended up winning a Nobel
Peace Prize. In the year of 1991 Mikhail was captured in a coup by Prime Minister Pavlov whom he
had hired to help him balance power with Yeltsin; all because he wanted more power. When he had
returned home people didn t trust him due to the fact that they thought he was working with the coup
leaders. The Soviet Union in turn crumbled in the late year of 1991, making Gorbachev hand over his
power to the Yeltsin and resign as

From The New Right To Neoliberalism
Neoliberalism is a new form of economic policy. It is a very contemporary concept, having become
more relevant in the last half of the century. As defined by Jean Hardisty in the article From the New
Right to Neoliberalism, Neoliberalism is the economic, social, and political analysis that best
describes the startlingly unequal distribution of wealth and power in the U.S. today. In other words,
everything that is wrong with our government today is a product or effect of Neo Liberalism. Because
of Neoliberalism, the people who are rich and in power remain and in power and actually continually
get richer while the unfortunately, the poor stay poor and have little to no way to climb the ladder of
equality. Neoliberalism had to start somewhere.

How People Respond to Interpersonal Rejections Essay
The desire for positive social relationships is one of the most fundamental and universal human needs.
This need has a deep root in evolutionary history in relation to mating and natural selection and this
can exert a powerful impact on contemporary human psychological processes (Baumeister Leary
1995). Failure to satisfy these needs can bear devastating consequences on the psychological well
being of an individual. These needs might not be satisfied as rejection, isolation, and ostracism occurs
on a daily basis to people. Although being ignored and excluded is a pervasive circumstance present
throughout history across species, and humans of all ages and cultures i.e the use of Ostracism (the
feeling of isolation and exclusion) has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the evaluation of the hierarchy of needs it represents that positive interpersonal relationships are
at the core of existence just as much as physiological needs. Since the basis of human existence is
supported by the hierarchy of needs its important to discuss what happens when aspects of this is non
existent i.e interpersonal relationships. Research that has developed is extensive as to how ostracism
has and is being used to marginalize individuals and groups and the consequences this can have on the
individual and society. The primary research of Ostracism began with studies that provided a
foundation by studying how individuals react to being ostracised by a few others which provided
sources for understanding how minorities would feel if they were to be marginalized by a dominant
society (Carter Sowell 2008). The primary research within ostracism was central to psychological and
emotional responses. One of the first paradigms developed was the ball toss paradigm by Williams
and Sommer in 1997. This experiment stimulated the victim to feel ostracized because the participants
would toss the ball to each other and then after a period of time the participant would be left out
causing them to feel rejected. More modern approaches to stimulating ostracism include the O train by
Zadro et al in 2005, 2006 and the Scarlet letter study by Ambady et al 2000. Although all of these
studies took different approaches the outcomes were consistent with the

Daniel Boone, An American Explorer And Frontiersman
Daniel Boone, an American explorer and frontiersman, was born November 2, 1734 in Berks County,
Pennsylvania. Boone was fathered by a blacksmith and weaver, Squire Boone Sr. and nurtured by his
England emigrated mother, Sarah Morgan. Boone was the sixth born and received a skimp formal
education, for he learned to read and write from his mother. Boone acquired an education in
wilderness and survival skills from his father. Boone just like his father had a niche for woodsmanship
and hunting, for at the age of twelve he shot his first bear. In 1755, Daniel Boone left home for a
military expedition that was a part of the French and Indian War. Boone served as a teamster who
drove supplies by wagon for Brigadier General Edward Braddock, ... Show more content on

As they blazed the trail that would soon lead to colonization in the Middle West they were faced with
many adversities, because the path through the wilderness was too narrow for wagons due to the fact it
was originally a hunter s trail. The Wilderness Road was steep and rough, and could only be traveled
by foot or horseback, despite that drawback thousand of settlers descended up the trail to the new
discovered land.
Upon arrival in Kentucky, Daniel Boone and his men began the construction of temporary log huts,
Fort Boone, in which he would capture settlement from the Indians. Boone s settlement received
tension from the local Shawnee and Cherokee tribes, for the tribes were flustered with Boone and his
people captivating their territory. In the summer of 1776 the Indian tribes kidnapped Boone s second
daughter, Jemima, as well as two other teenage girls fortunately Boone and a group of settlers were
able to rescue his daughter and two girls just two days after being captured because Boone knew the
ways of the Indians as well as wilderness skills. Boone and his men surrounded the Indians while they
stopped for food and rescued the girls and drove off the kidnappers. The rescuing of Boone s daughter
is one of his most noted events in his life, James Fenimore Cooper fictionalized this event in his novel,

Narrative Essay On Thomas Paine
Thomas Paine once declared, The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. I understand
exactly what Paine expresses here. People admire items in life if they are forced to strive to obtain
them. If these items come to them too easily, they will not appreciate them as much. Consequently,
when obstacles or conflicts arrive, people must learn to use their skills and resources to resolve them.
One major conflict in my life began the first week of summer before my freshman year of high school.
I was practicing at my competitive cheerleading gym, when my life was unexpectedly turned upside
down. While performing a back walkover back handspring, there was a loud pop as I hyperextended
my right elbow, tearing both my muscle and my ulnar collateral ligament. I promptly sunk to my
knees and began sobbing. The next thing I knew, I was laboriously working through physical therapy
at NASA Bone Joint Specialist instead of relaxing at the beach. This unexpected injury would
manifest to be a significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I met with Dr. O Neill and was asked to complete five push ups to test whether or not my ligament had
properly healed. Unfortunately, when he noticed that I was unable to complete the push ups, he knew
the ligament would require Tommy John surgery. After a substantial amount of research, my family
and I agreed that surgery was my only option. Even with the surgery, I would never be able to throw a
ball normally again without additional years of rehabilitation. Dr. O Neill s plan was to remove a
ligament out of my right wrist and insert it into my elbow, giving my elbow a brand new ligament.
Because he was to operate on my wrist in addition to my elbow, I would be unable to move my hand
or fingers for months. Losing the use of my dominant hand was a major obstacle, especially with my
first year of high school right around the

Music As Intellectual Property Summary
Music as intellectual property
The readings explore the concept of music as intellectual property and delve into the many issues that
consequently arise in the practice of musical borrowing or quoting, digital sampling and the Digital
rights management control over netizens .
Mc Leod introduces the issue of musical sampling as a copyright infringement with the example of
Danger mouse and his tribute to The Beatles and Jay Z in his Grey Album. As fans were warned to
cease and desist the author discusses cyber civil disobedience by providing a brief intro to musique
concrete as a pioneer of later cutting edge music as Danger mouse.
Mc leod describes Danger mouse use of preexisting music as sampled reinterpretation.
Under the current copyright ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By providing several musical examples ranging from Sinead O Connor to Lansky, he presents the
argument of digital samples as an art form where unlike musical quotations, a performance is what is
being borrowed resulting in a metamorphosis of the sample as it is presented in a new theme.
Yet isn t there something fundamentally different between such traditional acts of borrowing and
digital sampling? It is sometimes said that while a quotation is simply a representation of another
piece, a sampled passage of music is that music. But that depends on what the meaning of is is .
In the above statement, Katz brings us back the quintessential debate on what constitutes music, the
score, the sounds, recording, etc. By presenting musical example of centuries of musical quotations
such as L homme arme mass or Dies Irae, he underlines the differences between a musical quotation
and sampling
By breaking down Notjustmoreidlechatter by Lansky he challenges our perception on where
interpretation lies in a composition. Lansky s piece, he argues, makes the listener an active interpreter
since lanky has cut out the performer.

Book Review Of The BookHoles, By Louis Sachar
The title of the book I read is Holes, which was written by Louis Sachar. This classic is taken place
not far back in time, and is mostly placed at Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake is a detention camp
for troubled boys. It used to have a beautiful lake long ago, but after years and years the lake and the
town dried up. In the book s present time its dry land is used to teach the young men to clean up their
act. They must dig holes constantly with a specific diameter and depth. The heat is roaring and the
dangerous animals of the desert are mentioned. Stanley Yelnats is the main character who is from a
poor family. His family has very bad luck... they believe it s a curse from his great great grandfather.
This young innocent guy is still in his teen years. In the story Stanley is wrongly accused of stealing a
pair of shoes; he then went to court. He was lucky enough to have a choice to either go to jail for a
short period of time or to go to Camp Green Lake. Stanley thought the camp would be fun because he
has never been to one. When Stanley arrives at the camp he kind of feels intimidated because of all the
rough boys there. After accepting each other s differences they become friends then he meets Zero (his
actual name in the story is Hector.) That s what they call him because he doesn t know how to read
and he barely says anything. Yelnats feels bad about this, so with his free time he teaches Zero how to
read little by little. Soon after becoming close friends

  • 2. Incivilities In Neighborhood Neighborhood disorder, broadly defined as the social and physical incivilities within a neighborhood (Sampson Raudenbush, 1999), affects residents perceptions of fear and safety (Austin, Furr Spine, 2002; Yavuz Welch, 2010). Social incivilities could include drunk people in public space or panhandlers while physical incivilities include litter or deliberate property damage. Wilson s and Kelling s broken windows theory (1982) provides social sciences with the most well known model of neighborhood disorder, which posits that the presence of physical and social incivilities lead to greater fear among neighborhood residents. Consequently, a cycle of perpetual social breakdown within the neighborhood occurs. Many others have since examined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, very little is known about how other types of community violence (e.g., robberies/muggings, gang fights, and fights with weapons) affect women s perceptions of safety. Furthermore, even less is known about how men respond to violence within their neighborhoods. The literature suggests that men are more prone to fears of confrontation or robbery, therefore, men s perceptions of safety may revolve around community violence, such as robberies/muggings, gang fights, or fights with weapons, and less around sexual ... • 3. Comparison of Whitman and Dickenson Poems America experienced profound changes during the mid 1800 s. New technologies and ideas helped the nation grow, while the Civil War ripped the nation apart. During this tumultuous period, two great American writers captured their ideas in poetry. Their poems give us insight into the time period, as well as universal insight about life. Although polar opposites in personality, Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman created similar poetry. Dickinson s Hope is a Thing with Feathers and Whitman s O Captain! My Captain! share many qualities. br br Hope is a Thing with Feathers and O Captain! My Captain! contain a similar scansion. Both have a predominantly iambic meter. The unaccented beat followed by the accented beat creates a rising ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike in Dickinson s poem, the rhyming scheme carries throughout the whole poem, although the AABBCDED rhyme pattern contains a few cases of near rhyme. br br Dickinson and Whitman also use similar poetic devices in Hope is a Thing with Feathers and O Captain! My Captain! Each poem contains an extended metaphor. In Dickinson s poem, a bird clearly symbolizes hope. The first stanza introduces the bird metaphor: ‘Hope is the thing with feathers /That perches in the soul. The next lines ‘And sings the tune without the words /And never stops—at all— illustrate the interminable nature of the bird and hope. The second stanza expands the metaphor by saying ‘And sweetest—in the Gale—is heard—. The bird s song, or hope, is the sweetest during a Gale, or troubled times. The first lines in the final stanza ‘I ve heard it in the chillest land / And on the strangest Sea describe the bird, or hope, as being everywhere. The last lines ‘Yet, never, in Extremity,/It asked a crumb—of Me show the unselfish nature of the bird; hope never asks for anything in return. O Captain! My Captain! contains a more complicated and cryptic extended metaphor. Basically, Abraham Lincoln captains the metaphorical ship of the United States through the Civil War. The second line ‘The ship has weather d every rack, the prize we sought is won means the United States survived the tribulation of the Civil War, and the citizens won the prize they sought, unity. • 4. Thesis Statement On Standardised Testing Standardised Testing Thesis Standardised testing is something every high school student has to go through as it is a crucial and stressful part of the college application process. During their junior year, high school student s stress levels increase as they have to take both the SATs/ACTs and AP tests. The SAT was introduced in 1926 and since then it has slowly become more integrated into the standard procedure in order to get into a university. The AP is an understandable test as it tests students on what they studies in class; the SAT on the other hand requires students to do all the learning and studying on their own time. Some students may even pay hundreds of dollars on the test prep books and classes on top of the already expensive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One source suggests that they have been tax exempt since 2003, but it is not clear if they still are. What is being done now? According to FairTest.org, there are over 900 universities in the US, out of about 4,000, that don t require SAT or ACT scores. The University of New Hampshire stopped accepting standardised test scores altogether; the president of the university commented that after doing so the quantity of applications went down, but the quality went up as they found that the applicants collectively were more mature and motivated mainly because the application process became harder with the increased focus on essay submission. There has been an SAT optional movement in which many liberal arts colleges in the US decided not to require SAT or ACT scores as they thought it had outlived its usefulness. The former president of Sarah Lawrence College stated that We are a writing intensive school, and the information produced by SAT scores added little to our ability to predict how a student would do at our college; it did, however, do much to bias admission in favor of those who could afford expensive coaching ... • 5. How Does Titan Affect The Life On Titan However, if life had somehow developed in these cold and hydrophobic bodies of liquid methane and ethane, its surface to volume ratio considerations may be less constraining than at higher temperatures in polar solvents. On Earth, lower temperatures create a more viscous solvent, causing slower diffusion and rate of metabolism. If this applies to Titan, life there could involve huge (by Earth standards) and very slowly metabolizing cells. This would slow evolution down significantly, instead having potentially longer lived organisms, especially since atmospheric tholins reduce the radiation damage they receive significantly (Schulze Makuch 1480 1481). Having slow metabolic processes and slow evolutionary capabilities may not be advantageous on Titan with its frequently changing surface liquid conditions if the life depends on being within the hydrocarbon liquids for survival. In order to cope with the rapid changes, life on Titan could go into a form of suspended animation while the surface liquids are in their period of evaporation and reanimate with its return, a successful survival method for the tardigrade. Another option would be that it does not require being in a liquid for survival, instead utilizing the products of photolysis, aerosols and tholins, that could cover Titan s surface with 100 200 metres and more (Simakov 395), as some anaerobic bacteria on Earth are capable of fulfilling their energy and nitrogen needs through the consumption of tholins ... One could hardly imagine that his creature of the night would delight and inhabit the nightmares of every generation between his and ours. Count Dracula has become an icon of evil, and is perhaps the most widely recognized bogeyman in all of world literature. To date, there have been over one hundred films made about Dracula or other assorted vampires, not to mention countless novels, comic books, nonfiction works, toys, clubs and societies even a children s breakfast cereal celebrating the myth of the undead count. Stoker was mesmerized by Irving s charismatic performance, but was disappointed to find only a cursory mention of the event in the next day s Dublin Evening Mail. A second tour by Irving four years later produced an equally unsatisfactory mention in the Mail, prompting an outraged young Stoker to march into the offices of the newspaper and offer himself for the unpaid position of theater critic. He got the job, and as a result, when Irving (now a star of the London stage) returned to Dublin a third time, this time to star in Hamlet, Stoker had the opportunity to set down in print glowing praises of his favorite actor. Irving read the review and was delighted to the extent that he invited the young critic to supper at his hotel, and began a friendship that would last for almost thirty years. In the years between 1870 and 1877, Stoker, yielding to his father s wishes, followed him into a career as civil servant in Dublin Castle. However, Stoker maintained ties to Trinity College, returning there frequently to speak on a wide range of topics for the Philosophical Society. In 1878, Irving took over ownership and renovation of London s Lyceum Theatre, and asked Stoker to come to London to manage the theater and Irving s career. THE MAIN FACTORS LED TO THE COLLAPSE When the words spread about the large size of fishery, fleets from all over the world joined the hunt. Every year, the size of the fleets got bigger and every year, the size of the catch increased. In the late 50s the arrival of large factor ships from other countries hailed the first onslaught to the finely balanced renewable cod fishery. In Newfoundland over 35,000 fishers and plant workers from over 400 coastal communities became unemployed in 1992 (Collapse of the Atlantic Northwest Cod Fishery). * ECOLOGICAL: The Atlantic cod fishery collapse left terrible ecological consequences. As mentioned above, the fishing technology was a major destruction to the ecological system by using deployment and draggers. The huge nets that were dropped and dragged along the bottom of the ocean destroyed the underlying eco system in the process. The effect of selective fishing on spawning grounds that is, selectively over exploiting one species in an ecosystem had disastrous effect on the feeding relationships in that ecosystem. This contributes to the overall reduction of spawning stock biomass of the targeted species, but also an increase in the number of invertebrate and vertebrate predators such as crustacean and fish which will prey on cod eggs, larvae, and younger fish. It is a little wonder that a species like cod, would eventually run into difficulties struggling to survive when its habitat is being continuously destroyed and the balance of their food chain had been wiped out. • 13. Richard Berry s Original Versions Of The 1963 Version... Originally recorded in 1956 by Richard Berry, Louie Louie is best known for the 1963 version recorded by The Kingsmen. Richard Berry was a rhythm and blues singer of the 1950s while The Kingsmen were a 1960s garage band. The two different versions of this song are similar, however they feature differences in many areas such as style, sound, lyrics, and instrumentation. The different versions also offer different cultural significances, despite Berry being the original writer of the song The Kingsmen s cover achieved greater success and popularity. Berry harmonizes well with his backup singers, and is clearly comprehensible throughout the whole passage. On the contrary, Ely s voice sounds unrehearsed and often as if he is yelling the song rather than singing it. Ely s voice is often masked by the instrumentation, and incomprehensible at some points. These characteristics can be noted clearly at the one minute mark of the video, at this point Ely sounds as if though he is yelling, is masked by the instrumentation, and cannot easily be understood. Berry clearly enunciates his speech while Ely slurs his words and varies in volume throughout the song. Part of these differentiations could be due to the fact that The Kingsmen were a garage band, they had little formal training and recorded on simple equipment, potentially leading to the rough sound of Ely s voice. The multiple differences between Berry and Ely s voices give rise to a distinct sound for each version. Lyrically, the verses of both of these songs are very similar, while the choruses are more different. Both versions feature imperfect grammar, using phrases such as Me catch a ship across the sea, instead of I catch a ship. This substitution of me for I can be heard multiple times throughout both versions of the song. The lyrics used in the verses of The Kingsmen s cover are nearly identical to the lyrics used in Berry s original version. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Implications Of Genetically Engineered Foods Genetically engineered foods are defined as foods that have had genes from other animals or plants (hereby referred to as foreign genes) added onto their genetic codes. The genetic engineering technique can be employed on animals, plants, or on such microorganisms as bacteria (NIH). The question of whether foods derived from such organisms should be approved for human consumption is what has raised widespread controversy among many circles. There are those who view GM foods as the ultimate solution to major challenges of the 21st century while others see them as a threat to human health and the environment. Notably, the global society is facing major challenges key among them being food insecurity and environmental issues such as global warming and climate change. Genetically engineered foods present a potential solution to these challenges. This paper will argue that with adequate research and regulation, genetically engineered foods should be approved owing to the benefits they present in terms of increased food production and quality, as well as eliminating the need to compromise the environment in the pursuit of more cultivation land and higher crop yield. In my view, we certainly need genetically engineered foods to fight food insecurity that characterizes the global society. A look at related statistics denotes a population that is facing serious food security challenges. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), an estimated 795 million ... Behaviorists argue that people are not born with a violent disposition; rather they learn to think and act violently as a result of their everyday experiences (Bandura, 1977). Albert Bandura (1977) states behavior is learned from the environment through the process of observational learning. This popular behavioral notion is known as the social learning theory. Bandura believes that humans are active information processors and think about the relationship between their behavior and its consequences. Studies of family life, for example, show that aggressive children often model the violent behaviors of their parents. In 1961, Bandura conducted the famous bobo doll experiment in which children observed the people around them behaving in various ways. The experiment involved exposing children to two different adult models; an aggressive model and a non aggressive one. After observing the adults and their aggressive or non aggressive behavior, the children were later allowed to play in a room with the Bobo doll by themselves. When they played with the doll by themselves, alone in a room, they began to imitate the actions they had previously observed by the adults. • 20. What Is The Difference Between Dido And Aeneas The Roman myth of Dido and Aeneas as told by Vergil in his Aeneid was redone by Henry Purcell in 1689 in his opera Dido and Aeneas. Although the opera follows the overall storyline of the myth, there are several differences between the retelling and the original myth. These differences affecting the message the myths convey and reflecting the time period they were written in. In Vergil s version Aeneas and the other refugees ships crash in North Africa due to a storm Juno asks the king of the winds, Aeolus, to create. Venus, wanting her son Aeneas to be safe sends Cupid to make Queen Dido of Carthage fall in love with Aeneas. Aeneas arrives at Carthage where Dido offers them refuge, one day she and Aeneas go hunting and get caught up in a storm. Seeking shelter, they end up alone together and succumb to their passions, causing Dido to break her vow of chastity. A vow she made when her late husband, Sychaeus, was murdered by her brother causing her to flee her home kingdom and found Carthage. The news of the affair spreads and is heard by a neighboring king who the Queen had rejected due to her vow. In his anger the king asks for Jupiter s help who sends Mercury to tell Aeneas that he needs to continue his journey to Italy. Dido is angry with Aeneas leaving, but he tells her it is not his destiny to stay, in the end she threatens to kill herself if he leaves. As Aeneas sails away, Dido curses him with her last breath, the smoke from her funeral pyre rising into the sky where Aeneas can see it. Aeneas meets Dido one last time when he travels to the underworld, but this does not come up in Henry Purcell s retelling. In Henry s version of Dido and Aeneas, Aeneas crash is not shown he simply appears in front of Queen Dido and they profess their feelings for each other. The second difference in the myths is that in this version there are witches and a sorcerer that work together to destroy the Queen and Carthage who they hate. To do this they create a storm while Dido, Aeneas and their entourage are out hunting forcing the party to return to the castle. Aeneas is the last to leave and before he joins the party the witches send an elf disguised as Mercury with a message that the gods are angry with him for his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Book Review Of The BookHoles, By Louis Sachar The title of the book I read is Holes, which was written by Louis Sachar. Stanley Yelnats is the main character who is from a poor family. His family has very bad luck... they believe it s a curse from his great great grandfather. This young innocent guy is still in his teen years. In the story Stanley is wrongly accused of stealing a pair of shoes; he then went to court. After accepting each other s differences they become friends then he meets Zero (his actual name in the story is Hector.) Soon after becoming close friends ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
