Fahrenheit 451 Social Commentary Analysis
Fahrenheit 451 is full of obvious social commentary. All kinds of examples can be
found in every chapter in the book. The book has no lack of stylistic elements
either. The book is about a dystopian world where books have been made illegal to
own, but some people have realized the good uses of books. The author uses this
book to say a few things of his own, but also points out that books help us as humans
see things that are wrong with society. Ray Bradburyuses stylistic elements such as
satire in order to talk about problems in society such as censorshipand our reliance on
technology. As said, the author uses this book to talk about censorship in society, and
also our reliance on technology. Censorship can be seen in the book just from
Circuit City History
Sam Wurtzel first created Circuit City, under the name of Wards Co., on September
13th 1949 in Richmond Virginia. Wurtzel was getting a haircut when he learned that
the first commercial television station would be going on air in Richmond, which
inspired him to open a store to sell television sets because he knew consumer interest
in the new local broadcasts would only increase. In the next ten years this small
company expanded itself by acquiring several television and appliance stores
throughout the U.S., which included Richmond, Alabama, Washington, New York,
and California. In 1960 Wards Co. also expanded its operations into licensed
television departments within large department stores, which led the company to
offer stocks to the public for the first time. By 1965, Wards had added various
acquisitions to its existing portfolio, which included a discount department storethat
sold automotive and household supplies, home appliances, and clothing as well as a
Delaware company that operated household and hardware sales in department stores
around the Southeast. Not only did Wards grow increasingly through acquisition, it
also grew because of its reputation and commitment to customer service by being
one of the first companies to offer a service plan for its TV sets. The company
continued its rapid acquisition strategy through the beginning of the1970 s, but by
1974, Wards began to suffer adverse effects of this of rapid over diversification into
such non core business
Gadsden Purchase
The Gadsden Purchase of 1853 is one of the most monumental land purchases in
United States history. In basic terms, the Gadsden Purchase was an area of land that
was acquired by the United States from Mexico in order to build a railway for the
transportation of goods in the South from East to West in order to fulfill Manifest
Destiny. Throughout this paper, I hope to accurately navigate through the events prior
to the Gadsden Purchaseas well as the early life of James Gadsden. Although many
topics relate to the purchase itself, I will offer a historical view into Gadsden s life
before, after, and during the purchase as well as a more in depth look into the Treaty
of Guadalupe Hidalgo. I shall also touch base on why the land was so... Show more

They called it the Gadsden Purchase, which the United States agreed to pay Mexico
ten million dollars for thirty eight thousand square miles of land. Ten million dollars
back in 1853 is equivalent to two hundred and eighty million dollars today. The
Southern transcontinental railroad that James Gadsden had dreamed up was never
built.
The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican American war in 1848
was a very important decision in our history. We allowed the Mexican government
to keep Mesilla Valley in place of them giving us the Santa Rita Mountains. We
believed that we would profit off of this compromise due to the fact that we
thought there was rich copper deposits, and some silver and gold which had not
yet been mined. Little did we know that the Mesilla Valley was essential for the
construction of a Southern Transcontinental Railroad. The reason it was important
for the railroad was because it consisted of flat desert land about fifty miles north to
south and 200 miles wide, east to west. There were two parcels of the land that
President Pierce instructed Gadsden to try and buy. The Baja California Peninsula
was the first for fifty million dollars or the thirty eight thousand square miles of dry
arid desert. Santa Ana needed money badly to help build up his army to defend
against the very people wanting to pay him, the United States. He thought the best
solution was to sell as little land as possible for the most
Gullivers Travels Comparison Between Book and Movie
Essay
Gullivers Travels Comparison Between Book and Movie It is common in today s
media driven society to reach into the past for inspiration and ideas. A trend has
developed where original works are transformed into other mediums. For example:
books are turned into movies and/or plays, movies are turned into weekly sitcoms,
and cartoons will spawn empires (Disney). These things happen so often that an
audience rarely stops to question the level of authenticity that remains after these
conversions. Perhaps it is only when a project is not well received that people begin
to think of the difficulties involved with changing a work s genre. Using Gulliver s
Travelsas an example, discrepancies and additions in the movie can be... Show more

Cobwebs and dust obscure the sign at first, but Gulliver breaks down the barrier
and wipes the sign to reveal that he has found the Room of Answers. He enters the
room and asks if the man there can tell him the way back to England. The man turns
around and Gulliver is looking at an exact replica of himself. This second Gulliver
states You know the way home, but you ll never find it because deep in you heart,
you don t want to to which the original Gulliver replies That s not true!
The scene described above appears to be quite critical to the plot development in
the movie. However, this appears nowhere in the original text. The viewer must
ask him/herself why this was added and the consequences of the change. The
movie version of this story portrays Gulliver as a travel that has been gone for eight
consecutive years and had been searching for his way home the entire time. He
merely falls into unfortunate circumstances that prevent this return. In the book,
however, it is less clear that Gulliver desires to be home at all. He very rarely
speaks of his family and seems to have little emotion at being reunited with them
after each journey or when he leaves them again. The movie s alternate portrayal of
Gulliver seems incongruent with the added scene. Instead, this extra scene would
appear to make more sense if the character of Gulliver was depicted as he was in the
book.
California Government Research Paper

California Politics and Government California is the wealthiest and most diverse
state in the country. Just like the National government, California is comprised of
three branches; Legislative, Executive and Judicial. The legislative branch is the
largest, and is made up of the state Senate and Assembly. The Assembly consists of
eighty representatives, one from each county, to serve for up to three two year terms.
The California Senate holds forty Senators, who are allowed a maximum of two four
year terms. The Executive branch consists of the state Governor and a group of
elected constitutional officers. The final branch, the Judicial branch, is made up of
California s supreme court, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We see that the passage of these initiatives affected the ability of the legislature to
create important policies. Proposition 140 is a reform initiative that drastically
changed the fundamentals of the legislative system. This proposition halted the
cycle of institutional knowledge for legislators who become experts in certain
policies. They are barred from running for office once the term limit is fulfilled. In
the bigger picture, legislative committee leaders are sometimes new legislators who
do not have expertise in the policy. This is problematic because lack of expertise
hinders the creation of innovative and effective policy. Proposition 140 created a
better over turn thus, giving minorities and women the chance to represent their
constituents; the point of the term limit was to repopulate the legislature. By creating
this constant repopulation, it allows expertise to be achieved by legislators but it
bars them to contribute into policy making once their term limit is achieved.
Proposition 118 on the other hand intends to change the composition of the
legislature but makes it harder for redistricting to occur. By passing Proposition 118,
the legislature will not be able to represent the people of California accurately; thus,
creating policy problems since enacted policies will not
Advantages And Disadvantages Of E Learning Essay
1.Introduction
E learning has contributed into a technology driven paradigm that has transformed the
educational processes by providing creativity, innovation and diverse styles in
teaching and learning. In nutshell, it is transferring of knowledge and information to
learners using Information and Communication Technologies. E learningis delivery of
contents using extensive technological tools and computers with an intention to
provide autonomy and flexibility to learners as well as teachers. The term E learning
is interchangeably used with related terms like virtual learning, online learning, web
based learning, internet learning, distributed learning, networked learning, tele
learning, computer assisted learning, web based learning and the likes. However,
broadly e learning refers to delivery of learning objects using electronic technologies.
Ally Mohamed (2004) defines online learning as the use of the Internet to access
learning materials; to interact with the content, instructor, and other learners; and to

The Effects of Stuttering
The Effects of Stuttering
Throughout the modern era stuttering has caused many individuals to reshape the
way they act or think. For people affected by stuttering, alterations are real and hard
to overcome. Much of the world is based on first impressions; the way one acts and
converses is an essential building block in relationships, and it helps one to establish
an identity for themselves and others to perceive. With stuttering comes several
downturns that affect the mind, body, and the way one is perceived. Researchers
have noted many effects of stuttering besides those that are physical, and by
understanding the causes of stuttering, researchers may find a cure for these
individuals.

Stuttering typically develops through childhood and adolescence, but many children
have the chance at spontaneously recover (Forester Webster, 2001). This still leaves
those who do not spontaneously recover at a loss on how to become cured.
Treatments
Researchers have proposed that stuttering treatment, particularly for adults and
children who stutter, benefit from more creative and extensive use of functional
measurements. Many methods can be educated to produce more individually
significant and evidence based treatment benefits. They may be extremely helpful
when employed in compilation with self management and performance contingent
procedures, (Ingham, Ingham, Bothe, 2012).
These tools are significant to help a being with a stuttering disorder improve, but is
there anything that can be done to fully cure stuttering? Pharmacists from Finland
say that they have found a cure to stuttering. Hirven Sarven Tippoja, or elk horn
drops, has intrigued and been regarded for use by the U.S. Vice Consul in Finland;
however, despite its claim that it can cure stuttering, it is still considered a faulty
source of medicine (Emerick, 1967). Considering the amount of people who are
diagnosed with stuttering, there is no definite cure. For an in depth analysis,
researchers must pinpoint the exact area or problem with stuttering and work
Film Piracy and It s Effects in the Industry
Film Piracy and its effect on the Industry
Five Advantages of Film Piracy:
These are the advantages one might see for why to commit film piracy, but I by

Sometimes one may have the advantage of seeing a film before it is released on DVD
It s been made a lot easier to get ahold of pirated films and can usually be

one can peer to peer share with friends
One might see it as free publicity for the film

I wonder if this is really Hollywood s way of two tiered marketing. Supply movie
theatres with blockbuster releases and make huge profits at concession stands as
well as the box office then market bootlegs (Yes, I am asking aloud if they might be
in on it) to the people who cannot afford to enjoy the deluxe movie experience.
They look at us as losers, a negligible group on the margins of society and would
rather we be kept out of their shiny cineplexes, lest our BO offend the other patrons
or we try to pester them for spare change.
Piracy is a thorny issue in the Philippines. I think very few here can be holier than
thou and say they haven t bought a pirated game, bootleg DVD or other counterfeit
good at some point. Yet most of us agree that piracy is a crime.
Read my Infotech article Game piracy may be financing other crimes: ESA exec,
based on my e mail interview with Ric Hirsch, senior vice president for intellectual
property enforcement of the Entertainment Software Association. ESA is the US
industry association representing the world s biggest game publishers, and is the
owner and operator of Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).
I ve already gotten feedback from those who feel it s absurd to link game piracy to
organized crime. I think this really shows how we as consumers see piracy in terms
mainly of getting a bargain, and that most of us think it s a victimless crime. But
The Roman Empire And The Rise And Fall Of The Papacy
For centuries the Vatican has occupied a unique position in history, exercising both
sacred and secular power in activities that have generated as much fascination as
controversy. Yet, for most people it remains a mysterious institution. One whose
motives and maneuvers are not easily understood. From the struggles of the very
first Christians to the challenges and scandals of today, the Catholic Church has
wrestled with how to organize itself, express its beliefs, and nurture its members.
The church has grown from a handful of disciples in the first century to over one
billion members in the twenty first, resulting in profound changes that demand a
theological response. A candid but rational inquiry into the progress and
establishment of Christianity may be considered a very essential part of the history
of the Roman Empire and the rise and fall of the papacy. The history of the Papacy
began over two thousand years ago with the reign of John Paul II. Peter, the humble
fisherman of Galilee and an Apostle of Jesus Christ, became the figure head and the
basis for the institution that has outlined not only the Roman and Byzantine empires
but also the Carolingian Gaul, medieval Germany, Spain, Britain, the Third Reich of
Hitler, and the Soviet Union. Jesus tells Peter, And I say also unto thee, that thou art
Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not
prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven:
Sports Journalism Essay
Sports Journalism
For my career research paper I have chosen to delve into the world of the
sportswriter, and take a closer look at what that occupation may hold for myself. I
have chosen to research this form of journalism because I consider myself to be a
sports fanatic, and would very much enjoy spending the rest of my working days
writing about the conditions in the world of sports. During the last year or so I
have taken a period of time everyday to relax and read over sports articles from
baseball and football at some of my favorite websites, such as espn.com or
nesn.com, or to sit down and watch Sports Center on ESPN. I also seem to have an

Writers are found in their office in the morning, and they have afternoons off unless
there is a game or interview that they are supposed to cover. Nights are spent covering
an event or interview and then writing the article for it afterwards that night
(Heitzman 44). Sports journalism can be a difficult occupation at times, but it can also
be very rewarding. To help cover games better writers get tickets for excellent seats
at all events they are assigned to, they meet with sports stars and coaches (if they are
not a writer in a small town newspaper), and sometimes you travel abroad to cover
events (Heitzman 44).
A sportswriter in a small town newspaper would be one of two employees in the
sports section. The other employee is the editor. The small town newspaper
sportswriter collects information about local teams and games and writes about
them. National stories are often taken from acclaimed papers such as The
Associated Press (Heitzman 44). In a larger city s newspaper, the sports department
may have 10 employees. All of these employees have a certain sport that they excel
in writing about, such as football, baseball, hockey, basketball, golf, or high school
sports (Heitzman 44).
Sportswriters oftentimes will work odd hours. Writers for morning newspapers will
work in the afternoon and evening five days a week including Saturday. That
Synaptic Connections
The weakening of synaptic connections is not the only mechanism involved in
transience, there is also evidence that complete synaptic elimination either through
shrinkage or loss of spines can be responsible for a portion of natural forgetting. This
relationship between synaptic elimination and natural forgetting has been observed in
the nematode C. elegans. In C. elegans associative learning induces synapse growth at
a specific neuron. However, after a few hours the modified synapse shrinks and
reverts back to its original native state, this change back to its native state is also
accompanied by the loss of the associative memory. [6] This means that if there many
instances of synapse shrinking occurring over time it can lead to a... Show more

These rearrangements are integral to the adaptive nature of the brain and crucial to its
many functions. However, having a continuous stream of new synapse appearing and
modifying the connectivity patterns of a finite space must lead to the removal of
some data in order to maintain an efficient system; this means that processes that
promote the remodeling of the brain also promote instability within some of the
connections and in turn transience. [3] This promotion of transience by neurogenesis
has been observed and confirmed by various recent studies of rodents. One of these
studies observed the stability of perforant path dentate gyrus long term potentiation in
awake, active rats. Researchers in this study monitored the strength of perforant path
dentate gyrus in multiple rats over several weeks. They found that in the control
group the rat s long term potentiation reverted back to baseline within approximately
a week, but in the group of rats that were irradiated in order to eliminate hippocampal
neurogenesis, long term potentiation was prolonged with potentiation still observable
after 2 weeks. [7] These results show a strong correlation between the promotion of
neural connection re arranging via neurogenesis and inducing the decay of long term
potentiation, conversely the prevention of neural connection re arranging was shown
to promote persistence of long term potentiation. A second study involving mice was

Comparing Wilfred Owen And Jarrell
War Poetry: Analysis
Both Owen and Jarrell share the pains of war. Using literary devices such as
diction, imagery, and inner thoughts. Besides just the basics of literary devices the
poets also use their close affiliation of war to help express the true disasters that not
many people knew of. They possessed unusual sensibility. When digging a little
deeper you are fully able to compare Owen s Dulce et Decorum Est and Jarrell s
Death of the Ball Turret Gunner.
At first glance Wilfred Owen s Dulce et Decorum Est is blatantly organized. In fact, it
is comprised of multiple stanzas. But that is Owen s purposeful structure. When
delving further into the poem you truly start to see Owen s intentions. While some
poets romanticized war, Wilfred
Bartleby The Scrivener Character Analysis
In Melville s Bartleby the Scrivener , the narrator is on the hunt for a new copyist
in his office. From what we can tell of our narrator, he is an unambitious, vanilla
fellow but still has an air of condescension about him. He always thinks that he
knows what is best for his employees, although in actuality, he knows very little.
Enter Bartleby: the incurably forlorn and sedate answer to his prayers (330).
Bartleby is a quiet man who gains employment at the law office of our narrator.
Overall, he seemed to be a good worker who had a few kinks the narrator thought
that he could iron out, but to no avail. At the end of his account, the narrator says Ah
Bartleby, Ah humanity which suggests that he sees Bartleby as a representation of
all people. This is because the narrator thinks of Bartleby and all other people as
lesser than him and in need of his help.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He just had a few idiosyncrasies that irk the narrator, and among them are what
come to be known as dead wall reveries (338). Bartleby would often gaze out of his
window at the view, which was nothing more than a big old brick wall. Hours and
hours would pass of Bartleby not doing his work, and not even doing something
for his own entertainment like reading the newspaper or drinking, like the other
copyists did. His time was consumed by these reveries, and also by not doing
anything that he did not prefer. Readers can interpret Bartleby s actions as a
representation of his hopelessness. When a character looks out of a window, it can
show the reader how he sees the world. For Bartleby, his vision is fixed on a dead
wall. The view he has of the world is dead and despairing. He doesn t want to do
anything productive because he is so fixed on his lifeless
Federal Bureau Of Investigations And The Central...
Abstract Upon analyzing 9/11 it was clear to focus on the limitations that the Federal
Bureau of Investigations and the Central Intelligence Agency had faced. Security
breaches and poor intelligence sharing were just some of the critical failures that were
encountered. Moreover, the main focus is pointed towards the miscommunication
between these two agencies. Evidently, the execution and tactical strategies went
unnoticed despite the apparent red flags that presented themselves, in addition to the
Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Central Intelligence Agency failure to
pursue threats and establish a baseline of security resulted in the disaster of 9/11. In

By disregarding cues of possible terrorist attacks and constant mistakes within the
American Intelligence for not planning ahead, the United States failed to achieve its
number one goal as a governing body: not keeping its citizens safe. It is important to
dig into the issue of the disaster of 9/11 and completely understand the reason for
failed prevention efforts. Moreover adding to these issues was the lack of
communication and information shared between the two agencies, the Federal
Bureau of Investigations and Central Intelligence Agency.
When something tragic, devastating even happens, you remember exactly where
you were, who you were with, what you were doing, and how old you were when
it happened. Whether you want to remember it or not is out of your control. It is
tattooed in your brain for good. The moment everyone in America shares in
common is September 11, 2001 when the World Trade Centers were attacked by 19
al Qaeda terrorists. The entire nation went into an immediate state of mourning and
panic as they were discovering the victims of the attacks. Many often asked if there
was something that could have been done to maybe have prevented this from
happening. Was there something on the federal side that could have been done?
What else went wrong other than a blatant attack on the United States? When the
United States was attacked on September 11, I was only 8 years old in

citizens to have freedom of speech? Speech is an important way of expressing
ourselves and our opinions through verbal communication. Now in our bill of rights
speech is defined as many different forms of communication such as music, poetry,
television, and even clothing. College student are usually some of the strongest users
of freedom of speech. During college many students sometimes take part in protest
and very often are required to write some form of writing exercise that could be
controversial. Without freedom of speech these protest and articles could be
deemed illegal and in some countries it is illegal. Countries such as north Korea are
not able to speak freely and the majority of countries have heavy censorship placed

He asks the sages to help him in this conversion by asking them to consume my
heart away (Yates line 21). This statement makes the reader believe that the
speaker is surrendering to and seeking for a spiritual rebirth from a divine being.
The speaker begins to imagine a time, maybe in the after life, where he can be
preserved. He decides he will preserve himself in unnatural things, such as art when
he says, Once out of nature I shall never take / [m]y bodily form from any natural
thing. The speaker eventually becomes satisfied as he pictures himself in the after
life of hammered gold and gold enameling / To keep a drowsy emperor awake,

The poem The Red Wheelbarrow, by William Williams, can be interpreted in several
ways. The first thing that stands out is that it seems as if every line depends on the
next. The way Williams separates each sentence, makes the reader realize that
everyone and everything depends on someone or something else. For example, if
the reader reads line 1 3 he/she would think that so much depends / upon / a red
wheel (Williams lines 1 3). However, after reading the next line barrow (Williams
line 4) one learns that it is a red wheelbarrow that so much depends on. The red
wheel depends on the barrow to be a helpful tool; the wheel would be useless without

Philip K. Dick s Analysis
Philip K. Dick s exegesis, above being a theological exploration, is a philosophical
and cosmological investigation into the world and being. Philip K. Dick attempts to
understand his own being and his surrounding world by alluding to the existing
knowledge of the past while arriving at something new on his own. My Focus on this
paper is on an excerpt of his work from pages 606 to 608 that mainly focuses on three
themes. These themes that reappear throughout his work include the concept of time
and a time outside of time, as we understand it, the distinction of the phenomenal and
the noumenal realm of existence and the interaction of the two, and the unitary nature
of the world and the divine. My aim in this paper is to carefully comprehend... Show

This argument implicitly denies the freedom of the will of humans, and claims
that we as beings are hard wired to follow along a certain path. Essentially, he does
this in several occasions such as claiming that each individual human being is
programmed uniquely in terms of (1) the signals he can and will encounter during
his life, and (2) according to the unique and special purpose set for him by his
creator (71). Dick either has to deny that humans have any freedom of the will and
agency as a being, or has to justify his assertion by finding a way around this claim.
There is however some improvement upon this argument where Dick claims, what
we are talking about then...is the Tao, which is real but does not exist, yet registers
on (mildly shapes) what does exist (729). This is certainly a departure from the
original comment by Dick as he changes his word from programmed into mildly
shapes , thus allowing for some type of agency for human beings as
Augustus s Res Gestae And The Juvenile Satire
Throughout both readings, the reader gets two drastically different accounts on how
Rome was under Augustus. Through Augustus s writing he depicts himself as being
a very fair and humble ruler, one who is fair to all gives opportunities to his enemies.
While on the other hand, the Juvenile Satire s depict Rome as a very dark place, with
Augustuss being a horrible ruler and ruining everything good about Rome. Having
these two depictions of Rome during the rule of Augustus is hard to see which one is
truthful. Augustus humbles himself and gives factual evidence along with dates,
while the JuvenalSatire absolutely destroy anything good about Augusts. Taking that
into account the Rome in Augustus Res Gestae would be the closest depiction of
what the real Rome was truly like during this time, this is because the reader cannot
look at the Satires without knowing that the writer truly hated Augustus and therefore
couldn t give an unbiased account on the events occurring during those times. In the
Res Gestae written by Augustus himself the reader can find that many times
throughout the writings that Augusts is trying to keep a historical account of all the
great things he has done, while at the same time staying humble. I rebuilt the Capitol
and the theater of Pompey, each work at enormous cost, without any inscription of
my name. Here Augustus writes about an amazing deed he did, but staying humble
and trying not to make Rome only about him, he rebuilds it and keeps it as it

The s Arms Down, Out Of Breath
Ebon put his arms down, out of breath. He imagined his master smiling and telling
him what a good job he had done. The thought made him swell with pride.
Something he saw yanked him out of his thoughts. The back of the crowd was
stirring. He turned and cut the man, who was about to be burned, loose. May the
King bless you! The man cried as he ran to the outstretched arms of his family.
Ebon smiled as a deep sense of satisfaction washed over him. He then turned and
pushed his way to the back of the crowd. He stood aghast at what he saw.
The two Dark Wizards that had killed Eldon were fighting each other! The boy had
drawn his sword and was hurling spheres of green light at the girl. The girl tried hard
to deflect all of them with her sword. Dark Wizards could not do shield spells. The
boy grabbed his sword with his other hand and pulled it apart. It split into two
swords! His voice roared like thunder. You are a disgrace to the Dark Wizards! You
are a disgrace to me!
The boy continued to yell a spell that Ebon had never heard before. Ebon could see
that the girl was beginning to lose the battle. He watched her swing her sword in
vain. She kept stumbling back. Finally, she tripped and fell over. Her sword clattered
a few feet away. Ebon found himself with an inner struggle. These were murderers.
They killed without hesitation. They were ruthless, unstoppable, and unforgiving. But
the boy was really about to kill her. Even if they were bad, he still felt a need to help.

Negative Effects Of Immigration
All they do is break families apart and bring mental health issues to the children
involved. This is called deportation. Deportation is to expel a foreigner from a
country on grounds of illegal status, and this happens in America frequently. Does
deportation affect Americans positively or negatively? Many say that having all these
illegal immigrants in America just costs America money and it takes away money
and jobs that would otherwise be for U.S. citizens. While others disagree and say that
immigrants have helped the economy greatly and if they are deported the economy
will suffer the consequences. Although, there are some positives when it comes to
deportation, the majority of its ripple effecthurts many Americans. The people that
pay the highest price for deportation are the families of mixed status that are being
broken apart.
In an article about the families involved with deportation the claim of the authors is
that deportation has many negative effects on the citizen children of immigrants. The
authors point out that the separation of these mixed status families causes many
mental illnesses for these kids that put their lives on pause. The authors claim is that
because these children were born in American soil they all have the right to the 14th
amendment, so they all have accorded birthright citizenship. The author demonstrates
throughout the article that even though these children were born here in America,
they often don t get the citizenship right because of
What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Plea
Bargaining
Plea bargaining is when the prosecutor and defendant make an arrangement in
which the defendant pleads guilty to a lesser charge. In hopes with the Judge being
lenient with their sentence. Many criminal cases are based off of plea bargaining, it
s a negotiation process where the defendant and the prosecutor discuss what charges
they will be accounted for if not all. Sometimes it may lead to a reduced sentence,
which also saves the time of everyone going through a trial and having to go through
the process of trying to solve a case. The judgecan not be there through the discussion
of the pleabargain, and nor does a plea bargain take place in a court room. Plea
bargaining is more of a private situation with just the prosecutor and defendant. It
also has it s advantages and disadvantages. Most times plea bargaining becomes
controversial, and It does get heated because no one wants to sit in prison. A crimeis a
crime and the person who commits the crime has to face the consequences of his/her
actions. Plea Bargaining just makes things a little more less complicated then what it
needs to be for a defendant and the prosecutor.
As mentioned earlier, plea bargaining has it s advantages and disadvantages. The
most obvious advantage would be receiving a shorter sentence, and less chargers on
ones record. A disadvantage would be that either way you still have to do time in
prison. Accepting a plea bargain is not easy at all, everything will depend on things
such as your criminal

Sri Lankan mobile telecommunication industry comprises of 5 companies i.e.
Dialog, Etisalat, Mobitel, Airtel and Hutch. The competition between the local
mobile operators has intensified over the last two years. The mobile market in Sri
Lanka has been functioning with a healthy annual growth rate for some years.
However, Sri Lanka s mobile penetration is low when compared to other developed

Mail Order Pharmacy And Hospice Pharmacy
Pharmacy is something that i didnt think about when i first started trying to get my
goals together . All I knew was that i wanted to work in the nursing field. As i
embark on my journey to become a pharmacy, i see it is more to it than just putting
things in the computer. I also learned that there a quite a few different types of
pharmacies. My top two choices were Mail Order Pharmacyand Hospice pharmacy .
THis two are very different but also similar at the same time . Being on the outside

very differently . Through my journey, i took interest in two more pharmacies .

This is helpful because there is a shortage of pharmacist . Another big advantage is
for the elderly . The elderly can not always get around like they need to ; This is
why telepharmacy is a great area to be in . Lastly , a big advantage is providing
overnight pharmacy services . Long term pharmacies on the other have a
disadvantage of high cost . Depending your condition you may need to be a facility
and you may not be able to afford it because your insurance does not cover it . It
sounds good but as you get older health services are very hard to cover. As i
research job openings, it seems like it would be better in a long term care pharmacy
than any other pharmacy . Long term care pharmacies are all over , and you can
never have too many pharmacy techs . But this also pushes me to push myself to
further my education in the nursing field . It get hard but its worth it

Analysis of Nuclear Terrorism Essay
Nuclear Terrorism is Possible, but Not Probable
Abstract: Terrorist groups constantly strive to obtain a legitimate nuclear warhead.
Iraq spent many years acquiring and constructing nuclear weapons but they were
invaded by the USA before completion of the weapons. Terrorist groups are acquiring
the materials necessary, but they have failed to enrich the nuclear materials to
weapon grade levels. Financial support, time, proper materials, advanced nuclear
reactors, and most importantly, experts in a variety of fields are necessary for the
construction of a nuclear bomb. These components combined make the challenge
very difficult for a terrorist group to succeed. Thus, a nuclear attack from a terrorist
group, however possible, is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For a basic nuclear weapons only a kilogram of plutonium is needed, but for
terrorist groups without access to advanced nuclear reactors, high levels of
plutonium and uranium must be obtained. Gram quantities of plutonium and
uranium can be purchased on the black market, but much more sizable amounts
must be located (Kamp 1996). Most terrorist groups would prefer to build a gun
type bomb for the nuclear explosion. This usually requires around 100 pounds of
uranium or plutonium. Once this is achieved, it is a great challenge to enrich the
plutonium and uranium to an extremely high grade, known as weapon grade or
bomb grade, necessary for a nuclear bomb. In fact, most seizures from the terrorist
groups are of relatively low grade weapon material and are not enough to fuel a
significant chemical reaction. In order to enrich the materials, terrorist groups must
locate large amounts of specialized gases, such as flourine. These gases are difficult
to purchase from companies due to the potential use of the gases.
Experts in physics, chemistry, electronics, and explosives with the technical know
how of the special apparatus and complex systems must be acquired to conduct the
assembly of the weapons. This is the most delicate and important component because
a successful nuclear explosion demands a complete chemical reaction which is highly
difficult to achieve. Millions of dollars
Karen Compano Murder
On July 1, 1992 Karen Compano went missing. Chris had worked in construction
and spent time in jail for petty theft. Karen was the bread winner. Neighbors heard
the familiar arguing of Karen and her Husband Chris. Karen was telling Chris he
needed to join a drug program for his drug problem. Chris said Karen left shortly
after for a walk. He then left to go to a bar and had a couple of drinks. The next day
Chris called Karen s work and when he was told she was not there he filed a missing
person s report with the police. The police checked the house and reported no foul
play. They noted that it was strange Karen left and did not take anything. It was as if
she disappeared off the face of the Earth .

Now they had to determine was it enough blood to be a homicide? They
reconstructed an experiment and the medical examiner claimed that the victim lost
over forty percent of their blood, so they did not survive it. Now that they knew
someone was murdered in the house, the next question in their head was is it Karen?
They had obtained blood samples from Karen s Mother, Sisters, Children, and Ex
Husband. They compared the known sample found on the carpet in the bedroom to
Karen s relatives. The key to this test was seeing if half of the DNA matched the
known sample to Karen s family. When it came back that it did match, they knew it
was Karen who was murdered in the bedroom.
Chris was now arrested. Prosecutors were confident that he would get convicted
even without the body and without the murder weapon. Right before the trial
began, Karen s body was found in a remote area off an interstate highway by kids on
dirt bikes. Under her body was a check to a New York gas station that she happened

The Cherry Orchard By Anton Chekov
The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have. As demonstrated by
this quotation from Vince Lombardi, a reflection of our worth derives from the effort
we put forward. Stories of successful citizens rising from the unknown to fame, or
poverty to wealth shows the common man that if they desire a similar outcome, there
exists a possibility of attaining a higher social status. Occasionally, as depicted in the
play The Cherry Orchardby Anton Chekov, instances where honest means to attain
fortune occasionally arise. By utilizing dialogue and direction, action, and images, he
makes clear the dishonest motives of the character Lopakhin, especially within the
third act. In order to obtain a new status within society, Lopakhin creates chaos in
order to ensure his future differs from his past, while controlling the destiny of those
who indirectly oppressed him through the development of a motive and acting on his
personal desires with no regard for the people around him.Without an initial
conversation regarding development, there exists no possibility for change. David
Ball, the author of Backwards and Forwards: A Technical Manual for Reading Plays
mentions, Talking is drama s most common activity. (Ball 27) then proceeds to
question the statement to continue his point by asking, What is it about talking that
connects it to recognizable human behavior? resulting in his answer of A human
being talks in order to get what he or she wants. (27). Within a play,
Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Careers
As many medical advances as there are today, numerous careers in a medical field
have a positive growth in job outlook. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
the diagnostic medical sonographer career field is projected to grow 26 percent
from 2014 to 2024. Research anticipates this field of study to grow at a much faster
pace than the average for all occupations. Resources also indicate that advances in
imaging technology will lead medical services to utilize it more in place of costly,
invasive procedures and less expensive equipment, which also means more
procedures will be conducted outside hospitals. It was found that in 2014, there were
approximately 60,700 individuals employed as a diagnostic medical sonographer.

A Student Desk That Will Be More Efficient For The
Students
For my design I will do a student desk that will be more efficient for the students to
work on. The age range for the desk can be from third graders to any age student.
For the desk I will be creating, the gender does not matter. The occupation for my
desk will be for students to work on and also have extra things to meet their needs.
This deskI will be creating could be for anyone, ranging from an amateur to a
professional. The desk could be for non disabled students to disabled students. The
target customer for the desk would be mostly students. Students need to have a
better desk, but they also need a place to put their computers or i pads too. It s a
very difficult process to take out a computer then put the computer back when you
re done. Some computers are sometimes also broken because other students used it,
or not charged at all. So, I will be making a compartment at the corner of the desk
where the computer ,or whatever you have, will be in the compartment at all times.
When you need it, you just push the desk down and it will rise up to show anything
you need with a hole that you can put a charger through it. The compartment also
needs to be big enough so anything would fit in it. There are many desksout in the
world, but many desks aren t fit to be for a student. When I researched student
desks I found that many desks weren t made to be for students. The desks were
very tiny and not big enough to hold books in. Some desks don t even have a place
to put books
Comparing Gospels Matthew And John
Both Gospels, Matthew, and John, tell their stories about Jesus Christ to different
audiences. For example, the Gospel Matthew was one of Jesus twelve disciples and
was an Apostle. Matthew, was a tax collector as well, who lived adequately because
of his occupation before becoming one of Jesus disciples. To be a true follower of
JesusChrist, Matthew left everything he had behind and was still tormented
regarding his faith in Jesus Christ. Matthew came from a Jewish background, and
due to this, Matthew wrote his stories strictly towards a Jewish audience to prove
that Jesus is the King of the Jews. According to Matthew chapter two verse two,
Coogan states, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we

What Is The Evolution Of RenпїЅ DescartesHistorical And...
To say that RenГ© Descartes (1596 1650) had an influence in the modern
philosophical tradition would be an understanding. Descartes singlehandedly signified
or directly caused a historical and epistemic shift from the previous Aristotelianism
and blind adherence to tradition to the modern scientific normative framework of
critical, reflective analysis and reductionist metaphysics. While many traditionally
Cartesian arguments seem absurd to the twenty first century mind(the supposed
power of the pineal gland) it can still be said that a variety of notions that are
traditionally viewed as the most modern of philosophical and scientific concepts still
owe their origin to an implicit Cartesians: An implicit dualism between subject and
object that discourse focuses of reducing one to another, the centrality of rational
reflection and denial of the body , the notion of a universal subject that is abstracted
from particular conditions, cultural and historical conditions and most notably a
representational model of perception. This representative model of perception is
most notably exemplified in the wax analogy in which Descartes attempts to root out
the very nature of perception itself. It can be said that the current philosophical,
scientific and even political discourses have their origin in a variation of this form of
representation, even if Descartes idealist conclusions are rejected
The philosopher that gets to the core of this historical and philosophical shift that
results from Cartesian thought is none other than Maurice Merleau Ponty (1908
1961), the French phenomenologist. In Phenomenology of Perception, Merleau Ponty
both owes heavily to the Cartesian tradition, by heavily undermining it, with the
remainder being an analysis of lived experience itself, other wise know as the
phenomenological tradition. This critique is no more notable than the critique of the
attitude that arises in Descartes wax analogy in order to demonstrate a paradigm shift
in Western philosophical (and eventually political) thought. This paper will
demonstrate Merleau Ponty s justified problems with Descartes wax analogy .
The paper will open with a charitable introduction to Descartes wax analogy . Most

The Odyssey, The Presence Of Divine Intervention Essay
Throughout the Odyssey, the presence of divine intervention overwhelmingly
shapes the story as a whole. The relationship between humans and gods within the
book can be characterized as one that provides humans options, commonly in the
form of an omen and according to their choices, will result in a set punishment or
appraisal. From an individual s choices in life and the aforementioned trials, a god
or goddess will positively or negatively impact the person s life. This divine
intervention drives people to practice holy acts out of self interest and fear which
reveals that all humans at their base are not altruistic but, selfish and only care for
events that will promote their lives. Their faith in or fear of the gods also provide
insight on humans tendencies to divert blame, and be scared of the unknown.
Throughout the Odysseyeach and every character serves as a median to demonstrate
how the gods intervene in humans lives that they either favor or despise and
according to their subjective views on these people, they will construct their fate. In
various encounters throughout the book, Athena, the goddess of wisdom influences
the lives of Odysseus s family in order to improve their fate due to her favoritism
for the persistent mariner attempting to return home and respect of his cleverness.
Her preference to Odysseus is seen in the beginning of Book 1 stating to her father,
Zeus that she is concerned of the whereabouts of Odysseus and pleads for support to
deliver him

The interest is twofold. First, the marketeris interested in understanding
perceptualprocess that operates the within the consumer who is evaluating marketing
stimuli. If the stimulus is an advertisement, the emphasis is on discovery of the cues
people use in responding to the advertisement, the meaning they assign to these cues,
and the total impressions they form from the combinationof available cues [33, p.

particularproducts and brandsand an individual sself concept, i.e., how the
consumption of certain products or brands contributes to how others perceive him or
her. Having delineateda certain self concept that he or she wishes to convey to others,
the consumer must decide which productsare relevantto conveyingthese self
concepts, and exactly what self concepts are being conveyed by the use of different

The Confusion Between Illusion and Reality in Death of a...
The line between reality and illusion is often blurred in Arthur Miller s play, Death
of a Salesman. Whether it is incorporated in the content or the actual structure, this
struggle between recognizing reality from illusion turns into a strong theme; it
eventually leads to the downfall of Willy and his family. Willy is incapable of
recognizing who he is, and cannot realize that he, as well as his sons, is not capable
of being successful in the business world. Happy and Biff both go through some
battle between reality and illusion that cause a collapse in some part of their lives.
The line between Willy s flashbacks and current time also send him into turmoil when

The theme, confusion between reality and illusion leads to a downfall, applies
here because in a way suicide is the ultimate downfall. Charley, a voice of reason,
counter argues that nobody s worth nothin dead (98). Charley is consistently in
reality and is one of the most successful people in the play. So, the fact that Charley
recognizes reality in the harshest and brightest light is what kept him from
experiencing a downfall in his life. If the Willy was not confused about the reality
of his life, there may not have been such a great fall when his life amounted to less
than he expected, and when Biff s life did not turn out to be what he had hoped.
Apart from Willy s delusion of his own success, he also sees his sons as great
successes in the business world, and that they will amount to so much in their
lives. These boys cannot be successful because they have been [blown] so full of
hot air [they] could never stand taking orders from anybody (131). Willy s
illusions about his sons not only ruined Willy s life, but it caused these boys to
have a false sense of reality, which is the theme. This false sense of reality leads to
their downfall in the business world because Willy had built them up so high that
they believed they should be the one giving the orders, not taking them. When
Willy tells his boys together [you] could absolutely lick the civilized world (64), this
is an example of the way Willy falsely sees his boys and fills their

Research Paper On Erikson Life Stages
3.Psychological System
During adolescence, individuals explore and establish a sense of their own identity,
which involves thinking about what they want in life, what kind of person they want
to be, and who they really are (Erikson, 1968). Although identity development is a
lifelong process, the concept of their identity is mainly formed and crystalized during
adolescence. Individuals often find themselves trying to become independent, but also
worrying about the responsibilities that come with the independence; adolescents
think about their values, the directions they choose to pursue in life, such as vocation,
interpersonal relationships, community involvement, ethnic group membership, and
expression of one s sexual orientation, as well ... Show more content on

In Erikson s Identity and the Life Cycle, he says the Identity Versus Identity
Diffusion psychosocial stage is characterized by adolescents search for a new sense
of continuity and sameness [but] some adolescents have to refight many of the
crises of earlier years (Erikson, 1959, p. 94). When adolescents encounter role
confusion or identity diffusion, they often encounter a dilemma based on a strong
previous doubt of one s ethnic and sexual identity, which can lead to delinquent and
outright psychotic incidents (Erikson, 1959, p. 97). Erikson describes it as the
inability to settle on an occupational identity and in order to keep themselves
together, they temporarily over identify, to the point of apparent complete loss of
identity (Erikson, 1959, p. 97). In order for adolescents to establish a coherent sense
of identity, the previous crises must be resolved and they must have a healthy sense
of trust, autonomy, initiative, and industry (Steinberg Belsky, 1991). James Marcia
(1980) in Blackwell Handbook of Adolescent Psychology further explored Erikson s
theory and expanded it with four different states of identity formation; suicidal
adolescents who are unable to form an identity may be stuck at identity diffusion or
identity moratorium. In identity diffusion, adolescents suffer from severe lack of
decision making and have no direction whereas adolescents are indecisive and have
different identity options, but do not fully commit in identity moratorium. As a result,
adolescents, unable to form an identity or struggle to form one, may turn to suicidal
thoughts and ultimately commit suicide. Adolescents who suffer from role confusion
or identity
The Conflict Between Turks And Armenians
Turning off my iPod, I hiked a few more miles up the mountain, the echo of my
racing heartbeat pulsing in my ears. Feeling my sweat, mingled with the drizzling
rain, trickle down my neck, I let out a deep breath and looked down the edge at the
lush greenery. Kicking a tiny rock, I watched it fly off the edge until it got lost
somewhere among the warring bushes.
With the whispered song of the wind lulling me into a state of calm, I was back in
second grade, playing at the park with some friends from school when I witnessed a
group of Armenian boys bullying a half Turkish, half Armenian child, calling him all
sorts of names, including Murderer and dirty Turk. Although my parents never

Come on man, let s just go play basketball, the shortest of the group said, leading

Once they were gone, I turned to the boy and played with him until his parents
returned from their stroll. ОЅ Growing up, I always feared the month of April. For
the Armenian community, the entire month represented the 1915 massacres of an
estimated 1.5 million Armenians Although the genocide is commemorated on the

experience.
As the end of March would approach, my anxiety would grow. I would stay awake at
nights, disturbed by fearful thoughts of murder and separation from my family.
Armenian news stations constantly featured programs with old photographs of
genocide victims, ranging from images of emaciated children to rows and rows of
human heads piled atop each other beheading Armenian men was one of the most

Tips For Your Web Performance Essay
In general, if you want to know more about your web performance, you should be
using some metrics to learn more and improve your website. If the website is not
getting the number of viewers you expected it would be, there are some problems
that you might be concerned about. First, the web content does not contain
enough keywords that visitors use to look up using internet to find your website.
Therefore, I would recommend to look at what keywords that visitors used to find
you. Also, it is useful to know which web browsers your visitors come from
because there could be some errors if you come from different web browsers.
Sometimes, the page is loaded slowly on web browsers such as Firefox and Safari.
Moreover, keep tracks of Visitors , Returning Visitors , and Unique Visitors : this
will let you know if your website is helpful and interesting enough for visitors to
come back after their first visit. Below are some more specific recommendations that
we would like you to look more closely. Slide topics and sub topics recommendations

Background on Florence Nightingale
Background
Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, named after her birthplace,
Florence, Italy. Florence s mother Frances Nightingale was from a family of
merchants and enjoyed socializing with people of prominent social standing.
Florence was the exact opposite; she avoided anything where she was the center of
attention. Florence s father William Shore Nightingale was a wealthy landowner. Her
father was able to provide Florence with the best education. Florence Nightingale was
always trying to help anyone around her, even from a young age. She ministered to
the ill and poor people. At 16, she decided to pursue the career of nursing, trying to
help as many people as possible. Her parents were upset and forbid her from

The hospital was on top of a large waste container, which contaminated the water and
the building itself. Soldiers lay in their own body fluids on stretchers throughout the
hallways as pests ran about. Supplies dwindled due to the increase in patients, even
water was being rationed.
Florence set to work quickly. Her team and the wounded that were mobile,
scrubbed the entire hospital. Florence spent a great deal of her time caring for the
soldiers. She quickly gained the nick name the lady with the lamp and the angel of
Crimea because she walked the halls at night with a lamp, while caring for the
soldiers. The death rate dropped by two thirds because she improved the sanitary
conditions of the hospital. In addition to improving sanitary conditions, she also
created a number of different patient services to improve the quality of their
hospital stay including, meal services, laundry, and classroom services. Florence
stayed in Crimea for a year and a half. She left once the war had ended. When she
left in 1856, she was welcomed back with a hero s welcome. She was rewarded by
the Queen with an engraved brooch, which later came to be known as Nightingale
Jewel, and also receiving $250,000 from the British government. Florence used the
money to open the St. Thomas Hospital, and the Nightingale Training School for
Nurses. Nightingale gave the nursing profession a boost in the popularity; it no
longer was a lower class job.
Short Speech On Hooligans
Hooligan as an honorary title I. Intro Bandido, insurekto, pilibustero, erehe...
hooligans. These are the labels attributed to those who unwaveringly struggle for
change. From the time of the campaign to end the very imperial domination of
Spanish until to this present time of the so called independent republic, people
who struggle for change are considered as terrorists, rebels, now.. hooligan. What
does the word hooligan reminds you? It brings back the picture of group of
activists who throw crumpled papers to Abad and shouting that he s a thief. These
are the so called enemies of the university as the 23 UP Econ profs unjustly and
unfairly referred to. It also brings back the heckling of PNoy in Columbia
University by couple of FilAm activists. The hooligan word makes you remember
those people who were referred by mass media as uncivilized and uneducated . II.
Hooligan Hooligan as some dictionary would define, means an aggressor, a cruel and
a brutal fellow. To... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those hooligans are those who willingly struggle for change without incentives and
assurance of career and promotions... Those hooligans are those people whose lives
are put into danger because of their continued defiance of this corrupt system...
Those hooligans are those whose only motivation is the belief that someday,
through continued and vigilant struggle, this very system of corrupt governance
will finally put into to death... Now, the hooligan word as they describe them is not
a shameful term! It is an honorary title, a badge of honor... You may not know the
names of those so called hooligans but as one writer aptly put it: They will be
remembered as being brave, resolute, and committed scholars. The people will try to
find their names to remember them. Their action could be included in the list of
instances where students rocked and challenged the ruling system for and in behalf of

  • 2. Fahrenheit 451 Social Commentary Analysis Fahrenheit 451 is full of obvious social commentary. All kinds of examples can be found in every chapter in the book. The book has no lack of stylistic elements either. The book is about a dystopian world where books have been made illegal to own, but some people have realized the good uses of books. The author uses this book to say a few things of his own, but also points out that books help us as humans see things that are wrong with society. Ray Bradburyuses stylistic elements such as satire in order to talk about problems in society such as censorshipand our reliance on technology. As said, the author uses this book to talk about censorship in society, and also our reliance on technology. Censorship can be seen in the book just from
  • 3. Circuit City History Sam Wurtzel first created Circuit City, under the name of Wards Co., on September 13th 1949 in Richmond Virginia. Wurtzel was getting a haircut when he learned that the first commercial television station would be going on air in Richmond, which inspired him to open a store to sell television sets because he knew consumer interest in the new local broadcasts would only increase. In the next ten years this small company expanded itself by acquiring several television and appliance stores throughout the U.S., which included Richmond, Alabama, Washington, New York, and California. In 1960 Wards Co. also expanded its operations into licensed television departments within large department stores, which led the company to offer stocks to the public for the first time. By 1965, Wards had added various acquisitions to its existing portfolio, which included a discount department storethat sold automotive and household supplies, home appliances, and clothing as well as a Delaware company that operated household and hardware sales in department stores around the Southeast. Not only did Wards grow increasingly through acquisition, it also grew because of its reputation and commitment to customer service by being one of the first companies to offer a service plan for its TV sets. The company continued its rapid acquisition strategy through the beginning of the1970 s, but by 1974, Wards began to suffer adverse effects of this of rapid over diversification into such non core business
  • 4. Gadsden Purchase The Gadsden Purchase of 1853 is one of the most monumental land purchases in United States history. In basic terms, the Gadsden Purchase was an area of land that was acquired by the United States from Mexico in order to build a railway for the transportation of goods in the South from East to West in order to fulfill Manifest Destiny. Throughout this paper, I hope to accurately navigate through the events prior to the Gadsden Purchaseas well as the early life of James Gadsden. Although many topics relate to the purchase itself, I will offer a historical view into Gadsden s life before, after, and during the purchase as well as a more in depth look into the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. I shall also touch base on why the land was so... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They called it the Gadsden Purchase, which the United States agreed to pay Mexico ten million dollars for thirty eight thousand square miles of land. Ten million dollars back in 1853 is equivalent to two hundred and eighty million dollars today. The Southern transcontinental railroad that James Gadsden had dreamed up was never built. The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican American war in 1848 was a very important decision in our history. We allowed the Mexican government to keep Mesilla Valley in place of them giving us the Santa Rita Mountains. We believed that we would profit off of this compromise due to the fact that we thought there was rich copper deposits, and some silver and gold which had not yet been mined. Little did we know that the Mesilla Valley was essential for the construction of a Southern Transcontinental Railroad. The reason it was important for the railroad was because it consisted of flat desert land about fifty miles north to south and 200 miles wide, east to west. There were two parcels of the land that President Pierce instructed Gadsden to try and buy. The Baja California Peninsula was the first for fifty million dollars or the thirty eight thousand square miles of dry arid desert. Santa Ana needed money badly to help build up his army to defend against the very people wanting to pay him, the United States. He thought the best solution was to sell as little land as possible for the most
  • 5. Gullivers Travels Comparison Between Book and Movie Essay Gullivers Travels Comparison Between Book and Movie It is common in today s media driven society to reach into the past for inspiration and ideas. A trend has developed where original works are transformed into other mediums. For example: books are turned into movies and/or plays, movies are turned into weekly sitcoms, and cartoons will spawn empires (Disney). These things happen so often that an audience rarely stops to question the level of authenticity that remains after these conversions. Perhaps it is only when a project is not well received that people begin to think of the difficulties involved with changing a work s genre. Using Gulliver s Travelsas an example, discrepancies and additions in the movie can be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cobwebs and dust obscure the sign at first, but Gulliver breaks down the barrier and wipes the sign to reveal that he has found the Room of Answers. He enters the room and asks if the man there can tell him the way back to England. The man turns around and Gulliver is looking at an exact replica of himself. This second Gulliver states You know the way home, but you ll never find it because deep in you heart, you don t want to to which the original Gulliver replies That s not true! The scene described above appears to be quite critical to the plot development in the movie. However, this appears nowhere in the original text. The viewer must ask him/herself why this was added and the consequences of the change. The movie version of this story portrays Gulliver as a travel that has been gone for eight consecutive years and had been searching for his way home the entire time. He merely falls into unfortunate circumstances that prevent this return. In the book, however, it is less clear that Gulliver desires to be home at all. He very rarely speaks of his family and seems to have little emotion at being reunited with them after each journey or when he leaves them again. The movie s alternate portrayal of Gulliver seems incongruent with the added scene. Instead, this extra scene would appear to make more sense if the character of Gulliver was depicted as he was in the book.
  • 6. California Government Research Paper Devin Shephard Political Science Prof. Fong March 1, 2017 California Politics and Government California is the wealthiest and most diverse state in the country. Just like the National government, California is comprised of three branches; Legislative, Executive and Judicial. The legislative branch is the largest, and is made up of the state Senate and Assembly. The Assembly consists of eighty representatives, one from each county, to serve for up to three two year terms. We see that the passage of these initiatives affected the ability of the legislature to create important policies. Proposition 140 is a reform initiative that drastically changed the fundamentals of the legislative system. This proposition halted the cycle of institutional knowledge for legislators who become experts in certain policies. They are barred from running for office once the term limit is fulfilled. In the bigger picture, legislative committee leaders are sometimes new legislators who do not have expertise in the policy. This is problematic because lack of expertise hinders the creation of innovative and effective policy. Proposition 140 created a better over turn thus, giving minorities and women the chance to represent their constituents; the point of the term limit was to repopulate the legislature. By creating this constant repopulation, it allows expertise to be achieved by legislators but it bars them to contribute into policy making once their term limit is achieved. Proposition 118 on the other hand intends to change the composition of the legislature but makes it harder for redistricting to occur. By passing Proposition 118, the legislature will not be able to represent the people of California accurately; thus, creating policy problems since enacted policies will not

  • 10. The Roman Empire And The Rise And Fall Of The Papacy For centuries the Vatican has occupied a unique position in history, exercising both sacred and secular power in activities that have generated as much fascination as controversy. Yet, for most people it remains a mysterious institution. One whose motives and maneuvers are not easily understood. From the struggles of the very first Christians to the challenges and scandals of today, the Catholic Church has wrestled with how to organize itself, express its beliefs, and nurture its members. The church has grown from a handful of disciples in the first century to over one billion members in the twenty first, resulting in profound changes that demand a theological response. A candid but rational inquiry into the progress and establishment of Christianity may be considered a very essential part of the history of the Roman Empire and the rise and fall of the papacy. The history of the Papacy began over two thousand years ago with the reign of John Paul II. Peter, the humble fisherman of Galilee and an Apostle of Jesus Christ, became the figure head and the basis for the institution that has outlined not only the Roman and Byzantine empires but also the Carolingian Gaul, medieval Germany, Spain, Britain, the Third Reich of Hitler, and the Soviet Union. Jesus tells Peter, And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven:

Sports journalism can be a difficult occupation at times, but it can also be very rewarding. To help cover games better writers get tickets for excellent seats at all events they are assigned to, they meet with sports stars and coaches (if they are not a writer in a small town newspaper), and sometimes you travel abroad to cover events (Heitzman 44). Synaptic Connections The weakening of synaptic connections is not the only mechanism involved in transience, there is also evidence that complete synaptic elimination either through shrinkage or loss of spines can be responsible for a portion of natural forgetting. This relationship between synaptic elimination and natural forgetting has been observed in the nematode C. elegans. In C. elegans associative learning induces synapse growth at a specific neuron. However, after a few hours the modified synapse shrinks and reverts back to its original native state, this change back to its native state is also accompanied by the loss of the associative memory. These rearrangements are integral to the adaptive nature of the brain and crucial to its many functions. However, having a continuous stream of new synapse appearing and modifying the connectivity patterns of a finite space must lead to the removal of some data in order to maintain an efficient system; this means that processes that promote the remodeling of the brain also promote instability within some of the connections and in turn transience. [3] This promotion of transience by neurogenesis has been observed and confirmed by various recent studies of rodents. One of these studies observed the stability of perforant path dentate gyrus long term potentiation in awake, active rats. Researchers in this study monitored the strength of perforant path dentate gyrus in multiple rats over several weeks. They found that in the control group the rat s long term potentiation reverted back to baseline within approximately a week, but in the group of rats that were irradiated in order to eliminate hippocampal neurogenesis, long term potentiation was prolonged with potentiation still observable after 2 weeks. [7] These results show a strong correlation between the promotion of neural connection re arranging via neurogenesis and inducing the decay of long term potentiation, conversely the prevention of neural connection re arranging was shown to promote persistence of long term potentiation. A second study involving mice was also

When digging a little deeper you are fully able to compare Owen s Dulce et Decorum Est and Jarrell s Death of the Ball Turret Gunner. • 14. Bartleby The Scrivener Character Analysis In Melville s Bartleby the Scrivener , the narrator is on the hunt for a new copyist in his office. From what we can tell of our narrator, he is an unambitious, vanilla fellow but still has an air of condescension about him. He always thinks that he knows what is best for his employees, although in actuality, he knows very little. Enter Bartleby: the incurably forlorn and sedate answer to his prayers (330). Bartleby is a quiet man who gains employment at the law office of our narrator. Overall, he seemed to be a good worker who had a few kinks the narrator thought that he could iron out, but to no avail. At the end of his account, the narrator says Ah Bartleby, Ah humanity which suggests that he sees Bartleby as a representation of all people. Hours and hours would pass of Bartleby not doing his work, and not even doing something for his own entertainment like reading the newspaper or drinking, like the other copyists did. His time was consumed by these reveries, and also by not doing anything that he did not prefer. Readers can interpret Bartleby s actions as a representation of his hopelessness. When a character looks out of a window, it can show the reader how he sees the world. For Bartleby, his vision is fixed on a dead wall. The view he has of the world is dead and despairing. He doesn t want to do anything productive because he is so fixed on his lifeless

Moreover, the main focus is pointed towards the miscommunication between these two agencies. Evidently, the execution and tactical strategies went unnoticed despite the apparent red flags that presented themselves, in addition to the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Central Intelligence Agency failure to pursue threats and establish a baseline of security resulted in the disaster of 9/11. Moreover adding to these issues was the lack of communication and information shared between the two agencies, the Federal Bureau of Investigations and Central Intelligence Agency. He decides he will preserve himself in unnatural things, such as art when he says, Once out of nature I shall never take / [m]y bodily form from any natural thing. Dick either has to deny that humans have any freedom of the will and agency as a being, or has to justify his assertion by finding a way around this claim. There is however some improvement upon this argument where Dick claims, what we are talking about then...is the Tao, which is real but does not exist, yet registers on (mildly shapes) what does exist (729). This is certainly a departure from the original comment by Dick as he changes his word from programmed into mildly shapes , thus allowing for some type of agency for human beings as

Through Augustus s writing he depicts himself as being a very fair and humble ruler, one who is fair to all gives opportunities to his enemies. While on the other hand, the Juvenile Satire s depict Rome as a very dark place, with Augustuss being a horrible ruler and ruining everything good about Rome. Having these two depictions of Rome during the rule of Augustus is hard to see which one is truthful. Augustus humbles himself and gives factual evidence along with dates, while the JuvenalSatire absolutely destroy anything good about Augusts. Taking that into account the Rome in Augustus Res Gestae would be the closest depiction of what the real Rome was truly like during this time, this is because the reader cannot look at the Satires without knowing that the writer truly hated Augustus and therefore couldn t give an unbiased account on the events occurring during those times. In the Res Gestae written by Augustus himself the reader can find that many times throughout the writings that Augusts is trying to keep a historical account of all the great things he has done, while at the same time staying humble. Something he saw yanked him out of his thoughts. The back of the crowd was stirring. He turned and cut the man, who was about to be burned, loose. May the King bless you! The man cried as he ran to the outstretched arms of his family. Ebon smiled as a deep sense of satisfaction washed over him. He then turned and pushed his way to the back of the crowd. He stood aghast at what he saw. The two Dark Wizards that had killed Eldon were fighting each other! The boy had drawn his sword and was hurling spheres of green light at the girl. The girl tried hard to deflect all of them with her sword. Dark Wizards could not do shield spells. The boy grabbed his sword with his other hand and pulled it apart. It split into two swords! His voice roared like thunder. You are a disgrace to the Dark Wizards! You are a disgrace to me! The boy continued to yell a spell that Ebon had never heard before. Ebon could see that the girl was beginning to lose the battle. He watched her swing her sword in vain. She kept stumbling back. Finally, she tripped and fell over. Her sword clattered a few feet away. Ebon found himself with an inner struggle. These were murderers. They killed without hesitation. They were ruthless, unstoppable, and unforgiving. But the boy was really about to kill her. Even if they were bad, he still felt a need to help. He

Many say that having all these illegal immigrants in America just costs America money and it takes away money and jobs that would otherwise be for U.S. citizens. While others disagree and say that immigrants have helped the economy greatly and if they are deported the economy will suffer the consequences. Although, there are some positives when it comes to deportation, the majority of its ripple effecthurts many Americans. The people that pay the highest price for deportation are the families of mixed status that are being broken apart. In an article about the families involved with deportation the claim of the authors is that deportation has many negative effects on the citizen children of immigrants. The authors point out that the separation of these mixed status families causes many mental illnesses for these kids that put their lives on pause. The authors claim is that because these children were born in American soil they all have the right to the 14th amendment, so they all have accorded birthright citizenship. The author demonstrates throughout the article that even though these children were born here in America, they often don t get the citizenship right because of

In hopes with the Judge being lenient with their sentence. Many criminal cases are based off of plea bargaining, it s a negotiation process where the defendant and the prosecutor discuss what charges they will be accounted for if not all. Sometimes it may lead to a reduced sentence, which also saves the time of everyone going through a trial and having to go through the process of trying to solve a case. The judgecan not be there through the discussion of the pleabargain, and nor does a plea bargain take place in a court room. Plea bargaining is more of a private situation with just the prosecutor and defendant. It also has it s advantages and disadvantages. Most times plea bargaining becomes controversial, and It does get heated because no one wants to sit in prison. A crimeis a crime and the person who commits the crime has to face the consequences of his/her actions. Plea Bargaining just makes things a little more less complicated then what it needs to be for a defendant and the prosecutor. As mentioned earlier, plea bargaining has it s advantages and disadvantages. The most obvious advantage would be receiving a shorter sentence, and less chargers on ones record. A disadvantage would be that either way you still have to do time in prison. Accepting a plea bargain is not easy at all, everything will depend on things such as your criminal

Iraq spent many years acquiring and constructing nuclear weapons but they were invaded by the USA before completion of the weapons. Terrorist groups are acquiring the materials necessary, but they have failed to enrich the nuclear materials to weapon grade levels. Financial support, time, proper materials, advanced nuclear reactors, and most importantly, experts in a variety of fields are necessary for the construction of a nuclear bomb. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For a basic nuclear weapons only a kilogram of plutonium is needed, but for terrorist groups without access to advanced nuclear reactors, high levels of plutonium and uranium must be obtained. Gram quantities of plutonium and uranium can be purchased on the black market, but much more sizable amounts must be located (Kamp 1996). Most terrorist groups would prefer to build a gun type bomb for the nuclear explosion. This usually requires around 100 pounds of uranium or plutonium. Once this is achieved, it is a great challenge to enrich the plutonium and uranium to an extremely high grade, known as weapon grade or bomb grade, necessary for a nuclear bomb. In fact, most seizures from the terrorist groups are of relatively low grade weapon material and are not enough to fuel a significant chemical reaction. In order to enrich the materials, terrorist groups must locate large amounts of specialized gases, such as flourine. These gases are difficult to purchase from companies due to the potential use of the gases. Experts in physics, chemistry, electronics, and explosives with the technical know how of the special apparatus and complex systems must be acquired to conduct the assembly of the weapons. This is the most delicate and important component because a successful nuclear explosion demands a complete chemical reaction which is highly difficult to achieve. Millions of dollars

As demonstrated by this quotation from Vince Lombardi, a reflection of our worth derives from the effort we put forward. Stories of successful citizens rising from the unknown to fame, or poverty to wealth shows the common man that if they desire a similar outcome, there exists a possibility of attaining a higher social status. Occasionally, as depicted in the play The Cherry Orchardby Anton Chekov, instances where honest means to attain fortune occasionally arise. By utilizing dialogue and direction, action, and images, he makes clear the dishonest motives of the character Lopakhin, especially within the third act. In order to obtain a new status within society, Lopakhin creates chaos in order to ensure his future differs from his past, while controlling the destiny of those who indirectly oppressed him through the development of a motive and acting on his personal desires with no regard for the people around him.Without an initial conversation regarding development, there exists no possibility for change. Descartes singlehandedly signified or directly caused a historical and epistemic shift from the previous Aristotelianism and blind adherence to tradition to the modern scientific normative framework of critical, reflective analysis and reductionist metaphysics. While many traditionally Cartesian arguments seem absurd to the twenty first century mind(the supposed power of the pineal gland) it can still be said that a variety of notions that are traditionally viewed as the most modern of philosophical and scientific concepts still owe their origin to an implicit Cartesians: An implicit dualism between subject and object that discourse focuses of reducing one to another, the centrality of rational reflection and denial of the body , the notion of a universal subject that is abstracted from particular conditions, cultural and historical conditions and most notably a representational model of perception. This representative model of perception is most notably exemplified in the wax analogy in which Descartes attempts to root out the very nature of perception itself. It can be said that the current philosophical, scientific and even political discourses have their origin in a variation of this form of representation, even if Descartes idealist conclusions are rejected The philosopher that gets to the core of this historical and philosophical shift that results from Cartesian thought is none other than Maurice Merleau Ponty (1908 1961), the French phenomenologist. In Phenomenology of Perception, Merleau Ponty both owes heavily to the Cartesian tradition, by heavily undermining it, with the remainder being an analysis of lived experience itself, other wise know as the phenomenological tradition. This critique is no more notable than the critique of the attitude that arises in Descartes wax analogy in order to demonstrate a paradigm shift in Western philosophical (and eventually political) thought. This paper will demonstrate Merleau Ponty s justified problems with Descartes wax analogy . The paper will open with a charitable introduction to Descartes wax analogy . Most notably,

The relationship between humans and gods within the book can be characterized as one that provides humans options, commonly in the form of an omen and according to their choices, will result in a set punishment or appraisal. From an individual s choices in life and the aforementioned trials, a god or goddess will positively or negatively impact the person s life. This divine intervention drives people to practice holy acts out of self interest and fear which reveals that all humans at their base are not altruistic but, selfish and only care for events that will promote their lives. Their faith in or fear of the gods also provide insight on humans tendencies to divert blame, and be scared of the unknown. Throughout the Odysseyeach and every character serves as a median to demonstrate how the gods intervene in humans lives that they either favor or despise and according to their subjective views on these people, they will construct their fate. In various encounters throughout the book, Athena, the goddess of wisdom influences the lives of Odysseus s family in order to improve their fate due to her favoritism for the persistent mariner attempting to return home and respect of his cleverness. Her preference to Odysseus is seen in the beginning of Book 1 stating to her father, Zeus that she is concerned of the whereabouts of Odysseus and pleads for support to deliver him

Research Paper On Erikson Life Stages 3.Psychological System During adolescence, individuals explore and establish a sense of their own identity, which involves thinking about what they want in life, what kind of person they want to be, and who they really are (Erikson, 1968). Although identity development is a lifelong process, the concept of their identity is mainly formed and crystalized during adolescence. Individuals often find themselves trying to become independent, but also worrying about the responsibilities that come with the independence; adolescents think about their values, the directions they choose to pursue in life, such as vocation, interpersonal relationships, community involvement, ethnic group membership, and expression of one s sexual orientation, as well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Erikson s Identity and the Life Cycle, he says the Identity Versus Identity Diffusion psychosocial stage is characterized by adolescents search for a new sense of continuity and sameness [but] some adolescents have to refight many of the crises of earlier years (Erikson, 1959, p. 94). When adolescents encounter role confusion or identity diffusion, they often encounter a dilemma based on a strong previous doubt of one s ethnic and sexual identity, which can lead to delinquent and outright psychotic incidents (Erikson, 1959, p. 97). Erikson describes it as the inability to settle on an occupational identity and in order to keep themselves together, they temporarily over identify, to the point of apparent complete loss of identity (Erikson, 1959, p. 97). In order for adolescents to establish a coherent sense of identity, the previous crises must be resolved and they must have a healthy sense of trust, autonomy, initiative, and industry (Steinberg Belsky, 1991). James Marcia (1980) in Blackwell Handbook of Adolescent Psychology further explored Erikson s theory and expanded it with four different states of identity formation; suicidal adolescents who are unable to form an identity may be stuck at identity diffusion or identity moratorium. In identity diffusion, adolescents suffer from severe lack of decision making and have no direction whereas adolescents are indecisive and have different identity options, but do not fully commit in identity moratorium. As a result, adolescents, unable to form an identity or struggle to form one, may turn to suicidal thoughts and ultimately commit suicide. Adolescents who suffer from role confusion or identity
